Users are reporting they can now get an OFFICIAL update to Android 2.2 through Samsung Kies for their Galaxy S I9000's if they live in certain countries. This probably means that AT&T's Captivate update shouldn't be more than a month away. It seems likely we'll get an update pretty soon.

I am optimistic as past releases said GPS enhancements - never the word "fix".
Keeping fingers crossed, hopefully we will here some results soon. Also curious if this JPM build is identical to the one on Samsung Firmwares.
EDIT: Although the disappointing thing is the official announcement does NOT list any fixes at all.

But who called it a fix? Was it briefmobile.com? If that's the case then it's meaningless. Is there a release note from Samsung somewhere that calls it a 'GPS fix'?
When I called last week prior to my getting the Captivate,I was told the GPS would be fixed with the release of Froyo. That's one of the reasons I went with this phone. This falls directly in line with what I was told. I am hoping it won't be long till it is released.

Yep - that is my point exactly.......
The list looks more like a self-compiled enhancement list from early adopters on the XDA galaxy S forum. I don't see Samsung announcing "Darker menu theme, navy blue color" in any release notes.

Not like they would tell you what you want to hear to sell a phone.
I take all these posts with a grain of salt. I'll believe it when I see it. And when DG can get ahold of the source and make it really run.

That is my point... the release is official - but nothing is mentioned in regards to fixes - especially a GPS fix.
The words "GPS Fix" should be on an official release somewhere.... guess i have to hit up the other forums and see what the Galaxy S users think.

I'm curious..Why should there be anything official about a gps fix for this release ? Is there a problem with it already ? As far as I know..2.2 is a completely different build and not a add on of 2.1. The performance increases, new items and all the "fixes" should be inclusive. We will just have to wait and see what is being said as more people get it.

I'm just going to look for some reviews from users who actually have the update. Not much out there yet. I can't tell if GPS is not so broken on the other models or they just don't care as much...

Well, I ran across this little tibit in my relentless search for more information on the timeline for Froyo on this line...
Earlier, I posted a thread about another rumor I found on the net indicating AT&T & T-Mobile would get Froyo by mid-October. Reading between the lines of these two tibits, and considering the impending loss of exclusivity of the iPhone for AT&T, we might just get Froyo even before the I9000. I know, that doesn't make sense when you consider how many builds ahead the I9000 appears to be over Cappy, but who knows if that really is the case. Moreover, AT&T really needs this phone to work right as it is, at the present time, their best Android offering. Sure would be nice if this ends up being the case.

NO! Vibrant JI6 is a 2.1 (confirmed in forum posts) - always has been. A version number for one phone means nothing to another phone. It is really just a date stamp.

Just read this article:
http://androidandme.com/2010/11/pho...-s-phones-will-not-see-android-2-2-till-2011/
The Captivate is seriously the best phone I have ever owned and I purchased it the first day it became available. Now I think I should have waited a few months before shelling out $499.99. But I am getting really disappointed with Samsung and just want to sell it soon. If this is JUST 2.2, imagine Gingerbread or Honeycomb? I know that I don't have to wait for the official releases, as I'm running DG's 9.1.3 ROM, but just this lack of support from Samsung AGAIN is annoying. On top of the lack of timely software support we still have the GPS issue. I did almost all of the tricks in these forums and the GPS works when it wants to. I have to have it work all the time. I'm thinking of when these new dual-core phones come out in the coming months of just selling my beloved Captivate and getting something else that's not made by Samsung-- as the only thing I will truly miss will be the screen. At this point Samsung might as well just skip 2.2 and go straight to 2.3 but we know they won't do that. Hopefully the Nexus S turns out to have fewer issues. /rant
Who is the "we" you are referring too? I guess you are a canadian fascinate owner as that is the only model that was stated for a 2011 update to 2.2.
Seriously, you are speculating on an article that is all speculation itself and creating FUD for others.
Just out of curiosity, what froyo features are you waiting for that you want so badly?

Go to Twitter.com/GalaxySSupport and look at how many times they specifically say the Captivate will have Froyo by the end of the year.
From what I understand, it's ATT, not Samsung causing any delay. In any event, I'm fine with 2.1...I don't see the huge features brought by 2.2 anyway
At this point we may as well just wait for someone to cook some gingerbread.
Froyo
According to Samsung Galaxy S Support, we should have 2.2 by the end of this year.

I also work at AT&T and i've heard no such date as to when the official 2.2 roll out is going to happen.
yeah if you here a date it is unofficial and subject to change at any moment, usually it will get delayed not pushed up. the att reps i have talked to are kept in the dark until the release day in most cases. the truth is that att is quite lazy.
back in september when we all thought a froyo release was coming soon i spoke to a samsung engineer who quoted "we are working on the froyo update around the clock" and "the wait should not be unusually long" well the lanuage hes used of "working around the clock" put my expectations around november. now who knows.

Even when the official 2.2 update comes out, I honestly don't see myself, or a lot of the xda community switching over to it. With DG doing great work on the Cog builds and a lot of people following in his footsteps to provide us new roms, the official Samsung and ATT approved updates will always be just mediocre at best.

I would love to know which "buggy" froyo leaks people on the forums are talking about. The worst 2.2 beta that I have put on my phone is 1000 times better than the "final" builds that Samsung has put out. JH7 in particular is pure garbage (maybe not with bugs but it's features are neutered).
Bottom line, if anyone is still waiting for Froyo you deserve to wait as long as it takes them to crap out your bloated AT&T neutered froyo. I'll eat my keyboard if they put usb tether back in and don't cripple wifi tether so you have to pay for it.

I, along with most people, are excited for the official release because that means source code follows shortly after. When the source code is released it means all sorts of stable roms, and tweaks to existing roms.
I really don't see why you and other people get so heated over other people wanting this released. I imagine by your attitude that you're running a custom rom. If that is the case there is no doubt you have flashed multiple beta releases of multiple roms and have had some issues along the way.

It's really not that I have a particular disdain for the official release but honestly I'm just an end user I don't have a huge problem with a memory leak if the browser is fast and I don't care about quadrant benchmarks etc. I don't really know what those things are or what they measure. What I do care about is removed features and willful crippling of the OS. The source code just means the rom devs will need to put out a few crappy buggy versions of their roms while they try to figure out how to "fix" all the crap samsung and AT&T broke. I saw it with JH7 I don't think froyo will be any different.

I found the most interesting section to be
So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.
"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."
In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.
How long does it take to lock down the market, install and lock down bloatware, and take away tethering?

Also the have probably been hesitant to release it without a way to lock/disable the Tethering and Mobile AP stock features of 2.2.

Most people that report recent replacements have said GPS works fine. Never hear if this this the normal GPS works for 2-3 days after a fresh flash or they actually did anything to the phone.

Yea, after using Cog and Perception, not so sure if I really want stock 2.2 from AT&T or not. You know it'll be loaded up with bloatware and have useful stuff stripped out from it, such as wifi and usb tethering.
But at least then DG will have an official ROM to start doing mods to.

its not so much that we want stock froyo for our phones...we want the developers at XDA to have their hands on the final build release to make new custom roms with.

Most people that report recent replacements have said GPS works fine. Never hear if this this the normal GPS works for 2-3 days after a fresh flash or they actually did anything to the phone.
Seems like Russian Roulette to me. Sucks your phone has the shutdown. Mine is within the range but only happens on I9000 roms. Good luck.

I got mine replaced yesterday. Gps was working better than ever on stock firmware. Successfully navigated me 10 miles around turns and stops with accurate tracking. I flashed cog 3.03 and now I can't even get a lock. Maybe I'll keep trying.

I agree. I put Cog on my gf's Captivate and she's much happier. Smoother, faster, and the bloatware is what irritated her most of all. The more I learn about this phone the more pissed off I am with Samsung.
Looks like the 2012 rumours are true.
curious if gps will start working ... not holding my breath
Hey guys I own a vibrant and I'm just here to give encouragement. You have to get mad. Get involved. Make your voice heard. We did it over in the vibrant section, start a twitter feed, spam the hell out of att. Apply pressure. Good luck GS bros!

Hopefully the tests will come out smooth. http://www.tmonews.com/2011/06/t-mobile-currently-testing-maintenance-releasegingerbread-update/
Seems like good proof to me. Awesome news
yeah hopefully they dont come back and say oh we need to add more bloatware to slow this beast down.
CAPTURE and LEAK
So, can someone who works at TMo CAPTURE and LEAK this ota test update?
Maybe it contains some non-**** hardware drivers for the devs to work with before the "real" release (which will be released....who knows when).
Man let me test it for them! I'm glad to see this news but they are still procrastinating I'm having dejav of my vibrant again!

Yes they can. They would have to capture the OTA before they download it though. The TMO testing is probably the best chance to get a leak before it is officially released. Or maybe we'll get lucky and Football will get us the leak
good to hear that...

This is actually a normal part of the approval process. That being said, we are still probably a good month away if its at this stage though.

so more than likely we will see another unofficial leak like the vibrant had before they release it ota or what ever and then the official update which will be the same as the unofficial one we had a month prior or
Lol read the article again. Its imei locked
So no leak

Where did you read IMEI locked? They need the IMEI to push the update over the air to the right people. Even if it were, would just need a system dump and make that flashable.

Correcto....
Cool we will see a leak soon lol
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
Just saw the update to the original article; it's apparently not nationwide but only for a specific region, which reduces the pool of potential leakers. It's encouraging, though, to see that this is far enough along to warrant an OTA test with a relatively large pool of testers, as well as to see that it appears to be a combined bug-fix and Gingerbread update. I'm beginning to think that the prognosticators who favor a mid-July general release may have it right.
I said July 17th

If they are interested in getting a good test base, dump it here on XDA, but then again, it would never reach release status
TmoNews TmoNews
Just got an email claiming G2x updates could hit as early as this week which is somewhat contradictory to our earlier post...what to think?!
Where do you see that info?
