I've been downloading a few tunes to the phone and have come up with a strange issue.
What happens is that the tune will 'jump' and miss bit like a cd or vinyl jumpin when playing the tune through TF3D and windows media player. However, when it is used a a ring tone, there is no issue with 'jumping'
Strange as playing the same file on my pc, there's no jumping either.... go figure.
Am using the standard Vodafone ROM which even does exactly the same with the updated vf rom, very frustrating.
Anyone else come across this?
Thanks for reading.

Its a lag when Manila is pulling it from your storage card.
Letting the tab fully update before playing the song may help.
Also make sure you're not running too many other programs at the same time, which can cause a lag due to limited memory resources
Hi Bruce, this makes no difference either. Have also looked at the various threads on this issue and tried the various 'fixes' including the 'hotfix' from htc and still no difference.

Hmmm, not sure then.
I listen to music all the time on my music tab and the only time I have issues is if something else opens on the device, like I get an e-mail or something.
Check your task manager and see what else is running and also how much free RAM you have while playing music.
I'm not sure what ROM you're running but that may have something to do with it as well.
Also, the SD card may not be transfering data very quickly for some reason.
Have you tested video?
Wish I could be more help.
Think I may have worked out what the issue is.
Most mp3's play ok, the ones that I am having trouble with are only recorded at 16Kbps everything else is above this which doesn't seem to have a problem.
For info Bruce my ROM is 5.2.20771 (Build 20771.1.4.6)
Get ready for yet another post where I sound like a grumpy old man (hint: it's because I am).
I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I loaded my current book onto my Shift running MikShifted-G and started listening to my latest book. I love the music thing on the lock screen. But what frustrates me is that sometimes (ok, all the time) when I stop in the middle of a track, when I go to resume later, it restarts the track. My guess is that either this is a quirk of the music player, in which case I don't know if it's a Sense issue or a MikShifted-G issue, or if it's the task manager that's included in MSG killing my music app and resetting that. I can't figure out any way in that task manager to tell it not to kill things. I'm thinking about just removing that, since I've never really felt a strong need for a task manager app.
Any good advice?
I use PowerAmp and it has an option to keep it in memory. I use WidgetLocker with the PowerAmp widget and there some hiccups but they're minimal, mostly to do with opening the app after pressing on the widget. Not sure about the task killer, I think I've read that ROMs based on 2.3 use an aggressive policy on apps in memory.

personally, i happen to like the stock ui of this phone, so i didnt want to flash a custom rom or anything like that. i kept searching for different ways to improve performance and limit bugginess, and here is what i have come up with. first, root is a must for this phone. so is cwm recovery. the first thing i did was boot into cwm recovery and run fix permissions. this stopped the constant rebooting, but i was still experiencing the vibrating and force closing problem. i began deleting bloatware apps that i wasnt using. i installed an app called total commander for android, which has many different wonderful functions, one of which is mounting any partition as r/w. when you are done modifying a partition, you can also mount it back to r/o. so i removed most of tmobiles and samsungs bloatware apps, such as device carbon, zipwhip, telenav, group texting, qwik video chat, twitter, myspace, swype, and maybe a few i cant remember. each time i deleted system apps, i went back to cwm and fixed permissions again. now so there is no confusion, i didnt fix permissions after deleting every single app. say i would delete five or six apps, when i was done deleting them all, i would fix permissions. the reason for this is that i found that after deleting system apps, the system would still have permssions stored for those apps, and i believe this caused system errors similar to registry errors in windows. so, after deleting most unneccessary system apps, i saw more improvements, but there was still a bit of buginess. i was looking for something on google one day when i ran across a forum for the samsung vibrant where a member had issues with the same buzzing and force closing i had experienced. it was a buzz, a pause, then buzz-buzz-buzz. another member revealed that there were three main causes of this issue, which were androids native gmail client, wifi, and the stock android browser. i dont use wifi, but i got rid of the android browser and gmail client. i installed a third party email client from the market called maildroid, and use opera mobile as my default browser. i havent had any more problems except with two apps. one is slacker radio which is embedded in the media room app. it froze my phone every time i tried to load it. not a big loss, since i dont use it. just cant delete it without deleting media room and i use media room as my music player. but it still works fine as long as i dont open slacker. the other one is media hub. also froze my phone every time i opened it. not a big loss there either since i download most of my music from free sites. i deleted it. the only time i have force closes is when in settings i accidentally hit drivesmart, and thats because i deleted the drivesmart app. so im on stock ui and no crashes, freezes, lags or force closes. been about a week since my last unexplained crash. this might not work for everyone, but it might be a start.
If any of this does help anyone out there who wants to stay on the stock rom, feel free to reply or hit the thanks button
This does help me, but I think I'll wait for the back to basics rom, see how that goes.

oh yeah i gut all Samsung and t-mobile aps from my phone, but i use custom roms as well. I havn-t had a force-close in over a week and the last one i had was with the stock browser.
ive uninstalled
gallary
browser
tmobile carbon
and all unused aps drivesmart ect.
I havent had a problem with gallery. I use it to view my pictures. the gallery on this phone is quite nice compared to my last phone.
yeah mine kept freezing, not sure why so i said enough is enough and i dont really use it too much
Good info, but can I make a request?
It is harder than you know what to read!
PLEASE edit the OP to have paragraphs!
Android's gallery is a joke. Download Quickpic.
I suggest PowerAmp over the stock music player.
Another source of issues is the TouchWiz launcher. Nix it.
That just leaves Google Maps. Unfortunately, there are no good alternatives...
I personally havent had any problems with any other apps. i like the stock apps that i actually use, such as gallery, the stock music player, google maps, and TouchWiz. A lot of people bash the TW launcher, but i really dont think its the problem. i dont have any problems with it at all. i have tried other launchers, but i end up ditching them because they are larger than the stock launcher and use more RAM. i avoid using 3rd party apps over stock apps unless absolutely necessary, as in the case of gmail and android browser. getting rid of those apps stopped the buzzing and force closing for me. the reason i avoid using 3rd party apps over stock apps is because they take up space and sometimes use more ram. the TW launcher is actually quite small compared to other launchers, being only a few kb in size where other launchers are on average 2 to 5 mb. the most recent launcher i tried was WP7 launcher, which imitates the windows 7 ui. i liked it, but google navigation froze in that launcher. back to stock launcher, and navigation worked fine again. i know that i personally dont have any problems with TW launcher, gallery, or the stock music player, and i like all of them.
Meh.
The gallery takes forever and depends on the media scanner. Quickpic starts up faster shuts completely down when it's finished.
As for memory, 3rd party launchers play very nice with the system and let go of their resources when the OS asks them to. Can't say the same thing for TouchWiz.
You'll also want to run Voodoo sound and the PowerVR plug in from Chainfire.
Of course, you're free to do any slow thing you want with your device. It just won't perform as well as it could.
you are completely free to have your own opinions. but in my experience, im not having problems with the stock apps. in fact, i reinstalled the stock browser and gmail and still no problems. my phone works fine for the way i use it. you may use your phone in different ways or for different things than i do, so 3rd party solutions may be necessary for you. im not having any problems with my phone, so they arent necessary for me. you keep saying oh you'll want to do this or you'll want to do that. maybe you need all these 3rd party apps because you dont know how to manage your stock apps. almost every time i am finished doing anything with my phone, i go to task manager, exit all apps, and hit clear memory. every couple of days, i clear my app cache. i use optimize android toolbox for that. i dont even reboot my phone on a daily basis, and still, no problems. no lags, freezes, force closes, crashes, or random reboots. not a single one. i would say thats top performance in my book. now, enough said.
i feel like you two are going at it, you both have your own opinions, i side with the stock apps being poorly written and potentially causing issues. Im using gallary again because i like how it pulls pics from online, but for the browser i use opera mini just because i like the layout better (no hate towards the stock one)
I remove every apk that is not needed for what i do with my phone, including blutooth and some others that ive discovered do not inhibit the functioning of the device. This is all because im just a huge nerd with OCD and like to play around with things and have them running as clutter free as possible. Remember guys this is why we all use android, so we have the freedom to customize the device to our own needs.
i just want to say one more thing. when i started this thread, the information in my OP wasnt intended to be a guide for getting this phone to peak performance or to make it the fastest or best that it could be. it was intended as a starting place for those who simply want to get their phone running PROPERLY with the stock rom/ui. PROPERLY means without any glitches, force closes, freezes, lags, crashes or random reboots. there is a big difference between PROPERLY and BEST. for instance, take a car that comes out of the factory and has some problems. you can correct the problems and get it running PROPERLY, or you can supe it up and get it running the BEST/FASTEST. some people are happy with something just working properly, while others want the best/fastest. so for anyone who wants info on getting this phone running the best/fastest, feel free to start your own thread. this thread is for info on getting this phone WORKING PROPERLY. THANK YOU.
Yeah ok. I just think discussion ia a great forum for innovation. If everyone just stayed on topic all the time no new ideals would ever have a medium to incubate in. I'm sorry if we've irritated you, it definitely wasn't my intention. Were all on the same team here.

thats the only thing that irritated me. i repeatedly stated that certain stock apps were working fine for me. this guy repeatedly told me to replace the apps that i said were working fine for me. if you dont like those apps, fine. do whatever you want with your phone. dont keep insisting that i copy you. and the comment about doing any slow thing you want is what really irked me. i feel like that makes it sound like im an idiot for not doing what he tells me to do. i took it as disrespectful. i got no beef with anything or anyone else here.
if any of the apps that this guy insisted i replace were actually causing problems, i think i would still be having problems. especially touchwiz, which everyone thinks is so terrible, which isnt causing me any problems at all.
i think it only causes issues with memory, it doesnt manage it well. But i think you aid you close apps manually so it wouldnt be as bad.
Manually closing programs doesn't allow the garbage collector to do its job. Over time, small amounts of memory tied to hanging handles will add up and you will encounter issues.
Once again, it's your device. If you are happy, do what you like.

so how does the performance compare to custom roms like gingerclone or glorious overdose? (I ask since I am considering buying a sidekick, and want to know how much tweaking i'll need to do)
okay orange808, if you want to continue insisting you're right, then fine, you're right. now drop it. as far as which custom rom is the best, i cant answer since i havent flashed a rom.
What in the world did HTC do to Android ICS mulitasking!? Apps seem to be completely removed from cache every single time they're closed for ~30 seconds. They also no longer re-open in the same state that you left them! If I leave the browser, it needs to reload the web page. If I leave a game, I need to start from the beginning. If I pause and exit Slacker radio for a minute, the app closes and I can't even resume my music with the headphones button! I need to re-open the app and start playing all over again.
With my old Galaxy Nexus I never had ANY of these issues and multitasking was clearly the best of any smartphone on the market. HTC has completely crippled this device and it's becoming more and more frustrating (push email notifications & sms notifications are a whole other mess). It seems HTC has created Sense to focus more on preserving battery than focusing on creating a good user experience. The first few days with the phone were great but as more and more of these "instances" pop up, this phone is beginning to seem less and less powerful and intuitive.

So much so that multitasking seemed significantly more advanced on my iPhone 4S. This is supposed to be Android's strong suit!
Ya its not even like saved state. Its just a new icon for your previously opened apps.
This is one area where I wish I still had my gnex. HOwever everything else is better on this phone.
With root available, you can probably tweak this a bit with the likes of auto killer, or a similar min free tweaking app.
Music works fine, hell it even remember my last song and position played after a reboot, using htc music.
I made two videos of the problem:
If I just tried to copy and paste these links and make this post on my one x it would have never worked, would have kept reloading the page and forget everything I typed. Lol.

HTC Music is an HTC developed app so it's possible they tweaked their own app to work well. I listen to most of my music online and prefer Slacker radio which has been nothing short of a disaster with this device b/c of the multitasking issues.

Does streaming google music play(app) work in the background ( while using navigation or a browser ) ?
With auto killer, i just tested, and i can keep 3 apps running in the memory. Try it out.
edit* scratch that, i tryed after a few minutes of inactivity, reloads.
I believe the reason they are using such aggressive memory management is because on the One X International Version Sense would constantly crash and you would see the "loading" screen.
Frankly I dont know which is more annoying...

Music works in the background for me while it's playing (even Slacker). But if I pause the music for a minute to go do something, it's impossible for me to begin playing from where I left off and I have to re-open the app and start playing a song from the beginning. It's very annoying.

Oh it still does that also, but it isn't a crash, it happens when you go back to the home screen, you just see "loading"
I am just hoping the phone is still fast and has good battery life once/if this is fixed.

Thank you for portraying what I mean...but your issue is even WORSE than mine. If I switch back to an app THAT quickly it won't reload like that. For me, it has to be around 30 seconds.
Lets hope we get root soon. I'm sure some custom roms will cure this issue

Root is already possible since yesterday. Custom ROM is not possible until we get bootloader unlocked.
i'm guessing that's why my simiclock doesn't update after i don't touch my phone for a long period of time (overnight)
In the developer settings, there is an option to set the limit of background processes. The default is set to "standard limit." Does anyone know what this limit is, or if changing it to 4 processes might actually help?
Edit: just tried and it clearly does not help.

Try going to settings developer opinions and look under apps and make sure those settings are to your liking. It has a setting for turning off apps right away and how many apps can run in the background.
Edit: I keep on going in and out of apps trying this but unless I'm out for like 5 min its not making me start over Pandora. Try clicking and unclicking apps close right away.

The issue definitely needs addressing, and I'm sure it's not a "what was HTC thinking" situation so much as a bug that they'll fix.
I've noticed the issue myself, but it hasn't annoyed me to the point of complaining. Maybe it's better on my phone. It'll almost certainly depend on what background services you have running. By that, I mean GMail, Email, Twitter/Facebook updates, playing music. Also, some apps seem to handle multitasking pretty well. NFS Hot Pursuit was obviously coded to accommodate Android multitasking, as I can quit it, check my email/twitter, maybe browse a website, and when I go back to NFS, it's on the pause screen and I can pick up the race where I left off.
Different processes receive different priorities as far as Android memory management go. If you're playing music (in HTC Music, Play Music, PowerAmp, etc,) then Android recognizes that this app is actively doing something, even if you consecutively load up every other app on your phone. You can go back to the music app and it won't have to reload anything. That's just an example. Other apps can do this too, as long as the programmers coded it right. I'm guessing NFS Hot Pursuit does this as I've never had a problem with it.
Of course, none of that excuses the poor multitasking, since the gnex seems much better at it. (And I'm assuming you people who have tried both have been running virtually identical apps on each phone.)
I don't know a ton about memory management and multitasking in Android, so I could only speculate as to where the problem really lies. Could be that Sense takes up too much memory (surprise surprise!), could be that HTC made the memory management too agressive, could be weird other things that I don't even know about, such as some sort of time-out for background apps.
I'm going to do some playing around and let you know if I can find any ways to improve it easily.
Hi Everyone,
Currently using the ViperX ROM, and loving the ability to toggle minfree on the fly. This isn't exclusive to this ROM but I've always had a problem playing music on the One-X, which I find amusing.
Basically if I open the player, and background it, it'll randomly kill itself. I might get 30 seconds out of it, I might get an hour.
Not only that, but I pretty much can't use anything else. If I go on a webpage - dead. Music killed.
What are the optimal settings for keeping my backgrounded apps alive? I'm happy enough to lose some 'free' RAM in order to constantly keep my music alive, even if I have to manually kill it I'm okay with this.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone.

What music player are you using? Either the app itself or the ROM might be the problem, I'd say nandroid and then flash something else to see if you have the same problem.
I don't know how I keep doing this, keep getting into the wrong forums! Really sorry about that
As for the music player, it happens with a few different ones. The one I use most is actually a YouTube streamer - it streams the audio without the video, and works backgrounded too.
Long shot here, bit have you checked settings, developer options for kill back ground apps after so many are running or kill stuff not on screen..?
If not something like that, it's over my head.
