Haven't really done much to my phone in a while but now that I got the sdcard issue fixed and the phone is stable I got on here to see if any new developments in the ulocked bootloader front and noticed we now have an update to 2.3.6. I wish it was ICS but that's coming, so I'd like to upgrade to the latest firmware and would like to know the best way I should go about it.
I'm currently rooted and have removed most of if not all of the bloatware, I've read that can cause problems when doing the OTA update. Is that true? If so, will doing a factory reset restore all that's needed to allow me to do the OTA?
I have no desire to flash lfabers deodexed 2.3.6 since the volume rocker isn't working right (or so I heard).
If a factory reset is not good enough should I install RSDLite 5.6 and flash the 2.3.5 FXZ and then do the OTA?
Let me know what you think as I'd like to make this happen as seamless as possible, don't need any surprises ya know?
This is covered in the noob thread, but...
Factory reset will not be good enough, since the OTA update actually looks for the bloatware to update.
Before you do anything, I recommend going into Atrix 2 Bootstrapper and creating a backup. You'll have to flash back to stock, update, then use the Motofail one click root in the noob thread. Then you can restore your data using the Bootstrapper.
I highly recommend the Supercharged V5_1 ROM and ICS theme, though.
Go ahead and take the jump, you won't be disappointed. Both the stock and V5 are very good
At first the deodexed 2.3.6 wasn't completely working because of a bad deodex, but lfaber06 got that all worked out.
If you want to update to stock 2.3.6 you will have to flash the 2.3.5 fxz first to get all your bloatware back.
Doing the OTA while rooted is fine, it will just remove your root and then you can just re-root.
Thanks guys...I have followed the steps outlined above (and in the referenced noob thread) and have successfully flashed the 2.3.5 fxz. Downloading the OTA as we speak.....Gonna get root back once that's installed then reinstall the CWM bootstrap and then restore from the backup I made at the beginning of this process and i'm good to go right?

Restoring the CWM backup will restore you back to 2.3.5. However, CWM is awesome enough that it will let you restore only parts of the backup. Boot into CWM, got to backup and restore, then go to Advanced Restore. If you select "Restore data" you will get back your apps and settings but keep 2.3.6.

Glad to help!
You guys are the ****!
The flashing/update/rooting/restoring process went off without a hitch and my device is back to how I had it setup before I started it. This was my first time ever using the CWM Recovery bootstrap and RSDLite so I was a bit nervous but after using then I realize that CWM Recovery and RSDLite is just like xRecovery and FlashTool for my previous SE Xperia X10.
Well it gets even easier then using RSD lite. Get jydaddy's RAZR boot into CWM exploit and install it! Well worth it. With his exploit everytime you boot you boot into CWM.All you do is perform one extra step to reboot. Say you flash something and it goes wrong , instead of having to boot into fastboot and flash the fastboot files with RSD you simply pull the battery, let it boot into CWM and perform a simple restore. Your phone never gets hooked up to a single cord and saves sooo much time for!!!

hi there, this is out of the update question
can u tell me how can i backup the whole android (stock) system?
thanks alot ^^""
Rom manager. Flash Clockwork recovery then boot into recovery. Use volume buttons to select backup and restore choose backup and let CwR do its work.

hi there, thanks for the reply,
do u mean i have to download the Rom Manager, install it, and then go into CWM?
Me either
I have NOT received anything for an update. 100% stock, never rooted or unlocked wi-fi only........
I haven't received it yet either, I"m on stock, rooted, but still, trying to manually update now, having some issues though.
And for the wifi xoom I'm pretty sure they said it would be a few weeks before that was pushed out however they plan on doing that.
There's instructions to do that manually too though if needed on here.
hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?
thanks!
edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...
You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.
sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?
No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.
Unroot zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vr7cmgg7qcdn14
Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.
There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.
A little extra help for me?

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.
Thank you so much for all your help, everybody.
Before I go wiping my device again in anticipation of getting the OTA ICS update...
I made a backup of my device when I was on the original Honeycomb build after rooting. I then switched to the Prime ROM. I'm assuming that I can just restore my Honeycomb update, get Root Keeper and install the OTA update. Am I correct, or is there something that will stop me from doing this?
Edit: Also, when restoring a backup using CWM, does it automatically wipe the device before restoring, or does that need to be done manually?
I believe you also need to restore the original recovery. The last time I tried to flash an upgrade on my rooted stock image using CWM, it rebooted after downloading and rejected the (non-stock) recovery. I'm guessing the ICS update will require a reboot into the stock recovery as well.

Indeed, no OTA update when original recovery is not installed.
I looked around a bit and saw how to unroot and restore to stock recovery... is there an easy way to just restore stock recovery? My plan was to restore my stock backup (to get off revolver) and then can go from CWM -> Stock, I just wasn't sure how to do the last part without undoing everything and fully returning to stock/no root.
It's also very possible that Root Keeper will not work since this is a new firmware form the ground up.

OTA Rootkeeper do not work if the system partition is formatted. Which is not the until now. Also people reported OTA rootkeeper worked to get root back after ICS update.
Otherwise use vipermod option 1 to root on ICS.

I just did exactly this. I had a nandroid backup of my original stock honeycomb so I restored the backup (I had some problems with the kernel after restoring from Revolver with some OC kernel, but flashing "plain" Revolver and then restoring the stock rom from the backup did the trick).
After that I made sure that everything is OK - I checked that I'm on the correct pieces of the software, in particular the kernel. All looked fine so I pulled OTA update, but before applying it I had to restore stock recovery. For this I used the stock recovery linked in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154947 Just downloaded it, placed it on my SD card, rebooted into CWM recovery and flashed it (pleas note - I only downloaded this single file, not needed to download any other files mentioned n the above thread since I already been on rooted stock rom).
After booting the TF again, I made sure that my root is backed up with Supercurio's Root Keeper, then I applied the OTA and after a few minutes I was happy user of ICSed Transformer.
Please note that what worked in my case may not work in yours though. So be careful, think twice, and keep in mind that it's your decision - your risk (and if something goes wrong - your brick )
BTW, all applications, data, etc. are still in place. Root was restored via Root Keeper. Then I downloaded some updates of applications and so far I'm fine.
ive been rooted for a long time now, i have a Moto Attrix 2. recently i did the updated to the 2.3.6 but before i did, i went ahead and did the perminent root method. this helped me keep root. now i want to jump into Roms. i'm not new to this. i had a Droid X proir to the Attrix. so i kinda know my way around. sorta..aha, ive read the process of the rom i want to install on to my phone which is supercharge Rom
So do you have a question, I couldn't tell from your post
awe man, i'm sorry about that.
my question...actually the question is about the process needed to be taken. i read thru the steps to flash supercharge rom V5 but, i have no clue to where start from since i have not flash a rom on this device.? so i'm startin off from scretch i'm sorry about that, i shoulda proof read that..lol, before i posted.
Step 1)Install CW recovery from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346977
Step 2) Run it and reboot into recovery
Step 3) MAKE A BACKUP! I repeat MAKE A BACKUP! this is important in case something goes wrong while flashing a new rom you can flash your backup and return your phone to normal.
Once you have learned to do that you can now start flashing roms. Just download the roms and follow the directions in the roms. ALL ROMS REQUIRE CW Recovery to install so you'll get used to it. I just wanted u to follow those 3 steps before you start flashing roms. People forget to make backups and they end up losing all their info.
Read the BEGINNERS GUIDE it has all the info you could ever need.

Dont worry about ever doing the forever root there's a root method for 2.3.6
Before flashing any rom I suggest you flash the 2.3.5 FXZ and update to 2.3.6 and then root it. This way you start from a fresh base and don't have any random bugs that would take a long time to hunt down and fix due to coming from a non-stock rom.
Ask away. What questions do you have? I recommend installing CWM on Recovery zip (and download the remove script while your at it you might want that). Revoke root rights to Bootstrap after installing the on boot zip. It takes one cycled reboot for the script to take effect. Make sure it works before installing any ROMs. Read the Read Me file for supercharged before installing. That's a few tips from me. Oh, if you have a windows based PC install and know how to use RSD lite and the fxz file in case of a disaster. In other words incase you can't recover from some unforeseen event using your phone and CWM Recovery alone. Make sure your battery is fully charged before installing a new ROM. Off the top of my head those tips come to mind.

Because if you dont deny bootstrap SU after FLASHING CWM ON STARTUP zip then you will not get CWM everytime you boot up, it's a bug. So if you want CWM everytime you boot your phone you have to deny bootstrap SU. Other than that IDK the exact technical details on why it does this, it just does.

Sorry KEB - not to step on your toes or anything, but...
Get and install the A2 Bootstrap from here.
You can now boot into "Recovery" mode through the Bootstrap app. You can test it first or you can just go and get the CWM on Boot zip files here. Download the two zip attachments in the first post to your sdcard.
Then open the A2 Bootstapper app - click the top button, then ok, then the 2nd button.. and viola! It will boot into recovery.
Then wipe your cache partition, and dalvik cache, and install zip from sdcard. "...Global..." zip makes it boot into recovery every time you reboot, and the "..Remove.." zip removes it.
Good luck. Happy reading!

You... need a custom recovery in order to take and restore any backups.
Why were you messing with things like this without a way to restore your backups? You need a proper recovery in order to do these things.
Perhaps try unlocking & flashing CWM/TWRP. You've got nothing to lose at this point...
you might have to unlock and flash one now i dont know what bootstrapper you used but i dont think one has been made for the Q since we have a unlockable bootloader

go to the settings/system update and click on update motorola software... you should get the update downloaded again. oh, make anothere backup with twrp to your sdcard BEFORE you update. and after you update also... if you like., it will save you a hell of a hassel, as you well see..
Just to amend that ... you need completely stock system and boot partitions as well as a stock recovery or the update will fail on install.

Okay do i get that from shabbys files and flash? I think i have a stock system i used the stock odexed files from here to restore my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
That link won't load but assuming your system partition is bone stock and odexed you're good there. If not yogi hosted his a few pages back and I can vouch as well that those work perfectly. You'll for sure need the stock recovery and to be on the safe side I'd flash the stock boot partition, both img files are hosted with shabby's files.
Here are the steps:
1. Restore your stock system partition
2. Download stock recovery.img (and boot.img recommended) to your adb folder.
3. Reboot into bootloader/fastboot mode
-adb reboot bootloader
4. Flash stock recovery (and boot partition recommended)
- fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
- fastboot flash boot boot.img
- fastboot reboot
5. Accept OTA prompt or force update via settings.
6. Once it finishes downloading, it'll prompt to install. Accept it and it'll power off your phone and apply the update. Assuming your system, recovery, and boot partitions are correct the update will install with no problems.
7. Phone will guide you through some prompts and update profile and PRL once it loads. Once this completes it's recommended that you force update those again as the PRL the update downloads seems to be old.
You should be golden from there. If you wish to re-root, simply reflash your recovery (twrp or cwm), reboot into it and install the superSU zip again.
***NOTE*** Arrrghhh's kernel (at least up to .05) isn't completely compatable with this update. Flashing it WILL mess up your wifi, and we haven't found a fix for that other than reverting to the old software and starting the update over.
