Article about XDA Developing - General Topics

Hey, I have created an article on XDA Developing and links to the forum to try to bring some more members to this site and to help out. I tried to post as much information as I possibly could to the article. Maybe you can tell me what you think?
Here is the article:

XDA (Xtended Design Architecture) Developing is great to learn if you have a windows mobile device. Reason being is because Windows Mobile is new and still growing, so there is not much you can do with your phone, in this case I have the HTC HD2 which is a great phone with a lot of potential, but you are limited to what you can do on it, this comes in when trying to find apps, as Windows Mobile is very limited on apps and most cost a lot of money. Now you may think a couple of bucks for an app, but no, the most expensive Windows Mobile app I have found in the marketplace was 69.99 for a image organizer/tool. It didn’t do anything magnificent and to me, definitely not worth the money. So I looked around into trying to do more with my Windows Mobile device and found out about XDA Developing.
I visited the Windows Mobile website and came to find that they offer free tools to start creating your own apps for your Windows Mobile phone, even though the tools were free, there is a cost if you want to make money from your app by putting it in the market. So you can create apps for your own liking and use, but if you wanted to put it in the maketplace for others to buy/download there was a one time fee of $99 dollars. Now I thought it was reasonable as long as you get the free tools. So I downloaded the tools and got everything running, but there was a lot to learn. The Windows Mobile website gave some dummy codes for developing but did not have any guides on how to learn how to start building. I was then searching and searching until I found a great website known as “xda-developers.com” which is a website with great forums and discussion on Windows Mobile devices, they also do some discussion on “Andriod” OS as well. There forum is a great place to inhance on what you can do on your phone. As for me I used the forum to find out how to develop my own apps, find apps others have made, they also have custom ROMS and RADIO (cooked) which is sort of like a “Jailbreak” and there are many ways, with a lot of help and support along the way. Thanks to this website I have brought my phone to its full potential and I am very happy with it.
I have fixed a lot of problems I have had with my device as well, such as “freezing, bricking, OS fails, and much more” which got me to thinking my phone would have to be returned. I think that Windows Mobile should have some of the XDA-Developers code a new version of HTC Sense & Windows Mobile, just to make it more stable and bring more customer satisfaction. If you have any problems with your Windows or Android device I would highly recommend using the sites I have listed above. Even if you are just looking to get more out of your phone.

Is *XDA* a valid generic term?

Hey all,
Just a quick question for members of this community - I'm in the process of setting up a news resource site focusing on windows mobile devices and wanted to get some feedback on the usage of the term 'XDA'.
It seems that, for the most part, this community has accepted XDA as a generic term for a mobile device which runs the Windows Mobile OS (feel free to correct me if I've misinterpreted).
Personally I prefer the look of XDA over PPC or WMD but before I go and purchase a domain I just wanted to put my ear to the ground and see what people (in the know) think.
Thanks,
~ elroy
In my opinion the term XDA is mostly known by enthusiasts who know the roots of the device. If you were to start a website I would use a term that is more common to people who are new to this area such as PPC, WM, or even a brand name such as this site has done. This would help improve the traffic of your site for sure.

Personally, I would keep looking for a name. XDA is just the branding O2 uses for their PPCs and Smartphones. XDA is in the name of this site just because the XDAs were what the "founders" had gotten their hands on first to work on their encryption projects.
For the most part, members here refer to their devices by their HTC codenames. I haven't really seen anyone call their device an XDA.
I see what you mean though. I believe you might think that XDA is as generic for the PPC as Xerox is for the copier, but it really isn't. In my opinion, most people (even including the bulk of the members here) would just be confused by the terminology.
Just a thought. Good luck!
Thanks guys.
I'm leaning towards PPC (based on your feedback) at this point.

In case anyone is interested I've finally gotten the site *kinda* the way I want it. I still need to work on some of the code (my php skills suck, and that's being kind).
Anyway - on the advice given (above) I went with PPC in the title over XDA... and end up with:
http://www.PPCmine.com
The site is meant to be a resource for bloggers and people who run sites and are looking for links to up to date stuff on a specific subject (in this can PPCs)... or for people, like me, who are complete news junkies.
Feed back is most welcome.

xda is wallaby
I was also thinking about this few times...
Choosing the right domain name depends also on habits of people you are targeting. IMO if you target worldwide, PPC is the most culturally neutral and everybody interested into this kind of devices will find that.
In Czech Republic, the most commonly used term for HTC and similar devices is "MDA" - just because firts wallaby here was called MDA by t-mobile (previously paegas). Even who is not interested into PPC technology will understand MDA term and will know what RU speaking about.
Try to perform search how people think about our devices in a country you are targeting - and you will have the right name. Remember - people should understand name and they will come. If they cannot imagine what is hidden under "WMD" or such term (not used here in CZ, seen this for the first time here), they will simply miss your page...

Training website

Anyone seen the offical windows trainig webiste, i signed up and got some free stuff tho i think you have to work in industry to get it. Its not very advanced compared to stuff on here but is good for neewbies to WM and also has a forum which is monitored by microsoft. Good way to suggest changes but obviously doesnt directly affect HTC.
Anyway it is
www.windowsmobiletraining.com and the promo code i had was UK138-2
This website is actually pretty interesting if you want to fill your resume with pretty tech certificates. I just completed my first course!! PS Thanks for bringing this to our attention, seems interesting.
You don't need to work with cellphones to sign up. I signed up just as someone who uses a windows mobile phone and i have access to all the courses.
I'm planning on taking all the courses because i'm pretty sure theres something completely obvious that i dont know after using winmo for about 5 years.
Well, I just completed every course on offer, and I guarantee that there are a few things I didn't know after years of use, from 2003SE to now. The courses are fairly easy, and you have multiple goes at completely them (possibly infinite) and also go in the draw to win free ****. That is always a plus.
I recommend it: you might learn something you didn't know yesterday.
PS Check out my new, completely wankish signature, lol
Windows Mobile Training
This site is pretty useful. I learnt a whole load of stuff and got a certificate signed by Peter Knook (whoever he is). And if Peter says I'm a qualified Windows Mobile Specialist then who am I to argue. I'm going to go and wait for my free copy of PGR3 to arrive.

XDA-devs on marketplace?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, i already did a quick google search and didn't find anything...
But i was just thinking, there are always great apps that i find honestly every week on XDA, mostly because they're just burried under pages, or maybe dont have the same wild popularity that ifart does. But does anyone else think it'd be a great idea if we could maybe somehow take donations from XDA users, and then use this money to register XDA as a developer on the Microsofts upcoming Marketplace store? Maybe it could be turned into something where we the users actually vote which applications should be submitted on a weekly or montly basis. I just think there's so many great apps on XDA that it'd be a great way to get them, and xda-devs as well, some exposure. I'm sure there's lots of people on XDA that have developed great apps whether they be keyboards, or scroll modification tools, or other utilities that may not want to spend 99 bucks and dont think they will actually develop 6 apps.
Chime in guys, i dunno if i'm crazy...but i think it might be a good idea.
I suspect that the first major hurdle would be this:
You are able to download so many great apps from XDA-Devs because they are generally free, and that is why people are allowed to post them here. If they were not free, I am pretty sure they can no longer be advertised on XDA-Devs, correct me if I am wrong.
So if there was a way to recoupe the $99 join fee when all people are doing is offering free apps and taking no profit, them I am sure people would be willing to consider it. I also believe that after you have uploaded six apps, then it is another $99 for every app after, no?
It is a good idea, and deserves some thought, I just can't think of how to make it viable. XDA is popular enough that if there was a way to make money from it, it would have made its own marketplace

[Q] How To Get Free Phones for App Development?

I recently posted a thread on how I can start programming geared towards the mobile platforms.
I would like to develop apps for more than one mobile platform. However I just have access to an Android device (SE Xperia X10), iPhone 4, and an iPad 2.
Smartphones are not like candies, that you can go pickup at a cheap store.
I mean how and where can I and other people who want to develop apps for specific platforms get free phones for testing and using the apps we develop?
The emulator that is included with the SDKs are not always the best way to test.
Any suggestions? All help is appreciated
EDIT: Forgot to mention that recently Windows Phone called over WebOS developers to develop applications on the WP platform, and Windows gave the developers free devices. But there are not many WebOS devs out there..
The best and fastest way to require a "demo" phone is doing the following.
Just get in touch with the companies that are creating the phones.
Explain your development and give them a nice overview on what your app is, what it does and how things go.
Make sure you don't demand a phone but wish to test run it on certain specific devices with key features that are a "+" in your app.
I think you'll have a chance to receive a demo phone.
Btw don't expect you'll be able to keep that phone forever.
I recently contacted HP to request an Elite-book from them for business usage.
Explained the plans and deals and after a few days i received one.
I need to return it by end of this year.(aawww )
Did same thing for some phones for my company
I think it depends on what you wanna test and how high your requirements are.
Also i think it's best to mail on behalf of someone working in the industry or on behalf of a company.
They had my company info in case of argument.
Sites like XDA got enough rep to request them and be trusted.
Individual guy asking for a phone is "50/50" chance. (depends on the person processing your mail and your info & app your working on)
One thread is enough: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1237030

[Q] Publishing WP7.x xaps

Hi, quite recently i dived into wp app development and id love to post my apps somewhere so people could try them and provide some response. But if i got it right theres a 99 bucks fee to be able to post to the ms marketplace. Is there any other nonofficial or whatever marketplace or something?
Tldr: where to post my xaps for people to try without spending fortune?
Sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA

There are a few routes you can go. The downside is that the users (including you) who you wish to use your app will have to be developer unlocked at the minimum (There's also InterOp Unlocked and Fully Unlocked. You'll have to search the forum to find out information on that). There is a homebrew marketplace named Bazaar (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383648) and W.I.N.C.O App Store (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668020)
It's always best to create a thread to display your app so that users can know what the purpose of the app is and a place for the users to go to for support. Also, creating beta testing pools helps out a lot. See what I did for R1ng3d in my signature.
I hope this helped out,
snickler
