It's not Gorilla Glass. HTC doesn't use Gorilla Glass *someone here suggested they did for the MT4G, they didn't*

Well Iguess its not glass, either way cab I still do manufacture warranty or is it only for software

That's some pretty hard carpet you got there. Man up! You dropped it on the floor.
Sorry to hear that.

No if I dropped it on the floor I would of said that, no point in lieing. I have no scratches just a straight line on the the screen

First, i would install some under padding at your place. Second, do you have the $5/mo insurance on the phone? That will help you. I don't know what to say otherwise but I'm truly baffled on how dropping it on carpet busted your phone. Did it bounce off a tall stairwell first "Brady Bunch" style?

did you get the protection plan with the phone. it's 5.99 a month? with that plan you can get a new one no matter what... without it your SOL

It fell from out my pocket while i was siting on my computer chair. I was naturly pissed the fu#% off seeing how it was not that high I have the insurance but it will cost 130 just to replace a cracked screen.. Was wondering if there was a chapter method

Suggestion for you, sine you have 14 days to add insurance do so and report a claim. manufacture warranty will not cover drops.

I know it's not gorilla glass but geez, a drop to the carpet = cracked screen?
How high of a drop? How hard was the carpet?

Wow...that sucks...on carpet none the less. Did you roll over it with your chair?
The reason I ask, is the very day I got it and was at home that evening, I had it on the bar in our kitchen because my daughters were looking at it...they got to messing around and my oldest daughter pushed our youngest. when she fell off the bar stool, she flung her arm and hit my phone off. It flew across the kitchen, bounced off the cabinet door and fell screen down on the ceramic tile floor. The battery door flew off and I completely expected to be making a post like yours for sure...my daughter picked it up, put the battery cover back on and put the phone back on the bar face down. As I was in the middle of cutting chicken, it took me about 5 minutes before I could go look...nothing at all, the phone is in perfect shape, no evidence of a fall at all.
I guess all it takes is one well angled drop to either be the end or the saving grace for any glass screen

Sorry to hear about the drop. Asurion is the 3rd party insurance and it's $4.79/mo on my bill, plus a $150 deductible for physically damaged phones. They'll ship it out to you next day usually.
You can also go back to the Tmo store and plea with them to exchange it. Maybe they can say that they dropped it or something like that. Good luck!

It's Gorilla Carpet! It probably hit where the most weight of the phone had the most impact and made it most vulnerable.

Actually I'm suspicious that your phone's screen had a fracture in it when you got it. No matter what kind of glass it is, it shouldn't have cracked so eaily. That would be my argument to the retention department when I wholeheartedly threaten to cancel subscription for making me pay for a phone that obviously had a flawed screen out of the box. Be firm, honest and be respectful. You just might get a replacement.

Are you sure it is a crack? Are you sure it wasn't there when you got it? I'm not even sure it is possible to crack glass from that height onto carpet without some sort of preexisting defect...

Screw honest, if the fall on Carpet did no exterior damage, go in there tell em there is a crack in the screen. Especially if your in your 14 days and you want a new one.

Having absolutely NO exterior damage might allow you to play innocent and ask for an exchange at the store. If that doesn't work, call retention.

gorilla glass, still dents, first all ways hurts the worst!

Well it finally happened. First time in years I have ever f'ed up the screen on a phone. At work tonight slipped out of my hand and on to the floor and slid about 3 foot face down. I had the shipping screen cover on it (waiting on a real one off Ebay) so i ended up with a very small dent/ding in the screen. Not terribly noticeable but i know its there. HA! So to everyone out there, get a decent screen protector on there ASAP. Dont let the hype fool you, It aint indestructable.

I actually heard LG didn't put Gorilla glass on the G2x but the o2x has it. I don't know if it's true or not but I have read it in a couple places.
Its scratch resistant... Not fall resistant. It can still get scratch if you take a key and deliberately scratch it. They're meaning of scratch resistant is if you take your finger nail and just lightly go over the screen.
Does it really use gorilla glass? Before, my tab got hit by the metal part of a can opener thanks to a stupid classmate of mine, and nothing happened.

According to Corning the Optimus 2X has it so I would think the g2x has it as well

LG product page g2x specifically says Corning Gorilla glass so yes we have it. Sorry about your accident.
At least it's a dent, not broken glass.
just had this happen to me last night, extensive damage to glass, but digitzer and lcd work.
i dont have insurance, so today i decided to call LG mobile phone
customer care at 800-793-8896.
I looked at options to do this myself, but it sounds like that would void my warranty,
which i think ill need later.
They answered the phone quickly and were very professional.
I told the man what happened and he gave me a repair authorization and an address
to ship it to.
When i asked about. costs he said anywhere from $40 to $100 but ill post an update after they contact me. im waiting for my replacement mytouch to come back. before i ship this one out.
I know assurion charges a. deductible of around $130.

Now thats just phone abuse...
Over the years I've trained myself nearly perfectly to never have anything but my phone in my left pocket (I'm left handed) and always have the screen facing my leg to avoid something hitting it from the outside. I learned the only time when I did have keys or something sharper in the same pocket and it left a pretty big scar on the screen protector, luckily not affecting the actual screen.

Metal keys shouldn't do it, but if you had sand or some sort of rock/mineral dusting on the keys, then that could easily scratch. Especially with kids (if you have a sandbox), the sandy fingers are lethal to glass screens if it gets a little pressure. Same with tile floors- that will scratch the glass easily. Metal on glass, not so much unless it is an impact that causes a dent.
Yea I dropped mine for the first time yesterday and luckily it didnt hit the screen but the whole side is choppy now.

[Q] Dropped phone and it cracked the screen...how do I replace the screen digitizer?

There are replacements on Ebay but none come with instructions. Does anyone know how to take it apart and replace the screen?
Look it up on YouTube. I did it on my first EVO, and I must say, it was quite easy. It might be a little different for your device, but if you have even a little technical expertise, it shouldn't be a problem. WORD OF CAUTION, though. There is adhesive under the digitizer/top screen, so use a heat gun, or hair dryer, to loosen it first. It is like a box shape all the way around under the digitizer/top screen in a thin strip.

I haven't found any teardowns online, but it shouldn't be too hard as long as you have patience and be extremely careful. It looks like once the battery cover is off, there are 4 or 5 screws that you'll need to remove. Once that panel is off you should be halfway there. Just be careful because you're now in the belly of the beast. It would also help to take pictures along the way in case you need to know what goes where when re-assembling the phone.

Anything on this Earth can be shattered by different frequencies and impact. Gorilla Glass doesnt break if its from YOU pushing it in and stuff..Not from drops.
Try cnn.cn if they sell the part they'll have a guide.

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant and shatterproof; however it's still glass. Same principal as "Water Resistant" phones or items, you can't submerse them, but you can get them wet.

Slipped out of my hand while getting up off a chair, fell about 2 feet, landed flat on the glass side onto some tile. Heard a pop sound on impact. It shattered the bottom corner.
I've owned several HTC phones with gorilla glass and this is the first time something like this has happened. I think the fact it has a aluminum housing has something to do with it. Plastic housings can flex a little on impact. Aluminum doesn't flex as much and since glass can, it caused the screen to shatter since the energy had nowhere to go.
Definitely getting a Casemate or Otterbox (if they release it) once I get the digitizer replaced.
I've been looking all over for a tear down but no luck yet. I might just have to wing it and try doing it myself with one of the kits on Ebay. I really hate having to go in blind.
Can you not get it replaced on insurance? I feel for you buddy!
Cnn.cn does have them, probably more reliable than ebay. great opportunity to makes the first guide!
I would buy from cnn.cn here.
Unfortunately they do not have a video up yet but seen as they sell the part, and if you buy it from them, you may be able to request it from them. Worth a try.
i know it can break. its just supposed to be harder than normal. i just wanted to know if it was from a "normal" situation or something out of the ordinary.
will definitely get an otterbox as well. if they ever come out with one..
2 feet drop on tile is how i broke my iphone 3g :/
I know it's not the same as our phone but the steps should be close enough. Here's a teardown video that engadget re-posted today of the EVO 3D http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/htc-evo-3d-torn-down-three-dimensional-magic-revealed-video/
I know this thread might be dead but the cracking of the screen happened to me too. I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide or could give me some tips on how to replace the digitizer since I will be attempting to do it myself.
Can you post a pic. Of your broken phone? I would like to see what kind of damage a 2 foot fall made

How is that strange? You DROPPED IT ON THE SCREEN. Of COURSE there will be problems if you drop it on the screen. Everyone has this misunderstanding of what Gorilla Glass is. Gorilla Glass ≠ Bullet Proof. It's still glass, it's just been formulated to scratch less easily then normal glass. If it was a polycarbonate like Lexan and shattered, that would be strange.
Remember kids. It's GLASS.

I didn't mean to come off like a ****. I did read your first post, hence why I quoted it. I guess the comment was taken out of context because it wasn't necessarily directed specifically to you (yes I realize I quoted only your comment). I've just seen too many threads turn into "Gorilla Glass is crap" and "WTF I dropped it and it broke whyyyyyyyyy?"
When you drop/chip glass and it has a small micro-fracture, it may look fine until more pressure is added, and it gives.
Think about a windshield. That tiny little chip that the rock that fell off of the back of that cement mixer you were following on the highway made looks innocent enough, until you hit a pothole and it shatters the glass.
As far as scratches, it only scratches when a material harder than it (diamonds, some keys, quartz particles, sand) rubs it. I just keep mine very protected in my old school G1 sleeve. It fits perfectly in there, and you can order them for $3.65 from Amazon.com ( http://www.amazon.com/T-Mobile-HTC-...EQJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312312354&sr=8-1 ) with free shipping.

I dont want to carry a phone in a pouch...I would rather risk it than to have it ring and be muffled and also hard to get to. Plus I dont see that fitting very well in my pockets with my keys/ciggs/lighter...I already ordered a replacement digitizer for 50 bucks so its not really a huge deal..Mainly I was surprised that it didnt break on impact but only when I decided to wipe off the dirt..Im not saying gorilla glass is trash cause it does a damn good job of not scratching when i throw it in my pocket with keys or coins. Now im just wondering if this replacement will be of the same quality.

That is what I was going to say. Glass will get microfractures from impacts because it is so brittle. I used to fix rock chips on windshields and had an experience where the windshield cracked as soon as I had finished repairing the chip. Big ol' spider crack, lol. All I did was remove the cloth covering the repair so the resin could cure in the sun. But from the pressure the resin injector and the sudden temperature variation with the sun, everything went to hell.
Also, the stronger something becomes, the more brittle it becomes.
But that really sucks. Is it still covered under the warranty? I bet you could repair the cracked screen yourself if there is a tear-apart video on youtube.
My son dropped his today Everything still works but the glass is cracked all over the screen.
Anybody know the price for repair if we send it off to HTC?
Mine has a bunch of micro-scratches, but they're only visible if the screen is off and if you've got a lot of sunlight on it. Gorilla glass is nice.

Hi, im thinking about buying this phone because my Nexus 5 battery is horrible, the Z3 looks so good and the specs are good, however, im seeing lots of people saying that the glass on back or front cracks by itself, can you guys please post if your glass has broke and how long you have owned the phone
I have the original z and Z ultra. Had drop the ZU three times and 7 times on the z.
The ZU has not cracked, but the Z back glass did after falling into concrete, the back glass replacement only cost less that around US30.

had my phone for 4 days, dropped a short distance and it smashed like it'd been hit with a hammer! I definitely wouldn't have bought one if I'd realised! Sony customer experience was AWFUL! They've had the phone longer to fix (by weeks!) than I've had use of it! Back to Iphone for me!
The glass cracking thing is pretty rare and mostly the back glass. I would not worry about that. Its like worrying about the LG G3 cracking near the mic or dust under the M8 front camera module, both of which are also extremely rare. If you dig deep enough you won't be able to buy any phone, including the iPhone 6, which has a high defect replacement/exchange rate at T-Mobile due to the sheer volume of sales of course.

I got the z3. My wife had the iPhone 6 for about 60 hours, dropped it once and the screen was completely shattered. Shards fell out. Every phone can break when you drop it once.
bump
I've dropped mine onto marble tiles from a metre about 4 times and nothing. The glass is fine. All the haters will say it's going to shatter from heat/cold or blowing on it, but it's nonsense.
This phone has a lot more to worry about than cracking. That's one thing I know will not happen.
Seems like the front and back glass are not from 1 manufacturer. Had my phone for a month and noticed several scratches at the back. I think i got this when i put the phone on the laboratory table which was made of ceramic tiles. I carelessly put it and drag it (short distance only) trusting that the glass is strong. The front is pretty strong.dropped the phone several times from my bed to the floor with it's face down and no scratches on the front

Does anyone know how much it costs Sony to replace it? They won't say onnthe phone.
Yeah they won't until they see it just in case there is more than meets the eye. LG did the same to me when I dropped my G2 and screen shattered.
Back on topic, the back can be purchased for between $20-30 so at local repair shop it shouldn't cost more than $40-50 if you want some one to repair it for you.
If you want to do it yourself you will need a heat gun to loosen the glue and a suction cup or guitar pick etc to take out the back panel, also you would need to have glue to put the new one in. I forgot to mention, you have to detach the NFC pad from old panel and put it on the new one.
You better just give it to some one to repair it for $40-50 if you are not willing to do the above.

I am more than comfortable doing it myself. I did it on my Z. I have everything I need including guitar picks. Everything I find basically says that you can't guarantee a water tight case with aftermarket backs. Also if Sony does it, it's water proof again. I just don't know what to expect....$50......$100.....200. If it's a ton than I won't even bother sending it in to find out. I'm wondering if anyone has ever sent in a Z series for back glass?
If you search the forum, I recall someone had it done for $40-50 if I am not mistaken. It will definately will not cost $100, your pushing into display/digitizer assembly territory at that price.
I've had my phone slip off a couch and a tv dinner table onto hardwood floor and each time the phone has been fine. No dents or scratches that I noticed.
Planning to get a cheap back protector so it's not so slippery.
Glass is easy to crack. I accidentally drop my phone from 0.5m high facedown and right bottom corner front LCD was cracked called Sony Center and the price is $250 for the LCD and whole bezel thing. Pain in the A double S
Painful indeed, Corning is advertising their new GG4 as 2x better for impacts, in their ads they show gorillas dropping phones face down lol. I wish we had that.

1 drop = completely dead touchscreen

One of my clients just informed me that a crack on the top left of the touchscreen of his S7 Edge caused the entire touchscreen to be completely inoperable. The entire screen was flickering like crazy. BE WARNED. I have not heard of anything like this before. Touchscreens are usually usable even if the entire screen is cracked.

Duh...
It all depends onthe way the phone falls. There are no proven examples that screen A will always survive because iti s only cracked a little and screen B will go dead at whatever conditions. Only probability and nothing else.
Lol sent from iphone.
Mines dropped and cracked on the back and a slight crack in the corner. touchscreen still works fine ... no worries tho my insurance phone will be here tomorrow yay ???

It's possible on any device. Like mentioned above, chances are that the way it dropped (force, speed, angle, etc) damaged the hardware and that the screen crack as nothing to do with it.
All in all, be careful gents, devices aren't indestructible

So I guess the moral of the story is, don't drop the phone, Of course nobody ever plans on dropping their phone. But if you are trying to say that if you drop the phone then the screen may break, and if the screen breaks then the touchscreen may fail, that's not news to anyone.
mine drop, still got case on...still work fine....lol
Should be more careful.
I once dropped my s7 edge and only once and it stopped working completely. I'll remember next time I'm 30ft up to secure my phone better. Can't believe 1 drop and my phone won't power on geeez Samsung must be making low quality phones now.I BLAME SAMSUNG

Lol, not every single phone will be exactly the same, and the goes for any and all manufacturers of anything. My first S7 Edge I dropped like 5 times at waist height, a few lower, only a few cracks on the back glass and a few dents on metal edges. Not once did the front glass get scratched or dented thankfully. I ended up exchanging it for a new one since I had GSP and the MFG warranty. Granted I preordered mine and the way Best Buy had to do the GSP plans on those pre orders meant no matter what was wrong with my phone I didn't have to pay for a new one. Got an Otterbox Commuter case and my new ones been flawless I love Samsung. I've already swam with it in a 9 ft pool and no problems since. Granted like I said above, any company who makes anything, even electronics will unfortunately have some that can't take as much abuse since these things are mass produced.
what?
-_-
gotta be carefull than using this phone and don't forget to have an insurance for your phone.

My phone slid off a table that was maybe 4 ft high and caught one of the stabilizing bars (that connect table legs) on the way down. Entire screen cracked, mad flickering.
This is a very delicate phone. I have dropped smartphones before (without a case) and this is the first one in my history (starting with the original iPhone!) that got any serious damage from a fall. The other three people I know who own an S7e all cracked theirs in the first 3-4 months too. A case is a definite must.
As someone that works in this field, I lol'd. Its usable if you didnt crack the LCD or Digitizer. For simplicity sake lets say there are three layers, the glass your finger touch, the digitizer right under it, then the LCD. You crack either of the bottom 2 layers, you got a non-working phone. You crack the top glass, put something like tape or tempered glass over it, it'll work just fine.
me 2.. I will pay around 300 euro.
Your phone drop dead,?
You guys are also talking about dropping glass phones. Sure it's technically a plastic glass composite material, but they will crack with enough force. Like I said above, I dropped my first one like 5 times without a case and only got a few cracks on the back glass, the front has hit the ground at waist height several times and it never cracked which really surprised me that the back cracked but not the front. I definitely would get a case. The Otterbox Commuter case is really nice because it's tough but still slim enough for easy entry and removal of your pocket. And yes insurance plans like Best Buy's GSP is definitely a must for this price point.
Same happened to mine, a couple of low drops (1 bounce) with no external damage.
The display turned green and eventually died.
From the way the support centre answered, it seems that they have high numbers of this problem.
