It tried to install the update, got to 50%, rebooted and told me that the update failed and that nothing happened to my phone. Why did it fail and when will the update work, if ever?
Well the first time I tried to download, my stock rom was Rooted and Bloatware was removed and the update failed to install at 99%. Then I one click back to stock and I got to 50% and failed! I just installed the rom from samfirmware and no issues, I just need to get a hold of an old version of titanium backup!
HTH,

Same thing here. I am rooted with the one click root from these forums.
One thing I have noticed in general is my reception is worse with the Captivate than with my old iphone 2g. Also battery life is worse as well.
I hate Apple and love the Captivate. But if this keeps up any longer I am off to verizon and the Droid X. A coworker has it that sits right beside me and its great. He just got the 2.2 update yesterday and everything went fine. Also he can check for an update whenever he wants instead of every 24 hours like ATT. I will pay to get out of my contract and either put this phone on ebay or chunk it.
Maybe this phone can be the first test of my new rock skip app. Here's the idea... you skip your phone like a rock across the water and it records how many skips it took! LOL
I know how you feel, but you have to try to keep a sense of humor through all this!
I mean think about it, we are all driving ourselves crazy trying to figure out how to get the phone to install an update. Hours and hours wasted trying to figure out why the install fails.
And if we ever do get the update to install, no one really even knows for sure if it does anything beneficial....you know you may have a point....another phone is sounding better and better...umm where do I download this rock skip app...
failed at 99 then at 50
I had same experience as another user, rooted, failed at 99%, now gets to 50% then fails. However firmware listed as new version. Also, GPS fix is now SCARY FAST, 3 second inside a building supper accurate, no, error bubble. Quick office for captivate now shows up in market. Media scanning is at least 5 times faster. I think the update actually succeeded for me even though it said fail.
I'm having the same problem. I download the update but it gets to preparing and it fails. Anybody know a reason why? I'm rooted and removed bloatware.

You guys got farther than I did. I have not received the push notification. Yesterday I initiated the pull for the update over wifi, and the download never started -- it just said connection in progress and hung... no error message. Then I had to wait 24 hours. Today, I initiated the pull over wifi, and after about 30 minutes the download started, but the download hung at 14% an hour ago. I called AT&T, and they said they had no info, please call Samsung. I called Samsung, and they said they had no info, please call AT&T. So nobody can tell me why I cannot get a measly little download to complete, nor can the tell me when or if I will get the OTA push. I guess I can try the download every 24 hours and maybe one day it will work.
You may have better luck if you try to use Edge or 3g to download the update. I can't get the update to install but I can get it to download not on wifi but on 3g. Might help.

I had to do the date forward trick to get it to download. It downloaded and installed 100% successful. My phone is stock as the day I bought it. Some people say they have seen "failed" install from being rooted, but it still installs.
Testing, and will report back.

Just set your calendar one day ahead.
I just want to know how this update would effect a rooted phone.... i am currently running SRE 1.3.1c
It seems like anyone with a rooted phone might get an error, but it still installs fine. First impressions is actually really good. The phone feels a little faster. The videos are smoother and so is the gallery. When I opened maps it found my location instantly instead of getting the %waiting for location" message. Accuracy was 1000 meters, but I didn't turn on the GPS.
Also the signal strength and internet speed seems much faster. And stronger for me

Just updated mine. Gps is a lot faster! I can even get a lock when indoors now.
I can no longer access the gps menu through the dialer though.

The OTA update now allows me to go into the three button recovery mode. I couldn't do this before.
Does anyone know if we have an unlocked Captivate on another carrier, will be be getting the update? If not, how does one go about getting it?
Installed fine on my rooted phone gps seems snappy but I can't really test right now. Media scan still taking a while but the phone is less laggy while it's running.
So far so good considering I was ready to ditch this phone yesterday. Temporary rage reduction for me.

Downloading now....
Dropped connection during d/l now I cant get it to d/l at all even after a rommanger restore.
I manually checked for a software update on my rooted Captivate, and after downloading and rebooting, I got a message saying the update was not installed.
Mine isn't even showing an update available. I've set the date forward to tomorrow, the 24th, the 25th, 26th, 27th, none show an update available...grrrr...
Any link to the software other than OTA?
Update not installed but baseband version changed to JH7.
I don't notice any difference on a factory-software phone. GPS still does not work indoors at all. I'll try in my vehicle later.

Same here, on the white screen after installing the update it got to 50% and failed. Check my firmware still says jf6 with 2.6.29 [email protected] #2 kernel
I just went to download it on my sister's phone since hers is still factory stock, unrooted, etc...
Nothing at all. Didn't even download the update. Now I can't check for another 24 hours.

i never said it was forced. i read a post about froyo maybe being available so i clicked the 'software updates' thing and it said an update was available. it downloaded and said it was going to reboot the phone to presumably install it. the phone rebooted to a white screen with a blue loading bar and said 'update failed.' now it no longer powers on or even recognizes being charged.

I can attest to the update bricking. I did cancel the download half way to turn on wifi and figured it would be simply restarting the download, but instead it started installing what was there and it stated it was going to restart so I let it and then nothing happened...tried taking the battery out and tried getting into download mode to no avail. Anyone got any ideas?

He spoke to the wrong person then and should call back. Mine is broken also, and it's past the 30 days, so all I could get was a refurbished one. Better than nothing. I'm never doing an OTA update again. Flashed my phone upwards of 20 times and if something messed up I could alway reset to download and re-flash.

This.
I went to the warranty and repair center in my area (dunno if everyone has one?) and they have ordered a new (refurb?) captivate for me. As long as it works and isn't too beat up, I don't really care. I'm just sick of this E63. lol
is the internal 16gb an internal memory card? Maybe if it is, you can pull that out and rebuild the whole OS of the phone through another source such as a card reader.
I tried the update on my phone. It's rooted and set up for sideload as well as a few other hacks.
However, I only bought my phone about 3 weeks ago. The update has failed 4 times for me, then i checked the existing firmware on the phone. It's already at I897UCJH7.
Take it for what it's worth.
Mine is totally stock and it was also bricked last night. I tried everything to fix it but it is completely dead. I tried the update last night and didn't interrupt it at all. The progress bar made it to 50%, stalled for a minute and then gave a message that the update failed. It tried to restart and it went completely dead. I've tried using Odin, but nothing happens. sin
I also called AT&T and was initially less than pleased after I was told to call Samsung for a possible fix. I told CS that I didn't buy the phone from Samsung and that I wasn't calling them, since it was an AT&T problem. I finally got someone to authorize a return and my new one should be here in a couple of days, but the fact that this thing was totally bricked so easily because of an official update is ridiculous.
The only updates out there is JH7/2.1. Bricking phones while OTA update to JH7 is nothing new. Just check all the JH7 threads. Stay away from OTA updates for now.
You won't get 2.2 OTA update until weeks after it is talked about all over the place.

I don't know how this happened but I look over and see my thunderbolt rebooted (happens maybe once every one or two weeks). Not thinking much of it I look away and then look back a moment later to see the update screen! I would have ripped the battery out but I didn't want to risk bricking it.
I have been hitting reject to the update since it was first released and it's never updated on its own! This is a warning to anyone else that has been hitting reject all this time, it seems it somehow is starting the update process on its own now.

Well apparently it can because it has been sitting at my desk at work all day and I haven't touched it. It vibrated and I look over and see the HTC splash screen and then it went to the update logo. If it was just sitting there how else can you explain it?
It rebooted several times and now the data icon is different, mobile hotspot doesn't work, and there is a new Verizon data widget. It updated on its own.
Resistance is futile.
mine updated itself too last night. I plan to reject the update since i still had a working hotspot up too last night. I looked at my phone and the update was already in progress and halfway done.

Huh? It's coming Q2, and this is only June 86th.
I can confirm that the phone did "auto-update". I had been hitting reject on every notification for the update (so i could keep using the mobile hotspot). When i woke up this morning (or yesterday morning, i cant remember) - my phone had the new verizon icons, new version number, and mobile hotspot didnt work anymore (prompt to buy $30/month feature).
I'll guess i'll finally have to root and install some ROM.

Yes it does. In fact, I suspect what happens is when the screen/menu pops up with 'accept, reject, or the 3rd option (??)', if you don't respond within a certain time, it defaults to 'accept'.
I think is too much coincidence that more than one person had the same issue the same night. Verizon you !#$% failz!
Same here. Updated this morning right when my alarm was supposed to go off. Luckily the flashing lights woke me, but it was too late as it was already on the update screen and couldn't risk pulling the battery.

So I plugged in my phone last night and rebooted it, only to find ClockWorkRecovery giving me a warning message saying that some update has failed (details below), and if I tell it to reboot, it will properly enter Android and load all my stuff, but within seconds of loading up properly, the phone FORCE shuts down.
Power Off - Shutting Down, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
I have the latest CWM 4.0.1.5, i just flashed it. I did a backup just in case, as I don't know what steps to take.
While booting up..the phone will look like its installing something, but then fails.
Press the menu key, CWM opens up and I see the following.

I know Verizon has been bugging me with that firmware update, but I've been denying it every time. There is no way it would have downloaded already, would it? I didn't accept any software updates.
I've tried rebooting phone from cold shutdown, taking memeory card out. I have't restored to previous ROM, or dont any wipes/factory resets. I dont wanna attempt those unless I know what it's going to do.
At this rate, my HTC Thunderbolt is pretty much a brick.
========
UPDATE:
I followed the method 1 steps from the link bastukee posted and its been working so far so good.
i am currently rooted with the old software, is there anyway to update the software but still stay rooted? I dont want to keep seeing these annoying updates.
@blenderben
Mine did EXACTLY the same thing and solution #1 fixed it, the option to clear the cache. I'm going to actually use a non-stock ROM from now on.
yeah i wanna swap to CM7, but isn't it still in alpha?
Verizon auto push update to phone.
How can we stop it?
After doing some digging I see there is a new LS996ZV5 update. I am rooted so have not gotten any OTA notifications. Has anyone gotten it and does it help with lag and battery?
My phone seems pretty snappy as is but always want the latest if possible.
Guess one last thing. What are thoughts on timetable of custom recovery and maybe some rooted roms for us Sprint users?
Any discussion welcome!

Not sure on battery life yet as it's only been a couple of hours since I updated.

it won't work while rooted, i've tried, twice. i'm waiting on the update prompt again to try my next thing, but if you want to try it feel free. if you open up superuser and go to the settings there is an option to fully unroot the device, its towards the bottom. After you do that restart and then try and apply the update.
let me know if it works! hopefully i get the update prompt again in the morning and will finally be able to get this thing updated!!!!
So curious as to what this update was. All I know is that today my battery life isn't nearly as good. Normally after working for 8hrs my phone is around 75%... Today it was at 40%... Massive difference and i did nothing out of the ordinary
That sounds like my phone, I've noticed that I Google services is using more battery than the screen recently.

sorry, you are stuck there are a couple of other threads with further discussion on it but so far no one has been able to get the OTA to apply after they have rooted. some of us have been able to get new devices through sprint with having their insurance and play it off as the OTA won't update. they have had enough issues with the device they don't really question it.

Back for me to this morning. Anyone know what DQA even is?
I think it has something to do with wifi quality. I installed package disabler pro and disabled the service (along with a bunch of other stuff). Problem solved.

I should have done that prior to the update. I'm going to make it till the next stable update, then disable all update processes like I did with the Note 7. My phone was nice for a day before the idiots go mucking with it. I also have a red tinted screen after the update, which I don't think I did prior.
The update brought nothing I want. I'm a complete idiot for letting the phone update. I knew better. It was late at night...
I also think the update changed my LTE signal and the logo on the connection bar. It was better before. I'm typically full strength when lying in bed, now it is 1-2 bars.
Seems it was triggered this morning but receiving an MMS message of someone sending me a pic of the error. so maybe it's the MMS on wifi triggering the error.
There was a procedure where you enable Bixby and swipe left. I tried it and it worked.
At least until this morning. Its back again.
Hurry Samsung and either get out a fix or let us go back.
This way resolve my DQA error

I purchased 2 S8+'s. I updated one and began getting the DQA message immediately, about 2 every minute only on that one updated phone. After spending a day trying ALL of the solutions you see posted, I thought I had it solved until it re-appeared 4 hours later! I decided to go down to the Verizon store to have them resolve this. They spent 45 min on the phone with THEIR technical support and basically went through the same list of solutions we've seen posted. None of them would work. Additionally, I had a Samsung GearS watch that would not install (Error Code 5).
The other phone WITHOUT the update has worked fine, no errors and the same watch installed fine. I asked Verizon to just to wipe the phone so I could start over without the update. Several technicians in the store told me that would NOT work. They stated the update is not removed by restoring the phone to the factory image. I found this difficult to believe, so I said, "Fine, give me another phone!" For whatever reason, and I don't care what the reason is at this point, this phone is not performing as it should, you obviously can't fix it, so as far as I'm concerned it's defective and I demand a replacement. They provided me with a new replacement and transferred all of the apps I spent 6 hours previously installing, to the new replacement, the watch installed properly and I left the store with a properly working phone with no error pop ups. Verizon solved my problem! I am now, once again happy and WILL NOT allow the software update to install until Samsung corrects this.
If you installed this update, you WILL begin receiving the DQA message ONLY when you are on WIFI. That's unsat for a new expensive phone. Simply bring it back to your Verizon store. Demand a refund or another phone. That is the most effective way to send a direct message to both Verizon and Samsung management that you are not happy. No doubt they pushed programmers to release this update before properly testing it. These managers should be held directly responsible for their actions that led to destroying an otherwise fantastic device. And WHY haven't they stopped this bad update???? My phones are still asking me to install it. Nope! NO WAY!

For whatever reason, and I don't care what the reason is at this point, this phone is not performing as it should, you obviously can't fix it, so as far as I'm concerned it's defective and I demand a replacement.
Nope! NO WAY!

Clearing cache doesn't work, but apparently Samsung is pushing an dqa update through the Galaxy app store
So yeah, apparently Samsung is to have pushed out an update to fix the issue yesterday. I have not received it and I still get DQA keeps stopping almost all day, even sometimes when not connected to WiFi. Is there anyone else that has yet to received it? I read it was pushed via Galaxy Apps, so I opened it, but no update. Search in the app comes up with nothing useful.

You did not resolve it, you worked around it.
Go to Play store, Download package disabler pro ($1.49) and disable DQA.
Best $1.49 I spent and I can kill so many crap processes.
