I was doing an update for my captivate, and then my phone turned off, and now it will not turn on at all.
Over the air 2.1 update? You might have to get a replacement phone from AT&T now...

same thing happened to me on new years eve new phone should be here in a few days
New phone should be here on Thursday, :/
Happened to me as well, twelve days after getting my phone. I was doing the update inside my apartment which I don't get the greatest reception. Phone stopped downloading half way through. It went to reboot and then a blank screen. Went to the Att store and they replaced it. Now I check for updates outside with a strong signal.

Never, let me repeat that, NEVER do an update OTA. Mini Kies or just wait till the developers here get a copy of the source code and make it run better than Samsung and AT&T could ever dream of making it run.

Updated my Captivate and it’s working great. I have heard of those that cancel in the middle of the update could experience problems – some even claim it bricked their phone.
so bro, tell us the truth.. Did you turn off ur phone or cancel the update mid way?

i never said it was forced. i read a post about froyo maybe being available so i clicked the 'software updates' thing and it said an update was available. it downloaded and said it was going to reboot the phone to presumably install it. the phone rebooted to a white screen with a blue loading bar and said 'update failed.' now it no longer powers on or even recognizes being charged.

I can attest to the update bricking. I did cancel the download half way to turn on wifi and figured it would be simply restarting the download, but instead it started installing what was there and it stated it was going to restart so I let it and then nothing happened...tried taking the battery out and tried getting into download mode to no avail. Anyone got any ideas?

He spoke to the wrong person then and should call back. Mine is broken also, and it's past the 30 days, so all I could get was a refurbished one. Better than nothing. I'm never doing an OTA update again. Flashed my phone upwards of 20 times and if something messed up I could alway reset to download and re-flash.

This.
I went to the warranty and repair center in my area (dunno if everyone has one?) and they have ordered a new (refurb?) captivate for me. As long as it works and isn't too beat up, I don't really care. I'm just sick of this E63. lol
is the internal 16gb an internal memory card? Maybe if it is, you can pull that out and rebuild the whole OS of the phone through another source such as a card reader.
I tried the update on my phone. It's rooted and set up for sideload as well as a few other hacks.
However, I only bought my phone about 3 weeks ago. The update has failed 4 times for me, then i checked the existing firmware on the phone. It's already at I897UCJH7.
Take it for what it's worth.
Mine is totally stock and it was also bricked last night. I tried everything to fix it but it is completely dead. I tried the update last night and didn't interrupt it at all. The progress bar made it to 50%, stalled for a minute and then gave a message that the update failed. It tried to restart and it went completely dead. I've tried using Odin, but nothing happens. sin
I also called AT&T and was initially less than pleased after I was told to call Samsung for a possible fix. I told CS that I didn't buy the phone from Samsung and that I wasn't calling them, since it was an AT&T problem. I finally got someone to authorize a return and my new one should be here in a couple of days, but the fact that this thing was totally bricked so easily because of an official update is ridiculous.
The only updates out there is JH7/2.1. Bricking phones while OTA update to JH7 is nothing new. Just check all the JH7 threads. Stay away from OTA updates for now.
You won't get 2.2 OTA update until weeks after it is talked about all over the place.

How has your experience been with it?
Mine has been fine, my wife's not so much...
My wife's Captivate: WAS very very laggy but 2.2 fixed it. She had zero problems with her GPS but the 2.2 update threw it off about a block : /
My Captivate: Just as smooth as before, and GPS is perfect as was before.
How are you guys enjoying Froyo?
Not quite sure what you mean. I didn't know there was an official one for the captivate sent out? Searched for it and couldn't find it on google. You sure ATT pushed out official 2.2 a month ago?
There is no official froyo yet for the captivate

Get another phone. Do not settle on a defective phone. I spoke with someone in the "Office of the President" (a higher level of AT&T customer service) and after checking into the issue, they overnighted me a NEW Captivate (my phone was purchased in August, so I am well out of the 30-days). Their statement was that the defective phones are not supposed to be in the new lots or refurb lots, as it is against their procedures to knowingly sell defective phones. I would suggest taking your complaints there. The number is 1-800-331-0500. Be firm and upset, but be respectful. They will work with you.
Overall its not bad, but I do have a few issues I am still contending with.
When I first did the update I lost navigation all together. I restarted the phone (using a access number Samsung provided me) and solved that issue.
I lost a lot of files that were on my SD card. I haven't been able to figure out why that should be. It's like the update made a point of deleting everything except my media... Oh well
However I am still fighting issues with the both the home and car docks. (Which by the way Samsung Canada doesn't recognize up here and said I am on my own)
The usb audio out worked once and then disappeared on me altogether... Restarting apps and phone isn't helping...
And using the home dock, the phones main screens get stuck in landscape mode (only after doing it all night, if it's only running for a couple hours it's fine) and I have to shut off the phone to get it back to normal. Using Samsung home dock app it was every night. Alarms Plus as well. I am currently using an app called no dock and its down to 25% of the time I don't get stuck in landscape mode. Livable... The car dock I have not gotten stuck in landscape yet, but then I don't think it will ever be in the dock long enough to get stuck...
Which brings me to a point of frustration. Why isn't landscape mode functional outside the dock mode? I love the ability, just not getting stuck there until I reboot... The phone CAN and WILL do it on certain conditions, so why not all the time?
I haven't tried the mass storage mode or tethering yet so I don't know if they are working or I have more issues to deal with.
I was about to make the jump back to Gingerbread "I.e. The ROM/Radio of death" and just wanted to know how many people have gotten over the bricking debacle.
I have yet to hear of anyone who has had a bricked device since a day or two after the incident was brought up.
Ya, I'm starting to think this may have had alot to do with just user error. I remember back in the early days of rooting when people used to brick phones because they didn't know what they were doing.
I think I'll wait another week and if I don't hear of anymore "bricks" I may switch back to GB.

I'm one of the ones who's Thunderbolt's bricked. I can tell you that mine had zero to do with user error. I have been rooting since the G1 days (not my phone but I rooted it for a friend) and this is the first phone I have never been able to fix.
My Thunderbolt was running the best it had ever run (not even overclocked) when it bricked.
I was running BAMF 2.0.4-1 put my phone on the charger when outside to mow the lawn and when I came back in, BAM it's booting to the splash screen then rebooting over and over.

Interesting, thats actual enough for me to hold off till a future release. I had a friend who got bricked but had little Android/Rooting knowledge so I kind of blew it off as it must have been user error. Thanks for the heads up, and will now continue waiting for a new release. Damn.
Edit: Did you have any luck getting a replacement from Verizon?

Man, that sucks. I know I've seen you post about the issue, but you seem to be the only one that actually has this issue that has actually posted anything concrete here.
Others that have posted about "bricks" sounded like they just didn't know what they were doing and were actually recoverable.
But like Mike said, enough for me to wait until more evidence is uncovered.
Thanks for the info.

And to add to the above I do all my rooting via adb, I have never used a one click root. I'm also an Official Themer on another forum, so I know my way around Android a little.
I had insurance that made me send it off to try to have it repaired first. I just got a new one yesterday.
I'm waiting on a new Gingerbread radio to come out before going back to Gingerbread even though how much I miss it.
Well right before the news was posted, I noticed some connection issues, it was kind of a weird issue. So I reverted back right after seeing the brick thread....

I think that is where the real problem is.
The issue is so random, there is no set explaination at this time to explain why/how it happened.
Since the one person that I know of sounds like a very creditable person based on feedback on these forums, I myself am going to error on the side of caution.
I was running GB with no issues as well, but I would hate to kill my phone, just because I "thought" it was safe to reload GB.
I have been on BAMF since they came onto the TB scene. Less than a week from phone release I rooted and started rom'ing. I loaded the new ginger radio about a day before the first report of the brick came out. I havent had any problems. But I have been keeping my eyes open to see when or what will cause a brick so every two seconds I cheack my phone BUT i can't post in the development forum yet So i gotta wait till ten UGH
i'll wait for our developers to give the thumbs up on going over to GB roms, whats the rush vs the risk? Not a big deal to wait another week or two considering what u could be going thru. BAMF remix 1.7 is running flawlessly for me after I dropped back from GB.
I was using Gingeritis from Beta 3 to Gingeritis IX. Honestly, I haven't had a single random reboot or any problem at all.
However, I did have a data issue. If my phone would change to a 3g signal, it wouldn't bring back 4G. But, once I rebooted the phone one time, the problem was fixed from there on.
I still have Gingeritis IX on my phone, and its great. I'm running Imo's test6 kernel as well.

Honestly the bricking thing threw me off first, then I noticed it takes forever to charge, drains quicker and camera and camcorder sucks on gingerbread. So I'm sticking on froyo Bamf for awhile.
Yeah I'm back on froyo. And to those who are "watching my phone and no signs of bricking", there will be no signs. You'll pull your phone from your pocket and have a bootlooping phone, unfortunately. I'm running CM7 gb, 95% of things work like they should, and since it's a froyo radio, I'm immune to the brick of death.

Hmmm... I was wondering this myself. I'm on GB BAMF 2.05 and only have random reboots when I have my 3rd party battery in. The stock battery doesn't seem to have any issues.
Anyone else having connectivity issues with their one x? If the phone loses connection for any length of time, it will not reconnect and I'll have to reboot the phone for the mobile network to reconnect, which is probably every 15 minutes or so in my case.
I skimmed a couple pages, couldn't find anything, but I've found a couple other forums with people posting about this issue.
Hoping there's a fix for this as every ATT store within 50 miles is out of stock on both colors and customer care won't do a damn thing for me but tell me "go back to the store." Bull**** if you ask me, broken ass phone and I'm stuck with it. Really?
I was hoping there was a fix, even if I have to unlock the bootloader and root.
Did you try messing with the sim card? Make sure it is inserted properly. This worked for me when my data was dropping out. Now the phone is on constant LTE.
THis just happened to me. Any length of time on data loss and the phone needs a reboot or airplane mode toggle. This is the worst bug to me. I'm praying an ota for this issue drops real soon. I understand signal drops, there is no way to avoid spotty coverage. But u shouldn't have to reboot or go in to airplane mode to pick up data again.

Airplane mode doesn't even work for me..... I have to hard reboot the phone, do you know how annoying that is? it's gotten to the point where I have to turn off data connection when im not using it, and turn it back on when I need it.
Problem is for work I use GPS a lot, and when it loses service im supposed to reboot my phone while driving and lose my path? Worst bug EVER. I dont have any of these multitasking issues at least.

I didn't have any issues since release day but noticed I had no connection all day, even after multiple restarts. I took it to Att and they replaced the sim. It's been fine the rest of the day but we'll see. Also I'm in Chicago and blaming anything weird on the NATO conference.

Maybe something is up today? My phone lost ALL connection for an hour. A straight hour, I did 3 reboots and toggled airplane mode multiple times. As soon as I got home and connected to wifi it came up again, then went back off. Had to restarted for a 4th or 5th time then it finally restored. It was pretty damn annoying.

Maybe it was something with AT&T.. Almost lasted long enough for me to return it >_> But then I remembered that there might be hope for dev's to unlock the BL. I would hate myself if I returned this phone for a 4S and then this was unlocked.
So I had to make a 70 mile round trip to get a new phone, that was the nearest store that had one in stock. I'm going on a few hours now with no interruption, and I'm much, much more happy. It was obviously the phone since this one is perfect. I'd say if you guys are having issues, replace it. From the minute I got the phone it was having this issue. I literally had to reboot the phone every time I wanted to use data. Today when I exchanged it (about 36 hours later and 40 miles from my home network), it did it right as I gave them the phone for the exchange (which was good cause they couldn't question the issue), so unless they fixed the network within the 10 minutes I took to swap the phone out, which is highly unlikely, it was the phone. Same sim and everything, just a new phone, going on 5 hours now and not a problem.
I think it's safe to say I had a faulty phone, but well see.

Just an update. Couple days now with my replacement phone and I've not had a single issue. Never loses connection and I don't have a single multitasking issue either. I'm now in love with this phone, hands down the best phone I've owned yet, and my recent list is evo, evo 3d, epic 4g touch, skyrocket and now this badboy. I don't even care if they unlock the boot loader, this phone doesn't need it.
Actually my one gripe is that quite often I don't get facebook chat notifications. I have to check manually in the app. Not terrible. But kind of annoying.

Hi Guys /girls.
Just got an S7, brand new on O2 (UK). I usually root my phones but haven't touched this as it's quick enough and I don't want to play around with it until the warranty ends.
In the past few days the phone has been freezing, then it will turn off, sometimes restarting entering a bootloop. It will come back on for a minute or two, then repeats.
At the moment it is working following a forced restart but not sure if this will last. Has anyone else had these issues? Or does anyone know what it could be? Going to get it swapped anyway just to make sure but I can't understand the cause. Thanks in advance
Had the same issue this moth, send it to warranty it will only be worse over the days. Samsung replaced my mbo and now everything is ok
Getting worse.... Trying to get it sorted with O2 is an absolute joke, their customer service is disgusting. Been into two stores and on the phone to them twice and they're not simply swapping it for me.... I haven't even had the device three weeks

Are you using anything the same as with the last one, like a MicroSD card or headphones etc?
Anything that is common between the two phones?
Same app that might be doing it? Maybe a restore from a Google backup when you first boot up reinstalling a buggy app?
Did you upgrade firmware to the latest version? It might be a software bug.
Seems fine now cheers guys. Auto frmware updates (x2) were done last night....must have been a one off. Definitely won't be rooting this device like my older phones!
