Some Questions and sorry if they have been asked before
1) Do I need to root my phone before flashing the new fw
2) If I need to go back to the 02 branded firmware 2.1 is this possible does anyone have a link to the ROM
3) Once I have flashed to a generic 2.3.3 ROM will seus still work for future updates?
1. you need to root your phone before you can flash anything
2. more specific please. are you talking about going back to your stock rom? if so, there are two ways:
make a nand backup before you flash anything. you can always restore this backup
although its recommended that you make a backup, if you dont feel like one or forget to, you can always flash the kdz file of your stock rom using kdz updater (which can potentially brick your phone if you are not careful)
3. you will no longer receive ota updates from your manufacturer (of course, you will find that xda will always be one step ahead of your manufacturer when it comes to releasing a newer android version)

Ok so..............
1)Downloaded the latest Flash Tool last night and backed up my apps contacts and settings.
2)Downloaded the latest generic android 2.3.3 firmware for the uk. From the thread on here.
3)In answer to my own question (hadn't spotted the reply) I didn't have to root first, simply flashed firmware however took two attempts as first time didn't choose option to wipe user settings and phone stuck at SE logo.
4) Will be getting nand backup as prep work with backing up took wayyyyyy to long. It would of been usefull as would have given me the kdz of the old firmware - never mind I'll have to find it elsewhere to keep on hand incase phone needs to go back to 02
5) New version is much better it would seem, phone is quicker and seems to respond better on the touch side - maybe just due to fresh install. All apps and settings back phone up and running as before inside 10mins...except home screen customisation - that's gonna take some playing with! I couldn't get ota updates from 02 anyway they didn't use them - no loss.
6)Will the sony software still pick up updates or am I forever locked into flashing?
7)How do I get the app drawer to scroll up and down like before as opposed to sideways?
Hello,
I have bought a North American (Canadian, to be exact) Galaxy Gio (S5660M, with an additional "M" from the European model).
There are lots of tutorials about S5660 rooting and unlocking, but none for S5660M. There has been some reports that flashing S5660 firmware on S5660M to root and unlock made their phones unusable (randomly changing screen brightness, etc).
I tried searching on google and XDA, but could not find any relating to S5660M.
Is it too early to see any rooting/unlocking on S5660M?
Thank you very much!
Hello,
After some reading on here to compare unlock methods, I decided to take the leap into the unknown. I used the one published in this thread. (EDIT: Check out this one instead, perfectly safe.) (It turns out that the Gravity Smart, Galaxy Q, 551, 550, Mini, Ace, Fit, and Gio are siblings in a few respects. They all share Qualcomm 7x27 family SoCs.)
One deviation from the above linked thread is that SuperOneClick does not work on the 2.3.4 MUGK3 firmware. Updated versions of SuperOneClick do work with the firmware. Worst case scenario the program won't finish gracefully, but you'll have a root shell and you can work from there.
I've uploaded my modified superuser zip that'll work with the 5660M. Install through recovery mode. Removed - the superuser files within were long obsolete. Get the current ones through proper channels.
I wouldn't risk flashing the ROMs posted here until we can get a complete backup ROM, either from samfirmware.com (they don't have one yet) or through efforts here. I'll be starting another thread here for that purpose. Backup made a long time ago and SamMobile has had an official Odin image for some time as well.
There's been some issues reported with the 5660M, ranging from odd screen brightness behavior to bricking. (Many ROMs initially posted for the 5660, left "as is" also flash both the kernel and radio: not good.)
Goodbye,
Darkshado
Thank you for the reply! I have successfully rooted & unlocked using the modified zip. I am not sure if it was your's (I have done it prior to looking at your reply... ), but it worked!
thank you!

could you tell me how I could unlock my phone too.
New tonight
Just picked up a GIO here tonight.
BTW Future Shop in Canada has these on for $80 right now.
I think this is a great deal, for a very responsive 2.3 android phone.
OK,
So S5660m - is the version in canada it would seem.. I think there are going to be quite a lot of owners because of the pricing.
We should use this thread or another to setup a difinitive list of what works.
1. How to root the phone.
2. Unlocks that work - I have heard some methods brick Ms very easy. What is the best unlock method specific to the M
3. What ROMs can we use? do we need to have our own set of modified roms because of the modem portion?
4. Overclocking.. I have heard these can clock up to 1100 and run awsome!!
This is my wish list.
James

The bml5 method is safe. I noticed I had left a link to the older and unsafe stl5 method in my post above and removed it.
And keep your unlock code accessible somewhere on the phone. This phone is known to relock itself to Bell in some specific scenarios.

Yes, and no. If you only flash system.rfs, and maybe boot.img, it should work based on what others have reported.
I've cooked up a ROM for the 5660M that's called ArpegGioMod if you want to have a look.
Another point to consider if you want to run your phone in French: the Eurasian ROMs may or may not have that locale, and will likely have an AZERTY keyboard instead of a QWERTY one.
Do not flash radio (AMSS) or the other bootloaders from the Euro 5660. The former will make you lose all cellphone connection, the latter is unnecessary and increases your chances of bricking.

Where'd you get that? The only kernel mods I've seen so far for any Gio are all ramdisk modifications that left the stock kernel untouched.
Just to clairify darkshadow, by "bml5 method" you mean this ?
0) brand new locked GT-S5660M phone frome the store
1A) root the device using this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16962635&postcount=2
simplest method :
1.1 To begin, download the zip file from the link above and copy it to the root of your SD card.
1.2 Power the phone off.
1.3 Boot into recovery mode by holding the middle button and pressing the power button.
1.4 Once in recovery mode, select update from sdcard and choose the update.zip that you copied to your SD card.
1.5 Let the file flash and once done, reboot your phone.
OR
1B Follow EDIT2, for temp rooting on same URL below
2. Follow exact instructions as per here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17148825&postcount=334
(with the slight modification for HEX code to search specified here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17311381&postcount=358 )
Question: Does it matter if there is a SIM card in the phone when following these instructions ?
Any thoughts about "Network Lock Control Key" ?? ( ... would appear that this shows up as a separate issue for some users some time after unlocking see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992564 )
THANK YOU so much for confirming I got this right....I just want to make sure I am not missing anything, and these instructions are really safe as far as you know before attempting anything.

so i'm pretty new here... i have a gio n my usb port is messed up.. i wiped tha phone the other day n the network lock came back on.. so seeing that i can't use any usb what should i do?
thanks in advance
IMEI: Mod Edit: IMEI # Removed...not a great idea to post them on a public forum
Let me start with things you shouldn't do:
-Resurrect two year old, stale, threads.
-Post your IMEI for everyone to see.
Exactly *how* is your USB port messed up? Just not talking to the computer or not working at all?
Are you rooted? If not, get that sorted out by using one of the exploits that worked on Gingerbread. You'll have to do it manually, no SuperOneClick for you. (Although the binaries included might come in handy.)
It is possible to do the commands to get bml5 via a terminal emulator app, and then transfer that file over wi-fi. (Samba, WebDAV, FTP, Dropbox, etc...)
I'm not sure anymore if this is possible in GB, look into using ADB over wi-fi instead of USB. I've sold my Gio months ago, and all of my current devices run 4.1+.
I tried to ask the question before but had no luck getting the answer.
I have rooted tmobile one s, version 1.53 (every one else seems to have 1.78).
I need to update my software.
I downloaded ota update but installation failed.
I have removed couple originals mobile software.
No new rom is installed.
I am sure the question was asked before but I do not seem to find it.
I appreciate if someone post a link or have some guidance on this as to what steps are needed.

The OTA update would bring you to version 1.84, the other versions are not for TMOUS. It would seem to help if you gave more details as to how the OTA failed like error messages and such, as well as what "couple originals mobile software" it was you removed, was that some swinging app?
Thank you, here is more info to clarify the question:

Ok. Easy fix. Download the t mobile nandroid and install the zip in cwm recovery and you'll be on 1.84 . It's in dev section. Make sure you get the t mobile one.

Have never had any issues myself but read that OTAs and possibly RUU (?) sometimes require all original apps to be present. You could try to find that TwitterWidget .apk somehow like in /system/app that nandroid Mike talked about, copy it to your SDcard and install it then try the OTA again. Or just install the whole Nandroid in CWM, make sure you backup your stuff first if you mess it up

you dont unzip any update file, you have a few way to fix this:
1: Restore the apps that the OTA update is complaining about. To do this you download the Nandroid file Mike linked to and use winzip, 7zip or whatever to open it in Windows and find the twitterwidget file in it. Then you copy it to your phones SDCard and click it on your phone. You might have to check the setting to allow apps from other sources than the Play Store in phone settings. Hopefully this works, if not you have to bootloader unlock your phone and root it. There are good guides stickied around here.
2: Unlock your bootloader so you can install CWM recovery, then download the Nandroid file to your SDCard, boot into CWM recovery, and restore the Nandroid. A Nandroid is a complete backup of someones phone software and settings. This might wipe all your data.
3: Easiest way might be to run a RUU for T-Mobile USA with version 1.84. This might wipe all your data. A RUU is a program you run in Windows with your phone connected via USB, it'll factory reset your phone with the version of software in the specific RUU file, you can find a TMOUS one in development section, the thread is called Ville/VilleC2 shipped ROMs.
4: Send it in to TMOUS and they'll probably run a RUU for you.
Thank you frdd:
1: I tried to do number one, but the unzipped files still does not have a breakdown for the specific twitterwidget, somehow it will have to be within a system file that has different name. My phone is unlocked and rooted.
2- eventhough my phone is unlocked, i still can not install cwm, i guess it has something to do with previous postings where others have a problem entering the recovery on htc one s
4- I will do as last resort.
3- I am trying to do now, Do I have to relock the bootloader? is there a step by step guide on how to run RUU.
Thank you again.
Hello, just registered for an account here after trying to fix my problem from 2-3 days worth of "google-ing" related articles and threads of my current problem. Although there has been too many boot loop complications to count, I couldn't seem to stumble upon a scenario in which the user's circumstances were related to my own specifications (I am aware of how important it is to review and research before creating a new thread).
I will proceed to list in, chronological order, the recent alterations my phone has undergone within the last couple of days...
1. Giving the "bootloader" the Boot
I've had my At&t One X for about five to six months and have gotten pretty comfortable with the Android platform, and decided to research in the journey that any brave "pioneer of technology" would partake in, gaining super user-access through rooting! Of course, at the time, I knew as little about the topic that I could have safely assumed that "to root" a phone had to have involved planting your device in soil, adding water, and providing ample sunlight.. SO I began to research and learned quickly that one would need to "unlock the boot loader" on their device before they could proceed to rooting. I figured that I had a green-thumb when it came to following instructions and carried on to "HTCdev's" website to unlock my phone. I installed Sync, updated my Java, and downloaded Android SDK.zip onto my (Windows PC). In the end, I learned both: how to use fastboot in my pc's command prompt, and that my phone was apparently incompatible to be unlocked. At the end i received an error message "Error Code: 160 Error Reason: MID Not Allowed".
2. Root of my Problems
Although I had failed to unlock my phone's boot loader, I was still determined to root my phone and through more research I found I could still "root" my phone, but I would have less options when it comes to flashing roms and some other jive. Since I was only needing root to be able to run "Sixaxis" (to sync a PS3 controller as an IME for my phone) at the time, I was okay with that.
I found a simple root website (Can't upload link due to my "ten-posts-cherry" not being popped yet, but the link was named "How to ROOT HTC AT&T One X with one-click method" in Google) and followed the steps carefully. I downloaded "root-one-x.zip", extracted files, and double-clicked on the batch file. My phone restarted a couple times and everything seemed to run smoothly after rooting.
3. Creative Control Causes Chaos
After being rooted for a week or two, I started to delve into the tweaking possibilities my phone could endure now, such as the ability to change fonts (when I should've been taking advantage of apps like Titanium Backup). I searched the play store for a while and came across an app called "Custom Android Font Switcher" (by Bentotbox), which claimed compatible with my device and boasted the simplicity of switching to hundreds of new fonts for your device. (Seemed pretty neat!) It did note the requirement of "root with busybox?" but I continued to download and install. I launched the app, browsed some obnoxious fonts, settled on a more simplistic variance of my original, and loaded the new font. When finished loading I noticed the new font had correctly taken effect on most parts of my phone, with the latter erroneously displaying in Chinese-like characters. (wasn't sure if it was Japanese or Korean, but in my opinion they all look the same only joking..) Since I am not talented in reading any other language thoroughly enough, I went back into the app to find a way to revert back to the original font, yet found no way to do so. My next decision was to un-install the app hoping that might bring my original font back, and when it didn't I decided a Restart would do the trick! Well now it seems my phone has learned a new trick indeed! Being able to continuously "loop" the loading screen. (Boots to welcome screen, then At&t screen, then flips over to a screen that just shows "ONEx" and stays there until I either: power-down the phone to start the process again OR smash with a hammer)
4. Trial and Error to no Prevail and Much Error
My phone has been in a bootloop since about 2-3 days ago, and like I mentioned, I have searched many forums and threads for solutions (Which I've done all throughout my technological life and usually had no problem finding out how to do something, whether it would be changing a radiator to performing open-heart surgery on a monkey). This is actually the first time I've posted on any forum for help since I usually find a way to fix issues myself from other user's parallel problems.
So far, I have tried the following with no resolution to my phone's boot revolution:
- Enter "Recovery" mode by holding volume-down while powering on the phone.
- Choosing the "Clear Storage" in the phone's hboot menu.
- Choosing the "Factory Reset" in the phone's hboot menu
- (I've read many places to clear cache and dalvic cache?, but cannot seem to find these options)
- (I've read that one can re-flash? CWM recovery to fix loop, but I couldn't do so because it apparently Requires an Unlocked Bootloader)
- Been able to stop the loop by choosing the "Power-Down" option in the hboot menu (Also enables me to charge phone via wallcharger! Also noticed other people on the internet having troubles finding a way to charge their phone in a boot loop. Maybe I stumbled on to a potential universal solution?)
- When I choose the actual option "Recovery" in the hboot or (recovery mode) the screen goes black and eventual shows a phone icon with a red triangle on the screen and stays there until I re-boot. Is this supposed to be the Recovery page?
Conclusion
I know I've made a pretty long "first-post", but I wanted to make sure I gave all the details that might matter when trying to diagnose my problem and might help others with a problem like mine. So anyways, thank you for reading and I appreciate your help in advanced!

What software version were you on? 2.20 is not rootable, and previous versions (1.73, 1.85) correspond with different root methods.
The AT&T One X needs to be rooted and SuperCID before unlocking the bootloader, so that is why unlocking the bootloader failed.
What you have (red exclamation mark) is the stock recovery.
I'm betting that getting the RUU for your particular firmware version and running it, will get your phone back to working order. RUUs and other resources can be found in my index thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

Are you saying that the website I used to root my device (Believe it was ABD Daemon root) shouldn't have worked since if I was on 2.20 it couldn't have been rooted and if I was on (1.73 OR 1.85) a different website/rooting method than I used would've been necessary to root my device?
Also after rooting I wanted to make sure my device was rooted, and searched how to find out. I downloaded an app Root Checker and it verified I had Super user root access or whatnot.

Which RUU do I need? Do they correspond to the software version I am running? Or is firmware version different? Since my phone is in a bootloop are there other ways to determine which software/firmware version I am using?
Once I have the correct RUU to download, do I just boot the device in fastboot and use command prompt to "zap?" it over?
Thank you redpoint73,

No what I am saying is "what firmware are you on", lol
A questions you never did answer.
And no, 2.20 is not rootable, and I don't think you out of everyone here magically found a 2.20 root solution when nobody else (including very talented and experienced developers) has been able to.

RUU for your current version is the best way. Higher numbers will also work, but never lower numbers (downgrades are not normally allowed, without things like SuperCID). But I only recommend running a higher number RUU, if you know what has been changed, and are okay with those changes. For instance, 2.20 plugs the holes by which root was obtained, and also has a patched hboot that plugs the holes by which kernels and radios could be flashed from recovery. So I believe the 2.20 RUU would have worked, but also would have left you stuck without root.
I asked the firmware versions, hoping that you already knew what it was. You really shouldn't be rooting and modding the phone, without knowing what firmware version you are on.

Would anyone help me please to direct me to a thread or instruction where I can update my rooted device from 2.3.6 to ice. I tried to do it thought wifi but it didn't work. Thanks for your response. I went thought this thread before you provided and I followed the instruction but the installation aborted. So, I though that I was in the wrong thread. I spent two days trying to flash my device but I couldn't. That is way I need some help and guidance!!!
Thanks again,

I need a whole lot more information to help you out.
1) What was the EXACT error you got.
2) Did you actually fxz to 2.3.6, before attempting to apply the blur zip file?
3) Did you try and root or restore anything before trying to apply the blur zip file, including signing into goolge?
4) Did you install ANY CWM bootstrap or the like, before trying to apply the blur zip file?
I would fxz to 2.3.6 and try again to apply the Blur zip file, and this time, please capture the error message with as much detail as possible, so that I know what to tell you to do next. Also next time please post this in my leak #1 thread, instead of a new one, thanks.

Here is an attached screenshot for the error I got. I was in 2.3.5 then I root my device and flash to 2.3.6, so I am using 2.3.6. I reset my device and tried to flash the Blur zip but I couldn't. I am using Atrix 2 Bootstrapper. hope this help! Thanks again for your time.

Yeah you can not just do a factory reset. You HAVE to fxz back to 2.3.6 from scratch, even if you are already on 2.3.6. Go grab the 2.3.6 fxz and flash that with RSD lite, then try again. It is real important that you flash the fxz and the do nothing, not even sign into google, or install ANYTHING, before trying to update with the zip file. I see that your build.prop was the issue in your error, that tells me you did not fxz, and you MUST do that.
Oh and By the way you can get the 2.3.6 FXZ from here:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php
And this is the file you want, if you are on AT&T:
InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml.zip

Thank you so much, if you don't mind, I will update you when I finish doing what you recommended.
Ok, now I did use the RSD lite to go back to the fxz 2.3.6. All the process went will and I got the PASS under the status. When the device started I notice that I am in ICE not 2.3.6!! so do I have to do the next step in this thread ??

No. You are on ICS now the same version as the ota, which by the way is no longer off limits sine we have an ICS fxz, as you just witnessed. You can use the root from thread though, if you want root.

Thank you soooo much for your kind help and your time as well.
Do any of the sr contributors ever read what they post in NOOB sections or procedures
I see many SR responders that I can guess just live and make a living off of modifying and changing android system. Problem is that unless you do things everyday. Many of the abbreviations and shortening of terms is the cause of many of the questions us part time modify-er of phones ask.
But unless you do it everyday. Simple for many but many tasks have to be reviewed and gone over again and re-read. Many modify and then only do it again when they get tired or have a new phone. Many of us have some of the same desires and likes but don't have the time or inclination to do it fulltime or live for programming and Modifying. Were users. We don't like the stock bloats and addons that we get with stock phones.
Simple example is going from 2.3.6 operating version to 4.04. Have a thread [HOW TO] get your AT&T phone onto ICS Leak #1 - Process Updated 11/11/2012.
Simple questions such as ON GB or figuring out if my phone modifying OR I have put Leak 1 or 2 on my phone. or ICS OTA. just figuring out what a leak meant was a task.
With my Atrix2 I went from 2.3.5 to root to 2.3.6 with a modified ROM. So back tracking and knowing if I'm in ICS of 2.3.6 or a modified version . That won't work. By reading it seems to be that to go to 4.04 you need to be in stock ATT FXZ by using the RSD lite. Then get the new 4.04 over the air (OTA)
Then you have a stock 4.04 . You then can go do the root zip. Then load titimium backup and reload all of your apps and settings.
But read how your write your procedures. Probably get half as many questions if most of the links work. Example try to find RSD Lite 6.0 link.
You then add into all of this mix different phones, MFG's. etc. Example Atrix is almost in 3 different versions.
Also all the crap that is added to the end of post. Half the time there is more adds and quips and comments that get added and added to each response. That slows the reading from what is important to glaze over at the added 4 inches of not need to know.
Not a pretty picture. Sure many don't read more then one or two links. But doesn't help when you send a read and you'll find the answer. Just either answer or don't respond.
How you abbreviate the answer is only going to make part timers ask the same question time after time. It's nice sharing information. But just make a SR section if you don't want us to ask questions. That have been asked - and asked-

Where did this come from? And what did this have to do with the OP's question?
You just screwed yourself by doing to the OP what you claimed is an issue with:

Now if you have something to post to help the OP, even though this has been solved, then spit it out. If you have a question then ask it, otherwise go post elsewhere, as this post was utter crap and disrespectful to all of the people in the Atrix2 forum.
--EDIT--
Yeah I get one thing you were complaining about was peoples signatures, but too bad. People have every right to put whatever they want in their signature, and it does not need to have anything to do with anything, and sure does not need to even be related to android. I am guessing that your work e-mail signature is boring and dry and just has your name and title... Mine at work actually lists all my certifications in binary, so... Again if you do not like it, go someplace else.
Yeah I am being harsh, but for your 5th post total and, looking at the other junk you have posted you are not off to a good start. Stop whining and grow up, and read, read, and oh yeah read EVERYTHING again, you might actually learn something. If you do not understand an acronym, then ask what that means. I would rather have someone ask what is an FXZ or what is RSD lite and how do I get it, than having someone complain about it, in the insulting way that you have.
Oh and one last thing, ALL of us in here do this for free in our free time, and are not "pros" as you so insinuated, so you might also think about that the next time you post.
