Can't Decide on what Android to get. Any ideas?

Quite simply i have decided its about time i get myself a new 'high' end android phone. I have owned the HTC Magic (32b) for some time now and while i do like it very much i feel its a bit week when it comes to multi tasking and new versions of android i feel arnt completely stable on it as they just are not built for this old phone.
So anyway its time for me to pick a new phone, but im just not sure which to go for. I like the look of either the Nexus one, Motorola Milestone or the HTC desire all for there own reasons.
Both the Nexus One and HTC desire to me seem to be pretty much the same apart from that the Nexus One has already got froyo and that the HTC desire has sense UI and optical track ball thingy.
While the Motorola Milestone i like very much for its qwerty keyboard and i believe it has the best GPU (am i right?). The Motorola is also the cheaper of the phones which is always a plus.
So my question to all of you is what are your thoughts on the different phones and which would you pick? are there any other features i should take into thought? or other phones?

I like the Nexus One and the Desire.
I forget it the Desire has a snapdragon processor as well? If yes, I'd go for that one. The body is really really sexy and the optical trackball is a step ahead of the trackball on the n1.
However, I really like the N1. IMO it's one of the most underrated phones out there. Battery life is 12 to 14 hours moderate / light use. One thing to be aware of, the speaker is tiny and the phone doesn't ring very loud compared to the Blackberry I had before.

As far as I remember the HTC Desire lacks the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA. I don't know what exactly you are planing to use your new phone, but I (considering the huge amount of time I spend internet browsing), I'd take the Nexus One.
I'd also take into consideration the fact that the Nexus comes with a bit more powerful battery than the HTC Desire. I own a HTC Magic too. Every time I keep my wi-fi connection on for more than 2-3 hours, the battery runs out and the phone shuts down, which can is sometimes very annoying.

I think the Samsung Galaxy S is going to be the new king of android... I have the same problem - can't make my mind what to get.

If I would go for Android I certainly will wait for this one...

But I´m not going for Android

IMO the best Android phone is the EVO 4G, if you´re on Sprint. It all depends on what you are going to do with your phone, do you really need the 1 Ghz processor and such HIGH-end specifications?

First off, I came across this info while researching phones a while ago (~6 weeks ago), but I'm pretty sure that this is STILL the case.
You mentioned the Motorola Milestone as a potential candidate. I would recommend you NOT get this phone. This is because while the Motorola Droid can be rooted and use ROMs, be overclocked (to 800MHz! get that one lol) etc, the Milestone's bootloader is locked down by Motorola which means that you can NOT install 'custom' ROMs on it, you're stuck with the stock ROM (at least until Motorola actually decide to open up the bootloader).
It's not a matter of waiting for someone to crack it either; apparently they've signed the bootloader and not released their signing keys (sorry, I'm not sure of the technical details), which makes it pretty much impossible to load up anything because it will check the signature before loading anything.
So while I don't really have a real suggestion, I may have narrowed down your choices. Do investigate thoroughly if the next phone you buy really is 'open' or just 'open for marketing/advertising purposes'!

I'm looking for a new phone as well, even though the one I have is perfectly fine and zippy (HTC Hero GSM with the Cronos ROM) haha
The one thing I AM sure of is that I definitely require a physical keyboard! Touchscreen isn't good for hooves like mine lol

do not get the milestone.
If you can, try to get an unlocked droid (I for one need a keyboard), but don't get a milestone since motorala locked it up making it unrootable (so far).
besides that I'd get a N1, I've played with a friends and it's pretty sleek, very fast and all around great

As im in the UK i cant easly get a droid, and alot of the ones on ebay that say they are a droid are the milestone, is there any easy way of telling them apart?

I was a former milestone user, and the draconian attitude of Motorola regarding the bootloader led me to swap it for an HD2. Now I am in rom-flashing heaven. The HD2 is miles ahead of the milestone in terms of customizability and usability.
BUt to answer your question, AFAIK, Droid = CDMA while Milestone = GSM. So if you are using a GSM network in UK, a Droid is out of the question, and you can only use the (locked) Milestone.
Im also in the same bandwagon, observing the android landscape, looking for what phone to get (looks like android for the HD2 is gonna take awhile). Since HTC has yet to announce a GSM version of the EVO, the Samsung Galaxy is looking MIGHTY tempting. Cant beat a 4-inch super AMOLED screen.
if you CANT wait, then just get the Desire or the Nexus One. Im more partial to the Desire myself. I like Sense.

the TMobile MyTouch Slide is suppose to have a great physical KB. I hated the Hero's KB, in fact that's partly why I didn't get it. I tried the KB on the iPhone (amazing KB) and on the HTC EVO (really, really nice) and you'd be surprised how you get used to it.

That's exactly right.
And since there aren't any CDMA-based networks in the UK, the Droid isn't an option at all.
In the UK, I can't really see why anyone would take the Nexus One over the Desire.
All you do is end up limiting yourself to Vodafone with their crappy web bundle and poor 3G coverage.

sadly i havnt to be with vodafone has they are the only network that i can get coverage in my village

I've used the iPhone's keyboard too, and I also thought it was much better than the Hero's.
Still, I think I've pretty much had my fill of touch keyboards hehe

Or hold out for the HTC Vision if you want a hardware keyboard.

I tried the vibrant (first time i left htc android phones) and i was extreamly disapointed just because of that i wouldnt :/ but thats just me

I think the difference here would be the updates would be coming from google not samsung, hardware on my old vibrant was awesome, well except the plastic feel, its software that held it back.

I am. I am a Vibrant owner transitioning to MT4G. Transition has not been smooth: Both handsets I have been sent so far have dust under the screen. Plus I really don't like the MT4G screen...

Only thing is the plastic build, why Samsung?

Hell no! Why would I want to leave what I have now for a plastic feeling phone? Plus, if you ask me its a downgrade. No 4G, really? This is where they lost me. Why build what most will look at as a super phone, but leave out the new speeds in 4G? I rather have 4G over gingerbread any day.

Nobody ever said it didn't come with HSPA+. I doubt that it wouldn't if it is to be such a big hit for them. I also came from a Vibrant and like everyone said, the hardware was great but the software and Samsung support wasn't.
I like the mt4G and I'll stick with it until something more revolutionary comes out. The Nexus S just looks like an iphone wannabe to me (in terms of looks). No thanks.

I have to say, this looks promising, and if it has at least the specs of Galaxy S + HSPA+LED Flash+ FF Camera/Video Chat... Aaaand Gingerbread!!! THAT's the killer folks....
SUX PART for me...... my MT4G is coming in mail in the next few days.

I would never give up my MT4G for a Samsung phone even though updates will come from Google I've been burned way to many times by different Samsung phones I've had in the past not gonna take the chance. If it was a HTC that would be a whole different ball game.

If I had know it was coming out soon I would've waited to check it out.

I'm interested, but I really enjoy this myTouch 4G.
I had the Vibrant, and absolutely loved it save for two things: the GPS/Compass problem (which was never fixed), and the lag in the OS. Besides that, I loved the screen and the media playback.
The Nexus S would have to pull some **** to woo me. I'm talking: first-party docks, physical camera button, HSPA+.
Depending on how nice Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' is, I might buy one just to play around with it, before I decide if I'm going to hold onto the myTouch 4G for a while. If T-Mo doesn't plan on updating the firmware, then that may weigh in on my decision. Otherwise, the myTouch 4G is kind of everything I was waiting for, with a little bit of stupid carrier bloat.
I read somewhere that T-Mo stated something along the lines of: '...we're not going to update the firmware unless there's a real reason to', in regards to the myTouch 4G. If that's the case, I may return it.
For now, I just want to enjoy this awesome phone. This is hard, of course, when 4-5 of the nicest phones you've ever seen leaked today. What a crazy day!

If the Nexus S was made by HTC I'd either be be crying my eyes out right now or be racing to the nearest t-mobile store with my MT4G all nicely packed up and ready to go (today is last day of my remorse period). I was a bit reluctant to buy the MT4G because I was really wanting a Nexus 2. Ended up liking the MT4G so much that I was quite content giving up on the Nexus 2, especially since we have perm-root. Now that I know the Nexus S is made by Samsung I couldn't be happier with my decision not to wait around.
Oh and according to the leaked BestBuy documents the Nexus S supports EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900MHz, HSUPA 5.76/7.2 900/1700/2100MHz, HSUPA 5.76/7.2 900/1700/2100. Anything missing?

If this has a non-RFS based filesystem and a working GPS, it could be a nice phone.
However, the new Samsung phone coming in February looks nicer with a larger, s-amoled 2 screen and HSDPA+ but it doesn't seem to have a FFC.

The first thing I noticed was the absence of a track ball/pad. That made cursor navigation VERY frustrating on the Vibrant. Plus, they kept that ity-bity volume rocker. I’ll bet that wee power button is positioned the same too. That made me want to pull my teeth out. I don’t see any REAL evidence of a notification LED, as the proxy/light sensors can be mistaken for just that. I shudder to think it has the same GPS and compass hardware as the Galaxy S line. The leaked spec sheet shows NO HSPA+. Same Vibrant all-plastic body too.
Without more evidence I will assume that the Nexus S is just a Vibrant with a bigger screen, FFC & LED flash. Pretty much what the Vibrant SHOULD have been on release.
Gingerbread? We’ll all have that in time. Especially on current rooted phones. Faster CPU? Doubtful. Who cares, if my above assumptions are even half correct.
Absolutely not what I would expect from something branded as a Nexus. SAMOLED is nice though. MT4G wins in my book.

That would only hold true if both phones were made by the same manufacturer. Since the N1 was made by HTC and the Nexus S by Samsung all bets are off. For what it's worth this phone could be called anything. Just because it's called Nexus doesn't mean it'll follow up where the N1 left off.

Sidekick 4G

I know everyone has heard of the Sidekick HSPA+/ 4G/ 2011 / whatever they plan on calling it. And I dont know about you but I am EXTREMELY excited. Please tell me your thoughts and what you want to see on it... I know it must be Android 2.3 and have a front camera!

I dont see why not, its a 4G phone like the myTouch 4G, Samsung Vibrant 4G, EVO 4G, Epic 4G, notice how they all have front cameras?

The G2 doesn't have a front facing camera, than again, it isn't called the G2 4G.
Looks like you are right. There is a front facing camera.
The downside being no camera flash (bit strange) and it is running Froyo (than again, it seems like no phones beside the S and the Arc are running Gingerbread).
I like the design of the Sidekick 4G.

Well the Desire-Z is the G2 with Sense. But I definitely agree about the front-facing camera.
Anyways, the Sidekick 4G is made by Samsung. At least we know the target demographic doesn't care about updates

On the bright side, it doesn't have the TouchWiz interface.

Only interesting looking android phone I've seen in some time... might pick one up as a back-back-backup just in case my 3 WP7s blow up at the same time...

Yeah but they better include a 2000 mAh battery. Sidekicks used to have really long battery life because they were always connected to the internet (AIM, etc) with push. Battery life is not Android's forte. I can't wait to see all of the confused ghetto 13 year olds who have no idea how to operate Android.

I am ridiculously excited. I love the Sidekick.
I'm hoping they make a Sidekick Launcher that's like the DangerOS though.

Yeah, I just saw that when I was going through more pictures online. It seems similar enough -- enough to utilize the scroll wheel (scroll... sensor?) on the right.
I think the only thing I miss is the set of numbers that were set-up on the keyboard so that it had a more phone-like feel. (The ones you could dial with, or use ALT to access).

I want to know the dimensions of the Sidekick. It looks pretty thin and I am assuming that they haven't change the screen size much.

I think this post deserves a bump.
I am disappointed that it is a Samsung phone. I'm hoping that maybe Andy Rubin might give it a personal touch I hope. He was one of the original founders of Danger Technologies, INC after all.
I've used Sidekick since the first Color version (SKC) all the way up to the SKLX 09. Then the MicroGate problem occured and I abandoned the platform all together. I must say that even though I wanted the most badass phone I could get at the time; I am seriously displeased with my current Samsung Vibrant. Mostly on the behalf of firmware updates, but also because I used a real keyboard for so long that I still to this day can't stand using a virtual keyboard.
What they need to make this a hit is speed, ease of use, functionality, battery life, OTA updates, and a very snappy responsive keyboard. The last generation keyboard by Sharp wasn't bad and more of the same design would be good.

[Q] HTC Inspire 4G vs Samsung Infuse

Please every one bare with me here, the time has come for me to upgrade to a new phone, although i currently own a Dell Streak and its not bad for what i do, i need a smaller phone but that continues to carry a large screen, therefore i have narrowed it down to the inspire and infuse.
i checked youtube for video comparisons, didnt find any, so im posting a thread here hoping to get good answers. I highly doubt someone has both for any reason, but you never know.
should i jump with either of these two or pass and wait a bit longer for something better?

That said this phone is just awesome, I've tried a captivate for a little bit and that wasn't too bad, but no HTC sense. For me sense is where it is at. Also this phone is going to be heavier than the infuse, its metal. It has a very solid feel to it and at this point I wouldn't trade it for any other phone out there.
Also if you like playing with roms there are prolly, not for sure, but most likely more roms for this phone as it has the desire hd in Europe as an almost exact match.
Of course you could wait for the holiday, but that is going to bee several months away.
HTC is better than Samsung when it comes to cell phones in my opinion.

You're also going to receive input from people biased against Samsung. There are a lot of former Captivate owners here who have a real problem with Samsung and the way they handled the Captivate issues. I happen to be one of them.
I will never buy another Samsung phone.
A pretty screen does not a reliable phone make.
HTC is a better phone. If the HTC Holiday comes out around December, that's the one to get, assuming they make good on their new bootloader policy and it comes unlocked,if you want to wait that long.
Otherwise, an inspire will keep you happy for a long time, and the dev section here is quite robust, as you can tell.

The screen on the Infuse is BARELY bigger than the Inspire but the phone is MUCH larger. Samsung gave it a lot of useless area at the top.
In the 1, or 2 side by side speed NON-SCIENTIFIC tests that I did, the Infuse had faster data transfer speeds.

If i were you i would wait for the galaxy s2 to come to att or somethin better then that. The inspire is really fast but its kinda getting outdated and the gs2 will last you longer.

I would go for Inspire as it has lot of roms. the only downside to it is battery life, but it depends on how u use, there are roms that can improve battery life.

Inspire hands down.. I hate samsung. but thats not the reason..
the infuse is nice. solid body construction.. nice screen.. very thin.. feels nice in hand.. and for me its fast.. and does what i need it to do..
the infuse. not much exp with it outside of messing with a co-workers infuse.. I felt like i could go on a killing spree with that thing. so huge... and felt cheap compared to my inspire..

I have had both and am going back to the inspire with the new Red inspire, the infuse is a ok phone but the big problem was the rooting, the actual rooting was easy but then you had to install a second recovery or e3 recovery in the phone with root explorer and then if you wanted to install a rom you had to use the red recovery instead of the green recovery or you would mess up the phone. Just to many thing to mess with and remember for a simple process. The choice of roms is also worthless and they are not all that great. I would say forget the infuse and get a inspire.

Take it from a former Captivate user. Inspire all the way. I just am not happy with the way Samsung handles issues with phones. Releasing os updates and such. GPS issues on there phones. Froyo took almost a yr to drop to the Captivate. HTC phones on other carriers were getting it much faster.
There is a 50 dollar difference in the price and that 50 bucks is not worth it for just a smidgen better screen. Sense is so much better then touchwiz.
Both communities have good development. I don't think i will be looking at another samsung phone. I'll stay with them for computer lcd's but going to be with htc from here on out.

Got an Infuse the day they came out, Used it for three weeks then traded it in for an Inspire. The 4.5 inch screen was great, since I was used to the big screen of a Streak. downside was weak radios, GSM,Wifi, and 3G. I had no problems with build quality or size. The screen colors were over saturated and sort of cartoonish. My$.02

Yes I did. Edited the post. Had a migraine all day.

i was holding both in my hands, comparing them.
ended up with the inspire.
there was also the $80 difference to consider.
infuse $149 vs. inspire $79 + 15% military discount.
the infuse was jsut too big for my hands,
it felt like a glock double stack 9millimeter made of plastic as comapred the inspire which seems like a 1911 with slim grips all metal feel.

With an upgrade available, the Inspire on AmazonWireless is $0.01 with no (most states) tax. Considering the Infuse is at least $100 everywhere, it became an easy choice for me.

[Q] Evo Shift Pros and Cons

New to this forum (i'm a cdma hero guy)...but, my wife is considering an EVO Shift 4G and theyre selling them for a penny on Amazon (sprint is still asking 99.99...yeah right). Anyway, i've read some things about a lot of people complaining about the performance after the sprint gingerbread update and the physical keyboard having a lot of problems after a while. Are these widespread concerns with this phone? Or, isolated incidents?
Our contract is up and i'm trying to get my wife to switch from blackberry to android and she insists on a physical keyboard....
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Any software problems I had with it were resolved when I rooted and flashed any of the amazingly stable ROMS on this site like MikShifted, Supreme Sense or newSENSE (my personal favorite Atm). As far as the keyboard, I DID have one hardware problem with screen going out after six months... idk. But Sprint was really good about replacing it for free. I most definitely recommend it. I love mine!
If my phone had a leg, I'd totally be humping it right now lol...

My Shift is hands down one of the best devices I've ever owned. Highly underrated, once rooted the Shift is a BEAST. Easily able to match, and sometimes beat the performance of a lot of the devices out there. There are plenty of Great Roms to choose from, once Rooted. Enough to suit anyone's preferences. I've had mine since a day before official release, and absolutely recommend it to anyone .

Yes deffinitly agree with prboy on this phone unless HTC comes out with a new slider me and my shift are in it for the long run. Had mine a few days after release never had any hardware issues with it and would recamend it to anyone

Qwerty keyboards aren't as reliable as a virtual keyboards basically, and with the insane screen real-estate of the 4g, the keyboard is easily comparible to the ease of the Shift.

There are no, none, zip, zilch, zero springs in the shifts keyboard... Evo's suck... My wife has one, nothing you can say will change my mind. If a big screen and crappy outdated hardware is what you're looking for, get an evo... If you want a beast that even after 1 year on the market it is still a relevant device get the shift. And the absolute nonsense about a virtual keyboard trumping a hardware keyboard isn't even worth responding too. Show me an evo that can linpack like this and than we can start talking... And no, I didn't cheat on the score.

Wow. I was under the impression that the 4G would perform a little better....good to hear. Going to the sprint store today, so we'll see what happens (Amazons sale ended, doh!)

I own both an OG EVO, and the EVO Shift. Hands down I'll take the Shift. I can OC higher, it equals or beats my OG EVO on everything. Only give is the screen size. But it's not enough to make me choose it over the Shift ever.

I got mine with that .01 sale through Amazon... I kind of wish I did a little more research and gotten a Photon for $50. Mainly for the dual core processor and longer (larger) battery life. I was sold on the shift for 3 things, QWERTY keyboard, FM Radio & HTC's experience with Android (GF had a G1 when they first came out). The biggest reason for me was the physical keyboard, I had developed a very negative opinion about on screen keyboards from my iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire friends frustrations with predictive text and fat finger phenomenon.
There are other more human elements I have come to enjoy about my Shift. Such as the size, I happened into a radio shack that had a Photon on the display rack and +0.4"w x +0.5h" x -0.13" is a bigger difference than the numbers let on. The screen looked huge and quite lovely, but holding the Motorola in my hand with its relatively thin frame and side button locations made finding ways to hold and use it awkward. With the depth of the Shift it sits well in your hand and the volume control buttons being the only side button lets you find a comfortable way to hold it. I also like the weight of the Shift, it doesn't disappear in my pockets and that helps me keep it safe from harm. At first I was a little put off by the lack of a spring assisted slide, but then agreed with nearly everyone else here that simpler was indeed better in this regard. Best part about a slider phone... I can put a property tag on the backside of the display allowing me to take it into my workplace without some garish chrome sticker glaring at me whenever I'm away from work.
Now some things I do notice that make me regret it. Power, I get maybe 4 - 8hrs out of my battery. I take it off the charger, use it to listen to FM (8hrs) or Streaming Radio(4hrs) for about 4 hours and get it home where it needs to charge. Processing, 800mhz single threaded... now the guys here have done wonderful things with their roms to allow the cpu to hit 1,200mhz but that gets the phone cooking hot as well. It also doesn't get around the fact that it is just a single core when most Android devices now are sporting two, you feel it going between applications. Bouncing between things on a Kindle Fire feels much more responsive with less load times than the Shift. 4G, maybe its my area (PDX) but this phone does not hold onto 4G at all. I've tried it downtown I've tried in the west hills, works great if I don't move but its not something I can leave on (and really you don't want to as battery consumption increases) and expect to still be connected when I pull the phone back out to check on what I told it to do with the 4G. These are not deal breaking issues, for me they really reinforce the devices role as a phone and portable information device; It won't be replacing my desktop, maybe a laptop if I got a bluetooth full size keyboard.

What Rom are you running? What kernel? What recovery? These are all things that are going to effect the performance of your Shift .

For S&G's, Mikshifted-G 2.1 about to put the landscape rosie and inverted clock mods on it. Not as pretty as supremesense or cyanogenmod but I got a good flash going this time apparently and everything seems to be working smoothly.

If you're not already convinced go with the Shift, especially if you don't like virtual keyboards... It's not that I can't use them (I swype when its short or I'm feeling lazy or only wanna use one hand) but they cause too many autocorrect errors and I would rather type out what I wanna have it say than have my phone guess.. They're not that smart yet. The Shift has a second generation Qualcomm processor opposed to the Evo's first, if I remember right the Shift performs the same at 800 Mhz as the Evo at 1 Ghz, this means better battery life. In the end it's about your preferences and what you want in your phone, compare the possibilities and find the best choice for you. That's what I did and I got the Shift. And cuz I hate Samsung

By a lot! Shift oc'able to 1.6-1.8ghz... Evo oc'able to 1.2ghz anything more lock it up... Evos suck

My OG EVO4G will not go any higher than about 1.1gHz no matter what kernel I tried. As for my Shift with almost every Kernel it will easily hit 1.8gHz . All day with no issues

Sweet. We actually bought it last weekend, so I did end up going with the Shift ($49.99 at Best Buy...not bad).
But, now i'm jealous. I think i want to keep it for myself and not let my wife use it. . Just need to figure out which ROM to go with. Stability is probably the biggest thing with her. She doesn't care about OC'ing. But, it'd be nice to get some Sense 3.0+ features like the lockscreen and the ability to swipe notifications out of the way (like i can with aosp 2.3.7 roms on my hero). This stock ROM has launcher redraws and "Loading..." every time you go back to it, it seems.
Haven't rooted yet, but i just need to make sure she doesn't accept any OTA updates before i get a chance. Its not at 2.3.4 and from what I gather, that makes it a bigger pain in the arse.

I enjoy the physical keyboard, so obviously I am biased. But this phone is great. I got mine about two weeks after release and just today, once again, I am amazed at what it can do. The devs working with this phone are still churning out new roms and kernels. It will take a lot to get me to trade this phone in. Thanks again to all the devs that help with the shifty
