The Captivate is seriously the best phone I have ever owned and I purchased it the first day it became available. Now I think I should have waited a few months before shelling out $499.99. But I am getting really disappointed with Samsung and just want to sell it soon. If this is JUST 2.2, imagine Gingerbread or Honeycomb? I know that I don't have to wait for the official releases, as I'm running DG's 9.1.3 ROM, but just this lack of support from Samsung AGAIN is annoying. On top of the lack of timely software support we still have the GPS issue. I did almost all of the tricks in these forums and the GPS works when it wants to. I have to have it work all the time. I'm thinking of when these new dual-core phones come out in the coming months of just selling my beloved Captivate and getting something else that's not made by Samsung-- as the only thing I will truly miss will be the screen. At this point Samsung might as well just skip 2.2 and go straight to 2.3 but we know they won't do that. Hopefully the Nexus S turns out to have fewer issues. /rant
Who is the "we" you are referring too? I guess you are a canadian fascinate owner as that is the only model that was stated for a 2011 update to 2.2.
Seriously, you are speculating on an article that is all speculation itself and creating FUD for others.
Just out of curiosity, what froyo features are you waiting for that you want so badly?

Go to Twitter.com/GalaxySSupport and look at how many times they specifically say the Captivate will have Froyo by the end of the year.
From what I understand, it's ATT, not Samsung causing any delay. In any event, I'm fine with 2.1...I don't see the huge features brought by 2.2 anyway
At this point we may as well just wait for someone to cook some gingerbread.
Froyo
According to Samsung Galaxy S Support, we should have 2.2 by the end of this year.
My friend that works for AT&T says that's supposedly they are supposed to update on November 26th but like everyone else I hear dates alot and have stopped holding my breath... Im looking forward to the flash 10.1 in froyo see what more I can do with my phone online its already taken the place of my laptop for reading my morning tech blogs so I can get up and go.

Seriously? Another thread speculating on the froyo release date? You said it yourself... there's a whole development section that has plenty of froyo for you. If you just wanted to use the software your carrier provides, you should have gotten an iphone.

I also work at AT&T and i've heard no such date as to when the official 2.2 roll out is going to happen.
yeah if you here a date it is unofficial and subject to change at any moment, usually it will get delayed not pushed up. the att reps i have talked to are kept in the dark until the release day in most cases. the truth is that att is quite lazy.
back in september when we all thought a froyo release was coming soon i spoke to a samsung engineer who quoted "we are working on the froyo update around the clock" and "the wait should not be unusually long" well the lanuage hes used of "working around the clock" put my expectations around november. now who knows.

Bluetooth voice dialing. Bluetooth sound quality is bad on i9000 kernels used on the captivate.

Even when the official 2.2 update comes out, I honestly don't see myself, or a lot of the xda community switching over to it. With DG doing great work on the Cog builds and a lot of people following in his footsteps to provide us new roms, the official Samsung and ATT approved updates will always be just mediocre at best.

Well its official...i work for at&t and woke up to an email in my outlook that samsung is waiting for the final approval before the end of the month!! It seems the release date has been changing weekly. I originally had asked the head honcho samsung telecommunications rep (whose name I will leave un said) on saturday and didn't expect such a quick response.

I would love to know which "buggy" froyo leaks people on the forums are talking about. The worst 2.2 beta that I have put on my phone is 1000 times better than the "final" builds that Samsung has put out. JH7 in particular is pure garbage (maybe not with bugs but it's features are neutered).
Bottom line, if anyone is still waiting for Froyo you deserve to wait as long as it takes them to crap out your bloated AT&T neutered froyo. I'll eat my keyboard if they put usb tether back in and don't cripple wifi tether so you have to pay for it.

I, along with most people, are excited for the official release because that means source code follows shortly after. When the source code is released it means all sorts of stable roms, and tweaks to existing roms.
I really don't see why you and other people get so heated over other people wanting this released. I imagine by your attitude that you're running a custom rom. If that is the case there is no doubt you have flashed multiple beta releases of multiple roms and have had some issues along the way.

It's amazing how people are not able to see that an official release is beneficial to the custom ROM community as well.

It's really not that I have a particular disdain for the official release but honestly I'm just an end user I don't have a huge problem with a memory leak if the browser is fast and I don't care about quadrant benchmarks etc. I don't really know what those things are or what they measure. What I do care about is removed features and willful crippling of the OS. The source code just means the rom devs will need to put out a few crappy buggy versions of their roms while they try to figure out how to "fix" all the crap samsung and AT&T broke. I saw it with JH7 I don't think froyo will be any different.

I found the most interesting section to be
So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.
"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."
In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.
How long does it take to lock down the market, install and lock down bloatware, and take away tethering?

I saw that in the Android Central forums, it's quite possible. If the date holds I can hold on another week. Of course it'd be nice for Verizon to say something.
I actually beleive this may really be the date, Im kind of relieved..
My local Verizon corp. store took down all their TB signs. They are only flying the iP4 signs now. There for a while the walls were plastered with TB ads and signs.
Which "MARCH MADNESS" are we going to watch the NCAA BASKETBALL or the VERIZON /HTC Thunderbolt madness ???????
It might be even later if they can't get the FW more stable. It looks like they are going to just release the device and then push a couple OTA after release.
I've had the Incredible since May of 2010(one of the lucky ones) and am amazed at the recent rom development for this phone. I am also eligible for an upgrade as I am the primary line account.
That being said, I am excited for the Thunderbolt; but I can wait for the release. Chances are Verizon may lower the price after 30 days or so, depending on how well its received.

I work for Qualcomm, and the device went gold since January. The Network is being fine tuned to handle the LTE devices, and iPhone traffic, but the firmware is not the reason. There were numerous tentative release dates, but Verizon publically stated 1Q. Iphone 4 was the first priority, but that's my opinion.

I love how everyone is quick to make short little quips instead of discussing it. I know how often we have been dissapointed, but I befriended a Verizon employee through very strange circumstances yesterday and he emailed this today.
It's legit. Internally anyways. MR2 was a failure and GB is ready to go. Lets see if it deploys as planned. A leak would be cool. Kuddos to the OP for actually wanting to inform and have discussion with like minded individuals.
I hope it is real but would not be surprised if it turned out to be fake. That being said, I have to agree that the people who claim it's fake haven't really given a reason to believe it's fake other than a single misspelled word. I've seen much worse mistakes on much more important and official documents where I work, it happens.
I'm not saying it's absolutely legit, just making the point that the reason it's being called fake is pretty flimsy.

Unless I missed something, it looks similar to the one that announced the first update back in May. Either way, we'll find out in 9 days.
If you actually read the Engadget article, they specifically say so far it is just a rumor, and rumors don't come out of thin air, they have been working on this update for several reasons including video chat, skype, g talk, etc., better battery management, and task management on GB (which is much needed). Also quick question would ota go out to rooted phones? If so do you have to have all the bloatware or any other ways to prepare, and/or suggestions? As I understand it, the Thunderbolt is very similar to the Sensation, with the exception of LTE radios, screen resolution and single core vs dual.
And, as we know, the Sensation ships with GB. Therefore, I would expect GB officially for the TBolt without a Samgung-level ridiculous delay.
But, what do I know; I'm a n00b.

You fail. Just because the Sensation is an HTC phone that kinda looks like the Thunderbolt, theyre similar? How about, they are literally two completely different phones. Different CPU, different screen (resolution and size), newer version of Sense that the Thunderbolt will never officially see, HSDPA instead of CDMA/LTE, the only similarity is it is HTC...I don't understand how people try to make the correlation of similarities in two phones relates to the speed of an update on one. It has no bearing.
As a side note, if this was the official GB update, we as the root community would have already had it for at least a month. What we have had for a month NOW is an alpha build, which means we still have some time before our phone sees a GB update AND Verizon approves and pushes it.
The HTC Shift just got yesterday Gingerbread while the Thunderbolt which came out before the shift is still on crappy Froyo.

Ah, I remember well the days when folks yearned for the glory of Froyo and complained about being stuck with "crappy" Eclair.
