Hey,
I'm contemplating getting a Sensation in Canada, but I may wait for Rogers to get their new LTE network going before getting a new phone. Would you guys say that the 4G is worth waiting for? Or should I just get the Sensation now?

Wait...and use the money that's obviously burning a hole in your pocket for more prudent things...such as contributing to your 401k...
Nah, but 4g is ok...I see it as a luxury, if you can afford it and you REALLY want it then sure. But whether or not it's worth is is as simple as thinking about how much you really value a few extra seconds between page loads. With bandwith caps, 4g isn't really all that attractive anymore honestly...

Something else to think about, just because they launch LTE won't guarantee that they will have the backhaul to make it fast. Most, if not all, of Sprints WiMAX, Verizon's LTE is slower than 3G simply because they don't have the backhaul or capacity yet.
It took T-Mobile 2 more years after launching UMTS to get HSPA+ going. Food for thought.
hmm.....well put...thanks guys. will have a new Sensation tomorrow
With these prices... its not worth it.

I don't think that was called for.
Definitely not better than EDGE.

4g has no real standards. It's simply the 4th generation of wireless data.

What are you talking about? Did ANYONE in this thread say ANYTHING about T-Mobile and 4G?
Read the post before making idiot responses.
sensation is a solid phone, reminds me of my nexus one that I wish I never traded. Would probably still be using that, instead of the phone path I went through. Pricing of 4g isnt worth it, you can just get internet services at a home. My local carrier is rolling out "4g" and I'm priced for life at $14.99 unlimited text & data. I don't plan on leaving the carrier anytime soon, and my download speeds on average are 3-4mbps, high has been up to 8mbps.
Unless your in a big popular city where they will try to put out the LTE signal and support it I wouldnt worry about it. Everyone I know here (Dallas) on Sprint's 4g and Verizons has sporadic problems with signal and speeds. Its fast when its there but they dont get it much.
T-Mo US's may not be real 4G but they have good coverage (for me) with it and I love the phone so I personally wouldnt wait unless you get some good info on the quality of 4G in your area.

I see just the *slightest* overreaction here.
However, to answer the OP's question: Yes, 4G it's worth it to me. Accessing information no longer takes a brutally long time. I have fewer reasons to take a laptop most of to time. I can have long conversations with my girl or family while browsing these forums or the web in general.
I see download speeds anywhere from 3mbps to 11mbps depending on where I am at the time. This is more that fast enough for me to forget that I am not on Wifi. This is what I have always wanted using a smartphone to be like.

T-Mobile's 4G is HSPA+,isn't it? I am not talking about LTE
HSPA+ is not 4g and neither is the current iteration of verizons LTE.
LTE is still faster than HSPA+ but it drains your battery. I have been getting amazing HSPA+speeds but its in very limited locations (downtown seattle only). 4G is worth it, be it real or fake its much faster than 3g but i kind of like HSPA+ cuz at least its not such a battery hog like LTE.

If your not talking about LTE, then why are you posting in this thread? Yes, T-mobile's network is HSPA+. No one is arguing that. What we do want to know, though, is why you mentioned it? The OP, who lives in Canada, was asking if it was worth getting the Sensation now (which won't be on a 4G network as it's not launched) or waiting for when they launch LTE (in Canada) and buy it on a 4G LTE network.
What does that have to do with T-Mobile NOT being a TRUE 4G network?
Maybe I read it wrong so,,,

Nope, he was talking about LTE 4G in Canada, NOT T-mobile 4G. Still do NOT understand the point of your comment.
EDIT: On a side note of true 4G. NO carrier in the WORLD can claim 4G as 4G is only classed as WiMAX II or LTE Advanced with speeds of 100Mbps. With that said, T-Mobile is not either of those technologies, but they are half way to the speeds which is about 4 times faster than anyone else in the world.

Not relevant to the OP but the ITU actually stated the term 4g may be applied to "LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed."
i DONT reccommend getting rogers 4G, purely for the excessive cost, shakey availability, and the fact that when they do actually launch, its going to be rife with problems...using 3g on my sensation is mroe than fast enough, and really, if you want fast data, just use home internet and access it with logmein from your fone...
i used to be with rogers, but the cost/bandwidth of data just didnt cut it for me...
I currently have a Nexus one on ATT and want to upgrade to the new Nexus S for ATT.
However, i want to know if there are a speed upgrade from the N1 to NS in 3g speed. I would like for a new phone but i will be using up my upgrade. I really don't want to waste it if there isn't much different. I may wait for a SGS2 or Iphone5.
If you are in Houston i would appreciate the info. If not thats cool. I just wanted the comparison from N1 to NS. Thanks.
Edit: I am currently getting 2000-2200mbs down and 1000-1100mbs upload currently. Just wanted a comparison of the 3g speed.

No difference as far as 3g capability. Still 7.2 Max.

Yes i figure that. But hoping that with new technology i also figured that speed of 3g has improved on the nexus s. I was trying to figure out the numbers before i pull the trigger.

I have a T-Mobile Pay As You Go plan so I am wondering if I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and get it unlocked through eBay if I would be able to use it with my T-Mobile SIM card? I don't need the 4G LTE on it as I would just use my wireless Internet if I ever needed to get on the Internet. I use this phone mostly for texting, phone calls, and games. Do not use it for the 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks for any and ALL help!
Oh and if I unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile do I need to root to flash any kernels, etc? Looked for answer to my question but was unable to find an answer.
ATT for the win jaja
Yes you do need a root to flash new kernels
Edit: and yes you can use it with any GSM provider if you get it unlocked hopes this answers your question

Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate it. What kernels would work the best and if I root it can I still get the OTA Official update of ICS when it gets released? I believe there is somewhere that will help me root it correct? THANKS again!
Awesome! Thanks for the info.

Hi, As for my understanding, once you rooted, the OTA will stop working...
Below thread might be helpful for you regarding what is needed to use SR on Tmobile:

I was looking at running the ATT Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile for a friend.
I found out the Captivate would only run at "Edge" speeds on T-Mobile. Not 3G or 4G.
Might want to check to see if it would be the same for the Skyrocket.

You are correct, ATT and tmobile have different bands in which their phones operate, so you will only get EDGE speeds at most. Also to clarify ATT's 3G data operates over 850/1900Mhz spectrum and tmobile 3G operates over 900/2100Mhz so you really can't use 3g/4g at all unless you go with another carrier like Straight Talk where they use tmobiles and ATT's towers so you recieve 3g on your smartphone. Good luck !

WOW! Thank you all for such much information, I LOVE this forum. As for the 3G honestly some may think I am crazy but I honestly don't care about the 3G/4G stuff. I use my phone for talking and texting, I never use the data plan. In fact I just don't have a data plan so it honestly don't matter to me. I just wanted to make sure my phone would be useable without having to root it, change the kernels, etc. to make calls and text family & friends.
So thank you ALL for all your information and taking the time to share it. It is very much appreciated!
The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.

Us skyrockerters had figured this out easy before the note came out. I've been using mine on TMobile 4G since January.
Alias..if all you want is talk and text then you don't have to do anything except unlock the phone and put your Sim card in.

evo 4g lte that just came out on the june 2.. this phone is super sweet!!!!!!!! i loved every evo i have had.. i had the og evo 4g.. then the evo 3d and now the evo 4g lte.. evo 4g lte is killin em!!!!
How much do you think it would be for retail price?
Best Phone Ever!
The Samsung Galaxy S III from Sprint! Solid phone. Will be out soon (idk the real date) I am getting one August 1st!
Yea I saw that I might get the new evo or the S3
definitely the photon 4g
i have a photon 4g through sprint and i love this phone. the tegra 2 processor makes it real nice for gaming(youtube tegra 2 games and ull see why). its a fast phone does everything i want it too and more. i like it much better than the evo or the s3. those phones u wouldnt even be able to use 4g anyway. since sprint is getting 4g lte service, its passing its wimax network on down to virgin mobile and boost mobile. so why get an lte phone when all u can use is 3g with them? the photon 4g is a wimax phone. it will have to be rooted and have the gsm domestically unlocked(guides for all that can be found in the photon 4g development section). i personally recommend this phone, check into it i promise u, u wont be disappointed.
Ok this is just temporary. A few questions that I can't find rock hard answers too. They run on the same network, but I can't get 4g to work. I copied the APN settings from my S2, and that gave me a connection, but its super slow, slower than 3g even. Is there any way to fix this?
Also, would rooting benefit me at all with this phone as far as the connection is concerned? I don't care if I need to root was going to do it anyways.
Thanks in advance for any help!
EDIT: Speeds are 85kbps down and 62kbps up.....lol
You sound new to the phone as I was so ill pass information down to you...if you plan on using T-Mobile on the inspire 4g than your limited to edge/2g unless your in a certain state or city that already has the same frequencies that AT&T are using...in in Tuscaloosa if that helps you understand what I am saying....also with rooting you'll be able to change the radio image which as far as I understand can improve the quality and speed of a connection...its best to go with AT&T and get 4g speeds unless your in a big city....also there's another phone sikiliar to the inspire. It's the European version of this phone, its essentially the same phone...check out the HTC desire HD forum...and to root, I used AAHK...I don't have a direct link but you'll be able to find a few of my threads
