[Q ] Rogers or AT&T? - Captivate General

Hi all! I live in Argentina and I want to buy a Captivate either in USA or Canada (can do both). The reason is they are $200 cheaper there. Yes, i know.
Well, the question is which Captivate to get, the i897 or the i896 (Rogers). I believe there are no GPS issues with the Rogers version but I'm not sure if one can use the custom roms from the i897 on it, and if the gps still works fine when the rom is changed.
I'd really like to be able to use the gps.
Please help me decide...

Its going to be hard to find an answer since most people here only have one or the other however i can say this
I bought mine from rogers and had absolutely no problems with the gps
I then installed a gingerclone rom which is 2.2 and there were no problems with the gps
I also upgraded to the 2.2 froyo ATT using odin and still no gps issues :S.
So basically... If your going to upgrade it to a rom you like, it should be fine

Get the rogers one if you don't want the ATT branding on the front of the phone. The rogers captivate only has the samsung logo on it.
Also the rogers captivate stock allows for side loading and mobile ap.

My biggest gripe right now is problems with unlocking the phone. I've read the forum but found that a lot of people report mixed experiences with this.

I believe they share the exact same radio bands, so you're free to choose. Anecdotally, it seems people are happier with the Rogers one... and many of them were probably built later (newer) than the AT&T ones which may help avoid some of the gremlins that early adopters have reported.

Yeah, but unlocking seems to be very hard and not at all a certainty...

[Q] G2X on AT&T data issues?

Sorry if this is redundant folks, but a friend of my stepfather has been having some issues. He recently purchased a G2X, used it for a month or 2 on T-Mobile, but now wants to switch to AT&T with his girlfriend. He's gotten pretty far, getting the IMEI from T-Mo and getting it actually unlocked. He's now got Calls and Texts up and running on AT&T's network, but he can't get any data to work. We know that 3G won't work on it, but we assumed EDGE would.
Any help here? I'm sure it something reasonably simple.
Please and thanks, XDA!
There's a thread in the SGS2 dev section with AT&T's APN settings. They probably need to be changed in the phone.
Mine is unlocked and I tried my wife's at&t sim and had no issues connecting to internet. Not that that helps you, just wanted to throw in my experience. I wonder if it makes a difference which type of rate/data plan the at&t sim is on.
G2X CM7
Thanks Barry, I found that thread and sent him the APN settings. I'll post back tomorrow with results.
And thanks for your input phburks. The reason why yours worked may be that you're running CM. Our g2x is running stock Android.

LTE Problems in North Dallas?

Any other Skyrocket users having LTE problems in North Dallas as of yesterday? I've ALWAYS had LTE everywhere I've gone in the DFW area since they switched on LTE, but as of yesterday I don't have LTE, and have data dropouts altogether, at home. LTE still works a few miles away from my home.
I've flashed several Radios and done all of the fixes people recommend, so I'm fairly certain it's an AT&T problem, but AT&T told me they don't have any tower outages around me.
No problems here in Irving. I am on rooted stock UCLD2 leak.

I'm currently on UCLD2 Sky ICS 4.2d-4. I flashed back to UCLC4, then stock rooted 2.3.6 on UCLA3. All of them had the same results, no LTE, data dropping.
I'm in Frisco, it doesn't work at my home, but a few miles west, north, or south it works just fine.
No issues here either... I'm on some ROM... new to the skyrocket, tried 3 different ROMs, and so far hated them all. However, all work on LTE
Any advice on an ICS ROM that DOESN'T look like GB?
I've been having some issues with it in downtown Dallas lately. It will show lte but I get little or no connectivity.

It had to have been LTE outage up north of Dallas. It was spotty for 2 days, like I say in the OP, and then it magically started working again and I haven't had problems since.
I'm using Sean's Sky ICS 4.2d and it is GREAT. My battery life is amazing and it's stable.
As M0D said, I hear really good things about his NexusMod. I'm tempted to try it, but I feel comfy with Sky ICS right now. I like all of the AOSP and CM9 that NexusMod has.
Yea, I'm actually on NexusMod ICS and was very happy to see a ROM that looked the closest to ICS. And glad you posted here M0D. I've been a lurker for my other android devices for a while, but my low post count forbids me to ask questions on your ROM thread, so I hope yall don't mind if I ask them here.
1. Why does the lock button not actually lock the phone?
2. Similar to other ROMs, the AT&T check for the MobileAP... can you remove that?
3. I'm assuming I can use a special dial code to use Google Voice as my voicemail service instead of AT&T, but my previously rooted phones could do it no problem.
4. Not sure what your future plans are, but will you be including the "People" app and the raw ICS phone/dialer app anytime soon?
In general, I like the ROM except for all the AT&T stuff that still seems to be lingering. Of course, if I screwed something up, please let me know so I can get rid of these restrictions. Thanks!

T-Mobile subscribers: How is your GPS before and after modifications?

The G2x is my third Android phone. Prior to this, I had the Optimus M on MetroPCS, then the Optimus V on Virgin Mobile. GPS and navigation worked amazing on the Optimus V and would lock on instantly.
When I first got the G2x,I noticed that GPS was practically unusable. By the time it takes for the phone to acquire a lock, I'd either be lost or already at my destination. Before I had my phone rooted, I'd access the LG secret menu and try to make changes there, but it didn't seem like anything made a big difference.
I've been rooted for a few months now and running various ICS ROMs and GPS is still hit or miss. Sometimes it'll lock at a reasonable time, others it's just wasting my battery and not helping me. Then, even when I am locked, or often will lose the GPS signal and have to search for it again.
Is this a T-Mobile thing or a G2x thing or is it my location? I live near Oakland in the SF bay so I'd think we'd have good service over here.
What is your experience with GPS on this phone and carrier? I honestly want to switch to Sprint once my contract is up (and might even terminate early). Thanks to the development community here, the G2x is finally a decent phone, but I've only been unimpressed by T-Mobile's service since coming from Virgin Mobile.

GPS has nothing to do with T-mobile. It has more to do with the phones hardware and some with it's software. The newest baseband that was just released for the G2x has fixed all my GPS problems I get a lock quickly now and it works great for navigation and it also improved my call sound quality, but there is a lack of custom ROMs for the new baseband currently the best you can do is the rooted stock V21Y.
So basically stuck with nad GPS unless o want to update baseband or get a different phone?

i basically had the exact same experience as you are describing. But, only while I was on the march 2011 baseband. is that the same baseband that you are on? Fortunately once i upgraded to the July 15 2011 baseband i now have instant locks. (and can flash any custom rom with instant locks. primarily stock 2.3.3 roms. Any higher i usually run into slow lock times Ex:Cm7 based roms.
The new March baseband is the only to fly. Here's my lock in under 5 seconds.

You genuinely want to upgrade to the new 21y firmware, I was Oakland CA today and I had no problem using Waze to navigate around the big mess on 880S on way to airport. GPS on my g2x was way better than the iPhone from work, but never would have been able to do that with the older 21e firmware.

2 different companies
2 different philosophies
there is no bootloaders to worry about or s-off or any of that crap on samsung phones. its easy to swap out the modems without bricking your device
HTC phones are completely different. swap out the radio and if the radio doesnt work, it will probably brick it.
Samsung has ODIN and Heimdall which are lifesavers when it comes to hacking
HTC has......... RUUs as long as you didnt brick with a bad radio flash
also, the tmo samsung t989 and the skyrocket 727 are the SAME phone....with only a change to some firmware and i believe the positioning of the accellorometer
i really wish that hack had never been discovered because since then, EVERY device that comes out that same question gets asked.....its not fair! they can do it on phone X how come it wont work on phone M?!?
i didnt take all of that stuff into consideration. well i guess i will hold onto my skyrocket for now. thx!
Seeing as the One S gets both AT&T and T-Mobile 3G/4G I assume AT&T purposely blocked the bands because they suck.
Hey guys, try to put all your efforts into this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610323
Hope isn't lost. It should work, but it won't be as easy as swapping radios from an identical device.

Captivate wifi calling with t-mobile sim card

Hi, I have a question about my Samsung captivate that is unlocked and running CM9. I have a phone plan with tmobile, and was wondering if I could get the wifi calling feature that is on the vibrant on my captivate. I am comfortable with flashing custom roms and the like, so if I have to make some changes, that is fine.
In short, my question is “Can I get the wifi calling app that is available on the tmobile vibrant on my unlocked captivate running CM9”.
Thanks, Ben Finch
I'm going to assume you have an up to date SIM from T-Mobile. Some older cards that came out just about the time the vibrant did were incompatible with Wi-Fi calling, and required people to get new ones. So, if it doesn't work, that's a possibility.
I work in a phone store, got to see that action first hand.
As for Wi-Fi calling, you shouldn't have to hack unless you're running a stock Rom on the captivate that has unknown source installations (side loading) blocked by default. If that's the case, browse the stickies.
Wi-Fi calling, last I checked, was simply a regular apk. Check out the vibrant and galaxy s 4g forums, I'm sure it's posted there somewhere. I'm out of town and using my phone, otherwise I'd be able to extract it from my wife's g2 and post it. PM me if you don't find it there, I think I can get it from my desktop eventually.

Hi Ben,
I'm having the same exact issue. Did you ever find a solution? If so, please advise. Both Samsung and T-Mobile reps say it's not possible to have Wi-Fi calling with Captivate. Seems there should be a way.
