Rooting Difficulty? - myTouch 4G General

Just wondering where the MyTouch rates as far as rooting difficulty? Are other android devices generally harder or easier to root? I have rooted 3 MyTouches with no difficulty at all, but it seems like some people have quite the time trying to get it done.

Well the sticky root guide in the developer thread was pretty straight forward. It was my first time rooting and to me the guide was a lot less daunting than others I came across. But for some reason I lost superuser

Did you use the gfree method? The other ones seem hit or miss since the OTA.

Ya I did use the gfree method. The su app is corrupted tho... Ive been rooted since last Month and this problem just started today

My old mytouch was pretty easy, my Vibrant was ridiculously easy, my G2 was fairly easy and my MT4G was not bad at all. My hardest time was with my wife's MT Slide. I actually had to learn ADB for that one. Good knowledge but it was quite the learning process.

The MyTouchHD is stupid easy to root. I had it rooted with s=off before i even left the t-mobile store.
I'm in the same boat i have no clue why some people have such a difficult time rooting this phone.
the process i used was
Prior to even getting the phone
Download the VISIONary.apk and stored it on the SDcard
Download the root.sh script file
when i got the phone
installed the Astro File Manager via the market
installed the Term Emulator via the market
installed VISIONary via astro
Ran VISIONary
from the term emulator
Code:
$ su
# cd /sdcard/root
# sh root.sh
and i was rooted with s=off.. no clue why it's so hard to manage to do that.

The method above doesn't work at least for me.... getting real irritated .... root just not sticking can temp root fine.... any advice ive tried over and over reading over and over i memorized the terminal part...pls help i really dont wanna do the gfree way just feels to dangerous to revert
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

I have only used the Gfree way. Yea it would take a little work to go back..but worth it.

Plus if it really came down to it I have insurance on my phone...I would just run it over and suck up the $100 for a new one.

Just use gfree. Its the only method that works %100 when done correctly.

i tried doing this 3 times today and it didnt work at all. I cant get the superuser app to stay in my drawer, but i lose root. I guess i will have to try the gfree way. I tried it with both visionary 11 and 14

I had lots of problems using thoses ways too the gfree way worked for me.

Dude, you guys are doing waaay to much. Safest, fastest most reliable way is always "Super One-Click"... click temp root.. then when its done click regular root. Now u gotta perm root with s=off. Then goto market, install Rom Manager and install CWR and your on your way.
Idk why everyone made it so complicated when its easy as hell the way i just said.
I was stumped reading it because I do NOT like adb at all. But i tried something and found it to work within 10 minutes.
Hope this helps someone out.

I only know that in my own experience it seems hit or miss even with gfree. I've personally attempted rooting 4 different mt4g's with gfree and only 2 of them worked. The other two would not set the system r/w no matter what method I tried (Visionary, one-click, gfree), so I could never get them to root. The two good ones rooted right away with no trouble.

real frusterating
i cant seem to root this damn phone for the life of me ive tried and tried and tried

Just tried the super one click way i must be missing something still s-on pls post what you did

There are NO one click root options for the MyTouchHD. You must do it one of the ways posted in the development section. I believe Option94 on here once went to try it [create a one click root process] and and it wouldn't work correctly.
Thanks...thats what i thought..well his method was "semi-automated" you still had to run commands via terminal, but the fact my anti-virus came up with a trojan alert is what worried me, but i'll just root his MT4G the step by step way!

No problem this phone is a breeze to root. i've personally tried every method out there and had success every time.
There is a one click root method.. Via visionary from modaco.. All you have to do is turn s-off manually.
Happy rooting
Antivirus software will occasionally flag root packages as virii because, well, they ARE exploits. Frankly, as long as you're getting it from here or another reputable site, I wouldn't worry about it.

VISIONary is not a true rooting tool. Root your phone with it then turn your phone off. See what happens.
VISIONary will give you temp root so you can permaroot it.
to the N'th degree you are correct, in the real world not so much.
Visionary has a permaroot option.... never used it, I temp root then use root.sh... takes like 2 seconds...

Rooting allows you to have permanent SU access to the ~/system files. VISIONary nor the Permaroot button allow you to do this. Permaroot your phone, try to flash anything to the /system file bank. It will not stick. It's simply just a "rooting" tool to help you gain permanent access to those file via turning the security protocol off. as soon as you turn off the phone everything goes back to normal.

How to root S-Off HTC Desire S

For anyone that has had difficulty rooting the HTC Desire S.
Having had my HTC Desire S made S-Off by Androf ( Root internet cafe on Edgware Rd London ) I noticed that there are a few methods to root the DS.
Most of which are quite complicated but alas I managed to find a simple method.
The Gingerbreak 1.20 APK manages to root any S-Off DS quickly and easily, simply download the app directly to the phone or download and transfer to the phone. Once that has been done simply install the APK file onto the phone, once that is done simply run the app and follow the instructions and then your phone should say something along the lines of there was a mistake and try a manual reboot to check if Superuser is installed.
For a few people such as myself you may notice that once you run the Gingerbreak APK the phone reboots itself and doesn't work, if this happens to you then simply format your SD card and remount it and try again and "voila" you should have superuser installed and root access on the DS.
Hope this helps anyone that may have encountered the same problems as me.

Don't fear! I believe that I'm the same boat as you, also coming from a TOPAZ and WM65, so any daft question feel happy to ask me (not that I'll be able to answer them!) I've had a sharp learning curve over the last 6weeks and my first Android device!
There are a few ways of knowing if you have route access.
First thing to check is if you have superuser access, if you can't find that out then simply go to the market and download an app called route check and that will tell you if you are rooted.
Hope this helps.
Ron
Ok, thanks guys. Couldn't find route checker but got something similar that told me I don't have SU rights - this apk installed fine for me tho.
Anyway, think I'll have a scout around and see what I'm actually trying to do and if I need to!
Thanks again

You haven't looked very hard...
Its the first sticky thread in the Dev section of this forum.

You must be S-OFF to use it though.
I was about to post a thread asking the same question. I have a SOFF phone and wanted to know how to root it without getting into trouble.
Edit: successfully rooted my phone.

Dont people use the search anymore???
how to root s-on device? or how to s-off my DS??
My understanding is that rooting an S-on phone, if possible, only achieves a temp root that is lost on reboot. S-Off at present is only possible with xtc clip (hardware device) ( =lots of money). Software method is likely coming soon (ish) via alpharev team.
Suggest googling xtc and/or alpharev.

Can you please provide some additional information about your device.
Your ROM version, HBOOT version, have you made the phone S-OFF? etc
then we'll probably be able to help

Should I root?

I'm really on the edge with rooting. I really want to do it, but I'm new to android and this is my first android phone. I'm afraid I might brick my phone or worst. I do plan on doing google search of each step before performing it on the phone.
I am in the same position as you, I am scared to root but I know it will make my phone much better. I decided to wait it out until the bugs on the phone are worked out. This way if anything happens then you still have your warranty.

rooting is no big deal! with the revolutionary tool it's completely automated so not possible to brick unless you install the wrong rom on your device. Not to mention once you root you can unroot if you needed to send device back for warranty issues so it's a win-win situation
Do it. Just read all the how to's on revolutionary. Really, really easy to do.
The only device easier to root than this was my wife's G2x. Very simple root procedure. Just follow the steps. Also there are usually tutorials on YouTube. Watch them and then go for it.

Hi, I am at the same position like you. My sensation is first Android phone, and it is not Rooted yet. Probably I won't root it, becouse for me is enough fast and functionally. I would root it, if i wouldn't lose warranty. Ok, you can unroot it, but what if one day sensation just won't turn on? There is no chance to unroot it than.

if you follow the guide in the android development section, it's pretty damn hard to brick it the guide is noobproof. I looked through the guide, and I think none of the steps are "brickable" even if you mess up, unless you pull the USB cable in the middle of the process for no reason.

Bone what kind of roms are you using ?
I dont understand. why newbs like you wanna root your phone... you have the latest fastest phone in the market with the latest firmware (almost) and you wanna root.....
I have a SGS2 and dont even feel the need to root it, and besides for customisation there are so many launchers and icon packs and stuff.
on the other hand if you guys really want Titanium back up an the other stuff then I understand :/
But still I would say not worth the rooting atleast yet.. may be when ICECREAM SANDWICH is OUT
All done and rooted. It was easy as I followed the steps. Just don't make the stupid mistake I made. Don't extract a file unless it tells you. I extracted every file I downloaded with winrar and I couldn't install them on the phone from the sd root, because i extracted them lol

That is how you learn the best just remember don't unrar the .zip's they are for the clockwork to install scripts and roms.
So when you open the file and you see something like META-INF/system you gone to far

You are so right. I learned so much just by rooting this phone.
.. another thing bothers me, as former Desire user I did rooted device with Unrevoked tool, for one reason: use titanium backup and move apps to sd card, but now with Sensation I did not have that problems, all apps I installed had an option "move to sd", and I mean all o them .. so, if I'm still not into changing stock rom, rooting is really not necessary?

okay guys..

i hope to god this is the last question i ask, but is there a simple root for either linux/windows thatll root the phone? ive tried doing the command thing and i get to the adb shell try to do the '/data/local/psneuter/' then it fails (this was done using a windows computer with adb on it)
thanks guys, and sorry about the endless questions, but i greatly appreciate it, im new to HTC root im so used to moto being easily rooted
but anyway, thanks

If you see S-Off on the bootloader screen, then you are S-Off, which is the ONLY thing that the Revolutionary method accomplishes. However, if you read the information on the site (the FAQ), it provides the file you need to flash to get root. Once you flash that file, you will have everything you need to start making backups, customizing, and flashing other software. The Revolutionary method is by far one of the easiest and best methods of obtaining S-Off for a device like the Tbolt.

rooting 1.85

Hi guys,
Just got the HTC One X about a week ago and the weird thing is, I was able to root the damn thing the first day I got it but the phone had some defect and I just got a new one today. It is still on 1.85. No matter what I tried, I am not able to root it. I was able to root it the first time using the one click method, and today I have tried both the one click method and the newer adb method. Ive been at it for hours with no luck. I have never had any trouble rooting phones before. I am honestly willing to pay like 30 bucks if someone can help me root the damn thing. Please help!
