Captivate Now Perfect - Captivate General

After Froyo leak, the Cappy is now officially an almost perfect phone. GPS works great at stock settings for over 1 week now. I use NDrive GPS app, and I get lock in like 10 secs. Whole trip is accurate to 5-10 feet with no lag. I don't turn on GPS status or anything like that, but I do have to leave it on the dashboard of my car. If I hold it in the passenger's seat or back seat, the antenna doesn't seem to be strong enough to hold accurate lock. Google navigation isn't working accurately for me. I don't know why.
Daily unplug random shut downs now resolved with turning off GPS when charging.
2.2 is fast even at unrooted state.
Android phone functions are just awesome. It's a great PDA and a great phone.
Hope others are experiencing the same. My GPS was mostly unusable when I first got it.

That has been my experience as well. Took it on a 400 mile road trip from Richmond, VA to Mt. Pleasant, SC and it did fantastic as long as it was sitting on my dash, constant lock.

yes Google navigation sucks.
Edit: That was a little harsh.
The truth is it looks awesome. Good job Googies!
But the voice is truly horrible, and the accuracy is useless most of the time.

+1 Same goes for me, since I did gsm reset (use with care, will wipe your data) navigation works as long as
the phone is on the dashboard/attached to the windshield and finally I started to enjoy this phone, I'll keep it.
Flashed to cog2b6, works great.

Tap and pinch to zoom is buggy.

Getting rid of mine. GPS on dash, need for lag fix, random shutdowns, all very frustrating for a top of the line phone.
To me it was just unbearable. Ill miss a lot of it but not all of it.

Actually side by side to the G2 its not that much of a downgrade.
That's another thing about the captivate- the screen is tinted blue! Others I've read are tinted more yellowish or reddish. But wait- there's a fix for that! Lol.
Honestly I really wanted to like the captivate.

I agree.. never had to tweak a phone so much to make it usable.
But - with the latest and greatest Cognition the phone is definitely usable. My only complaint is battery life due to the AMOLED screen being a battery hog. Even with it dimmed it eats more battery than a fat kid at a Hostess Twinkies convention.

I can't really comment on the GPS much but the phone works fine otherwise. This is in comparison to my previous tilt 2 which locked up several times a day.

pdxrealtor, i'm sorry you had so many problems with your captivate, and i hope you're enjoying your G2. i wouldn't say the captivate is perfect, but it's definitely more fun than my old iphone

I got my Cap about two weeks ago. I grabbed the leaked froyo, threw it on with OCLF and this phone is truely a work of art. It has no issues with restarting or any other issue of that sort (current uptime's 4 days, no perf loss). It did have lag issues with eclair but with froyo and oclf, this thing flies. No battery drain issues. No nothing... Not even a blue (or red or yellow) tint, just that halo-creating supersaturation thing.
Gps, havent had much of an issue using it in downtown san francisco with its high rises and me not having a dash that can keep the phone from sliding off when accelerating. But my phone's not a garmin and with everything else it does with great aplumb, having an underperforming gps is okay with me. If i needed a 100% reliable gps for my job or something, id go down to pep boys and get a dedicated gps. In all honesty, if you have a Cap, you can afford a 50 dollar garmin. And if you cant, youre living beyond your means, stop trying to be something your not for the sake of pride and envy, theres more to life than bragging on facebook, etc., etc.

I am the only one with a phone with no bugs?

Maybe it's because I upgraded from an ancient AT&T Tilt (not Tilt II!) and this phone is just so much better that I don't notice the flaws.
But every post on here where people mention some bug or another and Mine does not have said bug.
My GPS works, even in the house (which I thought was not possible, because the GPS signal isn't supposed to go through walls)
My Battery lasts from 9:30 am until midnight with downloads, music, calls, video, browsing, and facebook. I have all of the default battery saving options.
My accelerometer/gyro work perfectly.
Please tell me I'm not the only one, because I am so happy with this phone, and it would be a shame if so many people where having problems that it became a flop.
Just my take on it. It is a new phone so there is still a lot of "unknown" about the phone. Also, if you go to any kind of forum like this you usually see a lot of issue/help threads rather than praise threads. Its just the way it is.
I got mine yesterday.. and love the hell out of it.. No problems at all so far, and have not been able to put it down. hahaha
Mine is great
I love my phone and have had no problems at all. and I love swpe, I almost forgot how to type

I upgraded from a touch diamond and this phone is beastly or I just waited too long to upgrade
I did have a GPS problem though, it wouldnt lock on in like 15 minutes, but I changed the settings and I get a lock pretty fast now.
Lag? None. Touchwiz? Decent, and less choppy than launcherpro!
Phone is real good.
They sold almost a million Galaxy S devices before even launching in the states, and the only 'common' problem I have seen that is not obviously software is the GPS issues. But it seems like most can change around a few settings and be fine.
Most if not all of my issues are because I do not know android. Once one or two software updates come out (or cooks make some nice custom roms with bug fixes) most if not all problems I think will vanish.
Nope
No problems, except for the GPS issue. But I live in NYC, and the buildings have always been an issue when trying to connect to the satellites with any device. Anyway, with that said, no issues with the phone/settings/performance etc. at all.

I'll one-up you, I unplug my phone at 6:30 AM when I am about to leave for work and didn't plug it in until it started complaining at me 28 hours later. Thats pretty darn good given the screen size and the fact that I was using wifi and 3G throughout the day.
Coming from a Iphone 3g.
Got my Captivate on Tuesday. Rooted it, took off the junk. Mine is running great even with no new launcher and live backround. GPS works great too.
No bugs here and phone is way faster then any other phone I have ever used.
Mine is running great too. Maybe it's because I'm not a perfectionist, but I love my phone after removing touchwiz it's even faster too.
So far, so good. Any "issues" can be traced back to my ignorance of an Android-based phone, but being a persistent sort I've either figured out the answers myself or by trolling forums. I would venture a guess that most listed problems relate to:
1. Unrealistic expectations that this new phone should behave the same way, or very similar to an older phone, e.g., number of bars should equal previous phone's number of bars and stuff like that.
2. The results of newbies futzing within the depths of the phone without recognizing the potential consequences of their actions should they screw up.
3. Glitches or wishes that will be addressed in updates.
4. Real problems that can be rectified by a swap within the 30 days.
5. Imagined problems that can be rectified by a reality check.
...and so on.
In any event, I have high expectations and this phone has certainly come close to meeting them.

Amazing GPS performance

Went on a 180 mile trip today through SoCal and I was stunned at how good my GPS is now working. I'd done some tests locally, but never far enough of a drive to consider the results of any significance. Today, I headed east from the San Fernando Valley, through Pasadena, out to San Bernardino, then north through the Pacheco Pass into Hesperia in the high desert. From city to boonies and from about 350 feet elevation to over 3,500. My Cappy got a lock within seconds while sitting in my driveway and never once dropped lock the whole way there and back. Watching the screen the position marker remained steady on the road and did not wander at all. GPS is important to me and I finally have the performance I was getting on my Tilt 2. Yes, I had to go to a custom ROM to get it (Andromeda 1.2), but it runs so well on so many levels that I'm OK with that. Screw stock Froyo (which I tried along with Cog 4.x and GPS was mediocre at best on both).
I drove about 175 miles today using it, and never lost a lock also... I was using my girlfriends phone with stock 2.2. Was accurate to 10 meters whole trip... Had never had anything close to that before upgrade

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Mine works good on any rom as long as I don't put the phone in my lap. Seems that the antenna gets a weak signal if placed back down and gets the dreaded large blue circle and looses accuracy. If I hold the phone up though it is balls on accurate.

Stock, I could lose GPS by just flipping the visor down. Today, I had the phone in my car mount, I put it on the seat at one point, put it to my head to answer a call...didn't lose lock once. All while playing MP3s via BT through the radio.
Im on stock 2.1 and my GPS has always worked fine in my car. I have trouble getting a lock indoors. I went on a 7 hour drive Thursday and didn't lose a lock once.
I wonder if some peoples GPS's are just junk and its the luck of the draw.

hate to poop on the whiner party, but stock 2.1 and now stock 2.2 have worked as expected. totally. this is a gnarly phone.
FireFly is by far the best results I have ever had with GPS...locks super quick and stays!
It seems a lot of the Captivates' GPS, like mine, worked great when the new phone was used for the first 2 to 3 weeks, then it would degrade. Load a new rom on the phone and again it would work fine for 2 to 3 weeks then deteriorate again. I'm always interested in knowing how long the current rom has been installed and how much the GPS has been utilized. The fact that it worked good when new, makes me think the hardware is not the problem. I'm no programmer but I always wondered if the deterioration was the result of some "file" that grew in size as the GPS was utilized. And, as the "file" grew, time/power requirements increased causing the GPS to deteriorate. How could it ever work correctly if it is a hardware issue?

Oh, well, then I guess your singular experience negates that of the many other users whose GPS has been total crap. It must be all their fault and not the device.
At one point I had 3 Captivates in my possession and all had stock Eclair, Froyo, Cog 4.x and Andromeda on them at various times. This was typical of their GPS performance (the phone with Andromeda is on the left).
I've had fairly good gps performance but I'm not picky. However, in the last couple days it won't get a lock no matter what..just flashes. I'm not that picky, but I don't like that it doesn't even get a lock
My first captivate, bought in September, was exchanged at Best Buy on day 30. The GPS on stock eclair never was very stable from day 1, slow to lock, very unreliable on the move much of the time, although not always.
My second captivate had very good GPS on stock eclair. Not perfect, but fast lock and rarely wandered, for three months. Then one day, out of the blue, it turned into my first captivate. I factory reset it. No joy. I exchanged it at ATT warranty center, told them the GPS wasn't working.
The third captivate GPS on stock eclair was an order of magnitude better than the second one ever was. Locks instantly, indoors or out, always good to 5 meters no matter the conditions, it's just unreal. Still is with Froyo.
So, I can say I have had wildly varying experiences with the same software. That tells me there is hardware variance. I haven't tried software fixes, ever, so I can at least be a reference point from that perspective.

I haven't noticed that before, but I've had the current ROM (Paragon) for a couple weeks, and now I can't get a lock - worked great at the start, after a master clear. Maybe the old Samsung GPS reset app would work here.
What you have proposed is something we should all keep in the back of our minds...
My 1008 build had mediocre (at best) GPS. The I sent it in for repair and when I got it back (and installed Andromeda) the GPS worked so well I was beside myself with joy. The GPS remained fabulous for almost 2 month then, while running Cog 4.1 with Adam's GPS fix (and still working great--I got 10 sats while sitting on my toilet!), nirvana ended. I'm lucky to get 4 sats and locking is painfully slow.
It's been this way for about a week. I'm going to complain to Samsung and see if I can send it back for repair again.

I'm not as lucky as you with Andromeda 1.2. I live in the SF bay area and can barely get a lock. Any suggestions?

Are you happy with LG G2X

I've read post from people that seem to be very anal about there phones and nit pick at every little thing, I sold my thunderbolt and love this fine piece of technology despite some issues like light leakage. I personally still like the phonea lot. Its not to big and not to small, Nvidia hardware a company that is actually using the dualcore processors in its gaming applications through Tegra Zone. If the G2x is good enough for steve aka cyanogen its great for me. Not having to deal with Sense and HTC is even better, I don't even want to bother with Samsung phones and updates LOL.

Do agree it was rushed out the door but overall worth it . This is, my first non-htc android phone. Previous ones (g1, mytouch slide, g2(wifes)), all were rooted the first week I had em., well still have them to.

Hell yea, I love this phone... It is the most amazing phone I have ever used... And I have used plenty of android phones... I had HD2 (CM7 Nightly), Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S 4g, HTC shift and now G2X.... Somehow I never liked Atrix, and I do not know why. When I held that phone in my hand I did not feel like I am holding a cutting edge technology in my hand....
As for the G2X, best thing about this phone is, it comes with stock android(close enough)... You are free to do whatever you feel like doing with it. It is going to have amazing dev support, IMO it already has.
I do not have much LCD issues now with my phone luckily. (But that after replacing my phone.) I do not use WIFI at all, coz at my place tmob 4G is faster than my wifi.
I do not have random rebooting issue, one reason for that not happening may be that I let my device reboot after 2-3 days just to get my battery cycle. My GPS works fine. Bluetooth works fine though one time I had issue of my phone forgetting profile for my laptop.
I have laucher pro, go launcher ex, adw launcher installed. I have set them up differently according to the days and time... I keep changing them and still my phone never got hung, never rebooted itself, and never slowed down.... There is enough ram and storage for my use... I have almost 150 apps installed..
I have 8-10 hours of battery life after calibrating it with battery calibrator.. My usage is normal.. I keep background sync on for gmail, facebook, twitter, weather and pulse news. I watch 2-2.5 hours of podcast and youtube.. for 45mins - 1 hour I surf web, xda app and market...
In all I love this phone, it runs very very fast and smooth, and for the first time I am able to use all the apps to their full potential. Like in all the launchers, I can now set any animations I like without worrying about phone freezing or slowing down on me....
I love the phone when it is working right, but the battery use is horrendous. It is worse then my 2.5 year old G1 and it's battery was on it's last leg. I have done the factory reset and it seemed to work for a day and then slowly got worse again since last friday.
I'm using the phone about a 1/3rd of what I would with my g1 (out of fear of draining the battery) and the battery burns through quicker then the old phone. Yesterday I watched a 1 minute you tube video, sent 3 texts, opened a few emails, and played 3 turns on wordfued (total of about 1 minute, 1 move each on 3 games). The rest of the time all I got to do was use to monitor the battery, woo hoo, what fun.
I am also getting lots of reboots now (probably 20 total in a week and a half), and a few freezes. This morning the pinch zoom seems to be out of calibration too.
Tmobile is sending me a new phone and I hope it fixes it. My wife's seems to be working fine.
When it is working probably it is awesome, I'm fairly sure it can move around in google maps quicker than my computer!

every tmobile device that had android i had it. i also had the nexus s since release. i was ready to give up on this device but now since cm7 im liking it even more than i expected. stock isnt always so good....for the nexus it was but stock on the g2x had issues with battery life, signal, reboots etc. this is my 3rd device and i have very minimal bleeding and its great from what i use to have. im just looking forward to more roms preferrably one or two sense ones, and ill be a happy camper.
I am very happy with my G2x. There are some minor issues that I have experienced, but nothing that is going to make me want to get rid of the device. This is my 4th attempt at using an Android Phone. I had the T-Mobile MyTouch 4g when it was first released, but I was not a fan.
Then go forward to when the Samsung Galaxy S 4G was released, I got that phone. I returned it after 14 days, and then went and bought the Nexus S. I loved the Nexus S, but it was not the phone for me and I knew it. I had been waiting for the G2x, and since it was released right before my 30 day window was up, I exchanged my Nexus S for it.
I LOVE IT! It is one of the best phones I have ever used. It might not have the best battery life in the world, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that the phone itself has a lot of features, and a dual-core processor. I think I will be buying a spare battery, which I do not mind doing as long as the phone works well.
Yes I am happy with this phone. All new phones have bugs. I remember my last phone the Samsung Epic having a cap on the data speed as well as other minor bugs. I have yet to experience a random reboot on this phone.
My phone is:
Rooted
Bloatware removed
ADW Settings used to customize my pages
Juice Defender on Extreme setting
Advance Task Killer used each time before turning off my screen
Switchpro used to put custom widgets on top of my home page.
Wintec 16gb MicroSD class 10
My battery drops 1% in 6 hours from the time I sleep and wake up.
My battery drops about 20-30% in 12 hours of light to moderate use during the day.
I got mine this past Sunday and I love it. No reboots, LCD not a problem. My main issue is that I get zero service (the x) inside my building at work. I would think I would at least get 1 bar since I'm in a "very good" 4G area. When I wake the phone, I have 2 bars, but it goes to zero in about 5 seconds. When I take about 10 steps out of my building, I get 4 bars. I can use wifi-calling while at work, but still haven't decided if I want to keep it. I'm thinking of dealing with it for a month and if necessary, swapping it for the Sensation. But if the reception was better, I would definitely keep it. I much prefer vanilla Android over HTC sense. My wife has no issues whatsoever with hers. Both of ours have a 4/05 date bought at Costco in Overland Park, KS.
I am glad you guys like it, as I am waiting for mine to arrive in these two days.
Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. I never had a reboot or problems with bleeding. Hardware wise it is perfect for me. Yes, sometimes I get annoyed when I rub my pinky against the usb port, but its all good. Coming from the vibrant I do miss certain features of touchwiz. Especially the smart dialer and contacts app. This stock froyo one is brutal. I feel like i'm ranting now. Well to sum it up, heres what I like and what I don't:
Pros:
1. Cyanogen Support (A nightly already?!)
2. It's only been out for 2 weeks, the xda community is booming
3. Sexy build quality
4. IPS screen...sometimes it feels like an iPhone...is it just me?
5. Speed
6. Vanilla!
7. FFC cough for the girlfriend cough
Cons
1. Screen Accuracy
2. Battery could have been bigger** (maybe a arc reactor would have been nice)
Thats it :O
**Thats what she said.
I loved my phone at first until other issues started to arise... I got it the day before it hit stores... now when unlocking my phone it pauses on a black screen shows me my screen then brings me to the unlock screen... A PAIN and time consuming! My battery is flakey sometimes REALLY good and sometimes sooooooo awful its unthinkable! Today, I called to finally get a replacement... time to unroot and return!

I really like the device a great deal. However, I am on my third. Calling issues have plagued my previous two. I think it MAY have been an application, or some incompatibility between something(s) I installed. However, this latest one, with most of the same applications does not exhibit the issue.
It is fast, stable, has stock Android, and none of HTC Sense in the way...however, none of Sense's benefits either.

[Q] should i swap my g2x because of GPS, is it worth the risk

i have been unable to get the gps on my g2x to achieve a lock in under 10 minutes, and i have tried krylon's tweak , and some other mods/tweaks i found here on XDA. Do you guys think it is worth sending the phone in to t-mobile/LG? I have seen a lot of threads about some people having problems with their replacements and having to wait weeks for a new phone? Has anyone had a good experience getting a replacement? any feedback would be appreciated
Go ahead and exchange it. The vast majority of phones don't have GPS issues. At least not on the stock ROM.
Today is my last day, and i'm debating returning it as well because of the GPS not being able to get a lock on a stock rom.

Id exchange it, I get a lock in seconds...
Lol go ahead and swap it I bet you the next one will have same gps issues. Use a different way rom or wait for lg to release a baseband fix

Stock rom gps is the best man... If he can't get a lock on stock its probably hardware.the gps in this phone is top notch on stock...
This is surprising. First major great impression walking out of the Tmo store this week with this phone was how fast my GPS lock was. 2-3 seconds. Of course, I came from a year of tweaking my Captivate to finally get it to a satisfactory 100 meter lock in 15 secs.

Mine sometimes locks in seconds and sometimes takes a bit of time to lock, or I may have to retry sometimes shutting down navigation and opening again... I think its because navigation is in beta, otherwise not much of a problem

I think there must be a bug in the hardware driver for the GPS.. sometimes it works instantly for me, and other times I never get a lock.
There's clearly something funky about the integration of the GPS with the software on this phone. If you look at GPSTest, for example, all the signal-to-noise values are off the scale, running into the text above the graphical area; in GPS Status, the area of the circles representing the satellite positions is supposed to be proportional to the S/N ratio, and they're all huge, much larger than the (presumably normal) sizes in the screenshot in the market. To me, that indicates a units error, where the GPS is reporting in a smaller unit than the software is expecting. That suggests that other facets of the interface between the GPS and the software may be out of kilter and responsible for the erratic behavior.
There may be other factors in play, also. I often get a pretty quick lock, 10-15 seconds. Last week I opened Google navigation and waited for 20 minutes (5 stationary, 15 driving) to get a lock without success. I power-cycled the phone, and when it came back it got a lock essentially as soon as I opened the application. (Which is not dissimilar to other things on this phone -- I find it runs much more smoothly and reliably if I reboot it every couple of days. I'm thinking there's probably some bug in the memory management with fragmentation or leaks.)
I'm running stock everything, BTW.
I get a decent 3G, 4G and GPS signal at my house.
Right down the street I get a GREAT signal.
It's odd cause I can launch Maps or Navigation while driving, and it will take a few minutes to "lock on".
But if I set my destination at the house before leaving, it is almost instant.

I've seen this issue too. It's a bug in the GPS firmware.
well i took the plunge, my new g2x is on the way. I really hope it isn't a bleeder/rebooter.

GPS Problems? Possible Hardware Solution

So I came across this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101066) thread in the DHD forum the other day, and had mixed feelings about it. In theory it makes sense, but in practice it seems kind of scary. Anyway, I've had GPS issues on and off since I got my Inspire, sometimes it would work excellent, sometimes it would kind of work, sometimes it wouldn't work at all. I've tried every software solution I could think of (new radios, gps script, reinstalling locations, wiping EFS partition, etc), and I figured my problem had to be hardware, but I'd never seen a hardware solution offered until I came across this thread. First off I would like to say that I have not tried this fix yet, however I'm inclined to and here's why:
After reading this, I started thinking, "OK, so it's just not getting good enough pressure on the GPS antennae contacts, wonder what would happen if I tried to apply manual pressure?" So I launched GPS Test and watched it find 2 or 3 satellites, but didn't lock after about a minute. So I applied pressure to the battery flash/GPS cover, 1 finger on the top of it 1 finger on the bottom, making sure not to cover the hole. What happened? Immediately it found 9 satellites and locked to 20ft, showing better connections to the satellites than i've EVER seen. I let off the pressure and watched as the signal strength to these satellites dropped intensely, went back to 2 or 3 satellites, and lost the lock. I again applied pressure, got a bunch of satellites back and got an immediate lock.
Before I go about taking my phone apart and trying to fix these contacts from the inside, I wanted to see if applying pressure on the back flash/GPS cover improved anything for anybody else, or if it's just my imagination. Please report back
I havn't had any problems with my gps, but if the problem you are having is what I was having I would be cracking the phone open to fix it...
I dont mind taking things apart
My GPS works, but there's some disconnect between Navigation and the GPS, I sware. If I run Navigation by itself, then I lose signal 2-3 minutes after getting a lock. If I run My Tracks in the background, then it stays locked.

3 Inspires, no GPS issues at all, but it makes sense and doesn't look difficult at all. Go for it.
Well I tried it. I can't say if it was me applying pressure or me just getting lucky with signal and clear skies...but I locked to 7 very quickly and it found my location with in 20 feet here as well.
Interesting...

Um, I just tried applying pressure and got 8 meter lock on inside my house. My GPS usually NEVER locks on, even outside in clear skies. Wtf.
Edit: And now it's working all the time. I love you.
It didn't hurt to apply pressure to the area where you said the gps contacts are. So I opened up gps status in my home. Let it try and find some satellites on its own. Nothing was happening for a few seconds. Then I applied pressure to where the flash is on our phones one finger above the flash and the other below the flash. It then fixes satellites on my phone. And when I let go the fixed satellites dropped and my radius grew. I tried applying again and then it went back and started to drop. So I let go and it went up so I think the contacts are contacting and now I'm just covering up the gps but it seems to work. So now when I want to use gps ill remember this trick.
Thanks

I pried out the flash cover and noticed that the antenna contacts on the cover were oxidized except for the part where the corner of the spring contacts landed. I scraped away the oxidation with a sharp object and bent the spring contacts up a little bit to make a firmer connection and I immediately got a boost in GPS reception. I dont' know what metal makes up the antenna in the flash cover but it sounds like oxidation builds back up again after a couple of months. I'll keep an eye on it and post an update.
This is perfect! I just did it, took about ten minutes. After reboot I just locked to under 60ft indoors during Hurricane Irene.
Thanks so much for this, now I can stop reading all these damn gps threads!

Another update: just locked to 24ft outside in less than 15 seconds.

GPS lock
Christ..I dont believe this.. I always have problems with Google Navigation getting satellite lock..and maps is usually like 1500-1600ft +or-... I did the pressure on the spots above and below the flash like you guys said... all of a sudden..boom! GPS lock inside my house..(never happens) and 9 satellites locked..(most I ever saw was 5 before when I was outside in a clear area.)..the GPS nav icon is almost on my house roof!
This issue puts it in perspective how bad the quality is on this device.

Wow can't believe there are this many people confirming this. I'll be adjusting my gps contacts in a a day or two and ill report back. Definitely seems like its gonna help a few of us anyway
signatures annoy me
I have actually noticed the same issues as you were describing. I have pushed on the back and waited and then found the signal got better. Then released the pressure and it got either worse or just stayed the same. Different results every now and then. I have also taken it apart and tried the DHD fixed that your describing and it worked excellent for a little bit then nothing. I'm returning it now to have HTC fix it. Probably the easiest way. Sucks not having a phone but at least they will give me a phone that does everything its supposed to. They were really nice about it too.

This is a great thread. I fortunately do not have the issue on my device to where I need to mess with it, but experience tells me living in a somewhat temperate / rainly climate the contacts may oxidize / signal degrades over time. Good to know how to address it...I had an iPhone 3G I took apart at the end of its life. I had noticed the GPS was really sucking toward the end. Sure enough, plain old brown rust was evident on the GPS antenna contacts...
****, I wish I had known about this before I exchanged my Inspire at my AT&T store. I couldn't get GPS lock at all. It was a hassle, and I had all but narrowed it down to hardware, so this really makes sense.
