Kernel numbers. Baseband, Buildnumber. What do they mean?

Hello.
From my post number you can understand that i am pretty new to the android world. So from my short understanding,
Kernel=The core of the OS
Firmware=The entire OS including the core .
Correct me on the above if am wrong.
Now lets get on topic. I want to root and then bring my phone to the factory default kernel or firmware if that makes a difference.
Looking at my phone status and on topics like :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
i see a lot of numbers that i dont understand.
First of all lets talk about my phone.
Baseband Version: I9100XXKI1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7.19100XWKI4-CL575468
Build Number: Gingerbread.XWKI4
1) The KI4 specifies the firmware version ? If yes why in the baseband i have KI1 while one the build number KI4 ? (i had KE7 before upgrading with KIES)
2) If i would like to download the original firmware from the thread i posted above i should go for the following as described below ? Even here, The Phone says XXKI1 while PDA XWKI4 . On which should i be interested and what is each of them .
XWKI4
Firmware info
PDA:XWKI4
PHONE: XXKI1
Date: 14/09/2011
Android 2.3.4
3) Even on the XWKI4 on the above thread, there are several links, OXX MultiCSC(AUT, COS, ...), DBT (Germany), XEU (UK) , XWKI4 Stock Kernel etc. My phone was imported from Germany, does it really matter what download link i chose ? What is again the difference in them.
4) Now about kernels. For an insecure kernel i should go for the GT-I9100_XWKI4_insecure ?
5) As last , to restore back to the factory default firmware (or kernel), i need to download the original kernel from the above thread i posted which would be ( GT-I9100_XWKI4_original) , or i can simply apply the firmware which would add also the firmware and would replace it without any problem ?
Thank you very much in advance.
no one knows the answer of any of the 4-5 points ?

Because you can see the baseband (modem) as an own package in the rom.
Sometimes the rom gets updated and the modem doesn't thats why the numbers are different.
You can also flash just another modem and keep the rest of the rom.

Looks good, just write down what kernel/modem/rom you have atm and get one with the same specs among the the original firmwares.

If you flash the original firmware it will contain the original kernel.

[Q] Your device does not support software upgrading via kies

I have a galaxy tab7 and it is being rooted and unlock. I want to upgrade the OS from Froyo 2.2 to Ginger Bread 2.3.4 but it said that "Your device does not support software upgrading via kies" .
Current firmware version: P1000DXJK2/P1000LBJJ2/P1000DXJJ2/P1000DXJK2
Please help me about my problem. Thank you!

I have the same problem with a GT-I5510L...
Its simple, you need to change CSC code,im using SGS2 i9100G and before this my SGS2 CSC code is KOR but i live in Malaysia so i need to change it,Malaysia CSC code is XME,so you need to find your CSC that same as your region, google it to find the CSC code region..to change CSC just type *#272*IMEI# then choose your region CSC..BEWARE!after you install new CSC it will factory data automatically, but after that you can update your phone via kies, its works on my phone now..
i have the same problem with galaxy Y!anyone can help?

[Q] Can't update via Kies or OTA

Hello everyone,
Long time ago i flashed a stock Austria 4.1.2 ROM (N7100XXDMC3_N7100OXXDMC2_N7100XXDLK7_HOME.tar.md5) and some days ago my phone started telling me it has a system update (which fails everytime)
Cannot update OTA and Kies says "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies."
Changing CSC to NEE with CSC Changer didn't help
Flashed N7100XXDME6_N7100ROMDMF1_N7100XXDME4_HOME.tar.md5 from sammobile and still got the same problem
I didn't flash a separate CSC/modem/anything else
*#1234# says:
AP: N7100XXDME6
CP: N7100XXDME4
CSC: N7100ROMDMF1
Settings -> About:
Baseband version: N7100XXDME4
Build number: JZO54K.N7100XXDME6
Kies says:
PDA:ME6 / PHONE:ME4 / CSC:MF1 (XXX) --> why XXX ?
Phone's box shows: GT-N7100TADCOA (COA means Cosmote, and Phone was bought from Orange?!). It should had ORO (Orange Romania) - as I had Orange startup screen and Orange apps in it
From what I know, you can change the CSC ONLY on OPEN firmware
Well, I got lost between the codes. I know you have to have Product Code and CSC "linked", like Product Code shows the Country and CSC the region, right ?
I don't care if it's Open Austria or Unbranded Romania (does that even exist ? CSC HAT ?), I just want an unbranded stock (and rootable) firmware.
P.S: I tried changing Product Code with Simlock Remote Client and I admit I don't know what i have now and how to check
Any suggestions/help much appreciated !
Bro... I guess yu hve installed dfrrent region frmware ...dats d reason for ur problem
Hit thanks rather typing

Had a similar issue yesterday when I tried to update my rooted 5.0.2 to an official 5.1.1. I have used ODIN many times before since SGS3, and back then you were able to mix your system image from other regions, but that apparantly has been locked down by Samsung. Now you can only update an official version of the rom if it exactly matches your existing region. Because you updated your SK international S6 and tried a region set rom from Czech it most likely failed towards the very end of flash with "FAIL".
Your options are: 1) you download the 5.1.1 version for your region in ODIN format from SAMMobile or 2) you use Smart Switch and let it do it for you - in this case you will need to know the SN of your phone as it is used for verification.
Samsung has locked down the serial number with the regions that come with it. So if you have to install, you should update it or use same region odin file. There is a way to break this chain if you are rooted and some additional files are being used in the odin but I am not completely sure as I have not tried it yet. But there are chances that you may void your warranty if you try that or the worse hard brick as it can sometimes change your serial number if not used properly. but I wouldn recommend that. I'll let you know once I understand the usage correctly.

Device X , Binary Y errors in Odin mean you are trying to flash an older firmware version than what is on your phone. Device X = current bootloader version number on phone. Binary Y = bootloader version you are trying to flash.
You will have to find latest version to flash for your phone. Bootloader version number is the 5 th number from the right of the firmware name.

Not sure if it will help if you can't boot into phone but in twrp have you tried a factory reset to see if it fixes issue or if you have a backup you could try and restore your phone from that.
If not and since don't know what version you were on before you will have to find the latest firmware for your region (and carrier).
Firmware name will look this(depending on your model)
Example.: G955FXXU2CRF7 the number 2 (5th from the right) will be the bootloader version number. The higher the number the latest released firmware.
I normally use updato.com for my firmware but you could use sammobil or samfirm.
https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=S8+&exact=1
Make sure you select the right phone model and in the filter section select region (and carrier) to refine search.
Note: This will replace twrp with stock recovery and also use latest Odin 3.13.1

Does this apply to the CSC and AP too? Or is there a different way to tell the binary version of the AP and CSC? Because I get the error telling me I've fused 7 and bin 6 for CSC and fused 6 and bin 5 for AP.

Since your on android 7 with Binary ( bootloader ) no.1 you can flash any firmware you want ( within reason )
Just remember if you update bootloader versions you can't downgrade.
If you want the latest version for your device use this PC app

Device X Binary Y error means you are trying flash older firmware than what is on your phone.
You can't downgrade ( binary/bootloader ) versions.
Your CSC code will generally be the country/network of where you live and is represented as XXX
If going to use frija then enter model number ( eg: SM-G955F ) and csc XXX.
