Thank You Devs Week! - General Topics

Thank You Devs Week.
Recently, I've been seeing lots of moaning around ROMs, and I wanted to do something that means we can all give something back to us.
Devs work very hard around the clock for us, and sometimes it's easy to just moan and moan about bugs, feature requests, or asking for ETAs.
So, this week, join us to celebrate all the hard work that devs do for us and THANK YOUR DEV!
What Can I Do?
We want you to get in touch with your dev, by Twitter, email or PM, and tell them why you love their ROM so much.
These are email addresses that devs have sent us so far so that you can thank them:
None yet hehe
Devs please email max(at)maxmarroni(dot)co(dot)uk if you have an email addy you want to add to this list. Make sure to include the device subforum so we know which post to add it to.
You can also tweet about the campaign to @thankyoudevs or #thankyoudevsweek
We need a logo!
If you're good with photoshop etc, we need a groovy logo and a graphic to go in people's signatures with something like 'I thanked My Dev!' in it. Email max(at)maxmarroni(dot)co(dot)uk if you're interested.
And Finally...
Thank you for supporting this campaign and I hope no devs get inundated with thousands of emails
Happy Thanking your Dev!

Do we have a money craving issue on xda?

I have wanted to adress a issue that has increased noticeably since I joined XDA-Dev, im not sure if anyone agree with me at all on this
But more and more of the developers here demands "donations" for their work, and that really sadden me. Because more and more ppl will feel that "hey, this guy and that guy actually makes money on their work, why cant I?" and in the end, this forums users will have to "donate" to everyone, and it will slowly suffocate from greed...
I know many use hours after hours, doing really amazing work creating, fixing modding and w/e. And I fully accept that ppl have a donation button in their signature, and that ppl can donate money as mutch as they want.
But when developers write that if you donate, I will continue my work, or if you donate I will provide you with support, or you can download my work if you pay for it, then xda has decreased to a point where I cant support it.
I joined here because I needed help, and I got it, for free. And I decided I want to contribute too, so I started learning, for free, what I now know. And I try my best to help out.
I have had many ppl telling me that they want to donate money for the work I have done making roms, etc (in herald section)
But I dont want any.
And I will make this promise: Im never gonna have a sig with donations, and I will never accept any form of donations for the work I do here. But I will respect that others have a "donation sig", but I will not accept and use stuff developed here that has a "you must donate me"
What make/made this forum great, is that so many have shared for free, amazing work.
Im not sure what the creators of this forums feel about this, or the current admins/moderators feels about this. But if you guys somewhat agree with me, please do something about it.
Im just a user, with my thoughts and views on things, and I dont know if anyone see it the same way as I do, or if this is actually a issue that should be adressed at all.
But maybe its just me and my thoughts that are wrong
cheers

where does anyone demand donations? devs ask yes, this is true in any dev community, if they say you MUST donate then that is wrong and against forum policy, so show me some examples

Allright. I was hoping that I didnt have to, because I dont wanna make anyone a "example" and I dont want to start a flamewar or a fight on who does it or not.
I think I need to say that the "demand" is often not written as a demand, but its usually adressed with please support me, and I will....insert "service provided" here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336234
Im NOT saying the poster of that thread is "guilty" of anything, and im sure that explanations could be provided and so on, but im adressing something that is increasing, atleast from my point of view. And Im gonna be the first to back down on what I "shed a little light on" if im mistaken in my interpetations.
But I do read alot around on the forum, and I just feel that more and more ppl wants donations for the work they do.
I will quote some general sigs, without saying who have them, and its not copied from anyones sig, but its a general "quote" of many diffrent sigs.
"if you like my work, and want more, donate"
"If you like what I do, buy me a beer"
"support my hard work by donating"
"Accepting any amount in donations"
"Incourage me to continue my work, buy me a beer"
list can go on with diffrent versons.
Im not against a donation system, but I really dont like it when you must donate to download anything, in my interpetation, that is as you say, against xda policy.
Is not developing for free, and so that we all can get more out of our devices encourage enough? If we want to make money on our work, why not start a company and start doing buisness on our own websites, and not use xda-dev to promote work we want to make money on?
sorry if I offend anyone, thats not my intention at all, and as I said, the post i linked to might be a bad example too. And I respect the hard work they do, and actually understand that they wants donations and all. Im really impressed by the work both the owner of the thread I use as example, and others. And that they deserve payment for what they do or not, is not the issue im forwarding here, so please have that in mind when commenting what I try to adress here.

To Donate or Not to Donate, THAT is the question...

All,
I have just received a question via PM and thought that it may best be answered here in the open forum. Mods, pls move thread if it would best be located in another forum. I have posted the original question and my reply... Any thoughts, extra comments or general discussion would be appreciated... The name of the sender has been removed for their privacy...

Hey, thanks for the great advice. I want to donate to some of the developers whose ROMS i have used, but i wasn't sure how much to give...i don't want to give too much, but also don't want to offend by giving too little. Also, i am curious at what point do you feel like u should donate...i didn't think just from trying a ROM i should feel obligated to donate, but if i have used it for a month or so or more than yeah, maybe kickin something down is the thing to do.
So, you think better way to get the keyboard problem addressed is post in the thread for the rom you want fixed, as opposed to creating a new thread asking specifically for it. See, i think some devices maybe don't have that problem (it's an ATT PTT thing?), and so some of the chefs and users aren't getting it...i THINK...or else it just surprises me how it doesn't bother more people more...i guesss maybe i actually use my phone to talk on more than some here

Donations are always a tricky item... I completely understand about the "not enough to much" dilemma... This is how I approach it: You are not purchasing anything, you are donating to a person that shares a common interest as you... To that end, think about a small favor that a friend of yours does for you... What type of thanks would you give that friend...? For my friends, I may buy them a couple beers... I think you see my point... Any donation, is appreciated... I would check on the conversion rate for where the recipient lives, so that they can get a decent donation... I don't think that 5 or 10 of whatever their native currency is, is to much... So, if I wanted to donate approx. 5GBP to someone, it would cost me 10USD... That is enough to buy almost 3 beers in the US, not sure about the UK ratio though... I think you also have a good handle on when you may wish to donate... a month may be a good time to donate to the cook... or however long you take to decide the rom is a keeper...
As for the keyboard fix, the comment should be posted in the thread of the rom where the problem exists... Some roms do not have the problem, it really depends on which base rom the cook used and whether or not they are even aware of the problem to begin with... There are many roms that have the fix already taken care of, and many that do not... It's really a hit or miss, when you find one that you like, you can always ask the cook to repost it with the correct dll cooked in, if you really like the rom, you can always let them know how much you appreciate their work and that a donation may be forthcoming...
Debonairone...
hmm
I'd say 10-15 USD is the right donation value and I feel that one should donate if they find that the ROM is perfect for their needs
If you were to donate, i'd say the minimum would be the cost of a pint of beer in your own currency.
a small way to say thanks online.
Moved to General subforum as this isn't really tied to a specific Rom or device.
FWIW, as someone who has both sent & received donations I think that the average is from $5 - $20 depending on what efforts you are supporting, how much value you feel you got from the efforts and finally how deep your pockets are. I've received a few donations that were much higher and it is always appreciated but nobody is trying to live off donations.
In the end it's really something that changes from user to user, project to project, and even month to month as your financial situation may change.

Not just ROMs but all Apps should be considered. There is a whole lot of great creativity in this forum.....
I have to say thnxs to those that shared their thoughts... Hopefully, someone has gained some insight as to how much they should donate, if they feel the urge to do so... I agree, as already stated, that shelling out the amount for a couple beers will always be appreciated, but as mentioned by Kyphur, your financial situation should be the final factor as to how much you want/can donate...
Thanks Debonairone
This was indeed very helpful!

Support your Developers!

I just want to take a little time to thank the Developers currently working on the MyTouch4G. Without out you guys we would be stuck with our stock phone and nothing to play around with!!! You guys make the android community!
First of all I would like to thanks kmobs for starting CM for our phone & Zinx for all his hard work in getting CyanogenMod working on our phones. I would also like to thank eViL D, Grankin01, Gr8gorilla, teamsilence.
Without these guys we would not have the rom's we have available for our phones.
If we want them to continue working on our phones and giving us these great rom's, and overlclock kernals we need to donate to them to keep them happy.
Come on guys just $5 is all it takes to show a developer that he is being thanked for the work he is doing.

[Q] Need developers

Here's the deal everybody. Obviously I'm in a pickle otherwise I wouldn't be on this site. Great forums by the way! I'm looking to build a team of developers. Where the heck do I find a few developers that would be willing to work together on possibly the most should-of-been-done-a-long-time-ago project ever?.. Now be for-warned, I'm looking for long term not short term devs. I need devs that will put their material on my website and get paid doing it. There's a lot more to what I'm doing here, and this is preliminary team building. Heck, XDA if you would like to get in on what I'm talking about shoot me an email! But otherwise, if your a dev out there and you are interested.... Let me know.
Thank you all,
Nathan
MOD EDIT: REMOVED EMAIL
You should probably give more of an idea what you're after. Freelance devs are often more like artists than just software factories.
If I wanted a mural on my wall, I wouldn't just post a message asking for "painters". I'd ask for people good at doing landscapes, portraits, abstract, or whatever sort of painting I had in mind.

Calling all newer APP DEVS and any pros who want to contribute.

Good day, Im a pretty green dev still learning code but doing it mostly from scratch with no formal training of any kind. I've joined a couple other DEVS on G+ and here to combine what we know and try to speed up the process for all of us. If your new to the APP devving game or a pro who wants to help the rest of us trying to get there let me know.
Going to start a specific user made forum here http://forum.xda-developers.com/group.php?groupid=740 for the group and one on G+ as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Have a good day.
