[Q] How to change the update server? - Captivate General

Hi, I bought a AT&T Captivate and I'm with Rogers. Is there a way to change the update server when I look for a software update? Right now it tries to connect to AT&T's server. Thanks.

If there's an update it'll probably make it's way onto this forum.

I know, but what if Rogers releases FroYo before AT&T which will likely happen?

Someone will probably post it here anyway. There is a DB file on your phone that stores all the DM information, servers, time til the next update, etc. Ill see if I can find it. You would just need to swap this file with one from a Rogers captivate.

[Q ] Rogers or AT&T?

Hi all! I live in Argentina and I want to buy a Captivate either in USA or Canada (can do both). The reason is they are $200 cheaper there. Yes, i know.
Well, the question is which Captivate to get, the i897 or the i896 (Rogers). I believe there are no GPS issues with the Rogers version but I'm not sure if one can use the custom roms from the i897 on it, and if the gps still works fine when the rom is changed.
I'd really like to be able to use the gps.
Please help me decide...
Its going to be hard to find an answer since most people here only have one or the other however i can say this
I bought mine from rogers and had absolutely no problems with the gps
I then installed a gingerclone rom which is 2.2 and there were no problems with the gps
I also upgraded to the 2.2 froyo ATT using odin and still no gps issues :S.
So basically... If your going to upgrade it to a rom you like, it should be fine
Get the rogers one if you don't want the ATT branding on the front of the phone. The rogers captivate only has the samsung logo on it.
Also the rogers captivate stock allows for side loading and mobile ap.

My biggest gripe right now is problems with unlocking the phone. I've read the forum but found that a lot of people report mixed experiences with this.
I believe they share the exact same radio bands, so you're free to choose. Anecdotally, it seems people are happier with the Rogers one... and many of them were probably built later (newer) than the AT&T ones which may help avoid some of the gremlins that early adopters have reported.
Yeah, but unlocking seems to be very hard and not at all a certainty...

[Q] Unlocked Infuse 4G won't allow me to manually select network

So I'm in Bangkok this week, and I have my unlocked stock rooted Infuse 4G with me and my Tru Mobile Roaming SIM won't connect to the right network because the stock rom points to the default AT&T roaming partners, and when I try to manually select a network the manual selection is greyed out.
I read somewhere on here that going into app SamServMode and selecting debug and Debug Screen and Phone Control and Network Control then select Manual it doesn't allow for selection.
The issue is the phone is preferring a different network than my SIM has a roaming agreement with, so I need to be able to manually select. Anyone know of a solution without changing roms?
Thanks!
Anyone? I bought a local DTAC sim and it works fine since DTAC is the official AT&T roaming partner the ROM allows hooking on to it, but still can't use non-DTAC sims as the rom doesn't allow manual network selection
Bump.
Can anyone help her?

So I'm heading home to the states in 24 hours... but I do think this is an interesting topic hopefully someone can assist with. Seems that even when unlocked, a carrrier cannot be manually selected, leaving roaming limited to the carriers att allows even when using another carriers global sim. Seems a limitation of stock rom but is the first time I've seen this on a phone.
Bella i've got the solution for you...
Flash the rogers modem..
The att modems have this feature lockedout, so any changes revert back.... I can confirm that the rogers modem gives full access to changing the network and it does stick....
Do so by pressing *#2263# with rogers modem.... You can then manually select the network to lock onto.

Nice! Wish I'd known this last week, hehe. Just walked in the door back home from my Tokyo flight, dohh.
So how do I get and flash the Rogers radio? And why does typing this bring back memories from Airplane! ???

Do I need to install modded 3E recovery first, or just flash it from a stock rooted state in CWM?
I've not flashed a new radio before on this phone, so a step by step would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Just out of curiosity do custom ROMs have this limitation?

Well I keep finding things that are limiting my experience with this phone. It's definitely been negative overall in comparison to my old Inspire 4g, which was so open, with many ROMs available, and none of the locked down attributes of this Infuse 4G.
So is it really the radio, or is it the ROM? And what are the upsides\downsides to flashing the Rogers ROM? I definitely need to be able to manually select my network, so if's become a non-issue, just need to know what the best way to accomplish it.
Advice\suggestions?
The limitations are built into the modem package.... Not the rom.
Right now the rogers modem performance (and when we say modem, we mean the modem software that tells the radio how to communicate with the network) is on par with the newest att modem with the only difference I can see it the being able to manually select any network.
Bella as for you, unless you rather use odin, to flash with clockworkmod you indeed need the modded 3e recovery and the I9000 version of cwm on your phone...

I installed mod'd 3e Recovery just fine, then flashed the radio posted above in this thread. Seems to have flashed fine, however the manual network selection is STILL greyed out. Any ideas as to why? Seems like another member who said the ROM (Stock AT&T Rooted) is responsible. Are you sure this isn't the case? Any idea as to why I can't manually select a network now?
Thanks!
Now with the Rogers Modem installed, when I go into Network Selection it still is greyed out and says "Default Setup" .. put in a foreign SIM that has both AT&T and T-Mobile USA provisioning allowed, and it doesn't let me select which to use.
:-(
Guess this doesn't resolve the issue. Anyone else have solution as to what I can do to get that Network Selection box available to use? This is the first phone I have ever owned that has disallowed access when I put in a foreign sim. It's getting really annoying dealing with Samsung's inadequacies between flashing and operational limitations, ugh. I would go back to HTC in a heartbeat if the Inspire 4G got better battery life. :-(

I'm just baffled. How is there not a solution that'll allow me to select the network I attach to? I'm not even an AT&T customer. I paid full price for my handset, it's fully unlocked, doesn't even have the AT&T radio anymore, yet I can't select the carrier in the carrier selection menu? I weep for the future of this country's wireless industry if the ATT\T-MO merger goes through.

Huh?
a) I'm able to use it just fine, why would you never buy it without contract? That makes no sense.
b) How are you having trouble unlocking it? It's the easiest unlock of any phone ever made. Doesn't get any more simple. Takes 10 seconds.

[q] some nv issues.

What's up guys? i'm from the evo community!
First off, i'd like to say once I get my issue resolved we'll be seeing some new exciting things from me.
Now I don't have much in this field.
Apperently I bought an evo shift flashed to metro, but it had a good esn on sprint, so i flashed it back.
now it drops signal and when it is in service the banner says "mymetropcs.com"
does anyone have any details on how to at least fix the banner?
it doesn't fix itself under qpst or cdma ws.
If its the banner in the notifications menu, I'm almost certain that's controlled by the prl

Just wondering if this is a solution for the Shift, I heard it on the EVO 4G forum but haven't tested it. Has anyone attempted RUU to a previous version then taking an OTA update?
I heard whenever the 2.3 update rolled our and it came with a new NV, the OTA wrote the proper things to NV. I would think it would do the same thing for the PRI.
Just advocating something I heard but haven't tested it.

No 4G after 4.0.4 update, T-Mobile

Called T-Mobile up, it is a software bug that HTC is actively working on. In the mean time, I have NO 3G/4G. I'm stuck on GSM 2G. :/
They coughed up the data portion of my bill, which was nice. Is there any way to fix it in the meantime?
I get 4G fine!

Same here. Not getting 4G. Seems like quite a few is experiencing it. Look at the Tmobile support forums for HTC one S.
Flash a custom Rom, get 4g back. At the very least I would root and take a look at the build.prop settings, might be something simple in there. If you'd like, upload your build.prop file so we can check out out

Would I still be able to revert back to stock rom jus incase I have to return it.
Well... now that I can't downgrade via RUU... :/
Alright, I can't take it anymore. CM10 didn't fix the issue AT ALL. I am stuck on Edge no matter what ROM I'm on.
Here is the thread on T-Mobile's forums about the problem
support.t-mobile.com/thread/33209?tstart=0 (I'm a new user here, can't post links, you'll have to cut and paste)
The problem appears to be specific to certain phones. I tried my SIM card in a demo phone at the T-Mobile store and we updated their phone to the latest version while I was there and it did not have a problem connecting to the 4G network.
I checked the software versions on their phone vs. mine and they all match.
This update contains a new HBOOT and radio update. Because of the HBOOT update, there is no way to roll back to a previous version. I am guessing that the problem is with the radio update since custom roms do not appear to fix the problem. Because of the new HBOOT, there doesn't appear to be a way to downgrade the radio either.
I contacted HTC and they were no help. They told me they were aware of the problem and were working on it, but had no ETA for a fix. T-Mobile told me they were unable to exchange the phone since there is no guarantee the new phone won't have the same problem.
The problem is a hardware issue with the one s.
Turns out a chip is fried affecting your 4g.
Even after installing another Rom, it won't fix your problem.
Happened to me and I got mine replaced.
It's not specific to the 4.0.4 update. It affects non upgraded phones as well.
If your not getting 4g then you got a bad phone.

I was getting 4G fine right before the update. Right after the update, no 4G. Others have had the exact same problem caused by the update. T-Mobile says it is a problem with the update affecting certain handsets. HTC says it is a problem with the update affecting certain handsets.
Are you saying the process of applying the update is frying certain handsets since the problem is only showing up by applying the update?
There is no 4g for the one S because the chipset does not support 4g.
If I helped in any way please hit thanks
I happened to encounter this issue. But my handset was defective because it was brand new and I'm stuck on 2g. I am waiting on a replacement phone. I literally just had it delivered today and it sucks having this problem right out of the box.

That is how mine was. My phone got "4G" (HSPA+) before the update, no luck after the update.
Same problem here with 4. 0.4. Went to CM10 and got 4G again. My MMS doesn't work though
I actually had this happen on the phone I bought directly from my local T-Mobile store last Friday (10/05). I went back in the next day after discovering the thread on the T-Mobile support forums, and they exchanged the phone for me in-store, there on the spot. I have perfectly functioning 4G now, but I'm terrified to run the update for fear of it happening again.
Does any one know if there's any kind of data specifying a certain production run of phones, or anything of that nature?

Are you retarded?
trmacdonal that is not very nice.
And not really in any way helpful.
According to the most recent post in the T-Mobile support thread, HTC is aware of the issue, has no idea what is causing it, and has no ETA for a fix. Glad I went and got another phone when I did, but I'm fairly miffed that I can't update without fear of turning my smartphone in a, well... phone.
Interesting that this happens only after the 4.0.4 update. I'd like to keep my fast connection; is there a way to keep the phone from downloading and applying the update?
I had a similar issue with my HTC G2 two years ago. HSPA icon appeared, but only one arrow would flash; no connectivity. I could connect to the Internet only using 2G and WiFi. Some devices had the issue, others did not. It lasted for about a month or two, then the issue magically disappeared. Perhaps they rolled updates when the problem occurred and resolved, I'm not sure. If I disabled WiFi on the G2, sometimes the HSPA would connect; there seemed to be an issue switching from WiFi to HSPA. Unfortunately, it sounds like the One S has a slightly different issue. I'll continue to monitor this thread and the one at support.t-mo.

I posted the update that you can update using odin
don't get the this one Baseband version: G892AUCU2BRC5. Even though I tried to factory reset but I am still getting issues with the navigation bar.
Still waiting for the newest update like from Tmobile. I will never buy any AT&T ****ty phone again. Hard, slow to get an update, require a relative ATT Sim card.

Yeah...you know, you can install T-Mobile firmware over the AT&T device. Also, that nav bar issue is singular, meaning just you. so what ever it is you're doing, doesn't happen to anyone else. Another thing, if you live somewhere where a USA carrier doesn't provide service, DO NOT buy that phone. Plain and simple, only buy what your service provider or country offers. If you don't you lose out on bands, sometimes LTE entirely, Slow LTE because of the advanced technology only being able to be used on the carrier for the device, and as with the case of AT&T, software updates. The only reason you people are able to even have OTA zips AT ALL is because AT&T has **** security with their OTA server. The only other method to get updates would be Odin firmware, which AT&T doesn't RELEASE, it has to be leaked by companies with a GSPN account, which BTW cost ALOT of money, so the firmware itself is a solid $20 for those who do buy it to share to people here on XDA. And just so everyone knows, this method of pulling OTAs for you people will be patched because Samsung has had enough of their test builds getting leaked by some peachy ***** like me that pull their OTAs from AT&T. However long it takes, who knows, but it's gonna happen. By the way, most of this isn't directed just at you so you understand that, this is to the public in general. Sorry guys but it's true.

I just got the new update from ATT, I have to borrow my friend ATT sim like usual. But the new version still has not fixed yet.
I also understand what did you say for the nav bar issues above, but mine is different, not the same results on Google search.
For example:
-Youtube or Google maps is auto minimize after 2 minutes or more on screen.
-Games are automatically back to "waiting screen" in any game.
-All require fingerprints applications automatically back to fingerprint require screen while I was using it.
So I know the issue is the "back" button, I did try to change its location, hide the nav bar, but the same issues. So I know that it does not come from the physical, it is the software.
I did buy an S6 Active 3 years ago so I know the update issues that I have to face with, but Tmobile released their S8 Active too late and I did not know that.

This firmware is nougat, so whatever problem you're having with the nav bar if it wasn't there in previous updates, this should fix it. Then you can OTA whenever and see if it's just Oreo you don't like, which is fine because you can stay on nougat. And also root I believe.
Oh wait, are you saying you want the BRD4 or whatever update?
