Help, recovery not installing update.zip - Captivate General

I had froyo running on here for about 2 days but decided to revert back to 2.1 for voodoo amongst other reasons, now I can't root since stock recovery won't install update.zip, instead it just says installation aborted.
If this has been discussed elsewhere before I apologize but I couldn't find it when I searched. Any help would be great....

So you are on 2.1 now? I would Odin one more time and try root again. Do a master clear as well and see if that helps.

Already reodined, and how long does Master Clear take? It seems to start then hang and never finish no matter how many times I've tried it in the past. And when I say hang I mean I've waited 45 minutes before...

When I rolled back from 2.2 I downloaded and flashed JF6 using the Odin 1-click. I then was able to use Clockworkmod to install my Nandroid backup of JH7. It should be as simple as that. I didn't even need to do a master clear.

You can't use clockwork mod without root though and since I can't install any update.zip I can't root...

How are you trying to root your phone? One click method our some other way?

Do you still have the update.zip from the Clockworkmod install? I flashed a non-rooted JF6 firmware and was able to load Clockwordmod to restore my backup. My JF6 flash wasn't rooted.

That's the beauty of Clockwork, if you backed up with Nandroid and you still have Clockwork as your update.zip then when you use your Nandroid backup the root is on the backup. No need to manually root after Odin.

uhh help lol

i wanted to flash my first rom so i was watching the cognition youtube video. I was rooted previously and didnt do anything but install clockwork.
when i used odin3 to revert to stock, then tried to root again instead of reinstalling the root it brought me to clockwork recovery.
how do i continue to root from there?
app sdcard:update.zip? or install zip from sdcard?

unroot confirmation

hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?
thanks!
edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...
You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.
sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?
No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.
Unroot zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vr7cmgg7qcdn14
Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.
There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.
A little extra help for me?

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.
Thank you so much for all your help, everybody.

Ready for 2.3.6., or am I?

Haven't really done much to my phone in a while but now that I got the sdcard issue fixed and the phone is stable I got on here to see if any new developments in the ulocked bootloader front and noticed we now have an update to 2.3.6. I wish it was ICS but that's coming, so I'd like to upgrade to the latest firmware and would like to know the best way I should go about it.
I'm currently rooted and have removed most of if not all of the bloatware, I've read that can cause problems when doing the OTA update. Is that true? If so, will doing a factory reset restore all that's needed to allow me to do the OTA?
I have no desire to flash lfabers deodexed 2.3.6 since the volume rocker isn't working right (or so I heard).
If a factory reset is not good enough should I install RSDLite 5.6 and flash the 2.3.5 FXZ and then do the OTA?
Let me know what you think as I'd like to make this happen as seamless as possible, don't need any surprises ya know?
This is covered in the noob thread, but...
Factory reset will not be good enough, since the OTA update actually looks for the bloatware to update.
Before you do anything, I recommend going into Atrix 2 Bootstrapper and creating a backup. You'll have to flash back to stock, update, then use the Motofail one click root in the noob thread. Then you can restore your data using the Bootstrapper.
I highly recommend the Supercharged V5_1 ROM and ICS theme, though.
Go ahead and take the jump, you won't be disappointed. Both the stock and V5 are very good
At first the deodexed 2.3.6 wasn't completely working because of a bad deodex, but lfaber06 got that all worked out.
If you want to update to stock 2.3.6 you will have to flash the 2.3.5 fxz first to get all your bloatware back.
Doing the OTA while rooted is fine, it will just remove your root and then you can just re-root.
Thanks guys...I have followed the steps outlined above (and in the referenced noob thread) and have successfully flashed the 2.3.5 fxz. Downloading the OTA as we speak.....Gonna get root back once that's installed then reinstall the CWM bootstrap and then restore from the backup I made at the beginning of this process and i'm good to go right?

Restoring the CWM backup will restore you back to 2.3.5. However, CWM is awesome enough that it will let you restore only parts of the backup. Boot into CWM, got to backup and restore, then go to Advanced Restore. If you select "Restore data" you will get back your apps and settings but keep 2.3.6.

Glad to help!
You guys are the ****!
The flashing/update/rooting/restoring process went off without a hitch and my device is back to how I had it setup before I started it. This was my first time ever using the CWM Recovery bootstrap and RSDLite so I was a bit nervous but after using then I realize that CWM Recovery and RSDLite is just like xRecovery and FlashTool for my previous SE Xperia X10.
Well it gets even easier then using RSD lite. Get jydaddy's RAZR boot into CWM exploit and install it! Well worth it. With his exploit everytime you boot you boot into CWM.All you do is perform one extra step to reboot. Say you flash something and it goes wrong , instead of having to boot into fastboot and flash the fastboot files with RSD you simply pull the battery, let it boot into CWM and perform a simple restore. Your phone never gets hooked up to a single cord and saves sooo much time for!!!

[Q] Restore backup to get ICS OTA Update?

Before I go wiping my device again in anticipation of getting the OTA ICS update...
I made a backup of my device when I was on the original Honeycomb build after rooting. I then switched to the Prime ROM. I'm assuming that I can just restore my Honeycomb update, get Root Keeper and install the OTA update. Am I correct, or is there something that will stop me from doing this?
Edit: Also, when restoring a backup using CWM, does it automatically wipe the device before restoring, or does that need to be done manually?
I believe you also need to restore the original recovery. The last time I tried to flash an upgrade on my rooted stock image using CWM, it rebooted after downloading and rejected the (non-stock) recovery. I'm guessing the ICS update will require a reboot into the stock recovery as well.

Indeed, no OTA update when original recovery is not installed.
I looked around a bit and saw how to unroot and restore to stock recovery... is there an easy way to just restore stock recovery? My plan was to restore my stock backup (to get off revolver) and then can go from CWM -> Stock, I just wasn't sure how to do the last part without undoing everything and fully returning to stock/no root.
It's also very possible that Root Keeper will not work since this is a new firmware form the ground up.

OTA Rootkeeper do not work if the system partition is formatted. Which is not the until now. Also people reported OTA rootkeeper worked to get root back after ICS update.
Otherwise use vipermod option 1 to root on ICS.

I just did exactly this. I had a nandroid backup of my original stock honeycomb so I restored the backup (I had some problems with the kernel after restoring from Revolver with some OC kernel, but flashing "plain" Revolver and then restoring the stock rom from the backup did the trick).
After that I made sure that everything is OK - I checked that I'm on the correct pieces of the software, in particular the kernel. All looked fine so I pulled OTA update, but before applying it I had to restore stock recovery. For this I used the stock recovery linked in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154947 Just downloaded it, placed it on my SD card, rebooted into CWM recovery and flashed it (pleas note - I only downloaded this single file, not needed to download any other files mentioned n the above thread since I already been on rooted stock rom).
After booting the TF again, I made sure that my root is backed up with Supercurio's Root Keeper, then I applied the OTA and after a few minutes I was happy user of ICSed Transformer.
Please note that what worked in my case may not work in yours though. So be careful, think twice, and keep in mind that it's your decision - your risk (and if something goes wrong - your brick )
BTW, all applications, data, etc. are still in place. Root was restored via Root Keeper. Then I downloaded some updates of applications and so far I'm fine.

[Q] Does a Nandroid backup back up recovery as well?

I have the Verizon Galaxy S3.
I had no modifications on my phone at all; it was stock everything. I wanted to install Hyperdrive on the phone so I went through the usual steps.
1) Root
2) Flash CWM
3) Create nandroid back up within CWM
4) Flash Hyperdrive ROM
I used Hyperdrive for a few weeks, but then I wanted to go back to stock, so I restored my backup. I was on stock for another few months and then OTA updates started coming in. I know that I cannot install OTA updates with a custom recovery. (I assumed I still had CWM)
So here is the thing...I thought that the backup I made was in the state of being rooted with CWM and stock ROM. So I assumed that after restoring the backup, I was rooted with CWM and stock ROM. So I double checked and found that I was not rooted and I had stock recovery installed. Does anyone know how this happened?

After you rooted and installed CWM did you let your phone bootup first, then boot back down into CWM then do the backup? Seems like you didn't do that. Your Root, CWM did not loaded when you run the CWM backup.

It does not backup your recovery, but you can backup your recovery partition separately. If you restore to stock it will still nag you to update. To stop it you need to freeze sdm1.0 and rename fwupdater.apk.
The update should fail, but if you're unlucky it'll go through enough to lock you down and stick you on 4.3. So either change the rom as soon as possible or freeze and rename the apks.

I believe I used a 1 step script to root and install my recovery. Something very similar to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825
I had my phone booted up, plugged into my PC and I allowed the 1-click script root it install CWM. Then I rebooted into CWM, and did a backup. So by not rebooting my phone after doing all this, then the root and CWM were not in the backup? Why is that the case? if I am able to boot into CWM, doesn't that mean the CWM already sits in my recovery partition? Thus, if I do a backup of it, shouldn't I get CWM in the recovery?

A nandroid doesn't backup your recovery, only your data, sd card, and caches. It's the same cwm installed by casual.

If that's the case, then how could I possibly be on stock recovery? I definitely needed CWM to install Hyperdrive and to create the Nandroid backup that I used to restore.
Currently I'm not running latest cwm, but I'm runing TWRP and it does backup recovery and efs by default. I'm sure that cwm can do the same but is it set by default? I don't know. here the info I found on cwm:

Some roms are capable of reinstalling a stock recovery. Sometimes if it's not taken out of a rom, it will sense you have a custom recovery and reinstall the stock recovery over it.
Most of the time it's taken out of the touchwiz roms, but I guess in this case it wasn't.
That's the only way it could happen.
Additionally, that isn't even cwm, that's philz touch recovery, those features are unique to that recovery only.
