APP. REQ - General Questions and Answers

I have an idea for an app. believe its sellable I have no idea what to do. Hoping someone might have knowledge willing to partner up. If you have interest,I think its great opportunity

Hi there,
Ok first of all do a good search to make sure a similar or same app does not exist.
If it doesnt, make a thread here in QnA or alter your first post in this thread and change the title to [APP REQ] [brief title] and fully describe what you would like, how the app should look (with some screeners or gfx) and what it should do.
I did the same a few years ago and found a willing young dev learning how to code who made the app for me just for the quodos
Ill support you if you the above properly and put in the work in the post so its properly laid out and descriptive.
Good luck.

Thanks alot, just nervous someome might steal idea

UPDATE IDEAS -- WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE CHANGE HERE!! [Response Now Posted!!!]

UPDATES: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN HERE!!!
This enitre section has been dedicated to you, and getting you the help and information you need! For that reason, it is only right that you all have a say in what you would like to see happen here.
From changes in the rules, to specific info, IT IS ALL UP TO YOU!!! Myself, and the other members who dedicate there time here, are constantly trying to come up with new ideas and ways to make this section better for you. So give us a hand, and you will get what you want.
This is not another thread where you ideas and comments will just be looked over. All of you requested the ability to open your own thread, and you got it. Now what else do you want to see happen here? Looking forward to seeing your ideas!!!
**ONCE YOUR POST HAS BEEN READ, IT MAY BE REMOVED. THIS IS NOT BECAUSE YOUR IDEA OR COMMENT IS NOT BEING WORKED ON AND CONSIDERED. THIS IS SIMPLY TO ENSURE THAT ALL IDEAS WILL BE SEEN AND NOT LOST IN PAGE AFTER PAGE OF POSTS!! EACH IDEA OR COMMENT WILL BE COPIED TO ALL MODERATORS AND MEMBERS WHO WORK ON THIS SECTION. WE WILL THEN TRY OUR BEST TO FULFILL YOUR REQUEST!!
As a noob with an interest in this I would like to see an area where some steps are given to get us started. I don't learn too well by reading, and prefer to see some examples.
An example would be a screen shot of some code, along with what it does and why it does it.
Maybe if someone is feeling extra adventurous, some 'hands on' tests could be posted, starting with easy, small basic apps going up to fixing issues on the latest ROM.
I have gone through google and most places seem to assume that there is already some basic knowledge acquired. I have no knowledge but a strong interest.
Right now it seems like a huge undertaking, but with people posting new software, fixes, ROM's etc in a short period of time I am beginning to believe it is more about understanding concepts than learning a complete new way of thinking.
How did you guys start? What were your first steps? What help would you give your best friend if they wanted to start writing apps and cooking ROM's?
I appreciate all you guys do, and the help I have got from this site over the last few months has been immense. I want some advice on how I can give something back.

[REQ] 2.10.605.1 Untouched but Rooted

I'd like to request a completely untouched version of this ROM with the exception of root. (No debloating, no deodexing, no zipaligning, etc...)
I'm surprised this didn't come out first and I think many would appreciate it as well.

I was aware of that but it would be nice if someone can uploaded a completed version of this to save quite a bit of time.

Its a couple extra steps, and doesn't really take much longer than flashing a rooted rom file. Plus flashing the patched HBoot is safer, and for how "easy" this is.. I wouldn't expect any dev to take the time and make just a "rooted" version of the rom to flash.
Odd. I don't see anything in the forum rules that say people should ask for help. I don't blame the guy for asking. Why not? What's next--create your own ROM, why should others do it? Figure out your own root method instead of asking someone if they have?
For all the people who give the guy grief about asking, maybe someone else will say, "yeah, that's a good idea" and help the guy (and others) out.
Joel
I think it's more that this person is asking in multiple places for a few hours. Coulda had it done by now. Just rubs some people the wrong way.
Wow guys, well I think I can officially say XDA is no longer the same site I thought it was....
FYI, I had already done the posted method no problem. The only reason I made this thread was in an effort to request if a developer (of which I am not) could create a simple ROM that would help other newbies out and make it an easy one-flash task so they don't have to worry. But no, I guess it's a sin to be a newbie now huh? How dare anyone request something so simple from a developer (especially when a well known dev already spent more work creating another version of the same ROM). So this should be even harder for them to do right? And honestly, why anyone sees this thread as a forceful obligation for someone to fulfill the request is beyond me.
Very productive and helpful posts everyone. Great job at showing how supportive XDA has become...
You do realize pulling the rom.zip from an RUU takes about 2 minutes to accomplish, including the time it takes to google the "how-to". But you would rather bother a dev to do it for you, adding the trouble of having to wait the 20+ minutes to upload the 350MB file to waste precious personal server space for a single person's downloading convenience. A 2 minute job turned 30 minutes of someone else's time cus you didn't feel like it. The difference between a good noob and a bad noob: good noob asks how to get roms from RUUs, bad noob tells someone else to do it for them without hesitation.

Oh please, you are defending yourself ex post facto because you were attacked for being shown that if it matters that much to help the new commers you could make what you wanted pretty quickly by following a how-to. If you really want to help them, you could have probably finished the how-to and posted it in the time you took to complain.
It's great to do things for anyone new and I am all for it (which is why in the few months I have been an official member, I have 60+ "thanks," most of which came from answering questions or giving out useful information.
No one is attacking you for wanting to help noobs, but people will call you out when you claim to want to help and are shown, but ignore it anyways. It comes back to the quote:
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

If all someone said was to google it or do this yourself without telling you how it could be done with links or something then that would be messed up, but they did not. They gave you links in both this thread and the other (the other thread giving you EXACTLY what you requested in a link).
IMHO if you really want to help those you say you want to help, you could create a post in the developer's forum linking to the post that someone gave you in the other topic from rootzwiki. That way they can be pointed in the right direction.

Calling all devs

Please only reply to this thread if you feel you have what it takes to cook, port, or fix a custom rom.
We all want rom's, and we all want to flash things it's why we signed up for this site and follow it so closely. Now, the atrix 2 community is short handed on devs so we need people who will step up to the plate and help with this. For now, all I need from you is a reply to this thread. So that you can get your name out there and be known by Jim and myself. I will help you along the way to building your roms. DO NOT be afraid to ask for help. The best place to ask for help is in a reply to a thread so that other members searching for info can find answers to the same question's. You may also PM me at anytime I will respond as quickly as I can and I WILL go out of my way to help. Jim is also a great help and much more fluent in the linux environment then myself. So come on peeps we have a great device here, its time to make it shine!
This OP will be updated from time to time so please check back here often, MOD please sticky this!

As stated I am here too, and I will also respond to PMs as well, and I am willing to put in what is needed to help anyone out with cooking, or Linux / Android OS questions.
Let the Development begin to flow!
Yes, I also vote to make this a sticky. To our MODs: Please?
I've talked with Jim about this as well and I will be trying to start on something next week but can't guarantee a timeframe since I will be starting this brand new. I will also be trying to port over a theme or two as well.
I CAN PROMISE LOTS OF QUESTIONS THOUGH!!

I would like to try my hand at making/porting a ROM, I have experience with Linux/Unix. Is there a resource for learning the ropes of making a ROM?
still waiting for my atrix, but count me in .. I'm quite familiar with linux but never develop any ROMs..
I'd like to try and help.
Hey guys, I just want to re-open this call for help.....
I know that both lfaber06 and I are swamped with day to day stuff as well as things in here, and we also have cogery helping out, and JRW28 has jumped in and done a couple of things as well.
Thanks cogeary and JRW 28 for all the help so far!
We really need some people to jump in and help with ROM development and porting, no experience needed, just the desire to give it a shot, and some time to spare and have fun with it.
I have been unable to work on any ROM building/porting in quite a while, since I am working on some very low level hacks, if you want to know something I am working on, it is the same thing kohlk and a few others are working on, for the razr and bionic. I am not ready to reveal anything yet, because I don't want Moto or AT&T to catch wind and block in the next release. I am getting closer to this, and it is something I have been working on in here since day one, so most of you know, with out me saying anything, what this is.... don't ask in this thread what it is, PM me instead if you must know.
If you want to and are able to help, with ROM building/porting, reply here, and send a PM to lfaber06 and I, and lets hopefully get some more stuff flowing.
Thanks!

I'm willing to be a part of developing for this phone. I do have to admit, while I'm a fair hand at linux, and have the Android SDK set up on both Ubuntu and Windows 7, I have never even begun to try my hand at Android development. I'm familiar with reading code syntax, though I can't actually code, and I know my way around both bash and the windows command line. I am however, gifted with the ability to learn very quickly, and have a lot of time on my hands at the moment, so if there's anyone that can help me along with android development, I'd love to be more of a contributor.
I'm still willing to help in any way I can.
Just pm me n let me know where to begin, I'm always willing
Im down

I'm willing and consider myself able. I'll do some reading and research over the weekend. I typically have three hours a night through the week free (est). If there is a starting point you think we should focus on outline it. We could start independently and go from there.

I have received everyones PMs, and I want to thank you.
I have not replied yet, because I have sent a PM to lfaber06 and we are figuring out which tasks we need filled right now with the projects we are working on. Once lfaber06 and I have figured it all out, I am hoping later this week, to have it all laid out in a PM to those that have PM'd me.

[Q] Question for App Developers

Hey guys,
I am not really sure if this is the right place or even the right forum.
My best friend wants to apply for this job and asked me if I could post a question for him.
I am not allowed to post links yet so just google App Developer bei Headmatch.
I'll post the link as soon as I can.
He fullfills almost all the requirements listed in this ad apart from one:
he totally lacks job experience. He works as a webdeveloper but in his freetime he enjoys to develop apps and I think he is pretty good at it.
Do you think he should apply. Do you think they'll take him seriously if he tells them what I told you?
Thanks, I'd be really glad if I get some feedback from you.

Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Thanks for moving the thread.
It wasn't on purpose and I hope to get some feedback in this subforum...

That's a good question and one that many people here might like to know.
There's a lot of talent here, but can those people get hired?
I think that one of the stumbling block might be lack of experience,
both collaborating with people and using collaborative software (SVN, CVS, Git).
I'd like to hear from somebody who actually hires, somebody who will say,
"Yes, I'll hire somebody clever and not throw their résumé away just because they don't know XYZ yet".
Unfortunately in this economy I think that many managers want to play it safe
with some dirge who has been doing the same job already for 5 years.
Hey,
thanks a lot for your comment and feedback
It would be nice if employers would think that way

But I fear that's not the case.
Is there anyone in this forum who made a different experience???

Anyway, I think I'll take a chance and apply for this job.
I guess there's nothing to lose.
And if there's isn't anyone who could actually help me, all I can do is try...
I think it depends on the individual's ability to illustrate and prove their drive and commitment to their craft. Experience is always preferable, but someone truly commited and promising is an equally valuable asset, as well.
Google is the dream company to work with for many people that aspire to do <strong>great</strong> things in their careers and lives. Both people with experience and without, like yourself and myself and anyone else reading this thread and asking the same question. That being said, it's better to be <i>more</i> prepared than your competition if you lack the experience they have. It's great to be self-driven and be able to learn a subject or trade on your own time. Employers don't look for visionaries during a job interview, they look for competence. Demonstrate your competence to get the job done as well as your proficiency in the professional skills required to do it. Beyond that, it's in their hands to pick whoever they see fit for the job.

[Q] Lookin for freelance App developer

Hi Everyone,
This is my first ever post, so please go easy on me! I am sorry if this is missed placed, if so please may you kindly direct me to the right place.
I have an idea for an app and was wondering if i could find someone interested in developing and bringing it to life. The main platform to start with would preferably be on android, then cross platform from there.
I have a few channels to market it once it is born and grow it with no problems.
I am willing to pay however the simple fact that i am searching in a forum instead of going direct to a company should say alot about my financial situation However the more it grows the more money we will make. (maybe a percentage agrrement on sales)
I will say it is a complex idea and will require an advanced developer.
I am looking for someone who loves what they do.
Please get in contact with me and we will go from there!
I was on the same boat & still thought xda-developer have a sub - forum where willing devz & those are in need have an specific terminal, dreaming for because it's xda !
