Take this for what it is. One person with a stock captivate phone who had problems.
He claims he didn't stop the update half way through the process or anything like that.
the latest software update from at&t bricked my ****ing phone. ***** i talked to through online at&t chat said it's the manufacturer's fault when it's really not. who do i contact to replace the phone?

Updated my Captivate and it’s working great. I have heard of those that cancel in the middle of the update could experience problems – some even claim it bricked their phone.
so bro, tell us the truth.. Did you turn off ur phone or cancel the update mid way?

i never said it was forced. i read a post about froyo maybe being available so i clicked the 'software updates' thing and it said an update was available. it downloaded and said it was going to reboot the phone to presumably install it. the phone rebooted to a white screen with a blue loading bar and said 'update failed.' now it no longer powers on or even recognizes being charged.

I can attest to the update bricking. I did cancel the download half way to turn on wifi and figured it would be simply restarting the download, but instead it started installing what was there and it stated it was going to restart so I let it and then nothing happened...tried taking the battery out and tried getting into download mode to no avail. Anyone got any ideas?

He spoke to the wrong person then and should call back. Mine is broken also, and it's past the 30 days, so all I could get was a refurbished one. Better than nothing. I'm never doing an OTA update again. Flashed my phone upwards of 20 times and if something messed up I could alway reset to download and re-flash.

This.
I went to the warranty and repair center in my area (dunno if everyone has one?) and they have ordered a new (refurb?) captivate for me. As long as it works and isn't too beat up, I don't really care. I'm just sick of this E63. lol
is the internal 16gb an internal memory card? Maybe if it is, you can pull that out and rebuild the whole OS of the phone through another source such as a card reader.
I tried the update on my phone. It's rooted and set up for sideload as well as a few other hacks.
However, I only bought my phone about 3 weeks ago. The update has failed 4 times for me, then i checked the existing firmware on the phone. It's already at I897UCJH7.
Take it for what it's worth.
Mine is totally stock and it was also bricked last night. I tried everything to fix it but it is completely dead. I tried the update last night and didn't interrupt it at all. The progress bar made it to 50%, stalled for a minute and then gave a message that the update failed. It tried to restart and it went completely dead. I've tried using Odin, but nothing happens. sin
I also called AT&T and was initially less than pleased after I was told to call Samsung for a possible fix. I told CS that I didn't buy the phone from Samsung and that I wasn't calling them, since it was an AT&T problem. I finally got someone to authorize a return and my new one should be here in a couple of days, but the fact that this thing was totally bricked so easily because of an official update is ridiculous.
The only updates out there is JH7/2.1. Bricking phones while OTA update to JH7 is nothing new. Just check all the JH7 threads. Stay away from OTA updates for now.
You won't get 2.2 OTA update until weeks after it is talked about all over the place.

It tried to install the update, got to 50%, rebooted and told me that the update failed and that nothing happened to my phone. Why did it fail and when will the update work, if ever?
Well the first time I tried to download, my stock rom was Rooted and Bloatware was removed and the update failed to install at 99%. Then I one click back to stock and I got to 50% and failed! I just installed the rom from samfirmware and no issues, I just need to get a hold of an old version of titanium backup!

Same thing here. I am rooted with the one click root from these forums.
One thing I have noticed in general is my reception is worse with the Captivate than with my old iphone 2g. Also battery life is worse as well.
I hate Apple and love the Captivate. But if this keeps up any longer I am off to verizon and the Droid X. A coworker has it that sits right beside me and its great. He just got the 2.2 update yesterday and everything went fine. Also he can check for an update whenever he wants instead of every 24 hours like ATT. I will pay to get out of my contract and either put this phone on ebay or chunk it.
Maybe this phone can be the first test of my new rock skip app. Here's the idea... you skip your phone like a rock across the water and it records how many skips it took! LOL
I know how you feel, but you have to try to keep a sense of humor through all this!
I mean think about it, we are all driving ourselves crazy trying to figure out how to get the phone to install an update. Hours and hours wasted trying to figure out why the install fails.
And if we ever do get the update to install, no one really even knows for sure if it does anything beneficial....you know you may have a point....another phone is sounding better and better...umm where do I download this rock skip app...
failed at 99 then at 50
I had same experience as another user, rooted, failed at 99%, now gets to 50% then fails. However firmware listed as new version. Also, GPS fix is now SCARY FAST, 3 second inside a building supper accurate, no, error bubble. Quick office for captivate now shows up in market. Media scanning is at least 5 times faster. I think the update actually succeeded for me even though it said fail.
I'm having the same problem. I download the update but it gets to preparing and it fails. Anybody know a reason why? I'm rooted and removed bloatware.

You guys got farther than I did. I have not received the push notification. Yesterday I initiated the pull for the update over wifi, and the download never started -- it just said connection in progress and hung... no error message. Then I had to wait 24 hours. Today, I initiated the pull over wifi, and after about 30 minutes the download started, but the download hung at 14% an hour ago. I called AT&T, and they said they had no info, please call Samsung. I called Samsung, and they said they had no info, please call AT&T. So nobody can tell me why I cannot get a measly little download to complete, nor can the tell me when or if I will get the OTA push. I guess I can try the download every 24 hours and maybe one day it will work.
You may have better luck if you try to use Edge or 3g to download the update. I can't get the update to install but I can get it to download not on wifi but on 3g. Might help.
I was doing an update for my captivate, and then my phone turned off, and now it will not turn on at all.

New phone should be here on Thursday, :/
Happened to me as well, twelve days after getting my phone. I was doing the update inside my apartment which I don't get the greatest reception. Phone stopped downloading half way through. It went to reboot and then a blank screen. Went to the Att store and they replaced it. Now I check for updates outside with a strong signal.

Never, let me repeat that, NEVER do an update OTA. Mini Kies or just wait till the developers here get a copy of the source code and make it run better than Samsung and AT&T could ever dream of making it run.
I don't know how this happened but I look over and see my thunderbolt rebooted (happens maybe once every one or two weeks). Not thinking much of it I look away and then look back a moment later to see the update screen! I would have ripped the battery out but I didn't want to risk bricking it.
I have been hitting reject to the update since it was first released and it's never updated on its own! This is a warning to anyone else that has been hitting reject all this time, it seems it somehow is starting the update process on its own now.

Well apparently it can because it has been sitting at my desk at work all day and I haven't touched it. It vibrated and I look over and see the HTC splash screen and then it went to the update logo. If it was just sitting there how else can you explain it?
It rebooted several times and now the data icon is different, mobile hotspot doesn't work, and there is a new Verizon data widget. It updated on its own.
Resistance is futile.
mine updated itself too last night. I plan to reject the update since i still had a working hotspot up too last night. I looked at my phone and the update was already in progress and halfway done.
No i am concidering root but wanted to stay stock. Someone just posted that they were rooted and stock and this automatic update caused their phone to brick.

Huh? It's coming Q2, and this is only June 86th.
I can confirm that the phone did "auto-update". I had been hitting reject on every notification for the update (so i could keep using the mobile hotspot). When i woke up this morning (or yesterday morning, i cant remember) - my phone had the new verizon icons, new version number, and mobile hotspot didnt work anymore (prompt to buy $30/month feature).
I'll guess i'll finally have to root and install some ROM.

Yes it does. In fact, I suspect what happens is when the screen/menu pops up with 'accept, reject, or the 3rd option (??)', if you don't respond within a certain time, it defaults to 'accept'.
I think is too much coincidence that more than one person had the same issue the same night. Verizon you !#$% failz!
Same here. Updated this morning right when my alarm was supposed to go off. Luckily the flashing lights woke me, but it was too late as it was already on the update screen and couldn't risk pulling the battery.

So I plugged in my phone last night and rebooted it, only to find ClockWorkRecovery giving me a warning message saying that some update has failed (details below), and if I tell it to reboot, it will properly enter Android and load all my stuff, but within seconds of loading up properly, the phone FORCE shuts down.
Power Off - Shutting Down, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
I have the latest CWM 4.0.1.5, i just flashed it. I did a backup just in case, as I don't know what steps to take.
While booting up..the phone will look like its installing something, but then fails.
Press the menu key, CWM opens up and I see the following.

I know Verizon has been bugging me with that firmware update, but I've been denying it every time. There is no way it would have downloaded already, would it? I didn't accept any software updates.
I've tried rebooting phone from cold shutdown, taking memeory card out. I have't restored to previous ROM, or dont any wipes/factory resets. I dont wanna attempt those unless I know what it's going to do.
At this rate, my HTC Thunderbolt is pretty much a brick.
========
UPDATE:
I followed the method 1 steps from the link bastukee posted and its been working so far so good.
i am currently rooted with the old software, is there anyway to update the software but still stay rooted? I dont want to keep seeing these annoying updates.
@blenderben
Mine did EXACTLY the same thing and solution #1 fixed it, the option to clear the cache. I'm going to actually use a non-stock ROM from now on.
yeah i wanna swap to CM7, but isn't it still in alpha?
Verizon auto push update to phone.
How can we stop it?
Guys, i've seen alot of threads about boot looping and Randomized rebooting. i too am a victim of this error as well. it started one day withing the first week of april, when i left my phone on a table, then when i was going to get it, it was on the bootanimation.... so it was weird. the next encounter a day after, my phone did it again, but it was on my pocket at that time. it kept goint till 2 weeks later, i got my new laptop and now i can reflash to stock. when i flashed it, nothing happened the problem was still there. took me another 2 weeks to bring it to the service center since it was far from where i live. within the 2 weeks, the problem got worse. the phone said "usb storage unexpectedly unmounted then, poof. bootloop. i didnt see the go launcher's home anymore... aaaand ODIN no longer detects my phone when i plug it in... when i sent it to the service center they first thought it was just a software/firmware problem... but when the tried flashing to stock, they got an error. he said that it was a main board problem... so they'll need to take it in to change it...
i made this post so people can talk about the problems related to this. and when ever random reboots, and bootlooping happens and is not fixed by flashing to stock, then dont bother flashing it... BRING IT IMMEDIATELY TO THE SERVICE CENTER!!!
i see your from phil. what city you came from? me too im in bulacan. Where is the service centre of samsung here?

Lucky you but for me the random reboot was from the hardware problem. so i had to really bring it to sammy's service center
Lack of a better subject description the only thing I can describe it as is possessed. I've never had this problem before. Searched various different keywords and couldn't find anything. So if this is a repost then I apologize.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 from Verizon white 32gb. Never been rooted. Around the time Verizon pushed out the last update for the phone it's been acting strange since the update and it's progressively gotten worse. It's almost made purchases for me while I'm browsing google play it'll randomly press areas and randomly click buy at times. Or I'm trying to text someone and it'll either type something on it's own or start trying to delete/lock/resend, etc messages. It starts up s voice randomly too.
So basically it's like having a set of ghost fingers/hand trying to control my phone while I'm trying to control it and the ghost is winning and I'd rapidly hit the home button to exit out of whatever I was trying to do. If the screen is on and unlocked it'll do the same thing even if I'm not touching it but this is maybe 1 out of 5 times compared to the while I'm trying to actively use my phone it'll be 1 out of 2.
Temporary fixes have been to just restart the phone and at first it would only occur every couple days and then once a day and now every few hours to every few minutes. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
All you have available right now is factory data reset or refurb. If don't fix reflash the latest available stock software via Odin or root and unlock it and flash anything. Can even root stock and have access to better apps.
Try a factory reset if you haven't.

I have now tried a factory reset and while it took longer than just a few minutes to go all psychotic on me it still happened. Thanks for the tips! Any other suggestions? refurb is the last option I want to take I've received too many defective refurb phones and I don't think I can deal with anymore. I can try root I suppose but if there's any other suggestions I should try prior I'm open!
Thank you thank you!
If i were in your position I would try to Odin back to the stock rom you had before the update. There is a sticky in the development section that tell you how to do that and much more

It sounds defective. I'd take it back.
What you are describing happened to my Droid Incredible a few times: it appeared that someone else was creating random tap events on my phone. Turned out to be a slightly dirty and/or stuck optical trackball - once that was cleaned (easy), everything was back to normal.
Now, the Galaxy S III does not have a trackball. I don't see a direct correlation with my Incredible, but the symptoms you describe are oddly similar: perhaps try cleaning your various pushable keys, just in case?
Might install and run Symantec Antivirus just for a final check, then call Verizon Support if it's still happening and perhaps see what they can offer.

Replace your device. The touchscreen encoder is bad. If your screen is clean, never got wet, and is pressing random areas - and a factory reset or Odin doesn't work - this is most likely the case. You could try to convince them to give you a new one at the store by telling them you don't want to wait or something.
Also download the app multitouch visualizer and run it when it's flaking out. You will be able to see the "screen press" activity.

Because the device is so new you have a very good chance of getting a new replacement. I had something happen to my GNEX and they replaced it with a new phone no refurb.
Thank you all very much for your tips and advice! I stopped by the Verizon store today. Twice actually. It was a no go. First off they won't replace my phone with anything but a refurb (which is standard policy anyway) but the second part which is really irritating is that the phone was driving me insane till I went into the verizon store while waiting for a tech it kept acting odd then when the tech got my phone it functioned correctly. So since they couldn't replicate the problem they said they can't offer me a replacement. As soon as I got into the car it started happening again I ran into the verizon store and they said I had to wait for a tech again so I put my name in and waited had a different tech and of course as soon as he tested the phone it wasn't acting odd anymore so once again couldn't replicate.
Maybe my phone really is possessed.. but then again it's been my luck with past phones as well if they have issues they refuse to happen in store so I got my replacements via 611 tech support. So I called 611 and they said they never heard of the issue and that I should wait for update.

It's Verizon, some tech there is having fun with the remote capabilities of the new OTA.
Alrighty, took longer than expected but I did manage to do Odin stock firmware. It fixed the problem or so I thought for 48 hours but then it returned. Now a new problem has come up and the battery is draining at alarming speeds.. I will have phone at 80% when I go to sleep and when I wake up 3 hours later the battery is completely dead. No new apps, nothing draining in the background. I'm at a loss. Anyone have any other advice? Or are my only options now to throw the phone out the window or try to root it.

You wrote in a previous post that you went into the Verizon store... don't do that, ever... just call them.. tell them what it's doing and that you have tried a factory reset. They will overnight you a new/refurbished phone.
I had problems with mine as well and after fighting with the tool they call a manager I called 611 from the parking lot and after the hold time I had tech support on the phone and had a new replacement on the way 5 minutes later..
Just my 2 cents.

It's not the first time I had a phone replaced through 611 I've gone through maybe 10+ replacements on one of my past phones because they kept sending me a defective one over and over again. I did call 611 again since you suggested it but I was told the same exact thing as last time.
I had this happen a few times with my phone before the update verizon pushed (stock, rooted). I would end up pulling the battery to get it to stop. Hasn't happened to me in a while though. Now i'm running JellyWiz RLS12
