Kinetic scrolling from galaxy s devices on asop style roms? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

OK, not really sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes
I was using a friends Samsung android phone the other day and I was wondering if it would be possible to port the iPhone style 'whiplash' effect they've added to a normal rom?
If you don't know what I'm on about then just go to your settings menu and try to scroll upwards from the top or downwards from the bottom, with a normal rom nothing will happen. The thing I'm on about is when you try to do this and it goes up a bit and then flies back down.
So yeah, my main question is can this be ported to work generally in most menus, or is it an app specific thing they've added?
Thanks in advance guys!
I'm on an HTC hero at the moment using this rom-

Gotta say, I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this is reviews. It's one reason I don't want an aosp rom on my Captivate. It's definitely not app specific because it works in 3rd party apps as well.

Ok, so if its not app specific then could someone find out if this is just a few lines of code that can be pulled and added to an asop rom, or if it's more compacted than that?

[REQUEST]Nexus launcher

ok so ive dowloaded a few "launcher 2" apks floating around and i decided that i really want the REAL one... i want it to look exactly like the one seen on the nexus one... INCULDING THE SCROLLING!! i have one right now that looks exactly like it but the scroll animations arent the same. on the one i have, as soon as the app icon hits the bottom or top of the screen it dissapears completely... and it always has to kind of lock into position... i want the one with the smooth scrolling and the apps kinda roll onto the screen... can anyone help or at least agree with me? cuz i havent seen any complaints about this and to me its a little annoying... thanks all who can help
i think the clockwork mod launcher in the markret is like what i want but it only works on stock 2.1 roms and im on the Ic3 rom btw...
You'll never get the "real" launcher. What you see is what you get. Either deal with it or make your own...Helix launcher is about as close as it gets...Its limited due to hardware.

[Q] Cognition vs. CM6

I've been using Cognition 2.1 and SRE since I got my Captivate. I have to say that I am very pleased with designgears stock rebuilds and they definitely made the user experience of the phone much better.
However, having come from a SE x10a, I never really had the opportunity to run any Cyanogen roms, much less CM6, on a phone meant specifically for Android (I did get it running on my HTC Touch Pro and HD2).
Does anyone have any first hand experience with running CM6 on a "real" Android phone and how does it compare to the current Cognition 2.1.5? Should I be holding my breath for CM6 or are the differences minimal (minus Froyo of course)?
Well, considering Cognition is just sourced together improvements in an all in one package, and Cyanogen mod is re-worked code they aren't even in the same ballpark. If and when CM drops it will be very different from Cognition.
Yeah I've had experience with Cyanogen on a Nexus one, and the speed improvements and big updates that add a lot of features, i used Cognition, and i have a couple gripes. first DG updates too frequently, i hate having to keeping using titanium backup, it literally takes an hour to get all my stuff back the way i want, he updates like everyday i swear. Secondly the updates are really buggy still, i had issues on my phone getting really random errors. Cyan has a ton of developers behind it, it really makes the phone, can't wait for it to be on Captivate.

I'm not sure if I would be willing to give up touch wiz for CM. I really think touch wiz with launcher pro is the way to go. Stock android despite what some really loud people think, is not am improvement over sense and touch wiz. At least not for me.

Hmm well i didn't know for sure, he updates too much, i just stopped after 2.1.1, i hate updating, and flashing, and troubleshooting if something goes wrong haha, i mean Cog is something needed to push development on the Captivate. I mean IMO I'm not a big fan of COG, but its good to know people are working hard on our phone despite all the attention on the Vibrant.

I think it was after 2.1.1 when he started releasing update versions that don't touch /data so leave your apps & settings alone. I do agree though that the releases are too frequent, I'd expect such frequent releases when during the 0.X stage not 2.X.
I'm currently on 2.1.4 and am waiting for 2.1.6 to be released & for other guinea pigs to test it before I upgrade as even just disabling the voodoo lagfix, updating and re-enabling the lag fix is a pain.

Agreed, at least for touchwiz. Not sure about Sense.
Having said that, I understand CM makes changes to stock, so it sounds like it's basically a light skin as well. So not sure if those features are worth it. I love the TW brightness change on notification bar swype. If I knew how to submit ideas to CM, I would submit that. Swiping contacts is very nice too. And of course the notification bar toggles are great.
Launcher pro fixes the rest.
seriously, QQ moar, you're honestly complaining about having too many updates and too much support from the dev community? Look at the other galaxy S forums, they dont even have anything as cool as that, I mean Cognition is just 20 steps rolled into one ROM of what you'll do anyway, stripping many annoying things of the rom out and adding a few patches here and there.. its NOT a vanilla rom, its not anything thats not heavily based on what samsung/ATT put out there.
Its a dude constantly trying to make your phone better, thats hardly a bad thing. You can stick to Cognition 2.1 as i'm doing if you want and just wait for whatever else comes out based on a new samsung/ATT firmware. No one is forcing you to update, read the changelog and if nothing affects you leave your phone as it is.

Yea, I dont mind touchwiz so much. But the one thing I HATE about it is the fact that Samsung did away with the stock Android bluetooth stack and replaced it with one of their own, now we cant use bluetooth game controllers with it.
But other than that, TW with LauncherPro on top of it is pretty good.

I just leave my brightness set to auto. I tried the swiping to change brightness, but didnt like it. One swipe to the left made it go lowest brightness and one swipe to the right made maximum brightness, nothing in between. Thats why I use Auto. But I do love the notification area toggles for Wifi, bluetooth, etc. Just wish they had GPS in there as well like the other phones do.

My MSI Bluetooth GamePad works great. It's the Wii controller that doesn't play well.
I love the development on the Captivate i just don't particularly like all the enhancements that DG has added on the COG ROM. Battery drained like crazy with it. but anyways. yeah TW does have something special about it. some really neat enhancements over that stock experience, i haven't had any experience with Sense but hopefully a ROM will come out soon.
If and when cyan is released for this phone I will swap in a heart beat.
You get a customized light install with all of your favorite mods already installed already. Plus you get updated pushed directly to your phone.
Plus all the stuff that TW has you won't miss.

There is a trick to the brightness slider. In order to keep you from changing brightness accidentally, they made the initial spot you touch a dead zone. What you have to do is if you want the screen to be set somewhere on the lower end of the brightness scale, start swiping on the right side and work your way down. If you want to be on the brighter end of the scale, start all the way to the left and work your way up. If you want to be in the middle, just start at either extreme. It seems complicated at first, but it gets to be second nature really fast.

I'll miss plenty. Also, since samsung doesn't release driver source code, CM to leave the galaxyies behind when 3.0 comes out until (and if) samsung releases or leaks some 3.0 roms.
If I update to Cyanogen (when it comes out) or Cognition will I lose Swype?

[REQ]stock rom with mods

I don't want to come out as needy and disrespectful. This is just a request.
Can anyone creat a custome ROM that is as close to stock as possible?
With a few exceptions. Of course remove all the bloat ware, creat a new status bar by removing the t-mobile logo that waists space and the previously used apps (we all know how to hold the home button), and lastly make a numeric battery. Try not to use the circle batterys but stay as close to the original as possible.
Ooh as well fix sence 3.0 and have lockscreen icons.
Also I do use the caller I'd feature T-Mobile provides I don't want $4 down the drain so.please keep that function.

if I ever get some free time (not likely in the next 2 weeks) I will start cooking up some roms for us. I'm in the middle of a big transition right now and just haven't had time to sit down and start tearing roms apart. -____-
op: have you checked out the UOT kitchen? you can accomplish most of the status bar and battery tweaks you want through it.
the bloatware I would just uninstall with TiBu or any other program capable of uninstalling system apps.
the sense 3.0 lockscreen... not too sure. I've always been an aosp guy so I haven't spent much time modding sense.
Im in the same boat as queen I have something in the works also soone as I finish this rom for my epic !

No rush guys this phone isn't going anywhere. I would love to learn how to cook. I need to get over the big learning curve. The only reasone I ask is because there are specific files I don't know if are usefull or not. Like for example the new caller id feature I don't know witch files are associated with it. I do freeze as much as I can in tibp but I feel like its still slowing the phone down or taking up space. I've been a windows user a long long time and feel like when you uninstall something it's not the same as having a clean install. I can't get over that mindset. BTW thanks for the quick responce.

Those two changes require a framework hack, which requires another hack in services to disable signature verification. I've always wanted to remove those damn "Recent Apps" from the status bar, but only recently learned how to disable signature verification for when the framework is modified.
We have some amazing devs I'm sure sence 3.0 framework will be easly modified. Although I'm sure you can change the status bar without framwork mods like they did on the MyTouch 4g. Unless I'm wrong. Also thanks for revolution.

Until ROMs start coming out, use titanium backup to uninstall any of the bloatware you don't want. I uninstalled just about every app on my phone, and installed better versions of the ones I wanted, and in one case I uninstalled a stock app, then downloaded the same app from the market.
After getting rid of all the bloatware I noticed drastic battery life improvement, so I started looking at other things that were always running in the background, two of them were the preinstalled note pad app and Google Maps. I would stop them, and they would be back running in a matter of moments. I uninstalled both of them, downloaded Google Maps and ColorNote. For some reason, Maps is never running in the background any more. Not sure why that worked, but it did.
Well as I said in the post before I'm using the freeze function for now so I don't ruin anything. It goes into why I don't like doing that.

Means you have to copy SystemUI.apk to your computer, decompile it, re-write part of the code, re-compile it back into an .apk, then install it on the phone.
One of those "easier said then done" things, but not terribly difficult if you read through the thread and take the time to install the tools you need to your computer.
I'm intrigued by this, but there are other things on my list for this phone before I get around to something like this.
Is it just me or is the mt4gs forum dead? I know its the summer and all but wow. Not an attemp at anything. I'm not talking about custome roms. I'm talking about everything.

Yeah it's awful. I'm at work all day refreshing for new content, and I'm left disappointed about 90% of the time. I need something to flash!!!
I've actually just decided to try recruiting devs from the Sensation forum. Given the similarity between the devices, I'm hoping that it wouldn't be too difficult for someone out there to help us out...

I wasn't expecting much dev support here in the beginning. I think ports will start showing up slowly but don't expect it to be anything like the Sensation subforum.
it's a shame because this is a killer device that can run anything thrown at it. with some patience and luck we'll get some devs who are interested in creating things for the slide... maybe from the G2 section once more people start changing over.
at least there's really nothing function-wise on the stock rom that makes it unusable for me. once the bloat is gone and ADW ex (or whatever home replacement you like) is loaded, it's pretty much all I need.. some aosp love would sure be nice though for me.
Yea, but it's a new device...and an expensive one so a lot of people don't have one yet.
For early adopters it's hard sometimes, my approach has just been to try to document everything as thoroughly as possible so that when devs do come, they have less work to do.
Of course, the best way to get something done is to do it yourself - i'd like to make my own ROM for this device, but i'm a long way from that. It'll happen, but i'm pretty positive that by the time I get it all figured out Cyanogenmod will have been ported to this device.
Still won't stop me from doing it though, i'm too curious.
Meantime, posting up everything we can learn about the phone will help in getting a custom ROM when a dev willing to do so comes through here.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming from the HD2 and the Galaxy St Vibrant so anyone who knows those phones understands.... I was thinking this forum would be a little more lively.
I've gone from refreshing a lot to refreshing once a day.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA Premium App
Yeah. Totaly. Look at the phones I've owned in the signature. I remember going back to the razer the forums were packed with hex mods and java games. Maybe not this specific one. Still this is the biggest mt4gs forum.
Someone above noted that the phone is new and expensive. That is definitely a factor. Also, from what I saw, T-Mobile didn't really market this phone heavily before it came out. Right at the launch I saw a good amount of ads but not long before. Like the SGS2 has gotten real advertising saturation. This phone is a real contender but because it doesn't have a huge screen it received, and continues to receive, less attention.
Things will pick up but at this point I have prepared myself for a wait. Devs will eventually get the word on how good it is and then things will pick up but it will take some time. For me, the hardware we have is worth the wait.
I did have a thought. Find out if there are devs working on this phone. If not, we could look at collectively getting a phone to a dev that could get it moving.

Thanks, glad you're enjoying the ROM
Just a couple of questions, so I hope you see this because I haven't posted ten times yet...
#1 no American or Canadian English setting (on initial setup, and under language settings)
#2 where's the Beats Audio?
Still love it, though. Noticeable difference in speed without background apps, and much better internal storage. Also, mildly improved battery life.

It's based on the stock EU ROM, so no, there's no American or Canadian English. I could add them but it'd add to the size of the system or no real reason. I'm sure you can live with the Queen's English
The Beats Audio doesn't show up anywhere in the UI, it just works its magic in the background. I even notice a difference when I use it with my cheap £20 eBay headphones so I know it's working
If you've seen other ROMs with the Beats Audio showing up as a setting on the UI, that's probably because they have the Music app from ROMs of newer phones. I might see if I can get that ported to my ROM now, come to think of it. Thanks for that idea
P.S. to further improve battery life, go to your sound settings and turn off all the sensor based stuff if you haven't already, that makes quite a difference!
Hmmm...haven't noticed a difference with my 20 buck Panasonics, or in my car, though that's with an FM transmitter (a good one, though).
I guess I'll live with the Queen's English, though the patriotic side of me cringes, eh?...
Weird, maybe it depends on the music you listen to. Stuff with heavy bass sounds better at least
God save our gracious Queeeeen
I just tried to stick the /system/apps folder from a Sensation XE onto my ChaCha... The ChaCha didn't like it too much. I'll experiment more later, see what I can get working. Looking around the XE ROM, there's certainly stuff here which shows whether or not Beats is working in the actual UI, so I might add some of that in if it plays nice with the ChaCha.

Stock ROM feel on CM7?
I have been using Chacha for almost half year now, and I like it to core. Have tried almost all ROMs so far. CWM's backup/restore functionality is pure bliss. At times when your hands are itchy, go ahead, mess up your system, do all your experiments. When done, just restore and you are back to your normal mood! Excellent!!
About the ROMs, I try them a lot, but finally do settle down to ROMs based on stock, as my daily ROMS. These are ROMS which I try my own with some experimental versions, or ones available here like from Hexgore . The reason is, there are quite a bunch of apps on Stock ROMS which are perfectly tuned for Chacha's small screen, and hence I find them more efficient than other alternative apps. Here are apps I find too good and difficult to part from.
Mail App
Dialer App
Messages App
I agree that there would be a lot better apps (like K9 for mail). But the easy of bigger icons, easy to tap organization of icons, just make be feel to stay with this mail app.
Now, coming to point, Will it be possible to get these apps work in non-Stock environment. Similar to Gapps package, if we can get to package these apps, it will be great.
I myself, will try these experiments one by one, and report my observations. But just would like to know if there are any like-minded people like me. Please comment. Thanks.

[Q] Roms: What do you lose? What can you replace?

I've been trying to sift through everything that's out there about different roms, but am still unclear on a number of items.
So, I have a choice between touchwiz android 4.1 based roms, or open source roms. Moving away from Touchwiz what is it exactly I would be losing?
Does S-note disappear? S-memo? Is there any app that would replace the s-memo function to double tap the screen and bring up a floating note?
How much of multi window is lost? How much can be replaced? Is cascade view still something that can be added back in?
What s-pen functions are lost? What can be replaced (or improved)?
Overall, if I were to leave Touchwiz entirely, what is lost and what can be replaced with non Samsung counterparts?
Currently, I have Android Revolution HD with Holo Launcher HD on top of that. Any better suggestions? I went with Android Revolution because I was tired of reading and had to start somewhere, so I'm definitely also interested in opinions on a better setup.
Thanks.

Currently, I have Android Revolution HD with Holo Launcher HD on top of that. Any better suggestions? I went with Android Revolution because I was tired of reading and had to start somewhere, so I'm definitely also interested in opinions on a better setup.
Thanks.

Are you just curious about other ROM's or is there something that you need that touch wiz does not offer?
Because as far as I know you will lose S Pen function going to a non-touch wiz ROM and that defeats the reason for owning the Note 10.1.
If you want to see what some of the other ROM's offer Zedomax has a very good web page http://rootgalaxynote.com/. Lots of content for all version of the galaxy note.
He has video reviews of a lot of popular ROM's and you can sign up for his news letters if you like what he has to say, one that I like is "ROM of the week"
If you want to jump right to his Galaxy Note 10.1 ROM's page go here http://rootgalaxynote.com/category/galaxy-note-10-1-roms/
And here is a link to his you tube video page where he has video's on just about everything http://www.youtube.com/user/zedomax Max seems like a very cool guy that love's life and ANDROID

Thanks, but I've been over all that. I just still feel uncertain about aspects. I see alot of things that are essentially alluded to, but rarely clearly laid out. For instance, in your response, you say "as far as I know you will lose the s-pen function..." Whereas as I was starting to be under the impression that while you would lose many items such as snote, you would still have the spen, and be able to use apps like GMD S PenControl.
I'm not saying what I just wrote is true, but that it is still a point of some confusion, among other things.

That's why I posted the links to rootgalaxynote.com because Max goes over the functions that are gained and lost.
Take the time to download and watch them,..... its very helpful.
Revolt Rom video would be a good place to start http://androidrooted.com/file/GalaxyNote10.1/roms/RevoltJB/RevoltJBROMNote10.1.mp4

I watched a bunch of them. On all the AOSP roms I watched him review he just doesn't even mention the s-pen, and in the comments section will just be a few people asking what the deal for the spen is and not having any reply to it.
I agree for the most part, those videos were very helpful. I used one of his videos to root my note. And I'm sure it exists somewhere, but in the time I spent mucking through everything there is, I haven't found where it is clearly laid out what you lose, and what can be done to regain those functions when going to AOSP. I just see bits and pieces buried here and there. I suppose that's what happens when I come this late to it all, the backlog of info is immense, and things covered early on get buried.

That video does talk about s pen function @ about the 2:00 mark.
GMD spen controller ........ you could contact the developer ... here is the video link on you tube for the app in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=e3WGO-OZQ2k
Do you know about the 15 minute return policy on the play store?????????
If you are not happy with the app you can get a refund if you un-install it before 15 minutes have passed. https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/134336?hl=en

I don't mean any of this in a harsh tone, but instead to hopefully get what I'm looking for:
If you would like to answer my questions, great. If you want to keep pointing at things when I tell you I've already seen them, please stop.
The purpose of this question was to determine what would be worth investing time and effort in and to gain some insight from people who have done it themselves already.
Again, if you would like to answer the original questions, I would appreciate that. These have not been what I'm looking for in terms of being a brief concise, summary, and overview
I get that you lose things from going to an AOSP, and that you can replace certain items with apps. My question is about what exactly do you lose, what are the apps that replace it, and how good of a job do they do.

Of coarse you do.
.
Why don't you just stick with a rooted stock ROM?
I'd like to be able to keep up with new development regardless of what Samsung does. All the touchwiz roms seem to be limited to 4.1 (unless I've misunderstood). So sticking with touchwiz based roms will could be an issue depending on what Samsung does with updates.

From what I understand you will loose any apps that require the TC framework - S-Notes don't work and some other apps...
However there are alternative apps like lecture notes that are, apparently supported using the s-pen.... If you read through the CM10 rom threads you might get a better idea, or ask there if it works, you might get a definite answer...
I believe I've read that the s-pen works but I like having my status as "Official" so I can use my Allcast hub... You loose that ability if the status changes....
The only difference between ASOP based and stock/stock based is the TW framework. But most of the features are replaceable.
This is what I have done to make my life easy with ASOP roms
What i miss
A- No replacement yet
- Mutiwindow - No replacement yet
- Lasso screenshot.
- Miss the samsung keyboard - This is the best keyboard for handwriting recognition. No issues with my horrible handwriting. Wish somebody ported it.
B- Alternatives
-Get most of the spen gestures ( except for lasso screen shot) using GMD spen
- S note replacement - use lecture notes and triggered via gmd spen gesture
Rest of the stuff is all there in asop based roms for my use.
Big positives
- Parnoid features.
- Love the status bar at the top option.
-Navigation bar sized down.
-Plenty of small tweaks
-Another big positive is the availability of USB mass storage mode. Very very helpful
Will update this post as more things come to my mind
What about battery life between stock and AOSP roms?
