Ok this is just temporary. A few questions that I can't find rock hard answers too. They run on the same network, but I can't get 4g to work. I copied the APN settings from my S2, and that gave me a connection, but its super slow, slower than 3g even. Is there any way to fix this?
Also, would rooting benefit me at all with this phone as far as the connection is concerned? I don't care if I need to root was going to do it anyways.
Thanks in advance for any help!
EDIT: Speeds are 85kbps down and 62kbps up.....lol
You sound new to the phone as I was so ill pass information down to you...if you plan on using T-Mobile on the inspire 4g than your limited to edge/2g unless your in a certain state or city that already has the same frequencies that AT&T are using...in in Tuscaloosa if that helps you understand what I am saying....also with rooting you'll be able to change the radio image which as far as I understand can improve the quality and speed of a connection...its best to go with AT&T and get 4g speeds unless your in a big city....also there's another phone sikiliar to the inspire. It's the European version of this phone, its essentially the same phone...check out the HTC desire HD forum...and to root, I used AAHK...I don't have a direct link but you'll be able to find a few of my threads

after rooting my inspire, i tried putting my friends (t-mobile) SIM card into the phone... the phone worked, but there was no data, there was a "E" in the notification bar, but i do not know what that means...
any idea what the "E" means, and more importantly, how to get the data working??
E means edge...that is data..just really slow data.
Or you know what...I could be wrong, just going about what my vibrant shows.

hmm, i tried opening the browser, but nothing seemed to work... any other ideas, anyone?
E is Edge which is 2G and is really slow compared to 3G. If you have an AT&T Inspire you might have to change the data APNs so that it will work with T-Mobile.
Another thing is that AT&T's 3G and T-Mobile's 3G are different frequencies. So with an AT&T phone on T-Mobile, the best you can get is Edge. Same with T-Mobile phones on AT&T.
Hope this helped... a little.
U will have to input the apn settings. Further then that best u will get will be edge due to differing frequency that tmo uses.

Two posters above are correct, you need the correct apn settings for tmobile. Faced this issue taking my G1 onto At&t's network. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=728949efd681db72&hl=en

No no you will not get anything more than 2g speeds,no matter what apn you use. Att and tmobile use different frequences. Unless the frequency bands match, then its a no go.

Ummm we know if you knew how to read then you would have noticed that I already stated that.

any idea on the t-mobile APNs?? ill give it a shot 2 c if it does anything??
edit: nvm, jes read the post by PhatP, thanks for that link... will give it a shot tomm and report back on the results...
settings>wireless&networks>mobile networks>access point names>menu>new apn>name=t-mobile data>apn=epc.tmobile.com>mmsc=http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc> everything else not set or blank... and it will run on 3g t-mobile will tell you it wont . if there are problems switch to 2g or edge .
see there only some diff between tmo and att just some apns in such
Sounds like everyone here has 3G in their area, I have to travel at least an hour to get 3G, att had made and surpassed over 10 expected dates of when they're going to get it but now they're saying mid-year but my edge speeds have increased greatly over the past few days

I promise you an At&t phone's wireless radio will not be able to utilize Tmo's 3G network. The best you'll get is Edge (2G)
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I under stand the difference in the radios some of this will depend on the sim used there are uicc sim cards a t-mobile 3g in other words I have been able to use 3g on T-Mobile with my captivate it did not always work its worth a try atleast

I'm trying to solve this problem on my girlfriend's phone:
The data speeds are absolutely terrible, I'm talking 100-500 kbps download speed max.
Basically, I've tried CM7 7.0.2 to no avail, tried the speeds fix posted to modify the build.prop, flashed the newest radio and matching RIL..no improved speeds and frequent data drops.
Gave up on CM7 and tried a Sense ROM, Ace Inspired 1.0.1...same problem without the data drops.
It's connected to an HSPA network so I still can't understand why we're seeing data speeds this poor. She came from a non-smartphone data plan before purchasing the HTC Inspire so I'm wondering if AT&T didn't properly set up her upgrade. According to her plan, she's on the 4G data plan. I'm starting to think this is not a user side issue anymore. We're in the Philadelphia suburbs, gonna have to call up AT&T to see if they can fix anything. If anyone can provide any information regarding the problems I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks.
Is there 4g in your area?

If I wasn't clear, I meant the OTA radio.
Check the APN settings. There's a thread here about the right settings for 4G speeds.
+1 it's the APN settings. That issue flustered me for a week until the idea that something is wrong with the way the device handles cellular data caught traction and that APN thread popped up.
I'm having horrible speed in a brick house

Thanks guys. I'll check it tonight too. Speeds were awful even when it was stock and unrooted though.

Same here. The APN settings were wrong by default.
HI all
I just got down a unlocked Inspire 4G and I have only Edge and GPRS for data
cause there are no operator where i live that support the 1900 Band..
I called the Shop they said they have a Captivate and a Samsung Focus and its cheaper and they will refunfd the extra
sooooo I love the Inspire they way it feels and looks...and Sense of-course
but with only 2G speeds, is it really worth to keep it.
or the practical solution is to Return it and Get a Captivate or a Focus??
Please lend me your thoughts to help me decide
Head on over to the RCMIX bliss thread and check out the screenies you'll have no problem deciding what to do.

You will still only get 2g with the other phones as they are both also att phones. So it will be the lesser of the 2 evils
Actually Captivate supports Tri-band 3G so 2100 is a go with that phone...
The Inpire is a Sexy phone but will it be practical to use with Emails and Facebook with just 2G speeds??
im Just asking hee cause idont wanna make the mistake of giving this phone away with out properly thinkin...
As I say buy on your network unless you're prepared to sacrifice certain things ex 3g, hspa and so on

sooo what do you guys think i should do
Will it be practicle to use Inspire
I have WIFI @ home but mostly i wont get access to Wifi..work place have strict WIFI acess policy
will it be hard to use Exchnage mail and Gmail.. i know it will be slow but just asking incase if some one has used it or have knowledge of it..
and FB sync and stuff I can do them at home but Emails are a must have for the road
If they could get you the Desire HD then you would technically have an inspire with the 2100 band.
I asked they said they dont have any left...Sniff sniff
so which one should i go for from these
iphone 3Gs
Captivate
Focus
These are the phones they have right now that fits my price that has 2100
Dude everyone has given you your answer. Its your choice honestly. and since when do you get all up on a cell phone at work anyways. Work first, play later lol. If those other phones support your service, then go ahead and trade out. Imo I use wifi at home and data else where. You will be surprised how many ppl use 2t speeds for facebook, etc. and use wifi at home. Especially with att 2gig cap. your a big bpta, decide your selfSent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Want to trade/sell my inspire to get a different phone... something with around the same specs and screen size. Is a iPhone 3GS better? I need a new phone cause I can't handle the edge connection. I unlokced my ispire for tmobile and that's all I get is edge, I want 3g...
Any ideas or thoughts on good trades...

Yeah go buy an iphone. Oh wait, you will only get edge with it too. If you want 3G data on T-mobile then buy a T-mobile phone. Try this link: http://www.t-mobile.com

You're joking, right?
Seriously though, if you are on T-Mobile, you should be looking for a phone that works on their bands. As far as a trade, I don't know what you could expect to get for an Inspire right now.
I know on cdma theres an app to force 3G on roam and it works pretty good. And there are tweaks for unlocked phones on other networks to force 3G. Is this not possible for GSM?
Sent from my I9300 using XDA
Roaming has NOTHING to do with it. T-mobile has it's own distinct 3G data bands that are different from the rest of the world. If you want 3G on T-mobile, get a T-mobile branded phone. Go to the T-mobile link I gave you and look at the phones and their reviews. And this topic has nothing to do with the Inspire let alone the development of it.
How much are you asking for your inspire?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
We arent your financial advisers haha. best thing wouldl be go to tmobile and find a phone that works on their network. google gsm arena, that will get u a site that lists phone specs and you can compare them. research = key.
I have to agree. If you want 3g then get a tmobile phone. Its hat simple.

I have a T-Mobile Pay As You Go plan so I am wondering if I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and get it unlocked through eBay if I would be able to use it with my T-Mobile SIM card? I don't need the 4G LTE on it as I would just use my wireless Internet if I ever needed to get on the Internet. I use this phone mostly for texting, phone calls, and games. Do not use it for the 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks for any and ALL help!
Oh and if I unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile do I need to root to flash any kernels, etc? Looked for answer to my question but was unable to find an answer.
ATT for the win jaja
Yes you do need a root to flash new kernels
Edit: and yes you can use it with any GSM provider if you get it unlocked hopes this answers your question

Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate it. What kernels would work the best and if I root it can I still get the OTA Official update of ICS when it gets released? I believe there is somewhere that will help me root it correct? THANKS again!
Awesome! Thanks for the info.

Hi, As for my understanding, once you rooted, the OTA will stop working...
Below thread might be helpful for you regarding what is needed to use SR on Tmobile:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507825
I was looking at running the ATT Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile for a friend.
I found out the Captivate would only run at "Edge" speeds on T-Mobile. Not 3G or 4G.
Might want to check to see if it would be the same for the Skyrocket.

You are correct, ATT and tmobile have different bands in which their phones operate, so you will only get EDGE speeds at most. Also to clarify ATT's 3G data operates over 850/1900Mhz spectrum and tmobile 3G operates over 900/2100Mhz so you really can't use 3g/4g at all unless you go with another carrier like Straight Talk where they use tmobiles and ATT's towers so you recieve 3g on your smartphone. Good luck !

WOW! Thank you all for such much information, I LOVE this forum. As for the 3G honestly some may think I am crazy but I honestly don't care about the 3G/4G stuff. I use my phone for talking and texting, I never use the data plan. In fact I just don't have a data plan so it honestly don't matter to me. I just wanted to make sure my phone would be useable without having to root it, change the kernels, etc. to make calls and text family & friends.
So thank you ALL for all your information and taking the time to share it. It is very much appreciated!
The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.

Us skyrockerters had figured this out easy before the note came out. I've been using mine on TMobile 4G since January.
