Hello guys, I'm interested in one thing...it is possible connection of external memory (Pendrive) using a cable ? (photo below)
Is any software to operate this ?
I don't think it would be possible as the memory in the pen drive needs voltage for it to work, can't remember if it's 3.3 or 5 volts but I doubt galaxy could power it or read from it.

but in nokia n8 this is possible and this phone has the same cable as the picture.
I'm thinking that is needed a suitable program to control this USB...
Nokia has a powered USB port which supplies the connected device with sufficent current in order to read/write to it.
I don't think the Galaxy has ability to output power through it's USB port so with just software I doubt you could achieve it. You would likely need suitable software and also an external power of some sort like a USB hub.
Some people have been trying to achieve this on the Nexus One, but also requires an external powered hub:

According to the official Google Help Page, it should support USB Host. However searching online have returned a lot of out-dated threads about how the USB chip works when it was still running Gingerbread.
I have purchased a USB adapter, tried to connect any USB device to my Nexus S, and nothing happens. The USB port will not be powered. However quoting Google's official help text :
You may need an adapter to connect the keyboard or other device to your phone's USB port. To connect more than one USB device at a time, use a powered USB hub to reduce the drain on your phone’s battery.
This implies that connecting devices to your Nexus S will drain your battery?
I am very confused. I have no powered USB hubs so I cannot try to see if the USB host function is purely limited by the lack of power or the USB chip.
I am sure I am not the only person who would love this to work. Is there anyone who knows what does it take to get USB Host to work on Nexus S upgraded to ICS? (Despite Google's help site indicating that it should just works out of the box)
Thanks a lot.
So, I spent some money and bought a powered USB hub.
No it didn't work.
I think the reason is that the power is not being transferred UPSTREAM. For example, I have connected the USB hub to my Nexus S, and a Logitech wireless mouse receiver to the powered USB hub.
Although I am sure that the Logitech wireless mouse receiver has power (from the USB hub), the Nexus S does not recognize the existence of the USB hub, since the power is not transmitted from the USB hub back INTO the Nexus S.
Feeling disappointed, I repacked everything nicely and exchanged my purchase for a slightly more useful 16GB SD Card.
Does anyone has any information to how is this supposed to work?
Or should we assume Google has made a stupid typo in their help articles, and that the Nexus S will not actually work in USB Host Mode ??
anyone please?
I too am looking for answers. Anyone?

I would like to know if this exists, as if it doesn't I was thinking about making it. As the title may be confusing to understand, maybe describing what I'm trying to do will be easier to explain.
I going to create a dock in a family mini van for a tablet. This tablet will have limited storage space, but has usb otg capabilities. Thus hooking up a flash drive with movies on it would be the goal.
Now running a female to male cable would be fairly easy, however I want to be able to have the tablet charge and still use the usb port to access the usb cable. Thus I need a cable that may be spliced cable with three ends. Where two ends are for usb transfer and another to supply power to the devices. Or if there is another solution, I am up for it.

I have seen Y cables for such a purpose.
If you want to do charge/power and USB host at the same time
you will need the plug into the Android to be an OTG plug with a grounded ID pin.
The other end will go to the flash drive.
If you apply 5V to the Vbus/Gnd your device has the possibility to use this power.
Of course this is an odd situation and it may ignore the 5V and only use its own battery.
Experimenting will show you if this will work without a driver hack.
Not sure if this should be here or in accessories thread but....
I have the samsung usb/sd card adapters

and also a Western Digital external usb harddrive

I cant get the harddrive to connect to my Note 10.1... keeps saying something about high power device???
Now is there a way to get this working??? On my old tablet (original Sony Tablet S) I could just connect the harddrive via an adaptor and it was visible and usable!!!
written with a s pen on my Galaxy Note 2 via XDA PREMIUM APP
Only way would be to modify the USB cable so the drive is powered by another power source I would say.
I'm not sure that will work either. I tried a modified Y cable that has separate power and the HDD is still not recognised on JB on my One-X.

Hi guys
I was just wondering if i will need extra power if I want to connect my nexus 5 to a portable hard drive via OTG? If there are any that don't need extra power, what are they? I'm in the UK thanks.

A portable hard drive will need external power. Don't know any that don't. The power draw is too high for the device to handle it.

I have a 250GB Western Digital Passport, 1TB Samsung M3 and a 500GB DIY portable HDD I made with an old laptop drive and USB 3.0 enclosure from eBay... and none of them require an external power supply as they're all USB powered.
Also, when I had a Note 2 I could connect these drives to it... so whilst I can't say for sure they will work with the N5, I don't think it should be ruled out.
I'm at work right now and have no idea where my USB OTG cable is, but if I can find it when I get home I'll test them out.
Since the S3, all flagship Samsung have been able to power OTG Mechanical HDD's.
On the N5, many will not power however recently a few people have said they have managed to do so, but whatever. Generally the advice with the N5 is you need a powered USB hub. Some may work without but we dont have a catalogue of what works.
I'd really appreciate that CitizenLee. The Samsung M3 was the portable hard drive I was thinking of buying and I would be great to know first hand.

Hi,
I've tried to connect an SSD to my Nexus 5 using the following setup:
Samsung 840 EVO mSATA (MZ-MTE500BW)
ZTC SkyBoard mSATA enclosure
StarTech OTG cable
and apparently there is a power issue.
I've tried to connect using Nexus Media Importer, and although it detects USB Host Support and the OTG connected, it fails to see any storage.
Trying with a memory stick worked, so I know it is not a problem with the app or the cable.
The enclosure with the SSD work when connected to a computer.
From what I know the power consumption is as follows:
Phone can deliver up to 500mA (or 2.5W)
The SSD can consume up to 1W
I could not track down the specs for the enclosure, but the store I bought it from said that it could consume up to 500mA, so it seems that it all adds up to more than the phone can provide.
So, has anyone tried connecting a mSATA to a Nexus 5 and can recommend an enclosure that has a lower power requirement?
Thanks!
SSD's are not the same technology as USB flash drives. They use complex controller boards like HDD's do. Although an ssd has no mechanical parts like a HDD, its still going to need more power than the phone can give. You'll need a powered connection to use an ssd at least - as you would a HDD

I have experienced the same problem with external hdd. It worked fine with pc. Put pluging it to the phone made the power led blinking rapidly on the external hdd case like it has not enough power. I used an USB hub with its wall adapter then the problem gone.
Yes, I now they differ both as technology and power requirements. However, the SSD only consumes 1W while the phone can provide 2.5W. So the problem must be the enclosure.
This is why I was asking if anyone has a recommendation for an mSATA enclosure that consumes at most 1.5W.
Thanks!
Just saying.. I don't think that will be enough.
Also not sure where you're getting your 1w stat from. 500GB evo mSATA has been observed over 2.5w.

Ssd needs more power. Ssd≠usb flash disk
