sorry if this has been mentioned (can't find it anywhere), will winpho7 get swype?
from everything I have heard right now...no. But hopefully it will in the future, (probably so long as they skin it to stay with the UI theme)

Isn't the question actually 'will there be a version of Swype made for WP7?'
So I'd look at the Swype forums to see what they say...
I have emailed Swype about win 7, but all I got back was that it is in development. But that could be only talk now. It won't happen until Mango anyway. Because in it's current environment you can't change the keyboard.
I really hope Swype will come to Windows Phone 7 soon.
The current default WP7 keyboard is ok, but seriously it is terribly outdated to be obliged to type one letter after the other.
I really hope the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft will help WP7 users to have SWYPE back to their Windows devices...
I used Swype on my HD2 and loved it.
See here:

ms have put in alot of effort in the current KB in WP7 and i dont think they will have 3rd party KB in there...

As I already say, typing letter by letter is terribly outdated.
It's also terribly slow. People used to Swype can write twice or 3 times faster than with the default keyboard.
Sorry, but depite the MS efforts you mention, the WP7 keyboard is based on an old input technology.
I am now really fed up with all the WP7 limitations. I hope the Nokia wp7 phone will come with SWYPE.
Peroinsally i odnt htink they need a new KB, they have the best one at the moment, I used skype on my s2 and its not that great, fast typing but sometimes annoying that they get the wrong word.

Hey, I've searched all over and couldn't find anything on this (maybe it was in a way older post) but I was wondering if it was at all possible to hack/port the keyboard on the iphone over to an android phone? Has anyone tried this? Is it just plain impossible, if so what are the obstacles? Any insight would help, thanks!
I don't think anyone has tried doing so. The HTC_IME keyboard is kinda close to it. Im not sure what would be the point, there is a lot of replacement keyboards out there like Better Keyboard which is skinnable. Also, the iphone has a wider screen than most android phones(I think even wider than that of the nexus one), which makes using a virtual keyboard in portrait mode easier.

I'm not really sure what you're asking here. Do you want the look of the iPhone's keypad or the spelling correction engine? It's impossible to "port" either over, you'd have to write an IME for Android which imitates the iPhone's keypad.
To be honest I'm confused why you'd want either. Having used both iPhone OS and Android for a long time I find the iPhone's IME a pain in the ass to use over HTC's IME for Android which is excellent.
Yes the iPhone does have a slightly wider (and taller) screen than most android phones because it's screen is 3.5" compared to 3.1/3.2 used by most Android phones. The only Android phones with screens taller and wider are the DROID/Milestone and Nexus One (AFAIK).

this annoys me. why do android fans like to get defensive when someone likes certain features of the iphone & want it on their android phone. don't tell them to buy an iphone, obviously they would have bought one of that's what they wanted. the iphone keyboard is actually much much better than the default android keyboard & everyone who's used the iphone keyboard knows that.

I doubt he was referring to the default keyboard. Everyone knows that the default sucks (except for the voice input, but that is available on many 3rd-party keyboards as well).
As for the initial question: No, you cannot port it over. Not without the source code and alot of time, anyways. There are a few skinnable keyboards on the market which include an iPhone skin. The HTC_IME is free and already looks alot like the iPhone keyboard. There is also a modified version which works with more languages here.
Which keyboard do you prefer and why? Also what Android phone do you use it on?
So far... Swype has no competition from those I've used. After only a day, my texting was slightly improved. With practice, I can see myself being an absolute menace.
Hopefully I'll be testing http://www.swiftkey.net/ ... But for now, it's most definitely Swype.
Apple bluetooth keyboard or my little targus
I'm hoping to test that out swift keyboard as well.
Swype owns all other on screen keyboards so far.
Swype for now, but I may give the HTC_IME a try. Everybody I show the Swype keyboard thinks it is awesome.
is HTC_IME the only one with T9 ?
Even after trying out the high res version of the htc ime from the desire, I still type faster and more accurately with swype. I will be glad when they release a more official keyboard. I have used pretty much every keyboard, better keyboard, smart keyboard, low res htc ime, high res htc ime, shapewriter (still think swype does it better), stock (obviously), and none of them in either landscape or portrait are faster for me then swype in portrait.
Also I will be giving swift key a try out once they release their alpha app.
htc ime and better keyboard both have a T9 keyboard, but the htc ime has a better dictionary to go with it making it faster to type with in T9.
Swype was ok, but unusable in landscape which ultimately slowed me down if I had both hands available. The new HDPI HTC_IME from the Desire is perfect, and absolutely none of the lag from the old 1.6 version. I love it and I'm using it with compact QWERTY for portrait version.
swype is the best one taking that it's just a beta now!
hmmm... official over unofficial beta
So I'm going to have to go with ShapeWriter. I tried the Swype, but then decided that ShapeWriter would be a better idea at least for now since Swype is in some type of private beta, and not officially released, so ShapeWriter will be the one getting the official, public updates. And so far I'm typing MUCH faster even though I still am not so great at it... that's my humble opinion =)

I was using Shapewriter over swype for one reason only; the resolution fit the nexus one and looks better. But i find swype to do a better job of knowing what word i want and seems to be smoother even in a pre beta stage. I need to get a high res HTC_IME
Swype in portrait all the way. I can hammer out sentences in seconds. I don't like landscape mode for any keyboard, as it blocks out the webpage or text string I'm on.

Guys, Im looking for a little advise. I text a lot so im not a rookie at it. I feel that I can type faster with smart keyboard than with swype even though I really like swype.
I have been using swype for a week, but i do not feel as fast on it as I do on Smart keyboard. Any advise or should I just time my self with a few sentences?
Play with the speed vs accuracy settings.
Give it a few weeks, (i know that's a loooong time) but I started with shapewriter since I got the phone, and now swype is killer.
I love Swype - but unfortunately it's not multi-lingual - so I need to use the less pretty slideIT instead...
why are people preferring the HTC_IME? Is it because of T9 or something else?
Like the htc_ime especially since we have the hi res version now.
I wish CooTek would release a TouchPal for our device. Loved it on the G1, but ends up around 1/2 the size on the Nexus.
$20.00 to anyone who successfully sizes TouchPal 1.1 for the N1.
PM me if you need the .apk

after a few days of playing around with android on my hd2, ive got to say im extremely impressed. both with the developers who made it and with the OS itself. however, after all is said and done ive also come to appreciate windows mobile alot too. it may not be super flashy, but it is by far the most functional OS on the planet.
im switching back to windows mobile, perhaps permanently. there are however a few things im going to miss about android.
1) the keyboard. i remembered the good old days of my iphone (which i could only stand for abt 2 weeks) when i wasnt afraid of typing long documents and facebook msgs.. the only difference i see between the android keyboard and the hd2 keyboard is the lack of the arrow keys in the android.. which makes it SO much better..
2) the browser.. both the default and skyfire are probably lightyears ahead of windows mobile browsers. and that really hurts to say.. they were fast, supported flash better, got stuck less.. all on an experimental android rom that still isnt finalised!
my point is.. is it possible to get the android keyboard/browser working in my hd2? if not, the keyboard atleast should be very easy to develop. you would start out with the normal hd2 keyboard and take out the stupid arrow keys and make all the other keys bigger and more android/iphone like and voila!
the hd2 is an amazing phone, WITH an AMAZING OS, but these few setbacks are the one that matter to the first time user, which in my opinion are why windows mobile is less popular..
can someone please help me out?

I was thinking about asking for a winmo version of an android keyboard, tis fantastic, so +1 for that
very interesting, I missed Opera mobile browser and touchpal keyboard when I switch to android...
i just got a htc trophy my first wp7 phone. i always own a iphone, what i realise is the keypad for wp7 is really hard to type in comparasion to ios. its the spacing between letters across and especially between each row. i keep touching the top or bottom of the other letter i try to touch. so is there any tweaks or way to change the keypad looks so the spacing are wider? especially between the rows.
Keep using it, it'll get easier. I think it's just about adjusting...

I can barely type a consistent sentence on an iPhone, whereas I fly with WP7. You'll get used to it. Not to mention, WP7's auto-correct is much better than iOS.
And no, there is no way to change the keyboard.

+1 ....Away better typing in wp7 than iOS or Android
Yea the wp7 is the best keyboard I've ever used. The autocorrect works perfectly. Just keep typing and if you make a mistake you can doubletap the word and it will show you suggestions or you can retype. This alone makes the wp7 keyboard vastly superior to ios.

I know everyone has their own opinions about various phone features, but the Windows Phone keyboard is so much easier to use than iPhone's. Not sure how someone could not feel that way. I'm not convinced that there would really be any sort of learning curve for it either.
i know this doesn't address the op's question, but i have to agree .. this keyboard is the best of any touchscreen phone that i've used, which includes numerous androids, iphone, etc ... it's so good , for me anyway, that i switched over from my iphone just because of frustrations with the ios keyboard.
I couldn't find Swype available in the Marketplace. Is it available or in the works? I really like the thought of it seeing it on Android phones.

Thanks. Looks like reviews are terrible for it though. Sigh.
I used to have it on my WinMo HD2. It was more of a gimmick to me, but some people like it. I think google or someone bought the company out & made it android exclusive. I could be wrong though....

Skype did get bought, but not by Google. The problem is the WP7 doesn't officially support third-party SIPs, so Swype didn't make one for the platform. Apple has the same restriction. It's not that Swype has become Google-exclusive officially, it's just that there's no other smartphone platforms left.

Would third-party SIPs (such as Swype) be usable with a custom ROM or root access?
It's really hard to completely change wp7 standard keyboard to other. That's why even now there's standard keyboard in custom roms.
Well, you'd have to replace the keyboard binary with a different one that supports the same interface. This could be done in a custom ROM, I suspect - Swype may even be drop-in replacable, since it was meant to run on WinMo and some of the lower level stuff on WP7 has a fair bit in common with WinMo (even if the kernel is very different). I'm not a chef, though, and don't know the tricks and difficulties of ROM cooking.
Allthough I desperately hope for something like swype on WP I'd rather not have the winmo port as that was terrible. I hope there will be some real development sometime.

Install as non market app.
It has an ICS version too.
Its brilliant. The best keyboard bar none!

Yea well, on android, I'd agree, but... This is WP. And I was trying to say that the android-to-winmo port wasn't good, so I don't think an android to WP port would have much more success.
