can I get back to my original firmware? - Captivate General

I flashed the Cognition ROM onto my Samsung Captivate and it was working fantastically for me, but then I replaced my SIM card, because the Rogers people told me that maybe I could lengthen my battery life by getting a new one. Now my Captivate is telling me "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network".
I figure a solution would be to flash the original firmware back onto my phone. How do I do that? Any further advice?
Also, when I check phone model number, it says I have an I897. In that case, am I already stuck on AT&T?

odin one click
1. download & install the usb drivers:
Windows 64bit
Windows 32bit
2. download odin one click:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
3. unzip the downloaded file
4. enable usb debugging on your phone
5. turn off phone, take out the battery, sim card & micro sd
6. put battery back in but do not turn on phone yet
7. start odin3 (it is the I897UCJf6-final-OCD-REV0.exe file)
8. while holding the volume up+down buttons, plug in the usb cable on your phone. this will turn on your phone and put it in download mode (you will see the android robot holding a shovel)
9. once odin sees the phone (it will say something like com 3 connected), press start. if after 2-3 minutes odin does not see your phone, remove the battery, put it back in and while holding the volume up+down buttons plug in the usb cable on your phone
when odin finishes, your phone will back to stock

You'll get stock att that way...

what is the downside of being stock ATT?

im sure someone has the stock dump for rogers.

Resolution: Didn't have to do anything fancy. I figured maybe the SIM card didn't like my unlocked phone, so I got Rogers to consider it "defective", got reimbursed, and got a new SIM card, but put it into my Rogers Blackberry first, then transferred over to my Captivate - it worked!

[Q] Samsung Captivate bricked.

ok...so i rooted my phone tonight. Downloaded busybox...everything was going great. So i dl the Odin Froyo update...and halfway through...the USB cable came out. Now...When i try and turn it on it shows an icon of a phone...exclamation point and a PC..
I can get the phone into dl mode..but when i connect it to Odin...it just says "File analysis...for hours....nothing happens. I have dl the stock Rom from XDA and tried that. Both Odins recognize my phone (Ie they show up in yellow) But nothing ever happens with the update. So now what? Am i bricked.
I wish I could help, but I almost had the same thing happen. I can tell you the prob with the cable connection is the cable, mine was. I ordered a couple online and trashed the factory cable. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Search for One-Click Odin back to stock.
Remember to access download mode you have to pull and replace the battery, hold both vol. buttons, and while holding, plug in the cable.
If Odin recognizes the phone, then there *most likely isn't a problem with it.
Ditto, Pull battery, sd card and sim, put battery back in, follow directions to the letter, start oden first, then install cord while holding down both up and down vol. buttons.

Cell phone ! PC-- HELP!!! trying to install 2.2

ok so i went to AT&T webiste to install 2.2. well not my phone is stuck on a black screen with the cell phone ! PC picture.. I have tried to hold teh volume keys and power etc.. nothing all i get is that picture.. What can i do to fix this tonite??
Buy a jig. You would have come to that conclusion already if you had bothered searching the forums.
Pull battery, sim, external sd. Put battery back in. hold just volume up and down, plug in usb. Do you get to an android guy with s shovel? If so you will likely recovery tonight. If not you will need a usb jig

^ This. People don't always need a jig. (most cases they won't). Try that first then if every way imaginable of doing that fails. Build a jig (if you know how, there's a thread around here somewhere) or buy one.
well now if anything was CLEAR on the steps to fix this i wouldn't be asking..
I get the android with the shovel sometimes, but when i started the mini keis the install fails.. wants me to do emergency recovery which i do then that fails. that is when i get the cell ! pc screen..
sorry if i am asking.. just new to this and this was my first post..
Forget kies for now, that is not going to help you now, you can get to that screen though correct?
Pull your battery, on the left side on the white sticker is your build number. Something like 1008. What is yours
This should help in many cases.

Flash stock software.
It might just be that you need a new usb cable because I had the same problem where it seem to get stuck when I tried to flash the new firmware and I got the same screen you got but I tried a different usb cable and it worked.
Come on mods do some modding
i think the build # is 1083
I just changed the usb cord. followed these steps:
This only works for the captivate, not any other galaxy s variant.
Situations: phone-!-Computer / no download mode
Black Screen / RST_STATUS 0x0
Procedure:
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Connect usb cable.
5. Hold volume up + volume down + Power.
6. Insert battery.
7. Release POWER BUTTON ONLY.
You should now be in immediate download mode.
Get the android guy with shovel.. downloading etc..
I looked at the odin screen and it shows:
0:[COM7} in the ID:com
But feels like nothing is happening..
sorry sticker says CE1068!

If you're trying to upgrade to 2.2 from AT&T then you don't need to enter download mode or recovery mode. First make sure that USB debugging is unchecked.
Go to Menu>Settings>Applications>Development
Go back to Applications>USB Settings
(Recommended) Check ask on connection
Assuming you already have the drivers installed, open Kies mini as this is how to install the update. Plug in the USB cord, check the Kies (firmware update) button on the phone and wait for Kies mini to find your phone.
If it finds your phone it will do the rest. Just be patient. Good Luck!

Good one.. I like how you just gave him a bunch of advice he can't really use in a soft-brick situation, even after quoting him saying that he's soft bricked
I do this regularly (switching between roms and kernals). The easiest way I fix it is to use Odin3_v1.0 and just load some random pda/kernal/modem files in there and run it. When it gets into the OS, just turn it off and use Odin3 to put I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 back on it. Works every time.

[Q] Need help with serendipity 7 soft brick

i have a samsung captivate (build 1012) that i recently soft bricked and so far i have found no way to get it into download mode to revive it. i have used odin one click and flashed other roms before and im not new to all of this, but this one is just not working out so well. it was on serendipity 6.4 and i wanted to update to serendipity 7 beta 2 so i downloaded all the files i needed and went into download mode to flash gingerbread. odin went just fine until it reached the step where it says "do not power off target" and then froze and didnt go any further than that. so i unplugged the phone and every button combination i know to put it into download mode to run through odin one click and it simply wont do it. it is stuck on the phone-!-pc screen and thats all it will do. i have tried the gb bootloader button combinations and froyo combinations. im about to just order a jig because it looks like thats all i can do. has anyone else had something similar happen? i need all the help i can get.
I have experience in this area but not with Samsung devices. Is the bootloader unlockable, and if so have you unlocked it. Also, have you gotten any software on your computer to recognize your phone?
i have unlocked it and i do have the 64 bit drivers for my phone (im running windows 7 64 bit) and i have always been able to do this but i think odin screwed up my ability to get into download mode because of my build number :/
What Screen do you get when you power on? Phone ! Computer? Or something else?

Can you get any sign of fastboot protocol support, or Koushs Clockworkmod recovery. You said you have installed the drivers, but when you plug it into your computer does your computer recognize your device as anything. Sorry about this whole situation
Hey i found this. I have not the slightest clue if it will help you but i will post it here just in case.
So far this has been the only sure fire method I've found to 100% get around any brick situation regardless of firmware, etc. This only works for the captivate, not any other galaxy s variant.

I hope it works and wish for the best
yeah i get the phone ! computer screen, thats all it will do no matter what combination i try
Try this
Here is another thing to try as button combinations, removing the sdcard and sim seem to be the only possible way out of this
What worked for me was: Pull the battery, sim and micro sd card. Open odin on the PC. Insert the battery. Hold vol up and down then with the buttons held connect the usb cable. Ju..st remember to plug in the usb cable with the vol up and down held in and odin must be open on the computer.
With your current luck this will probably not work but anything is worth a try
From the Phone ! PC screen I've flashed stocked roms. If Odin can see your phone from this screen you don't need to enter download mode because your technically already in an alternate download mode. In theory you should be able to just Flash to stock from the Phone ! PC screen.

If I'm not mistaken, the phone -!- PC screen is the equivalent of download mode. I'd unplug your phone, restart Odin, plug phone back in and go from there. I'll defer if someone has a more detailed explanation though

leave the power button alone
power down
hold in volume buttons
insert USB
If you managed to get the GB bootloaders in place (assuming I9000), the download mode key combo is to hold Vol- and Power. If you're still on Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, hold Vol-/Vol+ (with power off), then insert the USB cable.

Unplug your phone, pull your battery for 2+ min. Then open Odin, plug in your USB, press and hold the vol up and vol down, while holding them down, put your battery in. You should see a big triangle with the Android guy . That is Download mode
which odin i have two 3 v1.85 happy flashing and 3v1.85 android+slp
Have odin opened remove battery, insert battery, hold vol+ and vol- , then insert usb . if odin recognizes the phone try flashing the bootloaders again

Reboot your computer
What OS are you running?
Let's run down a quick checklist of things to make sure that you're putting yourself in the best possible place for success:
1. Unplug any cables you have plugged in right now, Turn off ODIN, remove the battery, and reboot your computer.
2. Boot up your computer, let it fully boot and settle. Once it's fully settled, double-check to make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed for the Captivate (and that's its for the correct version of Windows - x86 or x64).
3. Assuming the drivers are present and correct, start up ODIN (You might try the One-Click to Stock, as it will take you back to a stock state). Let it sit for right now.
4. Plug your USB cable into a port that connects directly to the motherboard (but not to your phone just yet). On a desktop, it will be on the back of the machine. On a laptop, you may have to find it by trial and error.
5. Reinsert the battery. Hold Vol+/Vol-, and then insert your USB cable. This should put you in download mode. If not, pull the cable, remove the battery, reinsert the battery, and hold Vol- and power until download mode appears, then insert the USB cable.
6. Assuming you are in download mode, and the cable is inserted, check to see if ODIN recognized the phone. If not, try a different USB port on the computer. You may have to reboot your computer between trials.
7. If ODIN still won't recognize the phone, you may need to look into using Heimdall to flash.
Post back if you have questions.

I thought I remember seeing somewhere a ways back that from this alternate d/l screen Odin may not recognize the phone, but that flashing Odin package would work anyway.
Pretty sure I saw that...but at this point, can't hurt to try. Otherwise jig should get you there.

Galaxy S 4G Issue

I hope i'm in the right board for this, if not i'm sorry, but i've run into a major issue recently.
While working on installing MIUI on my Galaxy S 4G from Tmobile I hit a point where it turned offand absolutely nothing is happening. I don't remember when exactly this happened but I think it was after something with odin.
It's not detected by Kies or anything, it's just off and nothing can get it to turn back on. I left it on the charger and went to sleep last night, this morning it still isn't doing anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In the state that it's in, I believe the phone will still boot into Download Mode, even though nothing appears on the screen. Odin will still recognize the device if it is booted into download mode.
Just open the back cover and remove the battery. It is also recommended you remove the SD card and SIM card. Put the battery back in, and connect the usb cable while holding the power up button, and plug it into your computer. Open up Odin and it should recognize the device still. If it doesn't, try these steps again until it does.
Since you were trying to flash MIUI, we should be safe to assume you're running Gingerbread on your SGS4G, so you can download a stock, Odin flashable ROM from here. Flash that using the PDA in Odin, let it reboot, and you should be fine again.
If you have any further questions that need answering, refer to the SGS4G community.

Thanks for the help, currently i'm attempting to get Odin to recognize it with no success. I've gone through the process about 3 times and will continue till I hopefully get some results. If it makes any difference I don't hear the sound of windows detecting a new USB device anymore like i use to when I would put it into download mode.
As far as I remember, Windows doesn't make a sound when booting into Download Mode. I just realized I made an error in my previous post. You need to be holding the volume up button when you plug it into the computer. In some cases you will need to hold the power button at the same time. Try giving it the volume up + power on button when you plug into your PC. Make sure you're holding the button combo long enough for the SGS4G to power on and into Download.
