Knowing samsung ... my guess is they will never build a release with it. On to the next piece of hardware.
I hope they prove me wrong.
Regardless if Samsung releases a 3.0 ROM for us or not, it will be ported.
I want Froyo when it comes available, because I already know it rocks.
As for Gingerbread, nobody knows if it is a turd or not, so I am not about to get all worked up about am OS that won't be available for my device until late next year, if ever...
However... it would be nice to know there will be long-term support and development for this device. It is quite an expensive piece of equipment to hit end-of-life a year later.

That way I'm saving a virgin family line, to get the next best thing, cheap

I got mine for $150... but with the 2 year contract.
However, since AT&T is the only provider that has good coverage at my house, i am locked into them regardless of whether I have a contract or not.
2 year extension only means I have to wait 18 months to get the latest-greatest phone... I'm not complaining.
I could've gotten the Captivate for free, or the Iphone 4 for $199 still keeping my unlimited plan.
But I just bought the Captivate $350, still have my plan. Just waiting for the latest thing lol

I had 3 choices
1) Get captivate for free, keep my plan, put 2 year contract on a family line.
2) Get iphone 4, do "cross-upgrade" (put contract on a family line) register micro-sim/imei to me, and keep my plan.
3) Buy either phone off contract
I went with 3, but not "official", I saw some guy on craigslist selling it new in box $350, so I bought it, took my sim out of old Motorola Backflip (CRAP OUT-DATED DEVICE) and placed it in my Captivate.
So I don't know if the phone is "technically" covered by att, but I registered it with samsung.
You didn't buy it from AT&T so they will not cover anything. Not even support if they didn't want to. The latter is not likely as I have purchased 2nd hand devices and they have not refused to provide technical support.

Talk to AT&T if you bought the device from them.
I got my Captivate via LetsTalk.com and I was given a checkbox that says "I WANT TO KEEP MY 30$ UNLIMITED PLAN"
If you're still fresh into your new contract you should be able to tell them to switch it to your good ol' unlimited data plan and don't let them tell you the otherwise. Be persistent.

You know, I've been worried that this may be a general problem for all smart phones.
There is little, actually negative, incentive for manufactures to upgrade the OS of any phone. They don't charge for the upgrades and new phones are "relatively" cheap.
Additionally, the players in question tend to be hardware manufactures not software manufactures.
I think the deck is stack against those of us that want to see OS upgrades on smart phones.
Just my 2 cents worth, YMMV.

Yep, I'm going to agree here. A wireless company would need to invest lots of money for a team to test and prepare a new OS after it's received from the manufacturer to be sent out to a device. Or they could just spend that money on checking a new incoming phone which would already be prepped for the new OS.
In today's world they know a majority of us are going to be drooling over the next big thing in a year. Why give you something for free when they can get you to buy it?
The only phone to really break this mold is the iPhone. Only because it's one piece of hardware controlled by the manufacturer. They only have to worry about the OS working with their own hardware. Where Gingerbread will need to be adapted to every manufacturer that wants to use it.
If it looks amazing I'll be praying for Samsung and AT&T to step up to the plate for their customers; but I won't be checking BGR expecting anything.

I keep hearing that google said late Q4-early Q1.
The way I see it, samsung, htc, moto, nobody cares if you get a higher os. They will make an update due to calender reasons like the 2.1 to 2.2 to get you to buy a device with an old os.
But if the devs can put 2.2 on a g1, which google said couldn't happen, doesn't really matter what hardware we have. It's up to all of us to support the devs to make anything happen.

Hey guys, quick question. I'm not that familiar with ROM development, so I turn to you. I highly doubt that we can count on sammy to develop gingerbread for us, so do we think that it will even be possible to port it? Reading design gears thread, it seems that he can't quite get true AOSP running on the captivate because of how heavily samsung has modified the OS, does this mean that we will never see sweet 3.0? If that's the case, than it might be time to sell and buy a nexus one...

The messed up thing is they shouldn't be 'thinking' about it. It should be a definite. This is supposed to be the best hardware ever released on a phone so there's no reason why it shouldn't be available. If its not, although i love the galaxy s, i will never buy another Samsung product in my life

That wasn't my experience with the HTC Touch HD which at the time was supposed to be the best of the best in hardware.
So, AndroidAndMe.com posted a rumor about Samsung is going to have a new Google-Experience phone running on new hardware (Tegra 2 based) and Gingerbread ready by the end of 2010.
There goes your dream any Galaxy S phones getting Generbread ever.
Why would you say that? Samsung released the Galaxy S to 4 carriers, and are DIRECTLY competing with Apple with hardware aimed at the iPad and even the iPod Touch! Why anyone would think Samsung would just drop a top of the line smartphone on us and hang us out to dry is very stupid, and not very thought out.
Samsung, if possible, WILL "think" about Gingerbread. And by "think" they don't mean mull it over some peanuts and beer, they mean QA, hardware analysis, software development. They didn't come along to latch a customer on for a year, they came on to steal the market from Apple, and the latest Beta Froyo should let you all know they're doing alot more than thinking about it.

Because I have owned 5 Samsung Smartphones and couple DVD players as well as their top of line Blu Ray players. And they did exactly like I said to every single product I purchased.
Samsung's market strategy is to blanket market with latest and greatest hardware every 6 months or so. Everything they released so far always have something unfinished or not working. By the time they fix all the issues, the existing product is discontinued and a new generation of the product is already on the market. And the cycle continues.
Problem with phones are the 2 year contract. If samsung just leaves everyone who bought a galaxy s phone out to dry, so much for potential sales for our next phone.
Anyways, since the galaxy tab will (?) receive gingerbread, i'm hopefull it will be on our phones, through samsung or xda.

i dont understand what this has to so with att? i keep on seeing the blame put on att but the vibrant doesnt have anything that the captivate doesn't have 'cept for hsupa. if the vibrant had froyo and plans for ginger bread then yeah i could see att getting thrown in but att doesnt decide the fate of the whole galaxy s line. froyo is coming, gingerbread might be or might not be, i have a fealing that froyo will be realesed on the whole galaxy s usa line about the same time, and they may be holding back on the gsm phones untill it is ready for the cdma phones which will take longer as there are more differences in hardware for the epic and fascinate. i have an aquaintance at samsung who is a senior engineer for the cdma phones. he cant give me details but in general he said they are working around the clock on the froyo update and there shouldn't be an unusually long wait. for what ever that's worth. i dont know about gingerbread but i can only hope.

With the Nexus S already sporting it and google actually programming for a Galaxy phone, the chances of Gingerbread are very good.
Google is already optimizing it for the hummingbird as we speak, it'll be easier for Samsung to port it to their other devices.
Before it was easy to port to the EVO and everything else just because the nexus one had very similar CPUs to all of them.

lol, agreed. Don't know why so much talk about "Gingerbread"
We don't even have "Froyo" yet, only the leaked version. And even then, when the official release does come out, I won't be upgrading. Too bloated when AT&T get's their hands on it. I'll stick with the customs.
Plus I think most of the people in here that has any of the Galaxy S phones will most likely part ways when "Gingerbread" is out. I know I will (and I don't think our Galaxy S phones will get it either).
I also believe there is no "GPS fix" for our phones in the future either and there won't be one.

That's the problem, Samsung figured if it put in all the most powerful toys in a single package and didn't give a crap about how it was put together or how the software is to make it actually work, it'd still sell on specs alone.
And they were right.
So they now have absolutely no incentive to make a more quality phone in the future. They're just lucking out that Google is choosing them to be the next Nexus (if rumors/leaks are true, of course).

Here is the problem samsung doesn't seem to get. We buy their phones on a two year contract. They get paid monthly or whatever from AT&T for us signing up for two years. Who in the $&$& wants to buy their phone when you don't even get a full six months of support from samsung. I have to pay AT&T for two years to buy this phone. I know apple gets paid monthly from AT&T as part of their subsidation process. I bet samsung does too. They get paid for nothing. What a rip.

Apple may have a special deal but other Phone makers do not. Samsung, Moto, HTC - they sell through many channels, not just AT&T - and they sell off contract.
The way it works for hardware:
AT&T buys phones from Samsung... probably about $300 per phone. They sell them subsidized for $200 or maybe $0.99 or they sell it unsubsidized for $499. Samsung makes their profit on the phone sale when they wholesale them to AT&T.
Updates are created by Samsung on behalf of the carrier. If AT&T doesn't want to bother with an update, then the manufacturer doesn't create it. Again, this goes for Samsung, Moto, HTC, etc. It has been this way for WinMo and Android. Nothing new here.
Believe it or not, Apple also sells the phones for fixed price to AT&T. They may make money on some monthly cut, but that is a separate deal. But don't compare Apple, they have a deal different from every other phone maker out there.
Here @ Engadget
So many choice phrases to say right now.
****ing mind boggling.
As a Vibrant owner (since I haven't sold mine yet) I'm kind of pissed at this. It's like they're throwing salt in the wound. Samsung throws 2.2 on that phone before the one that's currently out, gives it a FFC which it was supposed to have from the get go (the hole for it is even there on the motherboard), and makes it HSPA+ capable? Will somebody please tell them that nobody's ever going to support them again since their apparent solution to the no update problem is to sell you a slightly updated version of the exact same phone instead of bringing the existing one with the same basic hardware up to the now out of date OS that it should have had 6 months ago.
in this case.. the Nexus S must of been the sequel to the Vibrant 4G *cough* Android 2.3 *cough*
Vibrant (2.1) -> Vibrant 4G (2.2) -> Nexus S (2.3 - forever)
Calm down folks. There's no release date and it likely won't be until at least next month. The i9000 will be almost a one year old phone by then, and the Vibrant was released last August, which makes it a 6 month old phone.
I'm not going to fault T-Mobile for releasing a better phone 6 months later; that's become a long time in terms of hardware development. I've resigned myself to a new phone every 6 months for as long as I feel compelled to have the "latest, greatest" device.
The picture looks like the same form factor as the current Vibrant; so if all the rest of the stuff is the same, that tells us that our NS, or even our Vibrants, are still pretty much top of the line devices.
Since this looks to be the same build as the current Vibrant, I wonder if it will have the same creaks and groans.
Since they've changed the radio chip (to support 21Mbs) I also wonder if it will still have the AT&T 1900Mhz 3G band support like the current Vibrant.

I agree, the Vibrant being replaced in less than 6 months with a better version once most people have already signed 2 year contracts is a tough pill to swallow for Vibrant owners.
It'd be like if Samsung came out with a "Nexus S Plus" in a couple of months that was more future proofed with HSPA+, SD card slot, HDMI output, etc... Nexus S owners would be pretty pissed and wouldn't want to be told to "calm down" either

Galaxy S2 will be revealed in February: Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/samsung-mobile-boss-confirms-galaxy-s-successor-galaxy-tab-road/
Considering these phones will likely get enough developer support to see ports of any and all new iterations of Android released from Google (which usually end up being better and more feature-rich than stock anyway); considering you can replace Touchwiz (quite easily even without rooting); considering bloatware doesn't *really* do any harm; and considering Google only releases two major updates a year to the current Nexus phone, it makes me reconsider my position and the worth of the Nexus line.
Everyone will have different preferences, of course, but a lot of me wishes Google would directly challenge Apple with a "Google Experience" phone that isn't meant only to appease developers. In other words, a phone that does compete hardware wise, that does have a more uniformed OS experience that would cater to average-users, while retaining the customizable options and variety that sets the Android experience apart from iOS. That wouldn't sound bad at all.
Perhaps I just got the wrong phone, or perhaps I'm finding out Android isn't for me. Unfortunately, i don't agree with Apple's "the average user is an idiot" philosophy either. For what it's worth, I'm just thinking out loud.

please check your facts. we are talking about vibrant. not the i9000. the US version of the i9000 got dumped and was released much later than the Euro version. no front facing camera and different button lay out.
the vibrant is not even 6 months old as far as i know. " i am not very sure on this one. so maybe someone will check my facts on this lol "

Please check your facts before correcting people.
The Vibrant's official release date was supposed to be July 21, 2010, but looks like it came out a week early though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S#In_the_United_States
Let's see, August, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan...that's 6 months right there, and by the time this new Vibrant Plus comes out (next month, maybe later) it will be 7-8 months or more. There's no announced release date yet that I've seen.
Also, I know we're talking about the T-Mo Vibrant, but it's only a slight variant of the original i9000. I have owned both, and even disassembled both. They both use the same display, touchscreen, same cpu, same gpu, same just about everything internally except the radio and the capacitive buttons. You can even put the i9000 FFC into a Vibrant by just removing some paint, and I've place the Vibrant's speaker assembly into an i9000.
My point was that the basic technology of the ENTIRE Galaxy S line of phones is almost a year old now. The i9000 was demo'd in April 2010, and available for purchase in June 2010. In the phone world, 9-12 months is a very long time...they need to provide something new and exciting to sell more phones, and a 21Mbs radio probably fits that bill.

Ah, the joys of the Apple system

But that's the reality of COMPETITION. Samsung Mobile exists to sell phones. They have to constantly come up with something that will tempt new buyers. Welcome to world of technology, and economics 101...there will always, make that ALWAYS be a better gadget out in just a few months.
Apple's in a class by itself...not that it's better than the others, but they have a very loyal and large audience that will only buy iPhones. They can get away with a longer product cycle because of that. I'm not sure how long that will last, though.
And if you hadn't noticed, there are probably a whole lot of angry iPhone 4 users who signed a 2-year contract for an AT&T iPhone 4 last July that are now pissing and moaning that it's not fair that they can get an iPhone 4 on Verizon now. That's just the way it is with cell deals and subsidies...if you don't like it, don't buy a phone under contract. I've paid cash and non-subsidized every phone I've bought in the last 18 months, including my iPhone 4.
Hey guys come on it's a "customer favourite"
If you hate Samsung for making the Vibrant Plus in the first place, you're REALLY going to hate them after reading this: http://androidspin.com/2011/01/12/b...samsung-is-holding-the-android-world-hostage/
Allegedly they have Froyo ready to go for the Vibrant, but won't let T-Mo push it OTA for fear of hurting sales of the Vibrant Plus.
Why didn't the nexus s have the hspa+ and I feel like everyone that got the vibrant just got screwed.

Yeah I agree. It reminds me of when the Nexus One came out and set a standard for smartphones and looked really classy which caused alot of people to become loyal followers.
I wonder how long Apples loyalty will last if they don't set a new standard like they did with the iPhone 4 and you have a bunch of crazy Android phones (Atrix, Bionic, Optimus, etc) breathing down their neck?

There is no way that removing touchwiz is easy, and when i left the Captivate, (about a month ago now) there still wasn't a rom that had it 100% removed.

Not to be overly cynical, but I think this might be the reason LG hasn't outright said they will upgrade our phone to ICS. I fail to see how this new one would be such a cut above ours other than it will be sporting ICS. And yes, I know that LG has stated they will upgrade the O2X and they are basically the same phone so let's stay off of that merry-go-round.

It will be hilarious if the next phone to that is G8x. G8 in Chinese sounds the same as the male part. Some believe it the reason why Canon skipped PowerShot G8 and directly to G9.

It'll be called the Optimus 3x, and the T-mobile version will be the G3x, because of the Tegra 3.

Quad core processing, will have at least a gig of RAM, so twice as much RAM, 100% faster processing times. Not to mention a 4.7 inch screen, real 720p HD screen and 21 mbps radio instead of 14.4.

That makes way more sense than G4x.
However, I am an LG owner scorned. It's either iPhone or Nexus device for me.

This is a very tempting phone. But it's just hard to put all your cards in LG and nVidia again.
I will buy g4x, the screen on g2x look way better than Samsung and HTC phones, hopefully g4x will have nice and easy to clean screen.
If only it didn't say lg on it. Smh

With Samsung dominating the Android phone market, it would be wise for LG to pull a Hyundai. Meaning, institute a 3 year update Guarantee on all phones going forward. Basically, within 3 months of a major release of Android (Think Eclair->Froyo->Gingerbread) you are Guaranteed the update, or you get a full refund on the price of the phone(What you paid for the phone when you bought it, granted you actually have to contact LG before getting the refund) That way you know that when you buy an LG phone you are assured you will have an updated phone. Sounds crazy? People said a 10 year warrantee was crazy, but Hyundai is doing pretty damn awesome right now. And 3 years worth of updates isn't asking for a heck of a lot.
Imagine the impact this would have on the industry? If successful, this would force HTC, Samsung, Motorola and other manufactures to get their stuff together and support phones instead of slight upgrades throughout the year (Think Droid3->Droid4 and Atrix->Atrix2, as well as the Myriad of phones related to the original EVO 4G).
It'll take a true leader to show this industry changing innovation, and someone who isn't a foolish corporate pig to pull it off. I just don't know if any corporation that makes our beloved phones have the courage or the scruples to actually try this.
Imagine, even as a sheeple consumer, seeing on a phone 3 year update guarantee on a big sticker on the box. Most would wonder what makes that special, and on the back can be a section explaining how most phones are forgotten a couple months after release, but if you get an LG phone, you are guarenteed your money back, if your phone isn't updated to the newest OS within three months of release. Then it could go on about how the updates help security and stability with the phone, as well as better support for future apps.
Could turn LG's business around. But what do I know? I just put out good ideas while the execs at LG release a highly anticipated phone only to have it fall on its face and walk away from it pretending it never happened, leaving it's customers high and dry...they clearly know what they are doing. Put me in charge of LG and I promise that they will be the smartphone leader in 2 years (any LG people listening ;P )
That's not wise at all…. LG will never ever guarantee that, considering android is developed by a different company. Who knows if future iterations of android will require significantly more power. Google's own Nexus One isn't even being updated to ICS, and that was only 2 years ago. Also LG will never be able to sell any low or mid range phones, considering they don't have top of the line hardware to begin with.
Then if LG fail to deliver their promise based on the first point, they have to essentially buy back 2-3 year old hardware they had already sold at their original price.
That idea is ludicrous and there is a reason it hasn't been implemented.

You, sir, are a genius.
/sarcasm
Yeah, basically same thing that was said about Hyundai, thanks for proving my point! "How can you support a car for 10 Years?!?!" And honestly, ICS really should've been release for the Nexus One. Low end phones going forward will be at about the level of the G2x and the original Transformer (Look up ZTE Tegra2 phone, it's considered a mid-level 2012 phone). Besides, this could be offered only to premium handsets.
Also, you assume that 100% of the people will actually take advantage of the warranty. Reality is about 12.5% actually use the warranty on products. I actually learned 30% in marketing, and in my 10 years in corporate business, it's actually more like 12.5%. Better marketing, vs at most 30% of people taking advantage of it (unrealistic)
The idea isn't ludicrous, it just saddens me that their are such self-limited minds out there.
