JI6 for Vibrant is out - Captivate General

Posted on Samsung Service wall in facebook. They just released the offical JI6 for T-mobile's Vibrant. Maybe we are next, who knows lol.

I dont ever visit the other Galaxy S forums (I probably should) but from looking over there on the Vibrant section, their JI6 is not Froyo, which seems strange to me. Perhaps someone else could elaborate.

Samsung called it JI6 FOTA.

I saw that on my FB too. When I went over to the Vibrant forums, though, they seem to not care at all. One post from this morning that was very similar to this one said something like "JI6 FOTA is official, per Facebook. Blah, blah, blah were never going to get 2.2."
I dont fully understand firmware version numbering but maybe the prefix is different than ours.

They're also going on about how the 2.2 update won't be until 2011 and the GPS fix isn't until after Thanksgiving (late November)... of course this is all according to someone's friend.

JI6 is just a code. In Samsung terminology, I is for the month of the build (A= January, B= February...I=September), 6 is the revision number. JI6 is therefore the sixth internal firmware revision in September. For us it happens to be leaked Froyo, for them, OTA Eclair.

I think J is for "10" as in 2010, as it's the 10th letter in the alphabet. But funny thing, the Fascinate roms start with D. As their latest update is DI01. Dont know what the D stands for, but the I is for sept and 01 is for the first build.

Until you realize that the i9000 owners are playing with JPK, a 11th version of Froyo built in the 16th month of the year 2010.

Exactly as long as they release it somwhere in September ill be happy
Yeah it's probably getting held back for Rogers to test and or lock up the phone like the whole HTC Dream fiasco.
And here i thought, we canadian beat the US for the first time having x10 in our country before them... but now we are last in our update. Where is our justice!

Actually, they say that it will be released sometime between October 1 and December 31. Makes some sense, as it's not expected to be released anywhere until the end of September, and if it falls even a week after that it'll be October.
With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if it does take Rogers until December. Have they even released 026 yet? That's why I rooted and went with the generic ROM. Been running 026 for like a month-and-a-half.
As others have said, as long as a generic X10a firmware gets posted somewhere, we'll be set.
I think Canadian cell phone users were anticipating this though. It happens all the time. For once I almost thought we'd be close to par but I saw that tweet earlier as well.
Ah well. Thankfully there's a strong online community and we'll have this minutes after it's released

So just wondering, is debranding the same thing as unlocking? I'm looking at the tutorial in Xperiax10.net... they say it might brick the phone so I'm hesitating slightly...

Debrand = remove operator logos, apps (bloatware), etc. Lets you use generic FW and FW from other carriers
Unlocking = allows you to use your phone on a different carrier. No more binding to carriers. You'll want to debrand your phone and use a generic FW once it's released... we'll definitely be getting a late update from Rogers.
Absolute BS. Hmm, to change phone or not.. I wonder if we will actually get One-Finger Zoom?

Froyo rolling out across UK

According to SamsungMobileUK - Froyo is official now (again?). Everyone will have it by End of Month. Is that USA too?
From twitter:
https://twitter.com/#!/samsungukmobile/status/29684769499
Froyo starts rolling out today; everyone will have it by the end of Nov. To prepare, get the latest version of Kies http://bit.ly/cfjJDa
I think we should see it by Christmas. That way when we get it earlier, it will be that much more exciting!
Samsung has been quick to point out that when SamsungUK says 'everyone', they mean 'everyone in Europe'. They have consistently said 'By the end of the year' for us Yank's.

yes, but they have not really qualified when that really is - it could also be in November. One rumor site claims all of us by the 11th of November.
For a multinational company, they have terrible communication skills. We are left to infer what they mean. But you are correct - previous communication has been region specific.
I have already installed the Froyo version available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
After Froyo is released officially in the US for AT&T, does anyone knows if there would be a way to upgrade to the official version?
* Update: Nevermind my question... there is a thread about this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821480
According to this:
https://twitter.com/samsungukmobile/status/535769122865153
They say that there have been some fixes to the GPS in Froyo. Let's hope so because I am tired of this unreliable GPS which I can't really use.

what i dont get is why is gingerbread coming out like in a week or 2 and we are getting 2.2? shouldnt they have just used this past month or 2 to make gingerbread work instead? Its obviously been available for sometime if its being released.

Especially when you consider that Samsung had access to the Gingerbread source for the Nexus S (the first Gingerbread phone to come out). At this point I am just hoping we get Froyo soon. If we are lucky, the Nexus S will help make an official update to Gingerbread come sooner; or if not, if the hardware is similar enough we may get unofficial gingerbread updates soon after the Nexus S sources become available.

So supposedly we aren't getting the official 2.2 update this year.

Just read this article:
http://androidandme.com/2010/11/pho...-s-phones-will-not-see-android-2-2-till-2011/
The Captivate is seriously the best phone I have ever owned and I purchased it the first day it became available. Now I think I should have waited a few months before shelling out $499.99. But I am getting really disappointed with Samsung and just want to sell it soon. If this is JUST 2.2, imagine Gingerbread or Honeycomb? I know that I don't have to wait for the official releases, as I'm running DG's 9.1.3 ROM, but just this lack of support from Samsung AGAIN is annoying. On top of the lack of timely software support we still have the GPS issue. I did almost all of the tricks in these forums and the GPS works when it wants to. I have to have it work all the time. I'm thinking of when these new dual-core phones come out in the coming months of just selling my beloved Captivate and getting something else that's not made by Samsung-- as the only thing I will truly miss will be the screen. At this point Samsung might as well just skip 2.2 and go straight to 2.3 but we know they won't do that. Hopefully the Nexus S turns out to have fewer issues. /rant
Who is the "we" you are referring too? I guess you are a canadian fascinate owner as that is the only model that was stated for a 2011 update to 2.2.
Seriously, you are speculating on an article that is all speculation itself and creating FUD for others.
Just out of curiosity, what froyo features are you waiting for that you want so badly?

Go to Twitter.com/GalaxySSupport and look at how many times they specifically say the Captivate will have Froyo by the end of the year.
From what I understand, it's ATT, not Samsung causing any delay. In any event, I'm fine with 2.1...I don't see the huge features brought by 2.2 anyway
At this point we may as well just wait for someone to cook some gingerbread.
Froyo
According to Samsung Galaxy S Support, we should have 2.2 by the end of this year.
My friend that works for AT&T says that's supposedly they are supposed to update on November 26th but like everyone else I hear dates alot and have stopped holding my breath... Seriously? Another thread speculating on the froyo release date? You said it yourself... there's a whole development section that has plenty of froyo for you. If you just wanted to use the software your carrier provides, you should have gotten an iphone.

I also work at AT&T and i've heard no such date as to when the official 2.2 roll out is going to happen.
yeah if you here a date it is unofficial and subject to change at any moment, usually it will get delayed not pushed up. the att reps i have talked to are kept in the dark until the release day in most cases. the truth is that att is quite lazy.
back in september when we all thought a froyo release was coming soon i spoke to a samsung engineer who quoted "we are working on the froyo update around the clock" and "the wait should not be unusually long" well the lanuage hes used of "working around the clock" put my expectations around november. now who knows.

Bluetooth voice dialing. Bluetooth sound quality is bad on i9000 kernels used on the captivate.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Even when the official 2.2 update comes out, I honestly don't see myself, or a lot of the xda community switching over to it. With DG doing great work on the Cog builds and a lot of people following in his footsteps to provide us new roms, the official Samsung and ATT approved updates will always be just mediocre at best.

When I read this on engadget yesterday i thought of a possibility that AT&T had made an announcement to release our cappy Froyo and then (maybe at the last minute?) had learned of a updated release on the 21st and opted to wait for that new RC instead of having us update twice in one week..
Is that plausible?

yea, since it says 2.3.4 im not sure how true the article is. also i cant really find any announcement from at&t about it
No credible sources anywhere in the article.
AT&T's last press release stated that they would roll out Gingerbread updates to all Android devices released in 2011, plus to the Captivate, "starting in" July. Which means that only one device needed to receive an update in July for the press release to be true. (I Think that was the Atrix?)
And as others said, all of the leaks have been 2.3.5.
I am sure god knows when it will be coming since even AT&T does not know what the hell they are doing sitting on it till now

My take on it is they are in the process of releasing it but are working to correct some of the glaring issues we see now using the Rodgers rom. I don't think they want to release something that is just going to Bork up everyone's phones so they will wait until it is right as well they should. I would rather wait till it is perfect then to have them release something that isn't ready for primetime. Then the devs will have a good canvas to work from. Your mileage may vary.
