samsung captivate i896 (rogers) gps/google navigation - Captivate General

i manually switched up some settings for the gps in my samsung captivate which helped improve my gps functions (for some reason it stopped working as efficiently as it was), and im also using skyhook also.
in google navigation, its having problem gathering directions to where i want to go, but it locates me flawlessly and faiirly quickly. Except when i requested directions from my house to my university, it got stuck at gathering directions for a while. In the background it shows a highlighted root, but continues to say 'getting directions'. As soon as i turned on wifi or 3g, bam, got the necessary data and my directions. I want my gps to function without the use of wifi or 3g support though, what is going on here? anyone else having this problem?
edit: i forgot to add that i installed the latest version of google maps, still does not work.

Blackjack II & GPS?

What's going on gang...
I just got a blackjack II through AT&T. I read online that it had built in GPS. However, when I go to telenav, it asks me to input a starting address?? Why would it do that if it could read where I am. lol
Any input, suggestions?
Try google maps, and see if it does the same thing...
For other things than Telenav you might have to unlock the GPS feature if you haven't already.

Err, the GPS is NOT locked. It should work out of the box.
If your GPS is not working, you will need to keep hard resetting your device until it does. I have tested this using Googe Maps, and the GPS works without installing the Modaco Hack.
The ONLY reasons you need to install any GPS hacks are if you use an application that you know requires a COM port. I cannot think of any such programs off the top of my head, but Google Maps, Windows Live Search, and Garmin Mobile XT all work flawlessly without the hack.
On the Modaco boards, there is some discussion that you do not need to hard reset, and instead you may simply turn off the device and remove the battery for several minutes (I believe they said 10). I have not confirmed this, but a hard reset has always worked for me and many other users.
Google maps worked with the GPS, without having to configure anything. Kinda surprised actually. In telenav, theres an option that says get GPS Unlimited, but I have to call customer service. Maybe that'll get everything squared away

GPS N3wb question...

Ok, maybe you guys can help here. I have quite a bit of experience with Windows Mobile phones (had an 8525, upgraded to a custom ROM, unlocked SIM/CID, etc), so that's what level of experience you're working with.
Now, I just picked up the Fuze, very cool phone! However, I'm wondering the following about GPS:
1. Is it available in this phone (i.e. AT&T didn't disable it).
2. I want to do GPS. I don't have a data plan. I DO have wi-fi. I DON'T want to be charged money. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance! The questions were probably asked elsewhere, but I looked around a bit and everything else looked way above these questions, which hopefully are pretty simple to answer...
i have the same question...
I know the Fuze has GPS, and i followed the steps on THIS link, but it doesnt seem to work, the GPS Test, never seems to finish looking for satelites, and when i go to Google Maps, it keeps "seeking GPS satelites"
GPS is available on the Fuze and it's independent of any data plan. All you need is some program that can access the GPS.
However, getting the GPS to work seems to be flakey at best. I tested mine briefly but wasn't able to get a signal lock. Need to do some more testing.
The GPS on my Fuze works great. First you should run Quick GPS and it will use the wifi to download the current GPS satellite locations. Then you should use google maps, you have to goto google maps menu and say 'use gps' then just go stand outside somewhere where theres no much tree coverage and wait for awhile (for the first time, now that I've done it once the GPS starts working in 10 seconds or so) Then you will start to pick up the gps satellites. I'm not sure how great it will be without a data plan... it uses the data plan to download the map info. Hopefully your wifi works out side.

What about using something like Garmin or TomTom's software? Would that work without a data plan, and without the need for wi-fi?
I use Garmin without a data plan and it works great. I installed it first thing after I got my GPS and didn't do anything to get it to work. The GPS on my FUZE worked out of the box like it should.

Verizon TP2 GPS only works after using VZ navigator.

Hi all, I am experiencing a bit of a strange problem that I have only seen duplicated here http://forums.verizon.com/t5/PDA-Sm...6;jsessionid=CA9AC87365188A46401DEAC053629BFF
My issue is that no matter what I try (including exchanging my phone for another new tp2) I can not get my gps to acquire satellite locks in bing or google maps. My location is on, my gps settings are all correct, always use quick gps and still nothing. The best I ever got was using gps viewer I managed to "see" up to 6 satellites at a time but never got a location or a lock...usually it sees 1-3 at a time and they fade in and out quickly. Still google maps has never shown anything but (0) satellites....UNTIL! I found the link above and called tech support. He informed me that because I was a prior alltel customer that I could not activate vz navigator (even for testing purposes) and I would have to switch my plan to allow this.
After reading the above forum link I called BS and proceeded to install VZ navigator and activate the free 1 day trial without issue. VOILA! I get an instant gps lock..full navigation (not just a-gps) and I can even turn off vz navigator and all of my 3rd party apps receive the same reception and all get locks near instantly.
I know some of you geniuses out there can figure out what and why this is happening. Also I would like to note that although I never ran vz navigator on them, I did reflash to 2 different roms and had no luck with gps lock either.
Here is my basic info in case it is relevant.
Rom version 1.18.605.12
Date 8/15/09
Radio 1.88.07WV
PRL 40059
I refuse to believe that I will have to pay for something that should be unlocked and free OR that if I want to use a different program that I will have to start and run VZ nav first.
Have you used the QuickGPS tool provided by verizon? I used this and the GPS then worked instantly. I never used VZ navigator
Yes. As I stated in my first post, I used quickgps each time with no luck. I again today tried before my trial ran out and vz navigator is the key to my gps receiving a signal.
I am having this same issue. I stood out in a blizzard today for 15mins to try and get a signal with no luck. Although I have not tried VZ nav to try and get a signal...I cant stand VZ nav anyways...
I'm not sure if I should be puzzled, or happy?...but suddenly my gps works!
After my vz nav demo ran out I noticed that the gps went right back to the same broken state, and was that way for a couple days until I finally just gave up playing with it, until yesterday when a co-worker asked if I could get directions to a supply house we were driving toward... I said "well yes, and no" so I fired up google maps and before the map loaded I saw "gps active" then "(8)" and it tracked me in less than 4 sec. Since then my gps has locked every time with every program, even inside my house.
Trust me im glad that everything is working now, but my question is... why? Very random, and I hope it doesnt stop working again, even though I powered it off several times just to make sure.
Sometimes there is no answer as to why. Could just be a glitch. I had a very similar problem in that Remote Desktop wouldn't work unless I had Internet Explorer loaded in the background. Sounds similar to your problem but with different hardware/software. Anyway the problem went away when I flashed my phone to MightyROM. Hope this helped!

Maps app post froyo update: poor performance, data connection loss

I don't know if this thread should go into the Nexus One forum as it's the only device that officially has froyo support, but I have an ATT Nexus One that was updated the other day with the official finalized Froyo build (FRF85B). When using the Maps app (and in turn the Navigation application as well) today, I noticed some very poor performance as the application is very slow and isn't loading mapping data. Multiple times, I received the error message "Data connection loss, retrying..." which I had never received before. Searching for locations/POI's seemingly took forever and the mapping data once found was slow. In Navigation, the computerized TTS speaks "Data connection lost" and stalls at the "getting directions" dialog. Please note that all this was done while using my own wifi connection. I don't think that the Maps application was updated with the Froyo release.
Anyone else having this problem?
EDIT: btw, Maps version is 4.3, which i guess was recently updated. now i'm not sure whether it's related to Froyo or just this recent update. However, I did have no issues with the application over the weekend, before the Froyo update.
Gotta say, I'm having some issues too. I kept getting data loss errors when I have full Edge signal when using Navigation. Luckily by this point I knew where I was driving.
Also, I use the "popular categories" lab, and when i press search, it does nothing. If I deactivate the lab, close Maps with ATK, and restart, the search button will work as normal. But if I try to activate popular categories again, it stops working again. I reverted the version by "uninstalling all updates", and tried it. Worked fine.
I just upgraded to 4.3 again. Search button with the popular categories lab works A-OK. Won't know for sure if it helped the data connection issue until I use it in a RW scenario.
Just look into logcat. Such behavior is typical for GM, when it gets some exceptions.

GPS way off

Hey all,
I'm using a rooted TB running BAMF 1.3.2, and my GPS location is anywhere from 5 blocks off to like half a mile off, usually. This is the case whether I'm using Google Location Services, Verizon GPS Services, or Standalone GPS.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Try the new radio and latest Rom version. Or use the app gps status to reset your gps.
You could also try this:

GPS way offArrow
My GPS jumps around based on what ROM I have installed. Right now I am using the Twisted Sense 1.51 and it's perfect.
The app called gps status, go outside and run it for a bit. Look at how many satilites you hook up to. Clear the caches in google maps and it should lock in your position.

GPS doesn't work...
Yeah.... so... GPS was working fine the other day. Location would jump around on the weather widget, but would work just fine using Google Maps or Glympse.... Now I get nothing. No satellites, and it's like it's not even looking. GPS Status, GPS Essentials and a couple others, and nothing at all. If i turn off verizon location and google location, all the apps act like i don't have any location service at all...
Still using stock rom, all I did was root, and GPS was working fine until yesterday.
Any ideas?
Edit: noob mistake. Shelled out the 4 bucks for root explorer, modified gps.config (mounted as ro with the free aps), rebooted and works just fine. Also bought the xda app cuz you guys have helped me with my tmo dash, vz touch pro, and vz imagio. Happy flashing everyone!
Hey again,
So, still no luck with the GPS. Upgraded to BAFM 1.6.3. Upgraded radio to 1.13.605.7 (1.16.00.0402w_1 CMDA) -- first one in The Obligatory Thunderbolt Radio Thread.
Still: my position is like 10 blocks off, and if I don't have Google Location Service turned on, it doesn't find my position at all, just as always.
Is there ANY help for my poor GPS?
mine was acting crazy also but with a diff rom. i got the new CDMA and old LTE and that fixed my problem. it would say i was 10miles away from my house or were ever i was
@skeet43169,
Do you have the version numbers for those?
