What's the best app for memory management? - Captivate General

I'm running cognition 2.4.1 on my captivate and it's great unless my memory is low and then it's laggy and slow. 304mb of available ram for this phone is a joke so i need a way to manage my memory so that i have at least 100mb of ram free always or else it slows down. Does anyone know of an app that does that? i don't want a task killer. I'm getting sick of having to always use level 2 ram clear on the integrated froyo task manager. Also, I'm running launcher pro.

Android. You don't need to manage your memory; Android does this effectively and efficiently. Google the topic and you'll find a lot of information.

Get one of the i9000 roms with the setiron kernel, it has 343mb of memory available.

Oh i see. Is it as fast as cognition 2.4.1 and has ext4 lag fix imbedded? Can you give me the link please?

Obviously it doesn't because I always have to click the level 2 ram clear or else it runs like a htc hero. I don't want it to use more than the amount i specify. If my phone had 512mb of ram than this wouldn't be an issue, mine shows 304mb free. What a mess.

Im not sure why but in the past week, my phone ram was was quite low. (30m - 45m) Before that, even after playing games and stuff, the ram was always above 55m. I have the go sms app, i have lookout running always and battery notifier (big text) to tell me my battery level. these were the apps that i downloaded just before the raam went low. oh and i only have 4 widgets running on my screen. (google search widget, power control widget (the one with options to toggle wifi, bluetooth etc etc on and off), a go taskmanager widget to show me how much ram i have and a music app widget) BTW im rooted running stock 2.1. Hope someone can help me!

must've been the services or processes running hidden in the background. there are some apps you can use to kill or stop them. but mainly i just use autokiller memory optimizer to modify android's default app killer to kill apps even when the ram is not very low(it kills apps when ram reaches a certain level). theres also a function in autokiller memory optimizer which allows you to kill processes. if you want more ram, you could use swap too, but it eats more battery, so i dont.
its a good app, and you dont have to use any task killers anymore. you can use the strict preset in the app if you want higher free ram. swap if you activate swap, you could go up to more than 100m free.

oh ya i forgot to mention i have already been using autokiller memory optimizer at strict level for a month already. yesterday i changed it to aggressive hoping that my ram would increase but to no avail.
then it'd be that you have to many processes running it in the background. see from autokiller memory optimizer. just tap to close. swap gives you a LOT of free ram also. but you have to be using a swap compatible rom of course, so stock but rooted, no. unless u are using the eclair strikes back rom. im also on stock singapore but rooted. average free ram now is around 50 and im underclocked running at 500mhz cos i wanna save battery. its still running smoothly. actually, i dont really care about how much free ram there is, if its smooth then its all right for me. is your phone running smoothly?

My suggestion would be to flash the stock Cincinnati bell sbf. I did that recently it is the most updated one from Motorola and is set at 720 MHz by default. I don't use anything and my ram is around 55-60. Smooth as hell. I use launcherpro. Its prettier, you can choose the keep in memory option which stops it from redrawing the screen. Mine is rooted. I get a day and half of battery life with wifi and autosync in 100% of the time, an hour of GPS, 1 hour gaming, one hour music and the odd texts or calls. Hope that helps. Nothing in my opinion beats stock 2.1

If you have 30m-45m ram and it didn't affect the performance of the phone, then nothing to worry....now if your rom is in the 2.1 stock, you have a problem especially in using camcorder due to low memory... my suggestion is to flash the 2.2 rom like wahhu rom, xda special or the cm6...My ram is in the range of 30m-60m and I'm using the wanhu rom and even the cm6 rom still the performance of the phone is great..... Actually there is something in the phone that eats the ram..... It is one of the reasons why there is a problem in porting the cm7.
P.S. Try to flash the original wanhu rom then apply the latest update of Mioze-update-SC_2.2_XT720_Beta3a-Mz05 and the dark froyo theme.....

[POLL] RAM consumption test request

It looks like KJ3 ROM on captivate uses more RAM that KH3. To confirm this can I reuest guys to post their RAM usage for KH, KI and all KJ versions. Please use TaskManager to clear memory and note the base RAM......it may not be accurate but will give an idea. In my experience KH3 runs around 170 MB and KJ3 is at 230 MB.
Thanks for any input

Yes, but if you follow peoples comments on KJ3, like I am doing, KJ3 is using a much larger RAM amount, AND when further customized by adding apps, live wallpapers etc, is actually SLOWING the phone considerably. This making the phone real sluggish........which is new for a android ROM......??
EDIT: would you mind sharing your ROM and RAM?

I agree with this especially on the KJ3......Something is different in what is running in the background, and I hope I can investigate if this turns out to be true for other people.
I agree and went back to fatsy ki rom and it stays faster longer without lag.
I also monitor free ram and once it gets below 40, it lags badly, over 50 it flies.

Fusion x beta kj3 267mb Ram used ATM. But no lag whatsoever.
If you find that the ram does get bogged down just on this firmware version then perhaps the lmk settings in the kernel aren't as aggressive, which would be easily fixed by SOURCE CODE.

Point well taken........
But due you expect LMK to let ~100 MB slip by? It seems a little too much, since the limit on cappy is about 370 (usable). I would think we so much consumption LMK would kick in earlier?????
My KJ3 is using 227 MB. Free memory is ~50 MB. It lags significantly at times. However, I used Auto Memory Manager and set the Android internal task killer to "aggressive" and it keeps ~100 MB free an there is not lag at all now. I haven't noticed (yet) that apps get killed prematurely, which could be an issue with this setting. I'm using the Samurai 1.2 kernel overclocked to 1.252 GHz (no Voodoo lag fix). Other than the occasional black screen on the Gallery, my Captivate has been running pretty fast and seems to have as good a battery life as I remember ever having.
Edit #1: I don't think Auto Memory Manager is needed with Samurai 1.2. This kernel is tweaked already. I set Auto Memory Manager back to default settings, uninstalled it, then re-installed the kernel.
Here's another tip, move all of your apps from the internal SD card to phone memory. Having them on the SD card cause significant lag, crashing, and rebooting for me.
Edit #2: I switched to Pinnacle 1.3 with the latest Boog's kernel, and my KH3 is using 329 MB (the same as KJ3 I was using before (I must have made a typo above when I claimed 227 MB on KJ3 (I verified this before I switched to KH3/Pinnacle)). What governs how much RAM is used? Does it really make any difference? Free memory makes a huge difference in lag, however.
On latest MIUI and i have ~200 MBs of free memory!
Sent from my I897 using xda premium
Surely not that much... M on miui too n the lowest I get is 80,otherwise I am up there at 130ish... But then I have a crapload of services in the background. But yes, I do get 200 when I clear memory.

With everything stock, the RAM is 130MB or even less. In normal use, the RAM management of the stock ROMs is very bad. I get down to 50-70MB before it starts killing apps which results to lag.
The solution is simple but it involves rooting and/or installing custom ROMs. With the stock ROM just remove apps you don't need (there is a full list of the apps in a dedicated thread here). Or install a custom ROM (best for RAM management is CM7 but you will lose most of the 3D functionality).

I don't think you can download RAM.. I know you can add RAM cards on computers and laptops but they have certain limitations(plus, they are hardware which you have to buy and apply correctly).. and on an android phone I'm not sure.. so if you could provide more details it would be great.

You can't increase RAM without the hardware (again, as far as i know). the only thing you can do is to use less RAM, thus making the device faster and more effective. try freezing the apps that you are not using with titanium back-up. a lot of apps work on background and you don't even need them. by freezing them, you prevent them from auto-starting. you can unfreeze them to make them work again. (you need to be rooted for this)

And then we get into the old falacy that "Free RAM is good". This is simply NOT true on Android. If you start running too short on free RAM then the Android system starts to kill applications to free up more RAM, but RAM is there to be used.

Useless? Not necessarily, as long as you know what you are doing and are 100% certain about the apps you are freezing. However, I have never seen any real benefit in doing so. The Android built-in task manager normally does a failry good job of managing the memory without any real intervention.

Manually killing them is something I do as well. I just don't buy into the task-killer type apps.
Sewrizer said:
I was suggesting freezing and killing unused apps on background because on phones with low RAM (his gio has less than 512 MB of ram) system is laggy, mostly because of pre-installed software which users don't use. He said he has just rooted his phone, therefore he can't have uninstalled the network carrier apps/social networks apps, which may be running on background. And in my experience as an android user, if anything is laggy or stops working, i restart the phone. And after restarting it always works smoother.
About the android built-in task manager, it does indeed do a good job, but on 2.x android versions is a little harder to find and use. thanks for replies

Freezing / killing the apps as root can be useful, but as I said you need to be certain what apps you are freezing and why. How many times have you read on XDA from someone who has frozen a load of the 'Background' apps, and then finds their device won't even boot up and they have to do a full flash to recover, often losing a load of data as well?

Note Slowing down

So I Have been spending a lot of time and effort with my GS3, tweaking the kernal and rom for battery performance and it seems to be working well, now I need to address my Note. Its gotten really slow and feels laggy. My memory used by running apps is less then half. I have greenify freezing a bunch of stuff i dont really need. Im rooted on stock for Rom, with stock Kernel. I was eyeballing some Roms but really dont want to lose any TW functionality, but was hoping to hold off on that until some 2014 Roms popped up. I run Apex as a launcher right now.
Has anyone noticed speed differences with Custom TW Roms or Kernels? or have a good CPU monitor app, they all look pretty, meh, on the play store (i really wish you could see number of dl's and raters from the list view on the play store)...
Up for any suggestions....
Your problem likely has nothing to do with "available RAM" or "processes".

I'm sorry, but both of those apps are essentially useless. Task killers are completely unnecessary with the version of Android we're using, and "Seeder" type apps have been shown to have no benefit (the entropy pool is refreshed a different way in post 3.0 kernel versions).
I'm still waiting for the OP to tell me how much free space is left on his internal flash; that measurement has actual deterministic correlation to lag.

I'm aware that seeder does not work as well for Ics/Jb, compared to 2.x. On my Razr, seeder has more obvious effects on 4.0, 4.1 compared to 4.2 and 4.3. Perhaps I have a crapload of apps/games on my phone/tablet so the effects are more obvious.
Boths apps are free and are reversible so no harm trying.

Might as well be- its page says it "fine tunes android systems inner memory manager to keep your device fast over time", so it modifies the various low-memory-killer limits so Android does the killing, but the idea is the same. People have to get out of the mindset that "bloat" means anything, need to remember that unused memory is wasted memory and that the system has a better idea of how to manage the apps you've chosen.

You have a 32GB unit, right? If not you're looking at your SD-Card, and I need to know the used/free percentages on your /data (or /sdcard, close enough) partition. But if you do have a 32GB device, that's actually quite empty, which is a good thing. If you're rooted, have you tried running an "fstrim" app on the device like this app?
On RAM, from Application Manager I'm showing [930 MB] used 863 MB free ... this I'm sure is the problem.

No, not at all- in fact, you're underusing most of your memory.

From where? When do these occur?

Sorry, that didnt read right, i see i have plenty of open mem, i ment that i suspect the lag is comeing from some sort of storage/memory problem. An unseen one per say.

When i install an app. thats when i get it. I couldnt remember at first.. was thinking its random, but it seems to pop up when i install and app. I cant tell if its only play store or sideloaded as well, dont do enough of the latter.
Ill install Fstrim, and see if it helps some.
thanks for taking the time to do this.

OK, something isn't right here. Can you do me a favor? Run "adb shell df" and send me that?

Yup, it tweaks Android internal memory killer. I won't recommend this if it didn't work for me.
Changing it to moderate preset is pretty safe.
Thanks, I'll send that probably Monday. Thanks again

We have two note 10.1 tablets(wifi only). One is 16 gb the other is 32 gb... On the 16 there is about 5.6 gb free. When installing some apps from google play we get the same message . and it says 1.48 free.. I think this is a Bug with the new play store. The message will NOT Come up when side loading apps is what i have noticed.Unless it prevents you from installing the apps i would not worry about that message.
Wait for 4.3 and the TRIM support.

For you folks seeing "Not enough free space" issues, how are you determining your "Free Flash" numbers?

Yes. The stock kernel has it, see that "discard" option:
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /data ext4 noatime,nosuid,nodev,discard,noauto_da_alloc,journal_async_commit,errors=panic wait,check,encryptable=footer
... and my kernels have that, plus at boot time I run "fstrim" on every partition:
Code:
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /data
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /cache
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /system
4.3 runs that last part more often, but technically if the system is running the "discard" option on the filesystems, at least once at boot should really be enough.

hmm. I dont have a PC to connect to, and am having an hard time finding something i can run from my Note. any suggestions on how to run ADB Shell DF locally?
i use system tuner pro. esp if you are rooted. gives a great overall outlook on what is going on with the system.
i personally haven't tried any custom rom's yet. and i can tell also my Note starting to feel laggy.
really hoping a 4.4 custom rom comes along. I heard they added IR blaster support in 4.4 and would really love that to be available. really the only functionality holding me back from custom roms atm.
