[Q] Rebuild Laptop and now what to do? - Captivate General

Hi,
I had to rebuild my laptop and Now I have win 7 64 bit. I was earlier rooted and installed Kies successfully. I have following build
Model Number : SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Firmware Version : 2.1-update1
Baseband version : I897UCJF6
Kernen version : 2.6.29
[email protected] #2
Build Number : ECLAIR
I want to install Kies and the ability to sync my phone with the computer. Now I am getting very confused. I see many threads with some new Kies Version. I see the threads with the new rooting and I think new OS build also and it fixed GPS issues?
I also read the new guide for rooting and it says that I will be able to sync up with my iTunes etc..
Can someone please help me in understanding the sequence in which I should update?
Thanks a lot for help.

I'm assuming your phone is still rooted? You would want to update to I897UCJH7. That is the updated 2.1 rom that was originally sent over the air (ota). You would not want to perform the ota update with a rooted phone, however. There is a mini-kies way of installing it. This helped some people with GPS issues, but was not considered a real fix. See here: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=338212

I have never had an iPod or iPhone, so I never used iTunes. I do remember reading that there is an app that can take the place of iTunes, or something like that, but I'm sorry, I don't remember the details. You will be able to install the full version of kies on Windows 7, but you will probably have to download it from the Samsung UK site, or somewhere. (That's different from mini-kies, btw.) Follow the instructions in one of the threads about that. But I don't know from personal experience if you will be able to do the syncing you want.
Can someone please help me in understanding the sequence in which I should update?

Still few questions.

I am rooted. So what is procedure of upgrading in case of I am rooted. Also If I install mini Kies to upgrade, will I be able to install full kies version? Or I do not need full Kies version as the mini kies can take care of syncing the phone with computer?
Last question is related to 2.1. Some people refer to 2.2 also? Is that stable build? or should I wait some more time before upgrade to 2.2? I mean currently upgrade to 2.1 and then wait for some more time to upgrade to 2.2?
Please help

You would not want to perform the ota update while rooted. People who tried it found it borked their phone in some way. But the mini-kies method works with a rooted phone. I'm not even sure AT&T is still pushing out the ota anyway.

I don't really know. Never had mini-kies installed. I updated to JH7 by installing Cognition. I'm currently running Cognition 2.1.6. If you use mini-kies to install the update, you can presumably uninstall it, just like any other windows program, after you complete the update and before you install the full kies version.

2.1 Eclair is stable. 2.2 Froyo is not officially released as yet. A 2.2 version was leaked about a month or so ago, but it must be considered a beta version. There are bugs and other issues still not resolved. However, there are several roms available based on the leaked version of 2.2, and at least one based on a more recent leaked version. Hundreds of people are running some version of Froyo. You just have to decided if the bugs and issues are a problem for you vs whether you need / want the new features. As I said, I'm still running eclair (cognition 2.1.6) and will wait until after the official 2.2 release to upgrade.

General root question

Hi there,
its maybe a stupid question, but what the hell...
..when you update your sofware. from 1.6 to 2.1 or 2.1 to 2.2
do you have to root your device again? or does it stay rootted?
and do you also have to reinstall all your files again or not?
thanks
I was wondering something similar. I was wondering that if I root my Vibrant now, will I have problems when t-mobile pushes the 2.2 update?
If I wont ill root my phone, if i will ill leave it alone until the 2.2 push

If you are already rooted and updating the ROM version, you will NOT loose root. As long as you keep with the custom built ROMs, you'll stay rooted.
If the ROM requires a wipe, then you will loose all your files. There are ROMs that are no-wipe, which allow you to upgrade to the newer version without having to reset your phone.

Do NOT download the T-Mobile 2.2 update if you receive it on your phone. You'll more than likely loose root.
Either download the custom built ROM (not sure if the Vibrant has) or stick with your current version.
thanks for clearing this up...

im not rooted now so its no big deal. however once it pushed ill just root it then and call it done.
I'm not 100% but I think everyone who did the OTA update to 2.2 are now finding that all the rooting tutorials are for 2.1 and cannot root until updated tutorials make their way out. With that said, I would root now while you're still on 2.1 and completely avoid your stock OTA 2.2 update. You'll be able to still update to 2.2 but it will be on a custom rom... win-win.

I have a motorola droid, just updated to the froyo 2.2 OTA. Rooted it easily with UniversalAndroot.apk.
i had rooted my galaxy S
and my device can't go into the download mode
because of the software/ hardware problem ( 3button can't use)
can i fresh a new rom without download mode?'

[Q] Nexus One OTA Question

Hello guys,
I have a stock Nexus One that received two updates, the first one was 2.2 which updated since the first boot, and the second one is the 2.2.1 (FRG83D). Now Google started the 2.3 OTA roll out (see http://bit.ly/hUlpUy) but I didn't get yet the 2.2.2 update yet. Will my phone accept the 2.3 one even if I didn't update to 2.2.2 yet?
Thanks in advance!
Was your phone bought directly from Google or through a carrier? The only phones that i know of that haven't received 2.2.2 yet are the ones tied to carriers like Vodafone, and if that is the case you'd have a long wait to receive 2.3.3 anyway.
Well yes. I bought it from Vodafone Italy. I understand, but it would update anyways right? Even if I would wait a little longer I mean? And will it have to update first to 2.2.2 or it just can jump to 2.3.3?
Thanks for your response.
And by the way it is not locked to vodafone (branded). It's unlocked.
Type *#*#checkin#*#* into the dialer. Your phone will then force check for the update.
More info here
Yeah I do this every now and then
I also have the Nexus One which in the end came from Vodafone! (However much i regret this now) So I am also still on 2.2.1 waiting for Vodafone to still push 2.2.2!
I have attempted to flash 2.2.2 to my phone using ClockWorkMod etc but that didn't work out and it ended up just looping the Nexus logo on startup so had to recover it all, I attempted that a few times as well but with no luck! So in the end I still have the carrier version of stock android!
I'm hoping that someone on here manages to source the Nexus One 2.3.3 OTA file from the Google servers and can whack up some instructions on how we can flash that over because I'm sick of waiting on Vodafone! Will it be possible for me to go from 2.2.1 straight to 2.3.3? Or do I have to get 2.2.2?
I don't think anyone has received the Nexus One 2.3.3 OTA yet so whether Google have actually put it up for release yet is another thing!
The OTA is not pushed by Vodafone. I've bought my N1 from Italy (vodafone) and I use it in Egypt, and I could receive all the previous OTAs without any issue. Now my question was simple. Do I have to update to the versions before 2.3.3 or it can just update from 2.2.1 to 2.3.3? (note there are 3 versions in the middle).
Thanks.
You guys have lots of options and should really come post in the Nexus One section of the forum.
If you are on Vodafone firmware phones, and hitting up *#*#checkin#*#* daily, then you are going to wear out your device before Voda actually gets around to releasing the OTA!
I imagine that Voda will either OTA 2.2.2 sometime and then 2.3.3 later, or will skip 2.2.2 and find a way to roll it into the 2.3.3 update later. There's also the possibility that they never intend to update the Nexus One again. After all there's not much profit in it for them as Nexus users make up a tiny percentage of their customers. My advice would be to go custom.
Options include Rooting and flashing a stock, non-voda firmware, which fails for a lot of people (including me), or flashing a custom/stock 2.2.2 (which worked for me) which will then allow future OTA direct from Google, or go the custom route and flash a CM7 ROM so that you never have to worry about OTA again
Thanks DirkGently1 for the info. I would like to do the same thing you did with your phone (flashing a stock 2.2.2) so I could get OTAs directly from google?
Thanks in advance!
I would also like to receive my OTA's from Google, I have attempted the flashing of a stock 2.2.2 ROM which is what failed for me, maybe this is the same non vodafone firmware you've just mentioned which didn't work for you?
Any instructions and files as to how you managed to flash yours to 2.2.2 to get updates from Google?

All the usual stock ROM/passimg.zip methods failed for me. Either installing the OTA to get updated to the most recent build, or updating manually, would fail. So i used THIS ROM which is a stock, rooted, 2.2.2 that will be able to receive OTA direct from Google.
If you can't install that for some reason then you probably can't install any ROM using the normal methods. In that case your only option would be to unlock your Bootloader and use Fastboot. HTC always seems to honour warranties regardless so i wouldn't let that worry you.
I guess I'll have to root my 2.2.1 Rom before being able to flash it with the rom you suggested...

What method did you try? For me SuperOneClick works like a champ as long as 1) Your device drivers are installed properly on your pc* and 2) You enable USB Debugging and then turn off the phone/plug in to pc/start SOC and select 'Root'/Turn phone back on when you see the 'waiting for device..' prompt/wait until completed.
*Nexus one driver pack can be found around here somewhere. I believe they came from the SDK.

Please help a newbie (install Android Market 2.3.6)

I did a factory reset on my Samsung Moment (stock DJ07), but now Android Market is not updating to version 2.3.6. I've searched the forums and downloaded every APK with version 2.3.6. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to install the files using ASTRO, which I know works because I was able to install 2.3.4.
I'd like to ask anybody who has an untouched, signed, stock version of the 2.3.6 Android Market that will work with 2.1 (Eclair) to please provide me with a link to download it. I'm not interested in rooting this phone.
Thanks in advance.
you won't be able to do much without rooting, and it might also be that because you are on eclair that might be the latest version available to you

A stock phone can install programs from unknown sources if the option is enabled. Since that's all I want to do, I don't need to root.

I've heard of people with HTC Heros getting the 2.3.6 update, but I don't know why the versions floating around won't work on my phone.
What we're trying to tell you is that having the phone rooted makes it that much easier to troubleshoot problems like the one you're experiencing. For example, if I'm purposely replacing my market apk with a different one, I usually uninstall, and then push the new version to the system folder using ADB. Astro only SOMETIMES works when installing apk's, even with unknown sources checked.
ASTRO installed version 2.3.4 without problems, as well as version 2.2.7 when it came out.
I wasn't aware that rooting my phone was necessary to get help here. Thanks anyway.

[Q] Resume Receiving OTA

Most of the ROMs described as "stock" seem to refer to including all bloat, but also are deodexed and rooted - obviously not stock in that regard.
Do "stock" ROMS have the ability to receive OTA or Kies updates? I'm not sure why I'd want to, but I want to better understand my options. I guess once (if ?) GB comes out from Samsung/T-Mobile, I want to try it, before going back to Valhalla or some other better ROM - just to be familiar with the baseline.
Thanks in advance.

There are only a few stock ROMs that I've seen on here that are true stock (all bloat, no root, not deodexed).
Yes, if Samsung releases a ROM you can receive it via OTA or over Kies; I've done both. So you have either option.
If you're really looking for a true stock rom, I believe there's a KC1 ROM either mentioned in the bible or in the developer's forum. Once you use that, you're total stock & would be able to upgrade to KD1 using either OTA or Kies, just to test it.

I installed the KC1 in the bible. It is deodexed and has busybox, but isn't rooted. Kies doesn't seem to work (I assume, based on the screen below), OTA, well how do I know if that works unless it works .
D'Oh - this phone was a replacement, and I never registered it. Would that prevent Kies from working? I'll try that next.
I guess I just want to know how come back into the T-Mobile support fold if I ever wanted to, though I'm not sure why I'd want to.
Yeah, I had to register mine after it was replaced to get Kies to work. There's a stock KC1 out there...give me a minute. I really should bookmark that. LOL
I registered, but that may take some to process. I did find this ("factory" KB5):
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/669-odin-rom-stock-image-kb5-with-root-for-the-galaxy-s-4g/
Maybe that will do the trick?
Seems I can't find it either. From what I've read, though, you can flash this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836) then use SuperOneClick to unroot it. After that, you can probably use Kies or OTA to update it to the latest official release.
---------- Post added at 01:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------
LOL, same file as the one I was pointing you to. Let me know how it goes.
Much closer now.
1) Odined KB5-Custom
2) SuperOneClick to remove root
3) Kies sees there's an upgrade, but fails with "Handle:1836730, x:692, y:287, width 537, height:466"
4) OTA says no firmware, but I don't have cell service at the house, will "come off the mountain" later today.

Great to hear it. Not sure about the Kies error, man, but once you have service you should be able to receive the OTA.
If not, you can always download a stock KD1 that's rooted and use SuperOneClick to unroot it, too.
Good luck
I think you could also Odin RaverX3X's KC1 and do an OTA update with that.
I never got anything OTA (only waited 12 hours). I got Kies working on 32-bit XP (my machine is 64-bit Win7, and I read there are problems, specifically with IE9 installed, for some reason).
Let's see how long I can stand stock. Maybe until an official GB release comes? LOL.

I'm running Kies on Win7 64-bit with no problem & have IE 9 installed. Just to verify I launched it a second ago and it reached out and updated itself to version 1.0.0.11051_4. Who knows what the problem is?
When you did Kies on the XP machine did it update you to KD1?

[Q] Unrooted, restored G2X 2.2.2 not updating to Gingerbread

So, I'm having a rather unique problem with my t-mobile G2X that I can't seem to find the answer to. The closest I could find is this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478549
yet following the instructions given to be giving me no success.
A while back, before the Over the Air update to 2.3.3 rolled out, I decided to root my phone. I'm not too sure about the exact method I used, but I recall attempting to use SuperOneClick unsuccessfully. It kept prompting me to install ADB drivers, followed by hanging on some steps and never actually rooting successfully. This occurred over on multiple computers.
So, having followed this tutorial:
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/23/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2x/
the current state of my phone is:
Code:
Model Number:
LG-P999
Android Version:
2.2.2
Baseband Version:
M6600A-SCAUTNZ-2.0.9720T 1 -JUL 15 2011 10:00:00] MP:TRULGE_08.09.02R_MDM
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
Build number:
FRG83G
Software Version:
LG-P999-V10f
Every time I try to Software Update Check, I get the following message:
"Current version is the latest version."
I know for a fact 2.2.2 is not the latest version, as 2.3.3 rolled out over the air on July 25th of last year.
I should note that the unrooting process made use of SuperOneClick and as just like before, it gave me problems and hung on some steps, freezing and requiring a force close. I'm unsure if it successfully unrooted my phone without leaving any strange remnants anywhere!
Is there any way for me to get my (presumably) unrooted 2.2.2 G2X into a state where it will successfully update to 2.3.3, completely unrooted? (Preferably without the use of SuperOneClick, as it's been giving me serious problems.)
Thanks

LG Updator (B2CAppSetup_3.exe I assume) gives me the following when it auto-checks the version, and when I attempt to run recovery:
"The Cell phone is the latest version already. So you don't need to update."
As for rooting with nvFlash, what good will that do if I may ask? Is there a reason I should be rooted? My goal is to have an unrooted device, able to update to the latest version of the firmware; basically something I could hand to T-Mobile without anything looking suspicious.
Thanks again!

You dont have to root to use CWM. You can have an unrooted device and still install custom Roms like stock GB or Tsugi/Bionix, but all you have to do is change the recovery. No rooting needed
Is there a reference I can use to learn how to do that? There's tons of CWN tutorials, but I wouldn't know which one to follow and I don't want to risk screwing up my phone any worse! From what I'm gathering, I'd imagine what I'd need to do is get the stock T-Mobile G2X rom and flash it to my phone?
Thanks dudes
check out tgagunmans nvflash cwm thread in dev section, easy instructions.

ALRIGHT! So. After some painful trouble shooting, going through TGA_Gunman's NVflash thread and putting pieces together, I've managed to get my phone into an unrooted state with 2.3.3. What I had to do was install the APX drivers and follow the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17258229
I would like to bring up a couple of concerns I have.
The phone has stock recovery, and has had 2.3.3 flashed onto it via the batch script in the thread above. My concern with this is, when I got the phone it was on 2.2.2 and eventually got the Over the Air update. If I were to take this phone to T-Mo, would there be anything suspicious they could find?
And lastly, I'd like to ask if the process listed in the thread above would be considered "Flashing a rom." I'm a bit naive on the subject, and would like some confirmation.
Thanks so much for your patience guys! Hopefully my phone's back in an acceptable state! Who knows, I may experiment with more roms and hacks in the future ;}
Thanks again!
If you think they'll be suspicious, and you have insurance, take a hammer to it.
Since they aren't stocking G2x's anymore and they probably won't have any in stock, you'll probably get a nice new Galaxy S 4G! Oh joy!
But seriously, don't do that. I don't think they should have any reason to be suspicious, but I'm no expert.
When I switched out my Samsung Vibrant out about 4 months ago, all the Rep did was look for the Superuser app. Since I didnt have one (I had flashed back to stock, but you can hide/uninstall the app) I was handed my new Vibrant. Till I again broke it recently. Glad to be on the G2X though.
If you want a close to stock ROM, I suggest Bionic Reloaded v3 as its based off of the OTA 2.3.3, and is the most stable ROM available to us, and probably will be, as its based on the official release. Hope this helps.
Sent from my LG G2X using the XDA App while in the office. Take that!
