Rooted??? - Samsung Mesmerize

I'm having a really hard time with the rooting of this phone ... I can't get the update.zip to wrk. All it does is starts to unpack the files then goes to a screen with a triangle over the android guy then I have to do a battery pull !!! I keep reading and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Get z4root off here and run it. It will hang up the first time. Pull the battery and restart your phone. Then run z4root again. This time it will root your phone.
Just when you think you have it idiot proof, they come out with a better idiot.

I've tried it it hangs everytime even after a battery pull

You need to be more specific, there are different steps to take if you're working from 2.1-update1 or 2.2, sounds to me like you're following steps for customizing 2.1-update1 when you should be upgrading to 2.2, check out the link in my signature - should be pretty helpful...

This would be if you're trying to root from 2.1-update1

just use super one click, it is more reliable i have found.
and i had the same issue with the screen sitting at the android guy with exclamation point.
if you hit the home button again i believe the screen comes back and you can see the messages and the recovery menu.

I'm running 2.2 .... No the home key didn't take me back to recovery had to battery pull each time...I used super one click and it said it was successful but I'm not seeing that I have anymore control or access to stuff!!!

And this is why it's important to ask questions before ANSWERING, when you're not sure of what the poster is actually trying to do.
Ignotno, go back and re-read the original thread for the 2.2 leak, it comes pre-rooted so you shouldn't have to do anything. If you're having problems with root, then you should try superoneclick (as noted above).
You're following processes for customizing a stock 2.1-update1 phone, you should go back to my newbie guide and read the steps for customizing 2.2.

rooting doesnt open up a magic door with all kinds of cool stuff.
Rooting just unlocks the door, you need to open it and do all the cool stuff.
download a tool call Quickreboot from the market.
open it and choose REBOOT
it should ask you for Superuser permission.
tell it yes, and the phone should reboot.
if it tells you you dont have root permission then you are not rooted yet
if it works then you have been rooted and you are probably trying to root the 2.2 rom via the 2.1 method and i do not know if that works.
download the prerooted 2.2 and flash it via odin.
it is already rooted and you do not have to do anything else.

This made me laugh... mostly because when I first started looking at rooting I also thought it would magically make my phone amazing
And just to add a quick point; you would also know you have Root Access if the SuperUser application appears in your application drawer...

Glad I can make you chuckle... yes I did notice it and as far as its concerned does nothing on my phone that I see

If I remember correctly the first time I used superoneclick I had to download superuser from the market.

It doesn't "do" anything per-say, what it does is stores the names of programs which you have given superuser access (once you've done so)
The easiest way to test is (as stated above) to download some sort of ROOT app (root explorer, quick boot, etc.) and when you run them for the first time you should get a screen asking permission for the superuser access, once given this access it has read/write access to your system files (that's basically all root is).
You'll want to do a lot of reading on the forums before you attempt using any of these themes/mods/roms as you'll want a better understanding of the process before you get started.

Since you're rooted (and sounds that you're still on stock 2.2 framework) I would suggest getting the EA11 clockwork recovery installed (if you haven't)
then go over and flash the pick and pack EA11 rom (this is the stock 2.2 framework with all of the bloat programs removed, and i'ts deodexed so that you can then flash theme's over it to customize the appearance)
After you have pnp i would then flash the new EA11 Voodoo kernel (This is a system mod that changes the EXT storage system, which in turn speeds up the phone and saves a little battery life for being faster.) This will fix your hang problems (once you actually enable Voodoo lagfix through the recovery menu) instruction is all posted in threads on the forums here, refer to my newbie guide if needed (link in my signature.)
After that take a look at the EA11 themes you have to choose from, if you're interested in changing appearance.
Good luck!

[Q] some quick questions

i've looked around this forum for hours..there is a tooon of info on here and im just tired of trying to sort through this.
first off, i recently updated my captivate to froyo 2.2 and lost everything i had on my previous rooted 2.1. before i did the froyo update i made a complete backup with titanium backup. My question is, can I recover that back up on 2.2 if i reroot my phone and run titanium?
if so, whats the best way to root the captivate on froyo 2.2?
sorry for the noooob questions, but all the information on here is a little overwhelming. so i appreciate any information you guys can give me with as little flaming as possilbe
thanks
I think all ROMs (2.2) are rooted since they are all custom made by devs. just install titanium backup and restore
I dont see any superuser permissions (or whatever its called) in my app drawer. And when i try to run titanium backup it wont work

Did you load a rom or just flash 2.2? If you loaded a rom made by a dev it would be rooted. As far as getting your stuff back all you need to do is use a one click root and run tibu. Or find any 2.2 rom and flash through cwm and run tibu.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
I just flashed the leaked version of 2.2. Do you happen to have a link to the one click root for 2,2. I found a couple threads on here. Thanks in advance

You can try z4 root from the market or try that gunmans thread for one click root in the dev section. Im in my phone so its not easy to give links.

The easiest way to enable sideloading is to flash a new ROM. You can download all you need directly on the phone.
When I was using the stock ROM, I used android side loading wonder machine from android central.

I dont have a computer any more. So everything i try is going to have to be through phone. The link someone posted is for oneclick done on the computer. Which i dont have any more. Also if theres away to sideload without having to mess with roms. I like what i have and dont want to fart around with roms. So if rooting phone will let you sideload is there something on market i can dl? Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Other than flashing a ROM I don't know a way to enable sideloading directly on the phone. Rooting would definately be required if there is an app to do it. Rooting would not be required if it is done through an update.zip. Rooting itself will make no difference in sideloading.
If you are running stock FroYo you cannot do anything without a computer, update.zip's wont run on stock FroYo (3e recovery).
If you are going to flash a new recovery to enable using the update.zip method then you may as well flash a new ROM, its the same amount of work, and mostly the same steps.
If you like the stock experience give Cognition a try. Its what would have come on the phone originally if the Samsung developers were actual end users. Its fast, stable, and full of features like sideliading, root, tethering, and many more.
And if none of this makes sense ... don't do it. If you don't understand what you are doing you will have a paperweight instead of a phone. All the info is in the stickies, this section or development section.
Sent from my Captivate running FireFly
I understand about flashing. Well sorta lol but you need a computer to do all this with right? If i had my computer i wouldnt be on here because i use adb to sideload but sence comps down all i got is phone. This sucks. Going to have to see about vetting desktop up and running again i guess. O well thanks for the input.

What are you running on your phone?
If you are running stock 2.1, you may be able to do everything directly on your phone depending on if your phone will support 3 button combo. To test turn off your phone, then hold both volume buttons and power, when you see the third white att screen release the power button while still holding the volume keys. If you get a recovery menu, 3 button combo is supported, and you are good to go. You can download all you need to flash a ROM. Basically the clockworkmod update.zip and the ROM of your choosing.
If you can't get into recovery I think you need a computer to enable 3 button combo.
If you are running stock 2.2, you need a computer, period.

Root sidekick quick and easy. One click with recovery

Guys so i wanted to root my phone and
1) i just didnt have to patience to do all the work
2) i didnt get some stuff
3) and i wanted to do this quickly and effectively
i found this youtube video after like an hour of searching and it worked GREAT. [Video and end of post]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
pretty much the instructions are to:
Download the drivers first *NECESARRY*******IMPORTANT. this is one of the ke things cause without this is wont work in the beginning
*JUST A MENTION*
i tried doing this on my 64 bit system and it wasnt as easy when i did it on my 32 bit.
so it could have just been my comp.
just a heads up.
64 bit driver:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
32 bit.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
After that you're going to download this file:
http://tinyurl.com/Sidekick4GALLinOne
this is the file/folder whatever that will root your sidekick and add the CWM.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^REQUIRES WINRAR^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so to start rooting and the CWM
1) You're going to install the the driver that you download...64 bit or 32 bit etc.
2) after that you're going to set your phone to "USB DEBUGGING" when connect and ofcourse
connect your phone
after that your open up the folder thats called "sk4g root with good recovery"
3) ignore everything you see and just go straight to run.bat
4) click it and then wait, "Press any key to continue" press anything
5) let the thing run and you should be set at the end.
ENJOY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
your phone will reboot during the process and that is ok
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
if your doing this to install a new rom i recommend ayoteddy's GingerCloneV2. if great and has barly any glitches

This phone doesn't have much of a life left anymore anyway. Most people have already left. The phone was a great idea, just needed to have better specs and have a more open source. Right now its just on it's last breath. Kinda makes me sad, the keyboard was amazing. The doubleplays keyboard doesn't even compare. But I couldn't handle how slow a single core CPU is. Why? I rarely use it, and have only installed it a few times but don't usually keep it installed.
Honestly it's not necessary, but does let you easily install a custom recovery in some situations. For an S-OFF device there are much easier and more convenient ways to do so.
For the first few months we had the device there was no official recovery and ROM Manager was dangerous to use (not so anymore)

Press "flash recovery" and grant Superuser permissions. Not that hard.

Haha I didn't realize I was so far out of the loop! With my phones, I root to get access to system folders, system apps, and to run adfree. I don't flash ROMs at all and always keep stock ROM. Not only that - but i've noticed on the stock ROM every time I plug my phone into a computer without rebooting first it locks up and restarts - I have yet to have this happen on my ROM or any of the others I used before that.
Once you root the stock ROM, it just doesn't seem to work as well, and I had the restart issue before root was available for us with this device. At first I thought it was my computer doing it, but now with an older desktop in service it happens on that too, and other random computers I plug into that my friends own too...I dunno.
There is a lot to be said for running a custom ROM instead of the stock one, beyond all the little fixes and enhancements they bring.
...but, that's why we all work together here to constantly bring better software with more support for these devices all over XDA.

When is the last time you cleared cache and dalvik-cache? That might help with some of your issues.
I wrote a flashable-zip package that will do just that if you don't want to do it manually, it does a wipe (not format) so is compatible with all 3 clockworkmod recoveries we have available, since 4.0.0.8 and 4.0.0.9 don't implement the format command correctly.
Blue6IX said:
Third one is: Blue6IX_C01_Wipe.zip
MD5: a8c57de781b2abfca2dfcdcae57d439c
This one will wipe the /cache partition and also wipe dalvik-cache. Use this one if you are having problems with specific apps, especially when changing to a different version of an already installed app.

Either manually doing it or flashing my script might help with your issues, or might have no effect.
The next time you boot after doing so the machine will have to rebuild both cache and dalvik-cache, so it will take a little longer to boot that first time and after it's done and has sat for 5 minutes or so you should reboot the machine again before using it, just to get everything worked out right.
Hope it helps!

I have rooted and unlocked phone but when it reboots into recovery its not listing all the options that will allow me to flash cm 7 nor cm9. Any help to get past this hurdle would be great thanks

What does it say the recovery version is ?
The first would be recovery 3e no Sig and then I've tried the advice from an earlier post for the galaxy is9000 I do believe. I just dropped 3e and going to try again with simply the is9000

OK- you are not rooted- you can go to post 2 here and get root and red cwm recovery - thanks to qkster and Entropy

i thought that i might have been rooted since i can run diff rom managers, i do have super user access, titanium back up and a few others must have root apps. But i will try and thank you very much sir
If Titanium Backup asked for Superuser permission and you granted and TB did not say you are not rooted then you are correct, you are rooted. My answer still holds to go to post 2 to get the proper recovery.
Edit: + 10 on not using ROM Manager. (from Andros11 below)
Do not use Rom Manager. You can either flash Entropy's DD kernel to get red cwm recovery or look in the iset thread for gtg's guide for installing cwm, and use method 1 which requires you have the 3e modded recovery.

ok ok for sure thank you very much i was wondering what i was doing wrong so i will take it all back to stock and start from scratch on this one here. But one more question i feel like there is an instability in the os so this what really prompted me to root this phone. The usb works at times, it turns on when it wants, it turns off and locks freezes completely when it wants, to turn it on i have to remove the battery put it back in then when the battery shows i have to plug in to the usb port for the computer to get it to start. Overall i do not know what my friend did to his phone but it's a night mare. have you heard of this occuring with anybody else sir?
But i have managed to unlock and get free wifi hotspot out of it smh
I like your approach, however it sounds like the problems may be related more to:
a : power button may be sticking
b: may have issues with usb connection, either on phone or on computer or both.
Before you go any further, make a backup of the current rom on the phone if possible.
Understood, i will flash the new CWM, back up then progress forward on that note. As for the usb i've used several and the one i am using right now is not registering where it did yesterday, and it is like a females emotions very fickle in nature. I will play with it a lil bit more to see if i can download via usb if not i'll use the sd-ms card to pick up the files and move forward at that point. Thank you very much sir you have been a big !!
