NOTE:
So far this has been the only sure fire method I've found to 100% get around any brick situation regardless of firmware, etc. This only works for the captivate, not any other galaxy s variant.
Situations: phone-!-Computer / no download mode
Black Screen / RST_STATUS 0x0
Procedure:
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Connect usb cable.
5. Hold volume up + volume down + Power.
6. Insert battery.
7. Release POWER BUTTON ONLY.
You should now be in immediate download mode.
Please forgive me if this is duplicate some where, but I tried every procedure I could find on google to no avail, then accidentally found this method just before I was going to box it back up and see if my buddy at AT&T would make me eat it or not.
My situation was: Launched Odin3 to flash H3 firmware, died twice in the middle, and on the third time locked up half ways just at the beginning of factoryfs.rfs -- Then the phone did nothing. Blackscreen is all. Interestingly enough, while in the state if you hold volume up + power, it will give a hw diagnostic screen. Beyond that I could get no where. Just a black screen, no acknowledgement when connected to PC, no charging indicator, nothing.
If this is a dupe Im sorry but this method I could not find and hope to make it readily available to people who may think their phones bricked.
Update 12/22/2010:
How to BRICK the phone / WARNING!!!
If for whatever reason you decide to use Odin to flash a stock GTI9000 ROM and manually add the kernels and modems using a "pure" 2.2.1 sammy rom. BEWARE.
Researching a lot, it seems the consensus is that the sbl in the 2.2.1 versions of the GTI9000 has *hard* download mode crippled.. Meaning if there is a software screw up YOU CANNOT USE A USB JIG OR ANY OTHER METHOD OF GETTING THE PHONE IN DOWNLOAD MODE!!! To fix it you'll need a new one or JTAG to replace the bootloader.
As far as I can tell, beyond getting completely rid of the AT&T logo, there is no need to flash boot/sbl to get the "purity" of the 2.2.1 sammy roms.
Extract all files from the tar EXCEPT boot/sbl and re-tar and flash just those to avoid overwriting the stock captivate boot loader.
Also, it does not appear the boot/sbl from the captivate 2.2 leak suffers this same problem.
For any one iffy on bricking their phones, stay away from roms that remove COMPLETELY the AT&T logo on boot. This generally means the boot loader has been messed with any you may be screwed if you soft brick the phone. Most CWM roms dont overwrite the boot/sbl, but some can and do. Watch yourself.. if it the AT&T logo goes away COMPLETELY, I recommend flashing JF6 with One click while the roms alive using adb reboot download and try another rom.
thanks!
worked...took a few tries but some trick with this captivate to get it into download mode.. i was totally bricked too, diag screen with PC/Phone icons and exclamation mark. for me 1.) plug usb, 2.) hold power and vol up/down and connect battery (it fell out) and i was in download mode
I guess a similar procedure was on the odin3 one click thread, but there is something different in your procedure, it's not my case but it would be nice if some people confirms this as this may be useful and if it really works it should be included in odin thread
What worked for me was: Pull the battery, sim and micro sd card. Open odin on the PC. Insert the battery. Hold vol up and down then with the buttons held connect the usb cable. Just remember to plug in the usb cable with the vol up and down held in and odin must be open on the computer.
I also ran into the vol up plus power red text screen. Interesting to note that one of the fields will change depending if the usb cable is connected or not.
mine is dead
mi samsung captivate was working great but, suddenly it go black and only the touch bottom have light, when i plug it in the a/c it show is charging. i'm mac user and a read that i ned to use odin3 but it not work on mac. how i can unbrick the phone???
is rooted with one click lag
the dbdata was modif to
thats all
HEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP
Odin will not open on the mac?
Cant you use a virtual machine and use Odin on a Mac that way?
Or else take the odin 3 single click for JF6 and use on a friends Windows Computer.
Please help - unable to flash back with Odin3
I have pretty much tried it all at this point and am trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I followed the directions just in case get to the big yellow triangle with the droid shoveling and the screen stays at "downloading, do not turn off target..."
Of course I had Odin3 open already but its not seeing my phone, USB drives are installed am using Odin3 ver. 1.30.
Any help would be appreciated, TIA!

Best way to get download mode is use adb and type adb reboot download.
Or follow the volume up/down held with odin open on the computer, then you plug in the usb cable to the computer.

Just sharing the info! Makes you think twice about trying something else don't it?
does not seem to work because as soon as my battery touches the contacts it goes to the diag screen. do I have to release the power button in super human speed times there?
looked at all threads here, looked elsewhere -- there are some that are not fixable. Wanted to add that in case others come here and think that they might be the only ones that can't get it to work.
Ended up sending mine off to Samsung to reset today. :/
I love you! I called AT&T to send me documentation to sign and it was going to cost me 125 dollars to get it replaced even with warranty. And you fixed it !
i have tried just about every single method detailed in these forums, and nothing works.
Trying what OP suggested just sends me to the battery charging animation screen.
Anybody have any ideas ?
file analysis
I keep can get to the download screen and I hit start and it does the same thing everytime it just does File analysis i cant figure what i am doing wrong here somebody please help me

Thank you for sharing your experience.
I don't have a Captivate yet but am doing research on it and hopeful of getting one. I am confused about one thing.
Every where that I have read about how to enter Recovery mode or Download mode on the Captivate using the 3 button method, it says holding down both Volume UP + Volume Down (plus Power button) will enter Recovery mode. But you say it enters Download mode which is confusing to me. As I recall, to enter Download mode you must press the Vol Down only (plus Power button). Could it be because the phone won't go into Recovery mode, it goes into Download mode instead? Am I missing something?
Thank you!
Download mode is for updating the phone's firmware.
Remove battery, plug in the usb cable to the phone, open ODIN on the computer (need usb drivers installed before hand) on the phone hold volume up and down then plug the phone into the computer. Your phone will say DOWNLOADING. This method works even if you run into problems and the phone refuses to boot properly.
Recovery mode is for installing Update.zip. The method is tricky but involves holding volume up/down and power, the phone will show ATT then go black. It will repeat that but after the second time it goes black let go of power.
If that doesnt work, android debug tools ADB reboot recovery will work even better.
Or root the phone and use Clockwork Rom manager to boot into recovery, just press the menu item.

Thank you askpcguy! I understand the difference between Download and Recovery modes.
So the procedural difference here is having the battery in + Power button, versus battery not in (use USB cable instead) and no Power button. Can the phone get power from the PC via the USB cable? This seems to differ from what the original poster said about download mode. Perhaps OP could edit his original post for clarification? Or am I still missing something? Thanks to all
The phone does get power from the USB cable.
The difference is one procedure uses the USB cable (download mode) and the other does not (Recovery mode).
The volume up+down method does not use the power button, the phone is powered on into download mode once you plug in the USB cable.
We say pull the battery to get the phone powered off. If a firmware flash stalled or doesn't complete, pull the battery and try again!
I now understand the precedural difference.
Thank you askpcguy!
ok so i went to AT&T webiste to install 2.2. well not my phone is stuck on a black screen with the cell phone ! PC picture.. I have tried to hold teh volume keys and power etc.. nothing all i get is that picture.. What can i do to fix this tonite??
Buy a jig. You would have come to that conclusion already if you had bothered searching the forums.
Pull battery, sim, external sd. Put battery back in. hold just volume up and down, plug in usb. Do you get to an android guy with s shovel? If so you will likely recovery tonight. If not you will need a usb jig

^ This. People don't always need a jig. (most cases they won't). Try that first then if every way imaginable of doing that fails. Build a jig (if you know how, there's a thread around here somewhere) or buy one.
well now if anything was CLEAR on the steps to fix this i wouldn't be asking..
I get the android with the shovel sometimes, but when i started the mini keis the install fails.. wants me to do emergency recovery which i do then that fails. that is when i get the cell ! pc screen..
sorry if i am asking.. just new to this and this was my first post..
Forget kies for now, that is not going to help you now, you can get to that screen though correct?
Pull your battery, on the left side on the white sticker is your build number. Something like 1008. What is yours
This should help in many cases.

Flash stock software.
It might just be that you need a new usb cable because I had the same problem where it seem to get stuck when I tried to flash the new firmware and I got the same screen you got but I tried a different usb cable and it worked.
Come on mods do some modding
i think the build # is 1083
I just changed the usb cord. followed these steps:
This only works for the captivate, not any other galaxy s variant.
Situations: phone-!-Computer / no download mode
Black Screen / RST_STATUS 0x0
Procedure:
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Connect usb cable.
5. Hold volume up + volume down + Power.
6. Insert battery.
7. Release POWER BUTTON ONLY.
You should now be in immediate download mode.
Get the android guy with shovel.. downloading etc..
I looked at the odin screen and it shows:
0:[COM7} in the ID:com
But feels like nothing is happening..

If you're trying to upgrade to 2.2 from AT&T then you don't need to enter download mode or recovery mode. First make sure that USB debugging is unchecked.
Go to Menu>Settings>Applications>Development
Go back to Applications>USB Settings
(Recommended) Check ask on connection
Assuming you already have the drivers installed, open Kies mini as this is how to install the update. Plug in the USB cord, check the Kies (firmware update) button on the phone and wait for Kies mini to find your phone.
If it finds your phone it will do the rest. Just be patient. Good Luck!

Good one.. I like how you just gave him a bunch of advice he can't really use in a soft-brick situation, even after quoting him saying that he's soft bricked
I do this regularly (switching between roms and kernals). The easiest way I fix it is to use Odin3_v1.0 and just load some random pda/kernal/modem files in there and run it. When it gets into the OS, just turn it off and use Odin3 to put I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 back on it. Works every time.
I was doing odin to get to download mode and trying odin gb bootloaders for 2.3.3. Now my phone doesnt boot i have a black screen picture of a phone triangle and computer. What did i do and how can i get out of this? Please need help. If I'm not mistaken, the phone -!- PC screen is the equivalent of download mode. I'd unplug your phone, restart Odin, plug phone back in and go from there. I'll defer if someone has a more detailed explanation though

leave the power button alone
power down
hold in volume buttons
insert USB
If you managed to get the GB bootloaders in place (assuming I9000), the download mode key combo is to hold Vol- and Power. If you're still on Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, hold Vol-/Vol+ (with power off), then insert the USB cable.

Unplug your phone, pull your battery for 2+ min. Then open Odin, plug in your USB, press and hold the vol up and vol down, while holding them down, put your battery in. You should see a big triangle with the Android guy . That is Download mode

Reboot your computer
What OS are you running?
Let's run down a quick checklist of things to make sure that you're putting yourself in the best possible place for success:
1. Unplug any cables you have plugged in right now, Turn off ODIN, remove the battery, and reboot your computer.
2. Boot up your computer, let it fully boot and settle. Once it's fully settled, double-check to make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed for the Captivate (and that's its for the correct version of Windows - x86 or x64).
3. Assuming the drivers are present and correct, start up ODIN (You might try the One-Click to Stock, as it will take you back to a stock state). Let it sit for right now.
4. Plug your USB cable into a port that connects directly to the motherboard (but not to your phone just yet). On a desktop, it will be on the back of the machine. On a laptop, you may have to find it by trial and error.
5. Reinsert the battery. Hold Vol+/Vol-, and then insert your USB cable. This should put you in download mode. If not, pull the cable, remove the battery, reinsert the battery, and hold Vol- and power until download mode appears, then insert the USB cable.
6. Assuming you are in download mode, and the cable is inserted, check to see if ODIN recognized the phone. If not, try a different USB port on the computer. You may have to reboot your computer between trials.
7. If ODIN still won't recognize the phone, you may need to look into using Heimdall to flash.
Post back if you have questions.

I thought I remember seeing somewhere a ways back that from this alternate d/l screen Odin may not recognize the phone, but that flashing Odin package would work anyway.
Pretty sure I saw that...but at this point, can't hurt to try. Otherwise jig should get you there.

Here is what happened. I was on CM7 with blue cwm, flashed paranoid android successfully, phone works, calls/mms work, everything works but i get rainbow cwm. In order to fix this i followed the directions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705260, was on step 3 when i installed kies i had the phone connected to the computer via usb. After kies installed i received an error in windows saying the usb device could not be recognized. Since then no matter what i try i can not get the phone into download mode.
Things i have tried:
1- pulling battery, reinserting, holding +- volume while attaching usb cable
2- different usb cable
3- different computers
4- turning on and off debug mode
5- mounting usb via cwm (pretty sure thats what i selected, hard to see with cwm so messed up)
6- uninstalling and re-installing kies+drivers
Any ideas?
***UPDATE: Fixed... installed 2.3.6 rom with red cwm, then installed PA through red cwm. Download mode now works and rainbow cwm fixed, doesn't make 100% sense but it is fixed...
Outstanding pls change title to SOLVED.

Ok so I jumped the gun early last night in assuming it was fixed. As my update states on red cwm and no rainbows, I can get into download mode through cwm (advanced menu). That's as far as I got last night before I went to bed, this morning I went to re-install PA since the phone was stuck at samsung logo (like PA thread says in installation procedures) and i got an installation error. Went into download mode to put today's update on it and found out the PC was unable to recognize the phone. I tried un-installing kies and just installing the infuse drivers, when i connect the phone i get an error saying the device is not recognizable. Tried un-installing the drivers and reinstalling kies+drivers and get the same device is not recognizable error. I also tried different usb cords and on a laptop and get the same device not recognizable on both computers.
Really at a loss now on what to do since the same error is happening on two different computers, something must be wrong with the phone or cwm? Unable to follow un-brick guides since odin won't recognize the phone... Any ideas?

Since you can get into CWM, there is still so much hope for you, it'll just require trying a bunch more stuff but you will figure out out.
IDEAS:
Did you try installing PA again via CWM? If you are still on red CWM, that means you're not on an ICS kernel yet. You want blue CWM. Maybe try installing the PA zip a couple more times after doing a wipe.
If you're still on red CWM, you might be able to still install a GB rom that might be on your SD card to at least get you out of the mess for now.
For Odin/Heimdell, did you try other other USB ports, besides the 1 on each computer? Can you still get into download mode via the battery pull + volume buttons? The USB cord can be plugged into the computer before you put the battery back. I would trust that before the CWM download mode. Do you get the construction sign triangle that says "do not remove target"? That's what you want for Odin or Heimdell.

First off thanks for the help!
I was on blue cwm before I installed PA, it gave me the raindbow cwm so i figured i had froyo bootloaders still, which is what started this whole mess.
I am still on red cwm but I can not install roms off my external zip since the phone isn't seeing it, even when i try to unmount/mount it through cwm. The only rom i have is PA which is on internal sd that my phone does see. Unfortunately every time I try to install that rom now it says "successfully installed" then has an error that starts with assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "aries".
Regarding the other USB ports I have tried multiple ports on multiple computers (3 now), my newer one doesn't have usb 1.0 so I know for a fact I was using a 2.0 port, I have tried ports directly connected to the mobo and ports in the front of the case.
And here is the kicker that's really messing me up and what makes me hit a brick wall with every single post I read about this problem. I do get the yellow construction sign that says 'do not remove target', when i plug my phone into the computer with that sign on the screen the computer immediately says 'USB Device Not Recognized', then 'Device driver software was not successfully installed'. What kills me is I get this error on all 3 machines I have tried so far, with different usb cables. Since im getting this error I can not do odin or heimdall.
Sounds super frustrating. I haven't been stuck like that in a while..
Maybe remove the "solved" from your post and others might have ideas too.
I don't know about your cwm, but on mine i can access my external sd through the option called "install zip from INTERNAL sd card." That is different than the usual "install from zip" option. It's a few options down from the regular "install from zip". It is totally backwards, but let's me install from my external sd.
You are obviously having driver issues...so here is this best thing to do...do not use Odin, just try heimdal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Heimdal does not require drivers from kies or Samsung....in fact it uses its own custom drivers
Run heimdal
Connect phone in download mode
Press flash
It may say it needs to install drivers, just do as it says and follow the onscreen instructions to install the custom drivers
Continue with the flash
***when it finishes do not close the heimdal...leave it open***
Put phone back in download mode and flash again, except this time check the box for flash bootloaders-that will fix rainbows
Download mode:
Pull battery
Put battery back in
Hold volume up+down simutaniously *don't touch that power button*
While holding both volume buttons plug USB into both phone and computer
***also make sure you have java installed or else heimdall might not work***

When the phone boots up in download mode i get a msg on the taskbar saying "usb device not recognized" and heimdall never changes from 'device status: disconnected", the big flash button is grayed out. I tried on two different desktops, tried different usb ports including 2.0 and 3.0, tried two different samsung branded cables. Frustrating

Are you entering dl mode through cwm or manually? I've never had luck going through cwm...although I think you stated earlier you couldn't enter dl mode the manual way

Tried both, although I am not 100% sure im in correct download mode manual way. When i enter download mode through red cwm i get the yellow construction sign but the pc never recognizes the phone it seems. Going the manual route the phone gets stuck on the samsung logo with the 4 buttons lit up on the bottom and the pc says "usb device not recognized". So it seems the PC is seeing something the manual route but the yellow construction sign never pops up.

The Samsung logo should not pop up at all so your either doing something wrong the manual way or your infuse doesn't wanna go the manual way
It may be that your power button is borked...been seeing that a little lately...
When entering download mode it should go straight to the yellow triangle thing or to the option to enter download mode or reboot phone...again when entering download mode you should never see the Samsung logo first

OK well that makes sense, the phone refuses to go into download mode the manual way. I am 100% positive I am not touching the power button during the process.
I am unplugging from usb and removing battery
Holding both volume buttons
re-inserting battery with volume buttons held
re-inserting usb cable with volume buttons held
it goes straight to samsung logo every time

if you put battery in without usb will it bootup to samsung logo by it self? if that happens then it supports the possibility that your power button is borked
also may wanna try this method to get into download mode as ive heard of it working for others
pull battery
hold volume keys
plug usb in
place battery back in
and as a last resort there's always usb jigs which i think you can buy for like 5 or 10 bucks on ebay

Ok progress is made! Not sure why it worked this time but I was able to get into download mode manually! The phone immediately went to the yellow construction sign. I cleaned out the area around the power button with an air compressor (not a can), was probably just real dirty from pocket scum. Heimdall still says disconnected
Ok semi-success!
Heimdall recognizes the phone now!
When i go to flash it pops up a window with some instructions for zadig.exe (wants me to select samsung usb in next window), however when i select options -> list all devices it doesnt show samsung usb in the drop down menu. Just 'Gadget Serial' 'Gadget Serial (Interface 0)' and my IR receiver (its a htpc that finally recognized the phone).
Not sure what to do now...
Fixed!
Just used odin and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27286083#post27286083 !
Sweet now back to stock and can work on getting back to yummy ICS from here... what a learning experience! Seems it all came down to a dirty power button...
Thanks for the help everyone!
Awesome! Glad you figured it out somehow. You might want to download zen arcade's infuse toolkit or some roms and throw them on your phone just in case something crazy happens during a flash again.
Can not get into download mode or switch on... Please help!
I have Samsung Infuse 4G and I was on Froyo and tried to root my phone with Odin3 v1.7 (I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.tar); however, messed up something now I am not able to switch on the phone or get into download mode or any boot loop screen ... nothing at all... on black screen which shows image of mobile and PC and one yellow triangle between them with "!" sign...
Someone please help me... if there is any way to fix this... or my phone is dead for ever...
Use Odin on that screen, same as download screen

I hope i'm in the right board for this, if not i'm sorry, but i've run into a major issue recently.
While working on installing MIUI on my Galaxy S 4G from Tmobile I hit a point where it turned offand absolutely nothing is happening. I don't remember when exactly this happened but I think it was after something with odin.
It's not detected by Kies or anything, it's just off and nothing can get it to turn back on. I left it on the charger and went to sleep last night, this morning it still isn't doing anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In the state that it's in, I believe the phone will still boot into Download Mode, even though nothing appears on the screen. Odin will still recognize the device if it is booted into download mode.
Just open the back cover and remove the battery. It is also recommended you remove the SD card and SIM card. Put the battery back in, and connect the usb cable while holding the power up button, and plug it into your computer. Open up Odin and it should recognize the device still. If it doesn't, try these steps again until it does.
Since you were trying to flash MIUI, we should be safe to assume you're running Gingerbread on your SGS4G, so you can download a stock, Odin flashable ROM from here. Flash that using the PDA in Odin, let it reboot, and you should be fine again.
If you have any further questions that need answering, refer to the SGS4G community.

Thanks for the help, currently i'm attempting to get Odin to recognize it with no success. I've gone through the process about 3 times and will continue till I hopefully get some results. If it makes any difference I don't hear the sound of windows detecting a new USB device anymore like i use to when I would put it into download mode.
As far as I remember, Windows doesn't make a sound when booting into Download Mode. I just realized I made an error in my previous post. You need to be holding the volume up button when you plug it into the computer. In some cases you will need to hold the power button at the same time. Try giving it the volume up + power on button when you plug into your PC. Make sure you're holding the button combo long enough for the SGS4G to power on and into Download.
