[Q] Droid 2 Global - Droid 2 Global General

Hey so far i haven't been able to find myself an adequate android phone for my first smartphone purchase (I'm an android junky and dev, just never got around to buying one that fit my needs) However now there are a couple contenders on the market. They have to fit t-mobile frequencies (I live in canada, and the only good network is wind which is basically t-mobile) and can't have too many issues. So I've recently stumbled across the spec sheet for the Motorola Droid 2 Global edition and was wondering if it supported t-mobiles frequencies considering the huge amount of radios it already does have.

More than likely it will work. Its a GSM capable phone, soo...yeah. You should check out the Nexus One too, its older but its still hanging up there with all the newest phones.

Yah the nexus one was very interesting and it was the original dev phone, idk i'd rather just be closer to the cutting edge and that 1.2ghz proc plus hardware keyboard really entices me lol

Complete speculation here, but I'd be surprised if it has the 1700/AWS band for 3G. Most 'global' phones have some combination of 850/900/1900/2100. I sure hope it does have AWS though

I messed with a G2 the other day and it was great. Very solid build, excellent keyboard, vanilla Android... not to mention, it already has a massive developer base.

Thats good to hear i heard there were some sketchy things about the build quality of the hinges

I open and closed it several times and it seemed as solid as it needs to be. I think some people might just be too anal.

Hahahahahha Gee I hope i'm not one of those people cuz if i can't get my hands on a n unlocked Droid 2 Global thats my choice

Ha you can't go wrong either way. The Droid 2 is a tank. My only concerns with the Global would be how much compatibility it will have with D2/DX hacks and whether sbfs will be leaked. Development is much more sparse on these new Motos than HTCs like the G2.

Yah i've looked through the forums and htc's seem to attract a lot of dev interest, meh more room for me in the moto department then

I'm pretty sure it won't have AWS. USA/Canada are the only ones who use it, and they have CDMA networks. Why would Verizon need to roam on any AWS network?
According to leaked specs of the Droid Pro, it has UMTS 850/1900/2100
Since its specifications are very similar to the Droid 2 Global, I'm guessing (and hoping) it also has the same bands so that I have the option of buying it and using it on AT&T.
I don't know why they went with these bands for the Pro since Europe uses 900/2100 and the Pro is missing 900. I don't think 900 is very common though, and Australia uses 850MHz so that may be why.

Is it possible and recommendable to buy the prepaid Verizons droid 2 global instead of the full price one, so you save 150 dols, and then unlock it and use it with another GSM carrier outside the US? Or should I buy the ones that are for sale on ebay?

For T-Mobile 3g I would go for the My Touch 4g or the Samsung Vibrant or The Nexus One. The Nexus One is still cutting edge. I have a Nexus One and a Droid 2 Global and the 1.2 processor doesn't really feel different. The Droid 2 Global also has barley any support here and absolutely no roms. I Love my Nexus One and I think it is better than any other smart-phone iv seen. If you want a great phone with amazing support and roms I would go with the Nexus.

Droid 2 GLOBAL - unsuccessful ROOT!
I was able to get a pre-retail Droid 2 Global a few weeks ago.
I wanted to Root is and use the Sapphire ROM. So I tried every ROOT method I could find using my MAC = no avail!
Then I tried every ROOT method I could find using a PC = NO AVAIL! (1-2-3, One click, etc)
* The only thing that happened was the phone got real hot and the program got stuck at "searching for device" - & yes I downloaded the Motorola drivers and the updated SDK pack.
Any thoughts on this?

You need to run the root apps again consecutively not always does it work the first time and all of the apps do the same exploit and there have been Droid 2 Globals that have rooted you just need to stick with it. Also sometimes it helps to reboot your phone after a failed attempt. It just depends on the phone. I remember when root first came for the D2 and we didn't have apps we had to run all the commands from ADB and do it manually.

Still no dice to Root Droid 2 Global
I just got this:

I am going to give it a whirl after I get home from work tonight. Fingers crossed - if this doesn't work, I'm all set with trying to root this thing.

Be VERY careful!!! Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global ROM's are NOT compatible. If you flash Droid 2 rom on D2G, phone will not boot and as there is no SBF available yet, you are looking into expensive paperweight until SBF is released.
BTW - phone is rootable. But refrain from flashing anything before you have way to get out if phone gets bricked. You have been warned.

Thanks for the heads up...
After minimal research, I realized that.
My plan was to flash clockwork recovery? Do you think that won't work?
It will be hard, but I can endure waiting for a "GLOBAL" ROM -
Cheers,

Even if you have a D2 G clockwork regularly won't work because the D2 only has a bootstrapped recovery. I don't have a D2 G but the D2 G is based on the D2 and on the D2 you should only install things with koush's bootstrap. I believe flashing normal clockwork will brick your D2 G. I wouldn't flash anything though before the D2 G's sbf is out. Unless you don't mind an expensive paperweight until then.
For all D2 G owner's: read everyting you can about the way that things are done with the D2 so you will knw what you are doing when ROM's and things come for the D2 Global.

What phone to get for Christmas?

Hey guys,
I currently have a T-Mobile G1 but I think its time to get a new phone . I can pretty much get any phone I want just as long as its on T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T. I only want phones with the Android OS also, and of course be able to root it for a better experience. I have three on my list so far, ranked in order from most wanted to least:
1. Sony Xperia x10 - it seems to be like the greatest phone ever.. 1 GHz processor , but I don't even know when it's coming out so id have to wait until Q1 2010 (that's fine though). Oh and I heard this ships with Android 1.6..hopefully we'd get an update for 2.0+
2. Motorola Droid - pretty good phone too, and it's already out so I'd be able to get it for Christmas.
3. Motorola Cliq - its an okay phone to me but the only reason I would get it is if I have no other options.
Any other Android Phone suggestions? Thanks!
What about Hero?
What about Acer A1 aka Liquid?
I have Acer F1 (same hardware) and I 'm totaly satisfied with it and considering to buy an A1 too.

Oh okay, thanks. Yea.. I don't like the MyTouch 3G.. it's basically the same as my G1 but with no keyboard lol. Yea I'm in the states .
Good luck buying an unlocked phone in the states.
T-Mobile uses its whacky UMTS frequency and AT&T uses 850/1900 ... pretty much all unlocked phones are 900/2100.

AT&T Options?

I am stuck using AT$T as my provider currently. I want another android phone. I have a Moto Droid for work and love it.
Since the backflip is a POS, what other phones can be brought over to AT&T and work with 3G? I saw the progress on the iPhone, but would really rather a physical keyboard.
Thanks
AT&T only has 2 android phones available. The Dell Aero and the Moto Backflip. The Backflip being the one with a hard keyboard. They have HTC listed on their android page, but who knows when/if that will happen. I think I remember reading that they made Bing the default search provider for the Backflip. I don't know AT&T's policy on bringing unlocked phones onto their network, but you could get the international version of the Hero or something similar. I just rooted my Sprint Hero with the Fresh 2.0d ROM and it is like having a new phone. Once all the Sprint bloatware was removed it runs twice as fast. Unfortunately, none of the unlocked android phones support AT&T 3G, so you will be stuck on 2G. For a hard keyboard, your only option is an unlocked Motorola Milestone(newegg is out of stock).
www.google.com/phone
Or get a Rogers Dream or Motorola Milestone from eBay if you want a physical keyboard and 3G on AT&T. Then it's just a matter of unlocking and rooting.
Of course, you need to be careful with Rogers. They have "patched" their Dream in such a way as to require a JTAG to root.

I am pretty sure the Milestone does not support AT&T 3G, only T-Mobile. The unlocked Nexus will support AT&T 3G, except for the minor hardware design problem where if you hold the phone the right way you can block the 3G radio. (See youtube, search "Nexus One 3G Problem")

This is correct, it does support AT&T 3G.
There is also a Nexus 1 designed to work with AT&T's 3G... but of course if you want a physical keyboard, no luck there.

The Dell offering (The "Aero") does not feature a physical keyboard.

[Q] Help me choose a new WinMo/Android phone (CDMA, to be modified for MetroPCS)

Its time for me to find a new phone. Ive gone through three first gen MotoQ over the last few years and this last one is finally starting to fall apart which is quite amazing since it was announced five years ago (if it isnt broke dont fix it, and if it breaks fix it!). I've been a MetroPCS customer going on six years now and have no intention of switching providers
Help me find a phone with the following requirements -
Android OR Windows Mobile 6+
Able to be modified for MetroPCS
A full keyboard (can be a slider, flip or front facing keyboard like the MotoQ)
Price under 200$ new or used
Some nice features to have but not required would be -
Charges through standard mini usb
Extended life batteries (or brand new original batteries) available
Some type of tethering solution (currently i do this through USB)
I don't mind if the phone is old, even a model from four years ago if it works well
I am in the San Francisco bay area (LTE is available)
I often use my MotoQ to send MMS and the Google Maps application even though the speed is very slow (perhaps because of my device?).
Three times I have paid someone to add the "foreign" ESN of my phones into the MetroPCS database so it would be a definite plus (not a requirement) if the phone had the ability to directly take over for my current MotoQ without the extra fees (electronic serial number change).
You dont have to give me all the details on how to hack the phone onto metro, if you give me a model number I will do my own homework.
My girlfriend insists on getting me a phone for my birthday. I think she is tired of seeing me carry around this ratty old phone that no one still uses.
Thanks for your suggestions
Based on all your needs, the best fit would be a Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium). It also runs Android now, as well as WM 6.1/6.5.
I have little experience with CDMA, but from what I understand most devices whether they have a good or a bad ESN can be flashed for any carrier other than the original. I haven't seen any CDMA Rhodiums for sale here on the forums, but you could always try eBay. They're pretty cheap these days too
Good Luck!
Thanks for the quick reply. I will have to look into that model more but so far it does seem to do what I wanted!
I was starting to lean towards the Moto Droid 2. Apparently it is not too difficult to get it functioning properly on MetroPCS and it has decent specs. The price for used models isnt bad and its running 2.2 android stock, with a 2.3.3 hack available

Also true, with the added benefit that if you ever move away from CDMA, you'll have a GSM radio in there too. I can only speak for the original Milestone, but it was a capable little phone at the time. They reworked the keyboard on the second one, so it seems to be much more user-friendly. I'm not sure how much luck they had with the bootloader on it though, so would pay to do some research there before you buy

wana purchase hp palm phone plz suggest which one?

i there
i had gifted him android phone few months back but he dint liked it
he told its complicated for my age
now i want to buy a simple and fluid webos phone for my old father
can u suggest which model should i go for
phone should b fast and fluid
i need a gsm unlocked phone
i need your suggestion
Pre 2 or Pre 3 if u ask me...Pre 3 might work out better because of its larger (and higher res) screen and keyboard. They should both be fluid enough for all tasks.
The Veer is also a good choice; the build quality is excellent, and is still speedy. 4g is also nice. And you can get one for $50 without looking hard. Small screen? Yes. Charger is odd too. But for a basic phone, it works well, and on a Straight Talk bring your own GSM phone, economical.

LOLz - I don't think they have Straight Talk in Bahrain where the OP is from.
Important for you is getting a European model - NOT North American - so that your comm board is compatible with the carriers in Bahrain.
Veer or Pre 3 might be a good choice to get 4G data speeds - but for ease of use with any GSM carrier and a more proven model go with the Factory Unlocked GSM Pre 2... Just my humble opinion.

Just bought my LG G Pro 2 D838

I have just bought my LG G Pro 2 off eBay for £320 from a UK stocked supply so hopefully will be getting it tomorrow. I am on the Three network so 4G should work fine, although the 800 band 4G won't be supported when they roll it out in the rural areas, but I don't mind that. I currently have an iPhone 5S and iPad, and having previously had all android devices I have just never been able to get into the Apple products, I think they are way over rated, so the iPhone and iPad I have are going on eBay next week, and this LG G Pro 2 will be a compromise over having 2 different devices ). I have read so many positive things about the G Pro 2 and they aren't loaded with stupid technology you don't need, and they are cheaper than Samsung phones. I was looking at the Sony Z Ultra as they are selling them for £250 on Expansys, but I felt it was too big, and many reviewers said the screen wasn't bright enough and the battery isn't removable. So what are your opinions for those of you who already have this phone?

Congratulations on your purchase. You're going to love this phone. The screen might be on the bigger side but I find it perfect for reading on the go and playing games. The minimal bezels and the amazing battery life are such a treat to have. and it has a much slimmer profile than I had expected. All the best for using the phone. Hi there everyone the phone arrived today, am very impressed, I think the screen is better than my iPhone 5s which is going on eBay next week lol. It blows my iPad air out of the water too, I have always been disappointed with the display on the iPad air. It reminds me of a TN panel on a budget laptop.
I can see this LG G Pro 2 serving me well, its easy to use and I love the UI, which am surprised about as I normally like vanilla stock android. It just seems to work. I can't believe LG hasn't released this phone in the UK. I think it would do very well as far as phablets go. I'll update more as the day goes on.
I haven't seen any FM radio by the way. If you have unlimited data plan just stream it on one of the many radio streaming sites.

After edit my build.prop swipe is working fine with the LG G3 keyboard. Also G2tweakbox xposed addon works really well on our D838.

Hello all
Does any of you know about the availability of the D837 version in Europe (particularly UK) all I can see on eBay is the D838. My concern is that the D838 only supports 1800 / 2600 on 4G. I am with "Three Mobile" which as I understand mainly uses 800. I can see that the D837 has better frequency support on 2G and 4G which is more useful to me as Three user and also because I travel quite often.
I don't have much information about the F350 model but I can see on eBay being sold from Korea or China (I rather buy from a UK seller), does any one know which frequencies this version supports.
And the last question to the OP (or anyone in a similar situation). I can see that you have bought the D837 and using Three mobile, have you had any issues so far, how does the 4G performs?
Your help would be much appreciated.
LTE bands
I have the F350s, and in the hidden service menu you can choose other LTE bands, and other GSM frequency's then what is listed in the phone spec. For example I'm in the the US on AT&T and LTE band 17 is a option and works great.
this phone is a hidden gem....
I've had my LG G Pro 2 32GB for a couple of months now, it's the best phone I've had since my Sony Xperia Z Ultra 16GB. But now it's time to move on to another device so put it up for sale. It's a shame LG messed up the D83810F update, looking forward to G Pro 3 if LG bother with it.

D837 is rare. i wanted to buy one in HK (the seller advertised it) but it was just a sales tactic to get people in the door. most phones from here will be the F350 or D838.
i use GiffGaff in the UK which is on the O2 network so i'll be on 3G when I come over later this month.
While 3 does use some 800MHz, the official line from them is your device needs to support 1800MHz.
