[Q] will the Captivate will get an 2.2 update? - Captivate General

if so when it will be?
can i get the OTA if i dont use at&t's sim?
who develop and responsible for the update? is it at&t or Samsung?
and for last, will i be able to install the updated Rom by Odin?
thanks
Shay

All these questions have been asked ad nauseum on these very forums... wouldn't want to inconveniance you with a search though so...
Yes.
Don't know.
Probably, but you'll likely have to flash it yourself.
Samsung will do the development, AT&T will probably deploy.

Thanks for your reply! It is also important to me.
I can trust the AT & T?..
I want to buy the device. Maybe they do not release an update?

Eventually. If you search the threads, there is a post about Froyo for Captivate in Spain (I think) for late October.
Anyway, I want them to make sure it's ok before they push out another update that bricks phones.

Thanks. So the update will come for sure? So probably I will buy.

Yeah but it will probably come for the I9000 Galaxy S phones first. It's a wait and see.

so one last question to be sure:
the captivate will get an update to android 2.2
the update is originally made to the i9000 and being modified by at&t?
am i right?
thanks again
by the way, i did searched a lot in the forum but i didn't found and inconclusive answers

Samsung will port the 2.2 update to the Captivate, but AT&T has to approve(mangle) it before public release.

Don't mean to burst your bubbles but no. We will not get a official release.... just remember I said it.
Common if we were to get it it would be done by now.

yes
It will come

True We Will Not, but You can "BUY" a Samsung Tablet with Froyo 2.2. Ask yourself how do they have 2.2 for a tablet that has yet to be released (here in the USA, but Soon) and not for the Captivate and all others that were released in July some back in May?
Hell No We WON'T EVER see Froyo on the Captivate....

Did you know your Sprint Hero will be getting Eclair early next year? Well...now you do! Happy Friday ladies and gents
I don't think anyone was questioning if. Its when.
yea, i wasnt ever concerned whether we were going to get the update, but rather the time frame in which we would.
confirmatory tweets are always welcomed though
Looks like it won't be for several months.

Might as well have just said "it'll come out eventually", haha.
Hahahaha
Lets see 1H 2010, ususally the updates run about 2 time periods behind when they say that they will be available... so looking somewhere around 1H2011...
By that time, the development work for 2.1 here in XDA-Developers will already be done and all of us will be looking forward to the next release.
I wonder why the Moment is being held up on the 2.0 release, when it's just vanilla Android. I really didn't think they were going to give us that broad of a timespan though. I figured January would be the latest that we'd have 2.0. So unless Google makes some changes, there's a good chance we won't be using their newest apps for a long time (officially anyway). By the time we get 2.0, Droid will be running 4.5 .
as long as we get 2.1 here first and i can brag about it for a whole before anyone else has it, im happy lol.

1H 2010? Really? Talk about vague. I may go back to big red for the Passion if we don't see it very soon.
I love Sprint, and my Hero, but let's be real.... almost every Android phone on the market will be LIGHT YEARS ahead of us if it takes more than a couple months at most.
While I agree that it isn't cool to toy around with us...specially since we'll still be behind when the update hits most likely. But still...I don't think that not getting an update warrants hopping the fence haha.
but then again, I cannot even really use that since I "hopped the proverbial fence" after my girlfriend dumped me and haven't looked back...if you get my drift haha

I think it's a perfect reason to hop the fence, show sprint that we want our updates, we can't do anything on 1.5 .. no nav, no goggles, nothing new and exciting, i'm fed up and i would rather start over with a new phone.. than wait for sprint to get off their lazy behinds and feed us something that should have been out already

Or keep your eyes peeled for the 2.0-ish roms we have in the works here, there's a decent chance we'll be fully up and running by the time the other phones get their official update. But by all means, "stick it to the 'man'..." and cancel your service. It's your prerogative. I personally don't see the need. I like my sprint service and I like my sprint hero. /shrug

See, I don't think Sprint will have an update for us until about May (I just have a feeling on this). In light of that, I'm definitely looking at the development on the 2.0/2.1 ROMs in the other threads...those look like they will be ready way before Sprint updates us.

T-mobile is sending out OTA 2.0.1 already for G1 and MT3G

see http://simflecks.com/?p=1082
if you've gotten it post a dump so it can be rooted
Hey whats the commands to dump the phone?
I unrooted my MT3G so its on 1.6 atm.
And oddly I don't believe it. Until T-Mobile gives the announcement, itis all speculation.
@Ace just get a logcat app and IF you get it, run it and post it, we will get the link for it.

Fail. This article was dated from last year.
I know noone knows me from anything.. but Im not out for attention on this.
When I went in to change my plan last week and check my upgrade credit it was in mid morning and I was the only customer so I was able to sit down with the re for a while talking about phones and he showed me the fender Mytouch demoo.. blah blah.. Anyway.. When we were talking about if I should wait for the fender mytouch or get a CLiq, he mentioned to me that the new updates would be officially out between feb 7th-21st. I asked him what build he said depending on the phone 2.01 and 2.1. He knew I had a G1 and he said that I may be getting 2.1. This guy has been working in the same store for about 4 years so I know hes not some rambling new guys saying whatever I want to hear.

Updating Captivate to Android 2.2 while rooted.

We all know the Captivate is getting its official 2.2 update in a few months.
My question is, since I rooted my Captivate, will I have to do anything special to update? Or, will I just be able to manually check for updates and It will install automatically from there?

To the OP, I don't know jack bout android, contrary to what you think, but I do read, read and read some more. I had my first fuze for about three months before I got another to start playing with. I've been reading about android for the past couple months, been reading bout the captivate for the past week. Ok really an OTA update for a phone should be no different from a Bios Flash on a PC, as the BIOs flash rewrites primary data to default settings so should the OTA update flash. So when 2.2 froyo flashes the OTA update it should in fact rewrite the phone rom to a default state and return the phone to all stock unrooted settings and return all bloat ware.

Guys, FROYO (2.2) hasn't been released officially for our Captivates! But no, if you're talking about OTA updates then no, they will not work on our rooted Captivates well. Sometimes you may be able to register an update but it will fail if you are rooted but for MOST captivates it won't even get that far.
Personally, OTA updates are really unreliable so I'd either wait for someone on the dev section to grab it and make it usable for Odin, since that's easier for me and I can reinstall the software if something bad happens.
And no, a new firmware/ROM for our phones isn't like a BIOS update. I'm not sure how the process goes in depth but I'm pretty sure it just installs over the existing software and (if required) changes some settings deep in the phone's bootloader if necessary. Obviously a 2.2 or any other OS upgrade would mean the phone wipes the device first, which is one reason why OTA would not work.
Hope I answered everything?

I mean froyo to gingerbread is small step and took atnt forever to release it. gingerbread to ics is huge step and will take atnt forever to release it to lol. The only reason i want them to release it is for bluetooth and camera drivers. Entropy's rom is awsome and is my daily driver but it doesnt have bluetooth and camera isnt the best quility so if samsung does release official the entropy's rom will be awsome. Yeah a more stable gb rom would be good to cause the one out right now doesnt have hdmi support and only records 720p at 15frames per second
I'm not trying to be a buzz kill but they more than likely for their phones mixed up. This phone is dead to them.

Maybe ask them by model number (SHG-I997) so they don't confuse it with the "Inspire" again.

The OP was speaking with Samsung not ATT so no reason to get infuse confused with inspire
The person I spoke with did not give me the same reply you got
Valarie: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: Hello. Will the Samsung Infuse 4g (SGH-1997) be recieving an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update?
Valarie: I understand that you want to know the releasing date of Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung Infuse 4g. Is that correct?
Visitor: Yes.
Valarie: Thank you.
Valarie: I will be more than happy to assist you.
Valarie: We are unable to speculate when/if this software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center or you will be informed by your service provider. Please feel free to check with us periodically for updates.
Valarie: You will get the update information on your phone once the update is released.
Valarie: I apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Visitor: So there is no word as to if this is even being worked on?
Valarie: In live chat support we perform basic troubleshooting steps to get the issue fixed.
Valarie: You will get the update information on your phone once the update is released

Dont put stock in what Samsung has to say as they have little control over the update. ATT has complete control. Samsung may release it to ATT but then ATT may never release it. It is not unheard of. Happens all the time with ATT phones. The euro version gets 1 or 2 updates whle the US version never sees any updates at all.
This is what i got

Nicole: I would like to inform you that, currently, 2.3 Gingerbread is the latest software version for your device. ICS has not been released. I have to agree, it would be awesome if they do bring ICS to our phone. However, it'll be a couple of months before they release a "Leak" of it, and by the time it's released on Kies, I'm sure all of us will be up for an upgrade, and we'll all have the SG3 looking for a Jellybean leak, trying to OC and Theme the hell out of it.. lol..
Guys.... there were articles everywhere stating that att would only release ics to some of their very high end phones. The infuse is not a high end phone anymore. Sammy may make an update... but the chances of us ever seeing it are little as att will abolish it immediatly. Only if someone was in very close contact with sammy....
I agree with you, which is pretty much why we're all here on XDA looking for the latest and greatest for our phone, which is why I applaud and send my MANY thanks to everyone responsible for every Mod/Theme/Firmware update possible. I know I just officially joined this site, but I've been coming to it for quite sometime, to look for ways to mod not just my phone, but also friends of mine who are not as Tech-savy as I am, so I find myself getting asked to mod all my friends phones all the time. Luckily, I find it fun to do, not to mention, it helps me get a better understanding of how things work and why they operate the way they do. but anyhow.. If it is true that this phone will get ICS that's awesome, but if not, well.. atleast it was a nice thought. Even though, it still baffles me that Developers here at XDA can port ROMs from other phones and are getting quite efficient at it too by the way, and it takes manufactures months actually almost a year to release an old outdated Firmware upgrade (Gingerbread) and still had plenty of bugs.. so what's the difference at this point where we get updates from.. lol..
