2.2.20 update unrooted me, help - Droid 2 Android Development

So I just bought my Droid 2 the other day and could not resist the temptation to root it. Well, that process was easy enough through tutorials on here, but now i've stumbled upon a problem. When I awoke this morning, there was a notification to update to 2.2.20 (i had rooted it with 2.2.19).
No serious issues here... the update went fine and no bricking or anything. I still have all my apps and my current phone version is 2.2.20. My problem is that I lost the root-enabled features! superuser permissions is still an app, but the apps that access root are unable to (barnacle, setCPU, etc).
I'm not sure if this is as simple as going through the process again, or since it's been rooted do i need to do something different this time? I'm somewhat familiar with UNIX so i shouldn't need a fully dumby-proof explanation, but I'm not familiar enough where a barebone explanation will do it either. If anyone can help it'd be great. No rush though, phone still works i just really miss my wifi tether!

I think you can reroot using the same method

Install an update or do the .sbf recovery.

Alternatively, go in /system/bin and remove su and busybox and restore any removed system apps, as long as you haven't done any changes

[Q] some quick questions

i've looked around this forum for hours..there is a tooon of info on here and im just tired of trying to sort through this.
first off, i recently updated my captivate to froyo 2.2 and lost everything i had on my previous rooted 2.1. before i did the froyo update i made a complete backup with titanium backup. My question is, can I recover that back up on 2.2 if i reroot my phone and run titanium?
if so, whats the best way to root the captivate on froyo 2.2?
sorry for the noooob questions, but all the information on here is a little overwhelming. so i appreciate any information you guys can give me with as little flaming as possilbe
thanks
I think all ROMs (2.2) are rooted since they are all custom made by devs. just install titanium backup and restore
I dont see any superuser permissions (or whatever its called) in my app drawer. And when i try to run titanium backup it wont work

Did you load a rom or just flash 2.2? If you loaded a rom made by a dev it would be rooted. As far as getting your stuff back all you need to do is use a one click root and run tibu. Or find any 2.2 rom and flash through cwm and run tibu.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
I just flashed the leaked version of 2.2. Do you happen to have a link to the one click root for 2,2. I found a couple threads on here. Thanks in advance

You can try z4 root from the market or try that gunmans thread for one click root in the dev section. Im in my phone so its not easy to give links.

You can also use the Sideload Wonder Machine to install non-Market apps and rooting isn't necessary before hand.

Rooted???

I'm having a really hard time with the rooting of this phone ... I can't get the update.zip to wrk. All it does is starts to unpack the files then goes to a screen with a triangle over the android guy then I have to do a battery pull !!! I keep reading and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Get z4root off here and run it. It will hang up the first time. Pull the battery and restart your phone. Then run z4root again. This time it will root your phone.

I've tried it it hangs everytime even after a battery pull

You need to be more specific, there are different steps to take if you're working from 2.1-update1 or 2.2, sounds to me like you're following steps for customizing 2.1-update1 when you should be upgrading to 2.2, check out the link in my signature - should be pretty helpful...

This would be if you're trying to root from 2.1-update1
just use super one click, it is more reliable i have found.
and i had the same issue with the screen sitting at the android guy with exclamation point.
if you hit the home button again i believe the screen comes back and you can see the messages and the recovery menu.
I'm running 2.2 .... No the home key didn't take me back to recovery had to battery pull each time...I used super one click and it said it was successful but I'm not seeing that I have anymore control or access to stuff!!!

And this is why it's important to ask questions before ANSWERING, when you're not sure of what the poster is actually trying to do.
Ignotno, go back and re-read the original thread for the 2.2 leak, it comes pre-rooted so you shouldn't have to do anything. If you're having problems with root, then you should try superoneclick (as noted above).
You're following processes for customizing a stock 2.1-update1 phone, you should go back to my newbie guide and read the steps for customizing 2.2.

rooting doesnt open up a magic door with all kinds of cool stuff.
Rooting just unlocks the door, you need to open it and do all the cool stuff.
download a tool call Quickreboot from the market.
open it and choose REBOOT
it should ask you for Superuser permission.
tell it yes, and the phone should reboot.
if it tells you you dont have root permission then you are not rooted yet
if it works then you have been rooted and you are probably trying to root the 2.2 rom via the 2.1 method and i do not know if that works.
download the prerooted 2.2 and flash it via odin.
it is already rooted and you do not have to do anything else.

This made me laugh... mostly because when I first started looking at rooting I also thought it would magically make my phone amazing
And just to add a quick point; you would also know you have Root Access if the SuperUser application appears in your application drawer...
Glad I can make you chuckle... yes I did notice it and as far as its concerned does nothing on my phone that I see

It doesn't "do" anything per-say, what it does is stores the names of programs which you have given superuser access (once you've done so)
The easiest way to test is (as stated above) to download some sort of ROOT app (root explorer, quick boot, etc.) and when you run them for the first time you should get a screen asking permission for the superuser access, once given this access it has read/write access to your system files (that's basically all root is).
You'll want to do a lot of reading on the forums before you attempt using any of these themes/mods/roms as you'll want a better understanding of the process before you get started.
Nice comment thank you ... You clarified alot abig help.. Yes it is rooted all is well it hangs once while, if I try doing to much!

Since you're rooted (and sounds that you're still on stock 2.2 framework) I would suggest getting the EA11 clockwork recovery installed (if you haven't)
then go over and flash the pick and pack EA11 rom (this is the stock 2.2 framework with all of the bloat programs removed, and i'ts deodexed so that you can then flash theme's over it to customize the appearance)
After you have pnp i would then flash the new EA11 Voodoo kernel (This is a system mod that changes the EXT storage system, which in turn speeds up the phone and saves a little battery life for being faster.) This will fix your hang problems (once you actually enable Voodoo lagfix through the recovery menu) instruction is all posted in threads on the forums here, refer to my newbie guide if needed (link in my signature.)
After that take a look at the EA11 themes you have to choose from, if you're interested in changing appearance.
Good luck!

Rooting Difficulty?

Just wondering where the MyTouch rates as far as rooting difficulty? Are other android devices generally harder or easier to root? I have rooted 3 MyTouches with no difficulty at all, but it seems like some people have quite the time trying to get it done.
Well the sticky root guide in the developer thread was pretty straight forward. It was my first time rooting and to me the guide was a lot less daunting than others I came across. But for some reason I lost superuser

The MyTouchHD is stupid easy to root. I had it rooted with s=off before i even left the t-mobile store.
I'm in the same boat i have no clue why some people have such a difficult time rooting this phone.
the process i used was
Prior to even getting the phone
Download the VISIONary.apk and stored it on the SDcard
Download the root.sh script file
when i got the phone
installed the Astro File Manager via the market
installed the Term Emulator via the market
installed VISIONary via astro
Ran VISIONary
from the term emulator
Code:
$ su
# cd /sdcard/root
# sh root.sh
and i was rooted with s=off.. no clue why it's so hard to manage to do that.
The method above doesn't work at least for me.... getting real irritated .... root just not sticking can temp root fine.... any advice ive tried over and over reading over and over i memorized the terminal part...pls help i really dont wanna do the gfree way just feels to dangerous to revert
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I have only used the Gfree way. Yea it would take a little work to go back..but worth it.
Plus if it really came down to it I have insurance on my phone...I would just run it over and suck up the $100 for a new one.
Just use gfree. Its the only method that works %100 when done correctly.

I had lots of problems using thoses ways too the gfree way worked for me.

Dude, you guys are doing waaay to much. Safest, fastest most reliable way is always "Super One-Click"... click temp root.. then when its done click regular root. Now u gotta perm root with s=off. Then goto market, install Rom Manager and install CWR and your on your way.
Idk why everyone made it so complicated when its easy as hell the way i just said.
I was stumped reading it because I do NOT like adb at all. But i tried something and found it to work within 10 minutes.
Hope this helps someone out.

I only know that in my own experience it seems hit or miss even with gfree. I've personally attempted rooting 4 different mt4g's with gfree and only 2 of them worked. The other two would not set the system r/w no matter what method I tried (Visionary, one-click, gfree), so I could never get them to root. The two good ones rooted right away with no trouble.

Uninstalling busybox

Since nobody bothered to respond to my other post, I'm just re-posting... I need to get busybox off of my phone. Root Checker says it's still installed, but I've odined the factory ed1 rom twice now. How did I get busybox off? And for those of you who are going to ask why? So I can send it in without getting hit with the $499 charge for voiding the warranty.

I just said this in the other thread:
IMO I don't think it matters honestly, they're not gonna run root checker at the factory... all they want to see is that it powers on and works and there's no physical damage, if they see something glaringly obvious like a custom rom or the superuser app then yeah they'll ding you for it
as for removing it without root I wouldn't know, if you knew how to decompile/recompile rom packages you could remove it from the Odin package then flash it.. also it's in the market, maybe try uninstalling it from there or under 'all' applications tab in applications settings
I don't know how extensive the process is that they go through with checking the phones, which is why I wanted to make sure it was not on there. I suppose if I'm not getting a lot of replies, then I'll assume it's really not that big of a deal and just leave it on the phone. Thanks for the reply.

use root explorer to delete system/xbin/busybox I would imagine Odin would do it for you. Im pretty sire that app your using Is installing busybox. Delete busybox manually with root exp. Then use that app to see if it reinstalls it!

Did you reformat with the pit file too? If so I don't see how there could be any remnants after that...
As I said in the other thread, after doing all of that, if anything is there, then it came in the default rom.
I odined using both the pit, and (supposedly) the stock ed1 rom. And then I updated with the OTA to ee4. Busybox still remains. Just so everyone knows, I am not rooted, so I can't access the system files. I wanted to stay stock.
If you used the pit and stock odin, you're fine.

The app you are using is installing busybox in the system/bin folder. Dont use the root checker app after you Odin stock if you dont want busybox. I just deleted busybox from both system/xbin and system/bin, used root checker and busybox reinstalled to system/bin.

deleting superuser with ICS

to start, i'm running version 4.0.4 of stock ICS, and my bootloader is still unlocked I had rooted before the OTA came out, but now I don't really care to have root permissions and was planning on deleting superuser if at all possible (just so everything is clean and untouched). I haven't really been keeping up with everything for the past while, and have a couple of questions.
I'm assuming that in order to delete the current version of SU binary installed on my phone i'll have to gain root access again seeing as how I lost it after the update. can I just flash an old version of cwm and then install a newer version of SU? also, what's the easiest way to remove SU? I was planning on removing it through adb, but i'm not sure if that's the simplest way to go about things. any help is greatly appreciated.
