I'm trying to replace an apk with a skinned apk, but I can't, because root explorer refuses to mount anything as r/w, only r/o. No matter how many times I press the button, or hold it, etc.
Anything I should try to fix?

Yeah, I was just coming to say I found that out, thanks!
i asked this question on another thread but figured i'd bring it here since it's more on topic with this one. i'm running stock 2.2 and trying to delete the FB app in order to replace it with a transparent widget. with root explorer i tryed erasing facebook.apk but was unsuccessful. i was directed to mount it as R/W. should i have mount options even tho my phone isn't rooted? i ask because i didn't have the option to change to r/w. i went ahead and searched xda and read a few different threads but didn't find anyone asked about not having the option. i also searched google and viewed a few youtube video's just to find out what they were describing to me (since i didn't see the option). i was going to reinstall the app but apon uninstalling was also refunded my $. i'm sure it may be a stupid question but i figured i'd ask it anyways since at the moment i don't seem to have any other use for root explorer. thnx.
Sorry I have to ask, you are rooted right?

Why buy root explorer if you aren't rooted...? And even though the mount options are there, it won't work
my original question (on another thread) was how do i uninstall FB running stock 2.2. the answer i received from a member was to use root explorer to delete it. being that i stated i was running stock 2.2 and i was instructed to use root explorer to delete it, i figured i didn't need to be rooted. ya i know it says "root" explorer...i also read a few comments in the app page (on the market) that stated "best file explorer weather rooted OR NOT". looks like i was wrong. either way thx for the help and the quik response
Lol I hear if you root your phone Root Explorer will work just fine

You can be running stock 2.2 and still be rooted - many people do this.

try this one.. taken from a zip in the first post on the following thread:

version 2.2.1 gmail.apk
You may need to push through ADB as it was taken from a flashable package.
Edit: I can confirm this works. Just installed it on my phone. Rebooted and got the "whats new" screen when first opening gmail. Also reply button is at the top along with all other changes.
To install, copy over to /system/app with root explorer or push through ADB with "adb push Gmail.apk /system/app"
Verified also working on other phones. Also, if you are on an odex'd rom, make sure you delete original .apk and .odex files.
works good on Fresh 3.1.0.1, thanks!
I am running BS 1.4 and I can't get it to work. I was an idiot and overwrote the original gmail.apk. Do yall have the original froyo gmail.apk.
Thanks ahead.
Never mind I got it to work and I love it.
Thanks superevilllama!!!
I can install the APK onto my phone but I wouldn't mind waiting for the official release of the app.
Does anyone know how it will become available? Is it through an OTA or will it be in the Market?

If I would have posted that, I probably would have searched the marketplace first to find out that no you cannot, at least not yet.
I think google may be moving everything towards being able to update individual gapps through the marketplace, but not quite yet. Plus I am not sure whether this has been officially released.
Can anyone explain how to install this via terminal emulator?
I've tried "cp" and I've tried "install" - always get the "File exists" error.

Try just cut and paste with root explorer and reboot. A whole lot easier.
Either way you have to mount /system/app as RW before it will let you modifiy it.

I have a Motorola Photon, and I had tried to get the old Market backet back with a process I found in the forum. It didn't work, and somewhere along the line I lost the Market all together. I tried wiping the phone back to factory and the Market app did not come back. I tried to just install a version from 4Shared, but still doesn't work with any version I install. It says that "com.android.vending has quit unexpectedly" and then it FC's. It only seems to do this when I go to download an app. I can browse and search fine with no problems, just no downloading!! I admit I'm a noob, and probably messed with something I shouldn't, but I figured this would be a nondestructive thing to learn on. Man was I wrong!! This sucks...please help me!!

Yes...I was rooted but no custom rom. I don't know how to do that yet. This is going to sound stupid, but what exactly is a custom rom? After I wiped to factory condition I tried to install a vending.apk from 4shared and that still gives me same error. I will uninstall again and try a market.apk now. Is that the same as vending.apk?
A factory reset will only delete user data, it won't put back something that has been removed. You need to get the vending apk for the version you want and instead of installing it normally put it in /system/app. You can do so using Root Explorer or another root level file explorer. If you don't have one installed, I can post the apk of a free one for you. Mount system as r/w and copy/paste the apk into /system/app, then set permissions to rw-r--r--, then reboot. You should have your market back up & running.

That's what I originally tried to do and didn't work, but I will try it again...If you could post an apk of the market you know is good that would be great. Can u post an apk of a root explorer also? I havent checked 4shared yet. Is there another free download service other than 4shared? Thanks for your help!!
Just download Market and install it. If it FC then check the permissions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1231290
(It's the new market btw. I know you don't want it, but you don't really have a choice at the moment)
Ok so this is weird!! I left the Market that wasn't working installed by mistake. I installed the OTA update that Motorola did, and then re-rooted my phone again. Now the Market is working for the most part!!! Only thing is...it FC's every time iot installs an app. It downloads and installs, but right after it installs it FC's!! It doesn't always close all the way...sometimes just goes to Market home screen. All the functionality seems to be working though, so I can deal with that.
Does anybody know why after the OTA update I can only get EDGE instead of 3G on a Rogers SIM card?
Did you clear Google Services Framework data and Market data?

Mount /system with r/w permission:
mount -o remount,rw -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
Then you'll be able to delete your system app
eg.: rm /system/app/Browser.apk
delete stock apps android
Install "Root App Remover" from the Market.

Thanx BazookaAce,XperienceD and Hanisa I thumbs u up
Root app remover removes only x programs for free, then you need to buy it.
The easiest method I found, was to download a root file manager program e.g. File expert.
Then mount system as R/W to be able to write to the directory ie. deleting files.
System apps is located in /system/apps.. start deleting.
Theres more pages online to check which apps to delete or more important, not to delete!
The apps on this tested safe and worked for me:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/10-2-final-lite-edition-made-by-you.4255/
Thanx csensitive! I have to do research since I dont know how to mount and use R\W Or maybe u just explained it...root file manager..

Did you go for File expert, which is free in market and has interface to mount R/W?
If you did:
1. Check the root option under settings to give it superuser rights
2. Mount R/W using Mount in the program interface
3. Press back until it says "if you press back again it closes sumthin) Here you are at the root of the phone.
4. Go to System and then app. Start deletin all the unuseful stuff.. delete the wrong stuff and you will break your system
No I went with Root Explorer, I really like the way it's laid out. I learned it well enough to change my boot animation a few times! Browsing through all the files a folders for a few days now. Also, leaned how to use Terminal Emulator. This stuff sure is fun! I found the folder that contains the info on the backlit keyboard and hardware buttons. I'm doing some research on how to get a code in there so I can control the brightness of those features. Could be out of my league though as I'm still too fresh to all this.
Its's not recommended to remove stock apps
I agree. If you delete the wrong ones you will end up,well, we all know the answer to that I've been using Titanium Backup to freeze the application first, but not before I find out what it is used for. I don't really want to say how much more responsive my phone is now,so I won't I would rather not jinx it!
Blue6lx made a rather exellent tutorial on what the apps are, and their applicable functions. Thanks so much to him!! That must have taken a long while to complete!
It is very thorough. I just saw it last night and am heading that way right now! Have a great day!
There's tons of stock apps thats not neccesary if you dont use them, ie. stock browser, sns client, samsung sync and so on. If you dont use the facebook app to sync, want another browser, dont use talk and so on, many of the apps just takes up space.
Many of them even run in startup as services/programs and uses RAM.
I removed about 30% of the stock apps, and could remove more if I wasnt afraid to break things
That's so true.
I deleted with success the following,
com.android.htcprofile
com.eamobile.bejeweled2_small
com.htc.android.netlogger
com.htc.socialnetwork.flickr
com.htc.Twitter3DWidget
com.netflix.mediaclient
com.tmobile.theme.Brooklyn 2.3.4
com.tmobile.theme.Retro 2.3.4
com.tmobile.theme.Spring 2.3.4
cw
Picasa Web Albums 3.0.3
Ringtone Trimmer 115132628.58088
Scribble 1.0.2115202467.62132
Slacker 2.1.196
T Mobile TV 4.3.1.43.144294
TrimIt 1.6.8.110525
Zinio Reader 2.03.3312
That's it so far, any of the above mentioned have been frozen first using Titanium Backup and after not seeing any ill effects, deleted thereafter.
I believe titanium backup also can delete em, and easy to backup first.
You are correct sir
thanks for this

The streaming part of TWC's app was just released. And of course, being the jerks that they are, it doesn't work on rooted devices.
Any workaround?
Don't tell me to clear data. It doesn't work.
Is there any way to run the app without root permission or to fool the app?
I offer a $10 donation to any Dev who can make this work.

I believe there are other apps that have been fooled, so I would hope this wouldn't be too hard to get around.
And there's a post on Droid Life that OTA Rootkeeper "and other apps" don't help...
I hate TWC. Everything they do I hate. The app is a great idea, they just shouldnt block users for taking control of their device. Just wait until a fix comes out, like FTW for ios.

Jclav,
How did you rename the Superuser.apk? I have tried to figure it out, but I can't. I am trying to get TWC TV to work on my Motorola Triumph that is rooted and I can't figure it out. Can you help me please?
Using root explorer go to the folder where the app is. Click the button at top that says Mount RW. It will then say Mount RO. Then long press the file. Click rename and name it. Then exit root explorer.
Oh how I hope this works on my Kindle Fire. I installed CM9 especially for the TWC live TV but was very disappointed when I couldn't use it.
I will try this tonight. Thanks

Isnt it a little risky changing the superuser?
Will that interfere with anything else that uses superuser by default?
nope.

This is correct. I'll have to find it when I get to work, but there is a thread around here that provides a set of deodexed apks. All you need to do is get the FM radio apk from that zip file, put it in /system/app, and change permissions to rw-r--r--. Worked for me.
--------------------------EDIT----------------------------
Apk can be found in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25636866&postcount=2
You don't need the Fm Radio Service apk, it's already on the phone.
(Rooted Stock 1.85)
You need root and you need to be deodexed. Full thread here:

Similar info to the previous response, just the thread specific to the FM radio mod.

You don't actually need to be deodexed if you just place the FM apk in system/app.
(I know that's what the instructions say, but I haven't deodexed and it works fine)

Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks for all help, but for some reason whenever I do root it doesnt work and it says permission denied and waiting for phone to reboot.
Need more details. What firmware version, and what root method?
I have the 1.85.502.3 att version, with root method one click root.
Whenever i try it and do the reboot thing if there is an error it always says waiting for phone to reboot and permission denied.
How many times have you tried? I know it sometimes takes several tries, and you have to set the clock on the phone a day or 2 ahead each time you try.
I haven't used the 1.85 root method myself (rooted back on 1.73). So you'll likely get more experienced help asking on the thread for that root method.
be sure usb debugging is on otherwise i'm pretty sure that the commands sent won't work on the phone, such as reboot, etc
Can you use this in plane mode?
Mine will not work unless I have data + wifi enabled.
nvm I just got it to work, I did it manually and got it rooted.
Thanks for help guys.

Depends on what app you are using to copy the files. On Root Explorer, there should be a button at to of the screen to mount the directory as R/W. ES File Explorer, I think you have to hit menu, than "mount as root" or something like that. Then copy the FM radio files, and long press on each file to change permissions.
I did all of that but it still doesn't work.
How do you get to mount as root. I transferred files over but it still doesn't work.

To mount the file system in ES go to settings and at the bottom you will need to click on root explorer then mount accept that then click on the option below it "Mount File System"
Side note: I did all the requested things and am still unable to install the HTC FM widget from the earlier posting. just says install failed or cannot install, something like that. But I am using CleanRom, maybe its not meant for that?? Not sure I even need the FM widget but I don't think CleanRom comes with a widget, just the icon.
