My first impressions - myTouch 4G General

Like many of you, I have been holding on to an old piece of hardware (iphone 3g unlocked) waiting for T-mobile to release a worthwhile phone. The Vibrant came out and since I expected the worst in terms of software updates, I waited and then all these other phones came out (g2, mt4g, hd7).
So yesterday I went for an outing at the mall and had the opportunity to fool around with all these devices for the first time. My choice: mt4g.
I was honestly just surprised how different it looked and felt compared to what I heard from reviews. It is extremely thin and light. The material difference was not noticeable and the phone was just so snappy. Disguised as a teen phone is a monster. I literally sat there playing with it for 30 min. Of course it has bloatware and for you hardcore android fans I would probably go g2 or find some way to remove all extra things from the mt4g.
I would go in store and play with it. For someone like me who has just read about these new devices, I had a blast messing around with these new beasts.

Yeah I like the design a lot. You going to get one?

Just checked out the infuse at at&t.

Was out today and thought I'd stop by and check out the infuse...
I spent about 5 minutes goin over it...
The screen looks awesome....
Touchwiz looks cheap...
GPS could not lock on my location..but the Atrix and the Inspire on display had no trouble at all..
I may be a little jealous if the display and battery size of the infuse...otherwise I'm stickin with the inspire...

good there really isn't a plus from other galaxy s phones. Sure there's a better camera, bigger screen, ffc, and a better screen but what's hardware without software?

I messed with one for five minutes as well. Salesman was really hyping it up how it was the best phone on at&t right now. I agree the screen is nice but I still prefer the inspire.
I feel just like that whenever I look at my wife’s Galaxy Captivate’s bright screen, until I try to navigate that damn Touchwiz. Grass will always be greener on the other side when it comes to technical toys. But with all the things I can do with my Inspire 4G, I can do without the faster CPU, front facing camera, and the extra .2 inches of high def screen until next Inspire (something comparable to) comes out.

if we sell enough of them, samsung gives us goodies, we win points that we can redeem for electronics and such...
so you're damn right its the best phone we have at AT&T right now..
(i still use my inspire and i think its way better than both infuse and atrix, much more solid built etc)
but yea.. when the next phone comes out that gives us salesmen something good in return, guess what.. it's gonna be the best phone you can buy for your money!! i guarantee it!! *wink*
The Infuse looks very interesting to me.
I checked out a non-working demo unit at Costco and it's about the same size as the Inspire and the screen was noticeably bigger. Bravo Samsung for coming out with a 4.5" screen phone and using as much real estate on the front of the phone as possible.
The GPS lock problem... hmmm... gee Samsung... haven't you learned?
As far as the UI: Come on... most of us hate TouchWiz. That's a given. Just replace it with LauncherPro or ADWLauncher. I bet half of the Inspire users here don't use Sense (though I do and actually like Sense).
Would I trade in my Inspire for the Infuse (I bought from Costco): No. I'm still pissed off at Samsung over the Captivate GPS issues... but if the Infuse turns out to have 100% working hardware and features as advertised it'd be a step in the right direction winning me back. I would recommend it to non-phone obsessed friends who don't care about quick OS updates.
We'll be hearing about any defects or problems within a week if there are any.
I played with one too. Reminded me of my captivate just bigger. kinda cool, but eh. I still prefer my Inspire!

I love sense, and when I had my captivated, everything about it was HTC. notification bar, battery meter, signal meter, app icons, etc. I wasn't phone obsessed as far as updates until I got into Android. So that may change for them.

Samsung's hardware is tempting, but I'll never forget the garbage I (we) went through with the Captivate. Dying earpiece and external speakers (both happened to me on different handsets), sleep death, no GPS, the OTA update that bricked stock phones...all of this and more, and the phone hasn't even been out for a year.
Not only that, but Samsung insulted us by releasing a GPS "fix" app in the market that "restored the GPS to factory settings"...you know, the ones that didn't work in the first place?
I'm not a fanboy and won't spend my money buying products from a company that is all to happy to ass-rape me for giving them business. Apple has the luxury for rabid fanboyism, so no matter what they do, people will still buy their products. Samsung doesn't have that, they just think they do for some reason.
The good side of the Infuse is his unlocked bootloader.
My wife has a Inspire and I have a captivate, I have to say the captivate is really easier to unlock. But I agree with most of you about the captivate, a stock captivate is really not perfect, but I'm running my cappy with Contiuuum 5.4.1 (Android 2.3.3) and I can say bye bye to all the problems, my gps is a dream and my battery time is amazing.
I have a SE Xperia X10 and I'm in the market for a new phone, so I went to my local AT&T store for the Sunday release of the Infuse. I played with it, and with the Inspire, for about an hour.
I came away from the experience thinking my next phone will be an HTC...now if I can only hold out for the upcoming "Holiday." hee hee. Here's why-
1. I have owned Samsungs before, including a brief stint with the Captivate, and I'm unimpressed with the company as far as updates and support.
2. The HTC aluminum unibody case just says "build quality" to me. The infuse felt just like the Captivate in the hand - like flimsy, cheap plastic that should not be used for high-end phones. I know some people want light weight, but come on - few extra grams won't kill ya and it just might save your phone if you're a little rough with it.
3. The Infuse's screen was way too color over-saturated for me. It's bright and clear, but looks surreal to me. I would tire of that in hurry.
4. I could detect no speed or smoothness advantage for the Infuse. Heck, I could load up a custom rom on the Inspire, overclock it conservatively and just beat the snot out of the Infuse... which leads me to....
5. There seems to be a whole lot more developer time and interest in the HTC devices, which means loads more fun for me.
I have both phones with me right now and here are my quick observations between the two phones (Inspire running current version of LeeDroid 2.3.3):
Web browsing: Inspire – Seems to load pages faster and better scrolling.
Camera: Infuse – For some reason the pictures from my Inspire produce a redish look and are too soft, almost out of focus.
Build quality: Inspire – HTC = solid. I don’t notice much difference when carrying them in my pocket as the Infuse is lighter.
Screen: Infuse - However the Inspire is not bad. I could live with both. After looking at the Infuse I do notice a little bit of softness to the Inspire’s text.
Call quality/Handset speaker: Infuse – I have always had an issue with the call quality of HTC devices for my taste. I have to say that the Infuse has one of the best sounding speakers. I would rate it on par with the iPhone 4 or better.
GPS: Infuse – I get a lock in about 10 seconds. Inspire takes about 1 minute with current ROM/Radio.
Battery life: Infuse – But not by much (10 to 15% better).
Speedtests: Infuse – Speed tests seam consistently higher using Speedtest.net (between 4-5 download and 1.5-2 upload).
Battery charging: Inspire – for some reason the Infuse (and most Samsung phones) take forever to fully charge.
Reception: Still need a few more days with the phone but did have an issue with it the very first call. Called AT&T to make a change to my account and dropped the call five times. The lady at AT&T apologized and said that her land line has been dropping a lot of calls lately (WTF?!?!). I should have a conclusion within the next few days.
I’m not going to get into Touchwiz vs. Sense as there are several write-ups on this but based upon the above, I’m leaning towards the Infuse. Call quality is fantastic on my side as well as the other side. I travel a lot so being in airports and cars this is very important for me. The other item is camera quality. Images may be a little oversaturated by they look sharp and I’m no longer to grabbing my wife’s iPhone 4 to take pictures or videos.
Hope this helps anyone looking at both of these devices and let me know if you have any questions.
I may have to reconsider. I spent another day playing with the phones at the ATT shop. I loaded up speedtest on the Inspire, Attrix and Infuse and ran it on each phone about five times. The Infuse consistently beat the others on download and upload. It was close with the Attrix, but the Inspire got its clock cleaned every time.
The screen on the Infuse started to grow on me when I got out of the start screen and its surreal, over the top background and icon colors. When you look at web pages, movies and snapped pictures, it looks amazingly good. The blacks are so very black, even way off axis.
I also played around with the cameras and I have to say that the Infuse is outstanding. Very fast focus and snap and consistently better looking shots...well, could have been the better screen making them appear to be better.
With all the apps coming out now that utilize video chat with the front camera, I don't know if I could go another year or so without one and of course the Infuse has a nice one.
The only down side I had with the Infuse was the build quality. Now that I think about it, it was really the "feel" and the super light weight. Then it dawned on me...duh!...I'm going to put a case on it, so that can be easily corrected.
So now the only thing that I have left to quibble about is the lack of notification lights on the Infuse.....and yet, something tells me that there will be an app or fix that converts some of those other front lights to message notifications. And then of course there's the relative lack of developer input on Samsung devices.
Ok, so do you think I am talking myself into the Infuse?....maybe, just maybe.
Lmao u diss the infuse then come back and suddenly its way better? Little lost in denial

Every Samsung phone I have seen / had my hands on felt poorly made and cheap. Felt like if I touched it the wrong way I would break it! Plus it doesn't have a dual core CPU so I am not seeing the benefit to switching to it and paying $100 more than the Inspire.
Yes indeed. This inspire has fallen off the back of the car and bounced and slid a goodways before realizing that on this narrow road here in mesquite. I picked it up after backtracking and had dust on the screen that's it. And even had it.upstairs and my nephew dropped the phone 1.5 stories and not one crack nor scratch. Btw had a platinum series casing on the whole time.
NO INSPIRES WERE HURT THRU THESE HORRID TIMES

If I wanted a Captivate, I would buy a Captivate. The Infuse is just a stupid phone in my opinion. It's not bad, I'm sure, but it doesn't make sense to buy one with the Holiday and Ma Bell's version of the Galaxy S II right around the corner.

Debating leaving Android for iPhone...

I was happy with my G1 back in October of 2008. It was great. Then, due to iPhone leapfrogging and hardware limitations of the G1, I needed a "better phone." Well, I got the first one that looked good on paper...The dreaded Samsung Vibrant.... the thing I HATED about it was the copycat look stolen from the iPhone, but, I put up with it. Then, right off the bat, I noticed that the gps didn't work. At all. I was lucky if it had me within a block of where I actually was. So, I thought it was Samsung. So I rooted and tried different ROMs. Still not happy with this glitchy, slow-ass phone.
Am I REALLY buying the marketing hype that the iPhone "just works???" I really like the Android system but am SO unhappy about the problems with the hardware etc. My wife and son ech have the HTC Sensation. Great phone but the battery? Please! Lasts 4 hours with decent use.
Here are my two problems with Apple:
1. Overpriced, and EVERYONE KNOWS IT. I have a problem with paying for a device that I KNOW has a HUGE markup in it. good for Apple, bad for consumer.
2. My wife, through her work has been given 2 Macbooks over the years. A white macbook about 12 years ago, and a macbook air a month ago. The original macbookHAD MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANY WINTEL SYSTEM I HAVE EVER HAD. So, we swore off Apple. Then comes the marketing hype. We actually bought into and believed (like the IT dept at her work this year) that the macbook Air was made by God hiimself. Like all apple products. The first week, it freezes up while she is making a powerpoint presentation. Totally frozen. Has to Hard restart. A week later, freezes up in WORD. Same thing, no soft reboot. Had to turn it off physically.
Anyway, I rant. So, on to my question -
SHOULD I STICK IT OUT AND WAIT FOR THE NEXUS PRIME OR GO IPHONE 5?
The Nexus Prime is going to be made by Samsung....
I am attaching a post I made earlier today on the tmobile forums regarding samsung just fyi.
"First there was the Behold fiasco. Then all the Samsung apologists said, oh, samsung has learned their lesson. REALLY.... I don't know who to blame and who to, therefore, quit... I THINK its Samsung. The phone (without rooting and installing modded ROMs) is a piece of iPhone knock-off crap. (I hate Touchpiss because, yes Apple you are right, it freaking looks like iOS). I bought the damn phone in July of 2010. We were promised a 2.2 update shortly. It was like 6 months later to finally get that pos.
Then we are told IN MARCH via samsung twitter etc. that 2.3 would be coming soon. (Yes, the Vibrant was mentioned specifically). Its been ANOTHER 6 months and NOTHING.
I AM DONE WITH SAMSUNG.
Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Tell me if Samsung has had the 2.3 update waiting for 6 months and it's "T-mobiles fault."
Tell me they have learned their lesson.

simple
just think what you can not do with AndroidOS that you can do with iOS and vice versa
if you find more + points on the iOS side, then by all means get an iphone / ipad

It's even simpler. Be careful which Android phone you buy. The iPhone is excellent, but it isn't as perfect as it should be. And there are Android phones that are better than the iPhone. But you have to discover which ones. Usually buying your phones from a store with a good refund policy will help in discovering the good Androids from the bad.
For battery life, you cannot find anything better than the iPhone 4. For the iPhone 5, I don't know about the battery life. But it is assumed to be just as good. But iOS isn't as user friendly as Android. And you can...I know from experience...find Android phones just as pleasing and satisfying as any iPhone can be. And even more so.
I'd highly suggest the Nexus S or the next version of the Nexus. Or look at something from HTC, like the Sensation, if you're on T-Mobile, or the HTC Inspire if you're on AT&T.
My Samsung Infuse...a Galaxy S descendant...is quite outstanding. The GPS issues Sammy had with the Galaxy S phones is no more on their later phones.
If you want a work of art hardware wise and reliable and secure operation, get an iPhone. Just don't be surprised that you need to navigate through many menus to perform a simple function which, in Android, comes with the tap of a single button. And don't expect to do anything with an iPhone outside of using it's collected apps. There's no customization to speak of.
I personally have the Sensation and once it's rooted with a different rom battery life is much better and performance is X10 compared to stock. If you want a great performing phone with excellent battery life though look for an HTC phone with a second generation single core snapdragon processor. The Inspire 4G, G2 and the MyTouch 4G all fall into this category for AT&T/T-Mobile. Honestly the Inspire is one of the better built phones out there and this is coming from a tech that repairs phones all the time. Also not that the Inspire doesn't perform well out of the box, but running aosp android (cyanogenmod) from a phone with that kind of hardware makes for an awesome android experience. Only issue with this phone is no front facing camera which might not even be a big deal to you, I don't know.
Thanks for the input!
Quick side-note. Although official 2.3 has not dropped, the speed of CM7 on the vibrant took it to a whole different level. Amazing. But no source = issues like no GPS at all and poor battery life. Thus my HUGE disappointment with Samsung never giving us gingerbread.

Lets talk about Android

I have been having numerous arguments with people regarding Android vs the rest.
We all know that Android is an operating system, that is used by many phone manufacturers - therefore it CANNOT be compared to iPhone directly and vise versa!
Same thing is about Windows OS.
What I am trying to say is that Android equipment manufacturers have to step up the game. I believe that making a new phone every other month is a BIG NO NO. Especially when the phone is not well tested.
As an example, I own myTouch 4G. First one had a washed out screen and not working Genius button. Second one had a spic of dust under the screen, but lucky for me - it had both good screen and eMMC. So I decided to keep it. Other folks have their phones die on them because of the bad eMMC chip.
Similar issue goes to the G2 (I read about bad eMMC chips). I also heard that Sensation has some issues too!
I witnessed people exchanging up to 7 phones, and yet to get a good one.
On the other hand, Samsung devices are seem to be very plastic on the touch. I did held them in hand. Yes, the screen looks gorgeous, but the phone itself feels bad in the hand.
LG is another story.
I haven't tried or read about SE phones.
You would ask, why the hell did I write this all?
I simply want to voice my opinion. I just sick to see all these phones popping out and then read that one has bad power button, another has 2 types of screen, and then get one of them. I really want to see Android rise up in class!
Heck for not having problems I could have gone with iPhone, but I am an Android fan and chose it because it can do what I need!
I believe with the resources that Samsung, HTC, LG and other have - they can do so much better!
Lets discuss what bad sides Android phones have and what can be improved. I think it is more productive topic than fighting over blindly.
The reason for Samsung's "plastic" feel is durability, you drop a metal phone then the weight is going to make it more likely to break, the plastics Samsung uses often just has the back pop off, maybe a scratch.
As for HTC, they're just not a quality company. They build devices that are pretty from afar but once you use them they often have horrid flaws. Very little quality control.
There's nowhere near the level of QC there used to be in the 'real' smartphones - Treos, Communicators, iPAQs etc.
I think they do a pretty good job, there's a fit and finish for just about every taste out there today. The target audience has changed a lot, the userbase has expanded exponentially, plus there are many more manufacturers today, all vying for a slice of the pie - price competitiveness has a lot to do with this, too.
It sucks, but these things are built to be thrown away. Why pump billions of dollars into the fit and finish of something outdated two weeks after it hits the streets? Sucks for us, but 'near enough is good enough' for the manufacturers, and fair enough in my opinion

Agreed about Samsung durability, I've dropped my phone on probably every surface and it is still good.
As for android there many problems with the OS. No hardware acceleration is probably big on my list. My nexus runs pretty good but I do notice lag from time to time. Stock browser is a joke to use, hella amounts of lag when viewing pics and forget about even viewing flash, so opera for me.
I hope ICS will live up to the hype, because I'm really digging the Nokia and windows mobile deal. Only time will tell...
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I was rooting for androids latest iteration to blow at least iOS out of the water but if that leaked nexus build is a final it doesn't even look smooth on a nexus device...
Who know?Probably NOT a final build as it as no acceleration. Word is that ICS will have hardware acceleration for both the interface and browser.
We will see.It does look impressive though....
On quality:My HTC Desire is horrendous, all buttons are almost dead, that has to do with quality. On the other hand my Huawei IDEOS X5 is surprisingly good for what i paid for (hint: zero but costs about 199euros).
If you want quality go for a truly expensive and good phone like the gs2, if not buy smething cheaper.
P.S. the buttons on the iphone 4 HAVE problems.3 of my friends went to the applestore to change them. That is not good build quality imho.
Eh, I like dells build quality though they fail as a software company. Honestly though I do hope ics is more impressive than it looked in that video because that was just slow and choppy, then again I guess the default UI of android isn't what's supposed to sell android. It's the customization options available.
I have a HTC Desire HD, and in my oppinion Android+Sense is the best mobile combo. all the good things from android + an awesome HTC skin.
Company's like Samsung don't make skins for their phones. I think that they should start making them. Ans if they do that, i might buy a Samsung phone or something like that after my HTC. But if they dont start making skins, i don´t want them...
i like my desire with htc sense, also like iphone with long time battery.

i own HTC devices with metal... and all of them are broken, chipped so badly i have to pull out my sandy paper or file to smooth the metal back out, because the phone shell has been ripped apart after many close encounter with the floor
since i switched to Samsung the plastic design has proven that it can handle the drops much better than the metal
I got an issue with samsung and their software updates.
I've been lucky so far with HTC. Good build quality and frequently updated software.
If I need to trade off iphone quality for the freedom of Android, I will.

There got to be some military grade glass, that will hold all kinds of abuse. My back cover of Glacier is already swinging from side to side. I really hope that this upcoming Nexus will fix all of the issues I, and many other, have with Android phones build quality.
I still do not get, where did samsung got info that 4.65" screen is good for everyone?
hmm. interesting thread, and views.
my experience hasn't been so great with samsung phones. i had a samsung moment and that thing was terrible. and apparently the gs2 is having some problems as well. users have reported problems with the screen/display having some kind of stain like color on it, and the wifi antenna has also been reported by many to be skittish.
not surprising to me. that's what happens when you push a device out based on deadlines rather than completion of thorough testing. regardless of what company is putting the phone out - HTC, samsung, LG... any of them will have problems if they don't ensure a good testing phase pre-release.
i went from the moment to the evo 3D, and the difference is night and day. and i have handled a gs2 and all i can say is i am not impressed. it feels weak and flimsy and in the end, it's still a samsung to me, with the samsung company behind it. i will never own one. but that's just me.
meanwhile, my evo 3D seems to be just a powerhouse in the performance area. i consistently hit quadrant scores over 4300 and linpack scores of 100+ and RL benchmark is completed in about 18 seconds.
there are merely a couple phones out there putting numbers like that down consistently. i know it is that fast in reality, as well, because performing tasks such as viewing, zipping, and opening pdfs from my work email are done extremely fast, and significantly faster than when the phone wasn't rooted with a custom rom/kernel.
just my opinion, but if you can't see the advantage in power and functionality in the android OS, you are not using your phone for anything other than playing games and texting.
I played this bubble game, it's fun. After a few rounds I found myself always stopped in the middle by the app ad and when I restarted the game, the previous records were all gone. Annoying!

I love the relevance! Made my day so far
I agree with most of your arguments, but there's nothing we can do about it.
Manufacturers are still going to release one smartphone per month because people are used to buy tons of different phones to show to their friends.
More smartphones = more profit.
Doesn't matter if for the market it would be a lot better to play with only one "model" like iPhone does.
Let's hope that Google's Nexus can step up its game and be the iPhone rival.

HTC admits they went banana with releasing new phones in 2011

So i had some nasty discussion with some folks here when I ranted about poor optimization of the software in the Sensation. To me the Sensation never felt like a modern flagship dualcore phone, in fact it performed worse in many tasks than older HTC phones.
The obvious reason was HTC being too busy pushing out new models every 2weeks or so instead of polishing their current lineup. Software updates took forever to release because of it, e.g. by making a "New" Sensation XE with seprate firmware instead of bringing a mutual update for both Sensations and so on. But people kept trolling and downvoting threads just because someone dares to critisize...
Anyways, HTC actually admitted they were too eager with new releases:
"'We have to get back to focusing on what made us great – amazing hardware and a great customer experience. We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much. So 2012 is about giving our customers something special. We need to make sure we do not go so far down the line that we segment our products by launching lots of different SKUs.'
The company’s u-turn follows disappointing global results earlier this month when first quarter net profit fell 26% to $365m, its first quarterly decline in earnings for two years as it faced competition from Apple and Samsung’s Galaxy range"

So there you have it fanboys. Even HTC makes mistakes. I was a fanboy myself (the reason I got the Sensation in the first place) but then was put down by the slopiness that became apparent with HTC 2011 phones.
Fortunately the Sensation is not lost yet, in fact ICS might still make this device "sensational". My virtuous ICS ROM makes things sooo much more enjoyable, FPS in 3d games doubled, and FINALLY lag when scrolling lists/menus is all but gone, yay!
I'm curious on HTC's 2012 lineup and what they will throw in the ring against the upcoming Galaxy S3 superphone.
Maybe this time they'll get their act right and return to their former glory.
P.S. Yeah I know this is old news but I kinda wanted to hear what people think about it.
I agree that ICS is good on the sensation, but how much of that is the tweaks and time put in by the devs here?
In any case, they could start by fixing their crappy GPS implementation that barely works stock and with a ton of tweaking can give you rough coordinates, but far too jumpy and refreshes too slowly to be used as a "real" navigation device (ie: Garmin).
Using it as a speedometer, even after tweaking, leaves you about 3 seconds behind and with a 5 to 10mph accuracy.
Their track record with poor GPS extends far beyond this phone too... I mostly like the sensation, but battery life and buggy GPS is making me think twice about buying another HTC.
If only my Garminfone had more RAM and a faster CPU. That thing, to this day, is the most rock solid hardware I have seen in an Android phone. Too bad they decided to underpower it.
have you ever owned a "perfect" anything? i keep coming back to this phone every time i think it's dissapointing me. to me, there really isn't anything worth paying over $400 on the market right now, especially the s2 variants, so im stcking with this phone at least untl ics is ifficially out. i'm still running on a gb rom by baad that feels great speed wise.
to each its own. i do agree with your point about making 3, pretty much, identical phones: xe, sensation, and amaze.
The only thing annoying about this phone is the dust i see on the sides under the screen under direct sunlight. Rest all is fine and it still feels capable
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
I'm enjoying the sensation running ICS. It does all I need it to do - and coming from an iPhone 4 (that I gave to my wife) I am appreciating the openness of Android. Lots of pros and cons, but the sensation is a great device at a great price. I agree with another poster - it's in the sweet spot price/performance wise. I don't expect premium build quality for the price I paid.

Finally made the full transition to Windows Phone 8

Okay, well first I'll start with a bit about my phone history. I started out on the HTC Wallaby in 2003ish which I spent four paychecks working part time at Long John Silvers to get. After that, I moved on through a Windows Mobile lineup.
Samsung Blackjack, T-Mobile Dash, Samsung Blackjack II, HTC Touch, HTC PPC6800 and then back to Blackjack 2 (HTC's batch back then broke if you looked at them wrong.)
After this, Android came to fruition. I joined the nation's nobody character at the time and their little beta test that was Android. I had the G1 and picked up an Omnia II for good measure just in case Android turned out to be a huge flop. The G1 was a phenomenal device though, I remember when the first emulators for it came out, I didn't even know what to do with all the possibilities. Soon after, I moved through Android devices as follows;
G1
Mytouch 3g
Samsung Behold 2
Motorola Cliq
Garminfone
Mytouch 4g
Mytouch Slide
Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S1)
Motorola Backflip (While the vibrant was being repaired)
Dell Streak 5
Samsung Captivate
back to the Dell Streak 5
It was then that I picked up the HTC HD2, beauty that it is. I still have that phone, running Windows Phone 7 and 2.1 (Yes, I know it's behind but I haven't played with it in awhile.) This was my biggest step into modding, until then I'd only flashed roms but this phone made me want to develop stuff. I cooked a few Android and Winmo roms, messed with a few kernels, etc. This phone will forever hold a place in my heart.
So, as good as that phone was, WP7 can't be that bad, right? Eh... Well, I wasn't as disappointed as most. Even in it's initial release it was more fluid than any other system available and it had Netflix and high quality games like IloMilo that I simply could not get on Android. However, going from the pure black to the hideous LCD panels that HTC used at the time making everything grey was damn near depressing. I traded this for a pair of dell streaks that someone had messed up the software on, I fixed the software and had two nice phones for one. I couldn't be happier, right? Wrong.
I went back to Android and that's when the lag first became apparent to me and I have not since been able to not recognize it in even the current flagship (Though the Nexus 4 does pretty damn well.)
I couldn't put up with it so I fell right back to Windows Phone, picking up an HTC Surround for one of my Streaks... Ugh, that device was awful but the OS was just so, refreshing. I quickly put the money down to get a Dell Venue Pro.
I used the Dell Venue Pro longer than any other device I've ever used. I used it almost one full year. after this, I was sent a Nokia Lumia 800 as a developer device and realized what perfection in a phone was. It did bug me that it didn't have a FFC but that little bother didn't damper the experience of that phenomenal device one bit. The fact that it never officially came to the US was disheartening.
However, when I realized they were EOLing Windows Phone 7 to make way for a sexy new kernel, I had to pawn it off on someone so I could maximize my return. I traded for an iPhone 4s. This was my bittersweet introduction to Apple. I loved the apps but there was literally nothing else on that awful OS to love. The layout was uninteresting, it had the worst keyboard I'd seen since Android Donut, it was generally ugly, the only likable thing was the games. That phone itself is miserable. I quickly traded it for a GS3 with a beat up backplate.
I will tell you now and I know most will disagree, the GS3 is awful. I mean, Touchwiz feels like it should be on android 2.1, not a modern version and the improvements that Sammy put in aside from the GPU acceleration were largely useless. I can't express my disappointment enough. I traded it for a pair of Galaxy S2 which I turned around and swapped for a One X + I used the One X plus and in terms of build quality it was great, HTC had finally started moving up on the overall user experience. They didn't have all the gimmicky features that Samsung uses but damn did they know how to make something that worked. Were that thing rootable at the time, I may have kept it around. Sadly, it wasn't and when I decided to get rid of it, I was fortunate enough to find someone dumb enough to trade a Nexus 4 for it (I'm persuasive and showed him price tags.)
The Nexus 4 is hands down THE premium android device, I also got a LGOG at this time that I guy brought by to have rooted and never came back for (still sitting in my drawer though I do play with it still) I love that Nexus 4 though, great device but the fact that Google's own phone can't run 1/3 of the games I want to play was outright disappointing. I traded it and $130 for an HTC One. Good device, great user interface but I don't know if mine is an exception, there's a painfully large gap between the aluminum and plastic that just bugs me. That and lag is still present (Though not as bad as it is on the awful GS4) I keep it around though, definitely good for games...
After this, I shelled out the money and bought a Lumia 920 outright. I have to say, this is the first phone since the Dell Venue Pro I've been satisfied with. Best camera, best build quality, say what you will about the software but it's reliable, lets me communicate via any means necessary with no hiccups and remains smooth no matter what I'm doing on it.
Some complain that the Lumia 920 can't be customized. I bed to differ, my phone was black three weeks ago, red two weeks ago, yellow yesterday and last night I put the finishing touches on painting the Tardis on the back of a black Lumia 920 shell. There is little better customization and it doesn't require some ugly case. It's the first phone I've had that had games that I seemed to enjoy all of, few junk games and the wireless charger in my car, at my job, built into my nightstand... It's just too convenient. I'm a power user and I love my Nokia Lumia 920 and it's Windows Phone 8 OS.
