Screen etched, is yours...heres how to test! - Captivate General

So since i got my second Cap, i noticed that the bottom of my screen felt rough. I looked and looked, thought i had something wrong with my finger...to no avail. I cleaned the screen with alcohol wipes, and there it was...my screen was etched!
It CANNOT be seen easily by the naked eye, but if you huff warm air at it, you can see all the hundreds of tiny scratches.
My only regret is i didnt order my Zagg as soon as I got my phone and now I KNOW there is a defect, but as soon as the invisishield is on i wont feel that rough spot.
Anyone else see the etches? Or did you get a screen protector right away?

I see/feel nothing. I've had mine skinless for about 3 weeks now after having a skin on a week after release.

So your second Captivate came from the factory with these tiny scratches on the screen? Take it back. Or maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying.
Invisible shield sucks btw. I think I would rather have a scratched screen.

AT&T Replace my Fuze because...

I was using my Fuze the other day, and was scrolling down a website with the stylus, when all of a sudden the god damn stylus scratched my screen. As you can imagine i was mortified and shocked. A big gash only a week into owning my beautiful new fuze. So i take it in and tell them what happened and they gladly replaced the phone. Nice people! Guess the 30 day period does cover scratches, if by stylus!
thats odd, glad they swapped it for you. was your stylus's point sharper then usual?
So....
It's a good thing to treat your new styli to a bit of emery cloth before you start playing.
Erm... The first thing I did when I got my fuze was throw on that screen protector. Would be foolish if ya didn't do that the second go round.

When you say "that" screen protector. Are you saying they provided one with the FUZE in the box? Or did you buy one separately?
Yes one does come inside the box.
I was applying my invisible shield today and a little bit of the solution got into the earpiece duct, about 10 minutes later my touch screen was no longer functional. I've already returned my phone and getting a new one Saturday. Be careful with your phones guys, a little liquid and its all over.
I love the included screen protector. I've used alot of protectors over the past decade and the stock one holds up better than most (especially for free). I still don't have so much as a blemish on it even with alot of active use and it traveling in my pocket (but no keys). And it's such a good fit that when people check out my phone they tell me that, "You really should get a screen protector before you get any scratches on the glass."
Joke's on them.
I never even looked in the bag with the quick start guide, sure enough a screen protector and another screen protector that comes on the phone with all the warnings on it.
Included protector
Does anyone know the manufacturer of the included protector?
I didn't get mine aligned properly, some dust started peeling it from the corner so I had to ditch it and got an invisible shield, but I liked the included one because until you get use to it, the invible shield takes some getting use to.
Just peel your included screen protector off, wash it with some soapy water, and reapply it to your screen again (while still damp, but not drippy wet). Smooth it out and gently move all the bubbles of water out to the edges of the screen, and voila.
It doesn't specifically use a tacky glue so you can reapply it again and again. I do the same trick on my DS for perfectly clear and aligned protection.
Same trick people that tinted my car windows used for getting the plastic onto glass.

Did you wait 12-24hr before putting the battery back in and powering it up after installing the invisibleshield? Because you are supposed to, to prevent exactly what happened.
Dang It, I need to double check my trash. I had no idea they provided a screen protector. It was in a bag with the quick start guide?

Dust under glass? anyone else have this problem?

picked up 2 Nexus S on release day, went home happy. Preoccupied with work, so I only powered them up last night.
To my Surprise, both phones have dust under the glass! WTF Samsung? Removed the plastic sheet on the front to make sure, and yes, it's under the glass.
on one phone the dust was smack in the middle, while on the other phone it was a little left of the middle.
Can't be seen on a dark screen, but once you switch to a white background like the web or texting you can see it.
I know I am probably being OCD and anal about this, but heck I paid over $1k for both phones out of contract.
Went back to BestBuy and returned them promply, of course now they are sold out, and I have to wait for the next shipment.
Just wondering if others have similar experiences? BTW, I also had a Galaxy Tab and before returned it, it also had some dust specs under the glass...
I also own an HD2 and G2, seems HTC is better at QC.
Shame, really want this phone but WTF samsung?
Nope you sure its under the glass?

No dust under the screen here.
It seems that this first batch of phones is a rather mixed bag; some have defects and others are fine. It was a good idea to return them, hopefully your replacements will be free of issues.
My first S had a little speck of something. I initially thought it was a dead pixel, but I could see it when the screen was off also so I assumed it was dust. I returned it and checked the next one out before I left the store and it seems to be good.

100% sure, remove the screen protectors on both of them and rubbed the area where it was, thought it was a dead pixel too, but no it was fine on a dark background, but on a white background could see it easily.
sold out at my local bb, but still available online might go that route.
just wanted to see other people's experiences or maybe they didnt notice yet, lol.

this happen when you have 2 layers for the screen. the internal part and the upper part where you touch.
there is an advantage for this. if god forbid you dropped and broke the screen, only the upper part gets replaced. and wouldnt cost you much to do so " and you wont get another screen with dead pixel and being OCD whatever the new screen is good or not. because the actuall inner screen isnt touched.
the bad thing about is what you said. dust can enter in the middle between both layers of the screen.
even if you get a new nexus S without dust under the screen, if you leave it in the open area with sun and wind always hitting it, you will get a dust somehow inside as well. so make sure your phone is in a pocket most of the time.
the only phone i remember right now that had both layers of the screens touched as 1 part is the iphone 2G and the iphone 4 " i am sure there are others but i dont know "
this result to no dust under the screen no matter what " unless the dust came from factory while they were attaching both screens on top of each other and glue them "
but if you break your screen in the iphone 4.... god help you.
Yeah, after about a week and couple of days of usage, I've got my first spec of dust in the top left area of the screen. Really, it's nothing noticeable but I do have some sort of OCD with my phone (god help me if I get a visible scratch on the screen).
I don't think it's really worth taking it back to get it changed as this Nexus S I have currently has no problems whatsoever, I don't even have the pink or yellow screen issue with this one. I think I'm just gonna have to live with that one spec of dust for now...
I think this may be just bad QC. I looked at ifixit taking apart the NS. Basically they said the trickiest part to the disassembly was the screen, and they had to use a heat gun to soften the glue just to separate the 2 screens. So dust entering between those 2 screens would be pretty difficult unless the glue wasn't properly applied from the assembly line.

I don't have dust under my Nexus S screen... but I do have dust under my front facing camera! And its only recently just got there - I remember playing around with it extensively when I first got it 6 months ago and the camera was really clear and sharp.
Now it is all fuzzy and white haze. And I can see all the dust particles on the underside of the glass. Annoying!
Anyone know if there's an easy way to clean it? Or is it a case of back to Samsung?

Funny smudge on screen?

I used my Nexus S without a screen protector, and there was one day when I was using the phone heavily, this part of the screen felt a little rough to the touch when I was swiping it.
Now when I look at the screen I see these faint track marks on the screen that aren't scratches, but it's like something smudged the screen. I have wiped it with microfibre cloth (My Oakleys pouch) but I can't remove this smudge.
It's barely visible when the screen is on but you can see it if the screen is off.
Does anybody else have this problem? Is it a scratch or can I wash this off somehow?
I have similar spots... it's most likely the oleophobic coating wore off in that area. Not sure how it happens, but it seems to be ****ty coating.

I also have one such small spot that is only visible when the screen is off, and only visible at a certain angle with a lot of light. It's been there since I got the phone. It actually looks like it's under the glass, but I can't tell for sure. I can't feel it. I've been keeping an eye on it and I'll utilize Best Buy's protection plan if it gets worse. Im glad I'm not the only one, but this is a little disappointing.
It's problably the oleophobic coating like others said. I have the same thing on mine, and have been thinking of exchanging it because of it. But I think I might as well keep it, as this phone has no other problems, and I'm sure it will probably wear off any phone I get with due time.
Take a paper towel and lightly go over that area. I bet it comes clean so you can't see it anymore until you wipe your oily fingers in that spot again. It seems oils like to get stuck in those spots unless you clean it with something that absorbs oils, and isn't reused over and over.
Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I am hesitant to do a return as my phone works great with none of the issues faced by others.
I'll try cleaning it as suggested. Thanks!

I had the smudges that Kayatoast talked about. I just wiped it off with a paper towel and it disappeared. I guess we must clean it with something that absorbs oil.
My smudges probably came from the hand lotion...
I've also decided not to return mine because I don't want to get a replacement phone with a worse problem.
As for wiping it off, this may work for others in some situations, but the spot on mine is definitely a blemish/defect. Cleaning it has zero effect.
I used iklear to clean the screen then wiped it down with a microfibre cloth. That took care of the smudge. Then I slapped a screen protector on it and that took care of the smudge..now to get rid of those air bubbles..lol.
I recommend this brand: http://www.protectionfilms24.com/pr...geraeteklasse=7&marke=Samsung&modell=4603&go=
Arrived in 2 days, made by 3M and doesn't affect my screen clarity at all.
I just realized the same type of smudge on mine today. It's not on top of the screen, but seems like it's under it. Like others, I didn't want to exchange it because everything else works fine plus I'm out of my 30 day period with no exchange.
If I remember, I'm probably going to do a warranty exchange before it ends.
When I was cleaning my screen to put on my cheap eBay screen protector, I noticed the same smudge in the middle of my screen. No amount of cleaning removed it completely. On went the screen protector, and "Voila", smudge disappeared .
BTW, the eBay screen protector is very close to screen feel as the naked screen and is completely clear. Free with the $3.99 shipped silicone case... gotta love eBay!!!

You know, I thought this was a joke until I got the cheap screen protectors that came with the S gel case. Yeah, it disappears. Weird since it looked like the smudge was under the screen.
Phew im glad im not the only one, the smudge is barely noticeable except under light and while the screen is off. Going to try to clean it.
Is the smudge you guys are talking about, blue by chance? I have a slight blue streak underneath my screen since it was purchased. To best describe it, it looks like a shiney blue streak from cleaning with windex that never dries.

[Q] Buffing Out a Scuff On the Screen

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask...
I received my brand new Nexus S today, but I was disappointed to find a scuff on the screen, even under the protector that was shipped with it. Its small enough I don't want to ship it back, but it is annoying. Its def not a scratch. I've tried screen cleaner and rubbing it really hard, but it doesn't go away. I'm not for sure what kind of screen it is, so does anyone have any tips that won't scratch but might give me a chance to remove it?
It's likely to be a imperfection in the oleophobic coating. Normally it takes a few days and can wear off but you seem to have been unlucky. A way to prove it is to clean the screen well with a microfibre cloth - the scuff should now be almost invisible. If after you've touched the screen a few times it becomes much more obvious the diagnosis is confirmed.
Yeah that sounds exactly like the problem. Unfortunately it didn't get better. Its actually just above the display, closer to the camera and speaker. I was just hoping there was a quick fix to buffering it.

Are these scratches on my screen or smth else? (photos and video)

Hi guys! I have an issue with my screen on OnePlus 7 Pro, and I'm not really sure what this is. I never had a thing like this on other phones, my OnePlus 6 had a few scratches, but they never behaved this way. And the thing doesn't even look like a scratch but more of a huge print that doesn't go away.
Here is a picture - imgur.com/a/Smb6rvF After about month of having a phone and it always being in the case and with the default screen protector I've started noticing the image distortion in the same place from time to time, you know like a huge fingerprint or grease on the screen but it would appear at the same place. I thought okay, maybe I've scratched the screen so that I can remove the screen protector and it should be fine. So I did, but the thing stayed there as if it was either placed through screen protector or from the other side. And again, it's not that I never saw a scratch or a crack on the screen, but never this thing.
Then after about a week, the thing grew, you can see the blue line here - imgur.com/a/UI4FQTA
the red one was the initial one that I saw even with screen protector on, and the blue just grew out of the old one. Like I pull the phone from the pocket one day, and it's there. And not like I'm wearing and tearing the phone, just regular stuff - in jeans, inside pocket of the jacket, in the sealed pocket in the backpack. And I live in a big city, and I never notice any sand or small particles on the screen or the case. And it doesn't look like a scratch, but more as if the prints just bound to the screen and don't go away.
imgur.com/a/OnPSqj2 - is a more closeup shot. And again you wouldn't notice the thing at the start of the day when I clean my screen, but by the end, it will collect some grease and more prints and will be showing.
Here's a video what happens when I clean the screen -
imgur.com/a/tprePWI
FYI warranty or anything like that is out of the question since, I bought it during the holiday travel, and the phone is not officially sold in my country. I just wanted to know if there is any solution for this and how to prevent this from happening? Are these scratches but look different because of the new Gorilla Glass version or something like that?
Any help or advice is appreciated, just sad a thing like that happened so early in the life cycle
