Epic 4G w/ Joeykrim's Root: What Works & What Doesnt - Epic 4G Android Development

So Joey helped me get persistant root this morning and I have been messing around with some root apps, and I thought I would share my findings so far:
OK, so here is what works so far:
AdFree Android (Free in Market)
Quick Boot (Free in Market)
Root Manager (Allows you remove sprint bloatware like Asphalt Demo, NFL, etc) (€1.99 in Market, approx $2.53 USD)
Shoot Me (Screenshot App) (Free in Market)
Root Explorer (£2.50 in Market, approx $3.88 USD)
CacheMate (Clears app cache) (Free In Market)
Titanium Backup** (Free in Market)
Here is what does not work:
Barnacle
android-wifi-tether
Personally, I cannot live without adfree, quickboot, and root manager.
**So I figured out Titanium backup does work, it was operator error. I just had to install Busybox.
From main app press "Problems ?" then press the button to download and install Busybox.
Here is a screenshot taken with Shootme. Notice the lack of the NASCAR app. Woot!

Awwww..... We gotta get Wireless tether going. Thats the app i cant live without lol

Woot! Its a start!
The apps need to be updated but that will happen in due time.
I love Adblock! Root Manager is my favorite system manager!

Can't wait for the custom ROMs to show up so we can ditch the Touchwiz crap and run bare Android Well done with the root joeykrim / noobnl, much props to you guys for getting it started ... the future is bright

I can live without titanium backup if i dont change to a new rom every week... but that's still a very important app for me.

Yes. This is just root, not a ROM.

Exactly. This could not break 4G, but just for laughs, I did fire it up just now. It works like a champ looking for a signal, ut sadly there is no 4G here where I live.

Great! I see that Root Explore now works. All I need now is Titanuium Backup and Wireless tether and I can reset my Moment to fix what I screwed up (lol)

I got Titanium backup to work. It was all operator error. I needed to install Busybox. I updated the first post.

Heck yeah.

Is this full root? Nand unlocked and stuff?
I'm guessing it must be because I couldnt uninstall stock apps until i fully rooted my evo...

Are u able to Use apps2sd?

It is not nand unlocked, but you can remove factory apps with root manager. Apps2sd I do not know about.

I will have mobileAP working on this before long

Apps2sd I do not know about.

patiently waiting but please hurry

I don't know if it's the combination of apps that caused it but it appears setcpu doesn't play nice with the epic. Superuser and the binary seem to be working. Google voice kinda works. When you go into settings while installing it, there's no menu selection to choose between sprint vmm or gv. So I just *38 then after it hung up I did *28xxxxxxxxxx for conditional call forwarding from my real number to my gv number. It's driving me crazy that they switched the menu with the home keys when compared to the evo. You better bet your a$$ I gave touch wizz the boot in favor of vanilla launcher.

Removing stuff out of /system/app doesn't work. After a reboot they come back. I tried removing flash cause I suspected it being a battery hog but it was no good after a reboot.

Open Home Deprecated

Ok so I have this installed on my phone and I have no clue what it is, never installed it nor can I find a way to uninstall it. Anyone else have it installed and if so did you find a way to delete/uninstall it?
It has the same thing in my downloads section of the market. The app doesn't show up in the app list under settings, though. It's really an annoyance and I think it is also causing the market to give me a false update notification. My boyfriend's phone does not have it installed and is not having any sort of the same issue with the market.
The only thing I think will clear it is a factory reset.
Update: I did a factory reset and before everything restored and I started using apps, it wasn't there. After I started using a few apps it was. No way to get rid of it until you reset the phone again. I don't know which app is causing it, but the few that I did open were task panel, eReader, and a word game. I removed them and reset. It has been quite a few hours after heavy use and it hasn't showed up in my downloads. I suspect one of those apps.
bump
this is really aggravating and many people dont even realize they have it on their phone. I have two nexus ones and its on both of them and on both phones i get the damn phantom application update notification. Has anyone figured out anything more about this? thank you
Where are you guys seeing it? I'm a pretty heavy app user, having installed/uninstalled quite a few, and haven't done any type of wipe; however, I'm not seeing what you're describing.

I believe the the old openhome app had the class name com.google.launcher2 this is same name that google have now used for the new launcher hence the market thinks its installed... which is isn't.
Has anyone tried to install open home & then uninstall? Maybe it will get rid of both...

Weird. I don't have that. You guys should use atrackdog to generate an installed alp list and compare them for commonalities.
Like all issues with this phone, I don't know if I'm supposed to contact HTC, google, or T-Mobile. Sound like a software issue so I'm guessing google?

I am not sure why you would need to guess in this case. It is neither a hardware or a plan problem. Google is your source for a solution. This is very likely dues to a previous installation of Open Home on an older android. As to why you can not uninstall it I can not answer, but at the least I do not have it in my installed software list.
Are you rooted? If so, you could go in and delete the apk from /data/app

Um, because Apps aren't vetted? com.google is just a java namespace it doesn't change anything or give you magic permissions.
Most likely openhome grew from someone starting with the launcher source and renaming it by adding "2" then tweaking it. The only bug here is that the market is looking for installed apps by "pname" whereas atrackdog doesn't.
Its a Market display bug guys, the app is _not_ on your phone.

Agreed, although I already left a market comment.
So I am not the only one. I have the bloody app on my phone too. I never installed it. It was there from day one and I can't remove it.

Market Autoupdate Bulk Toggle app is now on the Market! (v1.2.1 11/8)

We just released an app to the Market for rooted devices running Froyo that enables quick and easy toggling on and off of automatic updates for all of your installed Market apps (aside from system apps that update via the Market).
Search for "market autoupdate" on the Android Market and try it out now!
Let us know what you think of it. Some people mentioned they would be interested to see widget support for this. If enough people want a widget, we'll consider adding widget support to this app!
v1.1 adds a progress spinner and has some internal changes.
v1.1.1 fixes a crash that occurs when trying to click the same button twice. It also fixes an issue that caused the app not to work on high memory devices.
v1.2 fixes a problem where the app would not work on devices without a sqlite3 binary (which includes most rooted stock ROMs that I didn't account for).
v1.2.1 adds a new icon.

Sorry, but my app is not to blame.
See this post.
so dose this turn on/off autoupdate feature? will you still see updates? im also curious about the update all feature, is that disabled?
Awesome work, defo will be useful. Wish I'd had it a month ago then I'd be £30 better off due to roaming auto update fun times
hi,
good work man!
only a question (not a bug)
is possible to make a option in your program to enable autoupdate
in / data applications and to disable for / system applications?
Great app!
It would be great if it could be integrated with Tasker.

EXACTLY what I just logged in to say! I'd love to be able to automatically turn off market autoupdates when I'm not connected to wifi (there's no way I'd remember to manually turn it on and off all the time!), but I imagine there needs to be some additional functionality built into this app first to allow interaction via Tasker?
Hi eddieringle,
really nice app ! A must have tool !
But one request: can you make a version that can disable auto-update for all apps including sys-apps ?

We're still looking into why it doesn't work on system applications. When we figure that out, we'll update the application right away.
On another note, 1.2 includes it's own sqlite3 binary, so most of the people who had trouble getting it working should find that it works for them now.
Awesome. Thanks! I was looking for something like this =]
Personally, I'd rather see a list of installed apps with a checkbox indicating Autoupdate status so I can quickly run down my list of apps (perhaps with a tab separating system from installed apps) and check/uncheck Autoupdate for each one. Currently, you have to go into each app separately to do this, which is a major pain... Hope this can be considered for a future update?
I went to slide me and it download but wouldn't install and I try to download it in the Android Market, it download but it say "installation error unknown reason - 18" so I can't install... any help? I'm using an Evo rooted with Clockwork recovery.

Great app!!! It would be nice to be able to choose what to update though, all in 1 simple list, just as it was previously mentioned. Also, the ability to turn off auto-updating when roaming would be useful too (however I do have my phone set to disable data altogether when I'm roaming, it might be useful for others).
keep up the great work!
Wonderful little app, thanks!
Doesn't it work on Android 2.1?
Thanks for your app

One big problem, if you uninstall it and reboot, can't connect to wifi anymore.
It only says error next to wifi in settings. As soon as I reinstall the app and restore wifi passwords, it's back to normal.
Edit: I tried wiping dalvak cache, cache, reset settings, but didn't work.

How can I test?
After restoring passwords, program breaks Wi-Fi, then Wi-Fi in the system fails to start, it says Unable to Scan for Networks. If you delete a program Wi-Fi does not work. To launch Wi-Fi you need always use Super Wifi Password Backup and press Restore WiFi Keys button.
Suggestion for new features:
-Restore specific passwords
-Change priority of the networks.
If you want help pm me.

[App] Root Call Blocker needs testers

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app's home is here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
We have had multiple reports that blocking is not working sometimes on the American sammy phones, so we need some nice people to do some testing.
You can use the Groups function of the Lite version to do the testing - it gives you almost everything youd want from the app anyway.
Please post comments here, but also use the "Write to us" dialog in settings.
This is great, my bug with calls comng through sometimes when call waiting with more than 1 number was fixed in 165! Thanks a lot!
Enjoy... and remember, an update is always just around the corner!
Could you guys please test the following behavior for me:
1. How the app behaves when a blocked number attempts to connect during call waiting
2. How a blocked caller is handled when "Dont answer" is set as the reject method and you are currently on the phone and have not enabled blocked call vibrate notifications within the app itself
Dont forget to send logs with descriptions as well.
Come on people, i really need some feedback on this!
Come on guys - feedback will help me help you!
Awesome, working perfectly here thanks. Dont thing ive ever had issues with this app (maybe once had to do a manual license check)...
Thanks, could you please test the behavior i described above? Its very important!
Guys, an update has been rolled out. It contains an important new workaround thast needs to be tested.
It may help those people who have data issues, especially on LTE enabled phones sometimes.
Please help me test this by installing the app, rebooting and waiting for data to return with the screen on. Please wait 3 minutes at least before sending logs via "Write to developer" in the app.
Dont forget to include a description. Thanks!
Working perfectly for me! Thanks, this is absolutely top class. Ive been using CM as well, great app too.
Enjoy. And dont forget that im always checking these threads, ao comments and suggestions are welcome!
Any issues to report?
Maybe found a bug... just maybe
This actually sort of saved my a$$ so not sure if I should list it as a bug or not LOL anyways I'm using Miui on a HTC Desire Z and I loaded my root blocker pro and added a password and put it in hidden mode. I always back up my blocking settings so I forgot how to load root blocker pro when it's hidden, so I went into the settings into manage applications, then I uninstalled root call blocker and re-installed it and said no to the restore, got into the setting and restored manually. Could be a security flaw, what do you think?
There is no way to prevent this other than taking your sd card out. Its an android flaw.
Yes, its a problem with android itself!
Any issues to report?
Not sure if it the app or not. I have an evo shift. Im using the free version and ever since i installed rcb i lose all service sometimes, data and phone. A reboot fixes it. Like i said i never had this problem before i installed rcb. On a lighter note it works great awesome app! I will be buying when i figure out if it rcb or not

RCB will only interfere with data at first run, so it isnt the app. Bad radio, bad signal, pretty much lots of possible reasons...
Ok, i did find that it is blocking all picture mail(mms). Is there a setting to fix it?

Apps not showing up in Market

ROM: CyanogenMod 7.1.0.1
Kernel: faux123 0.4.2 OC
Market: 3.1.5
I've seen this in several threads, but still haven't found a definite solution. Market will only show a handful of my 200+ applications. Running Market Doctor from Titanium Backup doesn't help. Fixing permissions in ROM Manager doesn't help. The only thing that brings my applications back is clearing the data for the Market app. At that point, I go into Market, agree to their terms and conditions, see all my apps, select to install all updates and these run fine. The next time I go into Market, I only see a few again. Sometimes, I am presented with the dialog to agree to their terms and conditions again.
This only started happening a few weeks ago and it's very annoying. I was hoping someone has found a solution to this problem by now, since it has been reported since the early days of the new Market.
Try "Eris Market Fix" available in the market. It has worked for me and many others. It was designed for the Droid Eris but works great on the G2x.

Sorry partner. That's all I got. Someone passed it on to me and it has worked every time when installing new roms and restoring from TI. I used it yesterday when upgrading to Weapon G2x. I guess it could be rom dependent. I know little about the deep dark secrets of android. I just try to pass on things that I have picked up here and there.

Update. This seems to have solved the problem! I went to Settings>Applications>All>Market, cleared cache, cleared data and uninstalled updates (effectively bringing me back to Market v1), rebooted, installed Market 3.1.3 (google for APK) and I was able to see all my apps. I rebooted the phone, went back in and they were all there still. Thanks a lot for your suggestion!
I've noticed using a lower DPI would cause the market to misread your phone and leave put apps. They may have fixed this since I've tested but maybe not.
