[Q] Forced closing loop and metamorph - Captivate General

Got metamorph, tried to install minimalist mod v1.2. It didn't work. Wasn't quiet sure why but tried to use metamporph on kovicon hybrid (icon pack) after i saw someone linked it from the screenshot thread. After i tried to install it, my cellphone has been crashing and/or force closes all the apps till it the phone shuts off. I can't get into recovery mode on the cellphone. The button pressing never worked EVER (even before i the cellphone started doing this). I also uninstalled metamorph but that didn't help.

Flash back to stock with Odin. I have read that Metamorph conflicks with the new Super User, if possible use an earlier version of Super User.

hmm, can only SOME captivates be able to enter recovery mode? or should all of them be able too.. I'm pretty sure that i've done the process right, especially after trying for 1.5 hours....

This does appear to be an issue with some captivates. You will see threads about it, give them a quick read. Can you enter download mode to flsah with Odin one click to restore to stock? You can use ADB reboot recovery.

no luck on download mode either.....

[Q] Soft-bricked my phone. Help?

So last night, I root my Inspire with the 1-click method.
This morning, I notice it won't download anything from the marketplace, no matter how many times I clear market data/cache, download manager cache etc., so I figured I might as well go ahead and flash a custom rom.
I load up the latest Cyanogenmod for my phone on the SD card, flash CWM, and reboot into recovery. However, there's an issue with the 1-click as it turns out that makes recovery boot to a blank screen for some people, including me apparently. So, instead of leaving it as it was and using the fix in the 1-click, I for some reason not terribly clear to me, decide it would be a good idea to pop out the battery. Now, it gets stuck at the HTC screen if I try to power it up normally, and if I do the hold power+vol up+vol down thing to try to get it to boot into recovery, it just sits at a blank, as in off, screen. Googling about leads me to wipe and flash a new rom, but if I can't get in to the phone, how exactly do I Do that?
Also, fiddling with the phone as I write this, I put the gold card in and was able to boot into hboot. I can fix it from here, right?
Edit: It turns out letting hboot do its thing brought it out of the boot loop.
Sorry to waste the time of anyone who read this, but it may serve useful to someone else with this problem.
Edit 2: It still, however, won't let me download Anything from the market. Any suggestions there?

Were you able to re-flash the same ROM or flash a different one?
I re-flashed the same rom, just a stock root.
I can install apps fine by sending them from the market on my Desktop, but every time I try to download something through the market on the phone itself, it starts the download before immediately sutting to a "download unsuccessful, try again later" dialog box.

Try to unmount and remove the SD card and then try to download from market.

[Q] Noob Question/Issue

Hi all, Have been reading here for quite a while before flashing my Sprint Hero.
I used the Z4 Root method, d/l busybox and clockworld recovery as you showed in the video. All worked perfectly. Cleared all of the caches. Flashed with aospMOD 0.9.9.2, and now phone boots into this mod.
One issue is there is no market, I cannot get back to the flash prog to flash the googleapps.apk, which is in the root of my SD card, as well as the Z4 Root prog. When I click on these to install, the HTC Sync App Installer starts and advised me to connect a phone...?... I can go to the Market via the browser and d/l from there, but HTC Sync will not recognize my phone now when attempting to install a new app or just sync. I'd like to play with some different mods, but when I hold down the Phone and Home buttons, I'm brought to the stock recovery which just resets the data in the phone.
If I have not given enough info please let me know,
Any assist would be appreciated...

Well, I remember way back from the early days of FTA that learning a new hobby is quite fun. I simply made a "learning" error; I was NOT rebooting the phone so I could see the Recovery screen, I was merely powering it on and off. Once I hit reboot and saw the Recovery option I realized I hadn't read enough
I initially installed the first recovery image using the terminal commands as outlined on this site; Worked great!
Got it all working now and feel confident in playing around without bricking...

[Q] Need to install clockwork without the market

The Android Market is no longer installed on my Captivate. I have been running Cognition 2.6.32.9 for a while now and decided I needed to upgrade to 4.2.3, so I started doing that following a guide I found that said I needed to disable the lagfix. Once the phone started back up after I disabled the lagfix it seemed to be at default rom settings. It changed the background back to the cognition background, none of my apps were on the home page, etc etc. Another thing I noticed is that I can't find the market anywhere on the phone. I need to install clockwork so that I can install the new version of Cognition. How do I go about doing this?

You can get the market app on their website.
As for cwm, it's usually implamented in custom ROM? Try to reboot in recovery and if you get the green text (cwm 2.5) -> You have it already!
When I go to the market in the browser it says that Rom Manager is already installed, but I can't find it anywhere in the app drawer.

Are you on a custom ROM already? (Cognition I believe you said?) If it's the case, go in recovery using the extended power menu. You don't need Rom Manager to do it for you.
Also, you can re-download Rom Manager even if it says it's installed.
I tried to redownload Rom Manager in the brower. It didn't do anything though. When I went into recovery I was given the option to reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data, and format the internal sd card. I tried to reinstall packages but that didn't seem to do anything. Another thing I noticed is that when I try to connect the phone to my computer the phone doesn't seem to realize it is connected. I don't get the option to turn on the usb connection.
edit: Well now I seem to have bigger problems. I managed to get into recovery and reinstall cognition 2.6, then I got the zip for 4.3 onto the phone. Then I went back into recovery to install that, started installing and then I got an error, and it stopped installing. I tried to install it again, same thing. So I just gave up and went to reboot and now it is stuck at the at&t screen. I can get the screen to turn black for a few seconds by holding the power and volume buttons, but then it goes back to the at&t screen.

Ok you need to give more info on that error.. Were you on 2.2 froyo? If so, you'll need this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
Now for your actual problem.. You'll need to get in download mode:
Unplug usb;
Remove battery;
Hold volume buttons; (don't release no matter what)
Plug the usb;
Put the battery back in.
You might need to try a few times for it to work.
After that, you'll need Odin3 one click downloader (and only that one) to get back to stock.
From there, you'll be able to recover.
I figured it out now. Thanks for the help. I'm on Cognition 4.3 now and it's working perfectly.
just some info for anyone that reads:
sometimes after flashing a custom rom, the market thinks its a new phone, and will show your "purchases" of all your "phones" sometimes you must push install to your "new phone"
also sometimes you need to reboot for the push to go to your phone, or wait about 5 minutes.
but you got it glad to hear!

I May Have Bricked It

I was playing around last night with updating my phone with a different and everything was fine. Today, I installed the proper kernel and it installed and ran fine. I decided I would install a different kernel, one that has audio via USB for the dock and after I selected the file with Odin, I started the install and then I noticed Odin said something about it being finished and removed. Now I started my phone and it just sits at the screen that says Galaxy S. The phone will not start and I cannot get into recovery or download mode. I have tried every button combination I could find online. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get into either download mode to install the kernel again, or recovery so I can just install the zip to reload the software.
Have you tried a jig or adb to get into download mode?
Sent from 234 Elm Street
I have never been able to properly get adb working, I know I am doing something wrong, but I actually just finally got it working. I was able to use One Click Root to have it restart my phone into recovery mode and I was able to reinstall the software and kernel. Everything is going good now, except I can't use the kernel I wanted to use because I don't know if it has CWM3.
This is the kernel that I actually wanna install.

You have SOFT bricked it which means you can get it out of it without JTAG at this point. Go to YouTube and search ODIN 1 Click and watch the video I made to help flash stock firmware.
Any updates OP?
Have you tried taking out and reinserting the battery then volume up, volume down while inserting your USB cable? That saved me one time. Then I bought a JIG.
Thanks for all the help, but I actually figured it out. I had forgotten I installed bootloaders and it changed the button combinations for Continuum.

[Q] Captivate won't boot past GalaxyS

I have a rooted, stock rom captivate. I was installing a new piece of software and it got hung up, wouldn't finish installing. I pulled the battery and restarted it, now it won't go past the GalaxyS screen. I tried pulling the battery, sim and sd card. Didn't help. I can boot into Recovery Mode, but when I try Download mode, it just goes to the GalaxyS screen and stays there. Obviously my first choice is to return it to where it was an hour ago - I have a lot of apps on here. My second choice is to return it to stock - I'm guessing I would have to unroot it anyway when they finally send out the Gingerbread update. I am NOT interested in any custom roms. Can someone help me?
Try getting into download mode.
1) pull out battery
2) reinsert after 10 seconds
3) hold vol + and vol -
4) plug in usb.
flash stock.

OK, that worked! Thanks!! The phone now says "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!" Soooooo... how the hell do I "flash stock"?
And when I do flash to stock, do I first remove the SIM? How about the SD card? Will I lose my apps? My contacts? Will I be "stock" and able to download the Gingerbread update when it comes out?
Thanks again for the help - I've never done any of this before, so a step-by-step help is appreciated. I read through a lot of the threads here for suggestions, but so many of them are in jargon that assumes you've done this a million times before.
Flash a ROM will wipe out everything on your phone. You will need to learn to use one of those 3rd party ROM flash tools and download ROMs for yourself.
Given that you can still boot into recovery mode, maybe you should try factory reset first (clear cache menu in recovery mode). It will also wipe out everything on your phone but you don't need to risk brick your phone when flashing ROMs.
What exactly is the app that caused your problem? And if you have applied any type of lag fix, you may have more troubles than you thought.
OK, I did the clear cache option in Recovery, my phone still just boots to the GalaxyS screen. I searched flashing to stock and found a million different posts, all with different instructions. Is there a quick, safe and simple (for someone who's never done it) way to get my phone up and running?
Another option -- my phone is less than a year old. Can I just return it to AT&T and get a replacement? Will the fact that it was rooted make them refuse?

Since yours is on stick ROM (either 2.1 or 2.2), search for OneClick stock ROM thread which will bring you back to 2.1 or 2.2 easily.

Given the state of your phone, they have no easy way to tell if you're rooted or not
But you will get a refurbished phone as replacement. If you can handle that, it's the easiest way out.
Thanks for the help. Took the phone to the AT&T repair center in town, they shut it off and turned it on, got the same screen, handed me a "new" phone.
