I have quick question about rooting this phone I used to have mytouch 3g I had rooted back in day. I was thinking about rooting it for superuser etc but I dont want to run custom roms atm. With Clockwork mod will it still t-mobile OTA update without problems or can the root/clockwork mod interfere and cause problems?
Thanks for the info

That doesn't answer the question, you can root without installing Clockwork Recovery. Use SuperBoot method by paulobrien.

I un-rooted because I had no need for custom recovery as I have no plans to flash a custom ROM, so if I use SuperBoot, I will be able to receive the OTA updates without a hitch from Google, correct?
Sorry for posting in wrong section, Anyways I went through did all the research and here is all the information you need to do it. Also thanks zephiK for the reply that kinda got me on the right track with everything.
[GUIDE] Android Sdk with fastboot, adb and usb drivers
[GUIDE] Unlock/Lock Nexus S Bootloader
[HACK] 23/Dec GRH78: Superboot - rooting the Nexus S
I didnt want to take chance on bad file for the .bat file so if you dont have MD5 checker here is one for firefox.
So to recap... This method will get your Nexsus S rooted, and keep your stock 2.3.1 rom with no modification to the recovery.
...Enjoy...
So just to confirm, this setup will still prompt the OTA update correct? If I accept it I would have to reroot the phone correct?

as long as you keep your stock ROM it will prompt you,
the custom roms have the portion that calls back to the mothership removed

Thanks man, appreciate the reply.
It will prompt you but will more than likely fail to install.

So the evo is supposed to get an ota update to gingerbread today! how exciting!
just wanted to know if my phone is rooted do i need to unroot in order to receive the update from sprint? or do I at least have to be on the shipped rom?
Thanks!
I don't have firsthand experience with OTA updates as I've used CM since I got my EVO but I've heard over and over again that you need to unroot. I'm not sure what will happen if you dont, but hopefully you would just lose root. Good luck! There is a flashable stock gingerbread with root in the evo dev forum.

If you want the sprint update You HAVE to unroot this will also remove your recovery
then find the stock rom
rename it PC36IMG
Go into bootloader down volume button and power then let it scan it will find the pc36img then it will ask if you want to update put yes let it do its thing when your done you should have unrooted stock rom then just install the sprint update and your good to go.
Any questions just ask.

Thanks! I've rooted and unrooted a couple of times already, I was just wondering what happens if I update while I'm still rooted? do I just lose root (which I anyways do) or anything else will happen?

Hello Everyone,
I'm fairly new to rooting phones and ROMs so if this question dosn't make sense please destroy my inner child I have a rooted sgs3 using odin and factory verizon build but the problem I am having is with ClockwordMod I think. The samsung update restarts the phone but ClockworkMod starts up right away and won't let the update go through. Is there a setting I need to change to allow all updates to bypass ClockworkMod or is there another way for me to get the update?
Any help is much appreciated.
Justin
Sounds to me like cwm just saved you from an auto ota update.
I use twrp so i dont know the answer to your question but if you're rooted, why would you want an ota?

Hello and thank you for the reply. I'm not sure that I need/want it though it continues to ask me to update so it's either keep saying defer or just let it update.
Of you download and flash one of the latest and greatest roms, you wont get asked to update. There is a way you can stop the ota but i dont remember off the top of my head. Im sure google knows. I would just flash a newer rom that includes the update.
hmmmm

What would you say is the latest and greatest ROM and can I use odin to flash it? Also, if I flash a new ROM I lose everything that is on my phone right??

It is going to keep rebooting into CWM if you don't tell it to until you tell it to stop rebooting to recovery, which is an option in the menu system after flashing. If the OTA update installation is being intercepted by CWM's presence on your phone, then I'm not sure if there is a way around it other than flashing a ROM. Someone with more experience will have to chime in.
With that said, should you choose to install a new ROM, there are a plethora of ROM options on XDA, at least some of which have OTA updates disabled. See the following link for a guide (I'm assuming you are on Verizon):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32079760#post32079760
You can flash the stock, rooted ROM back on with ODIN, and then download EZ-Recovery (which has CWM) and load a custom ROM that way.
I use aokp but jellywiz is a nice stock like rom. Just download a rom and flash in cwm.

If you want the update you should flash back to stock and restore the stock recovery. You can reroot and unlock the boot loader after you update.
Im having same issue. Verizion trying to force my phone to have less features. I was able to ignore it 2 weeks ago but now it keeps trying to force the update and I can keep delaying it. Any good tools you all know of to just block ota updates all together? Pretty happy with stock rom as is no need to fix it minus the copy and paste bug.
You can use Titanium Backup to freeze SDM 1.0 and the update will quit downloading. I'm not sure if freezing apps is supported in the free version but the paid version is well worth it of you plan on switching ROMs.
You could also flash Scotts stock rooted Rom with the latest update, then your phone status will say up to date. I flashed the zip right on my phone through cwm but I'm sure you can use Odin too

I was in the exact same situation as you. The phone will not update with Clockwork Recovery installed. I simply flashed back to the stock ROM via ODIN (stock.vzw_root66 which a quick search should locate), accepted the OTA update, and then used the beginner's guide in the Android Development forum to get back root.
I use Titanium Backup to freeze SDM 1.0. Like JBO1018 wrote, the PRO version is well worth the price, if only to freeze bloatware. Everything else it offers is gravy.

Tried Noxious Ninja's method from here, but no longer working for me after the VRALHE update. Looking at the original thread, it looks like someone did get it to work, though.

Whether it still works or not I don't know. If it doesn't will have to wait for new exploit. This is why if you want to root and unlock you should NEVER take an OTA. You will eventually catch one that leaves you stuck on stock indefinitely until another exploit is found. EVO 4G LTE has already been locked back down with an OTA. All the releases are available as rooted rom and when firmware update is available the devs will modify it to make safe to flash. If you find yourself locked down only option I know of is to send it to Josh and spend the $60 to have it JTAGed back to older firmware.

1. [ROOT][TOOL][VRALHD][VRALG7] SuperSU Root w/ Out Flashing worked perfectly to root the latest VRALHE OTA update.
2. VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader) Version 1.2 worked perfectly to unlock the bootloader on the latest VRALHE OTA update.
3. EZ-Recovery for VZW Galaxy S3 Version 2.2 worked perfectly to flash TWRP recovery on the latest VRALHE OTA update.

Just so Im 100% sure before I do something I'll regret, if I accept the OTA update that was released a couple of weeks ago (?) I will still be able to root and unlock my phone later correct?
Ive been deferring the update for a while now and while I dont mind continuing to do that, I wouldnt mind not doing that as well.
I havent rooted or unlocked my phone yet so Im still running the same software that the phone came with way back in July.
Also, does this update alter the way Google searches? I vaguely remember Google losing a lawsuit regarding the way the search bar searches everything on the phone + the internet, but it may be much too soon for that to have any effect on current software.
So far can still root and unlock. Never know what the next one will bring. And yes Google Search was handicapped 2 or 3 updates ago.
i'm having trouble installing my update. i locked my bootloader via ez unlock, and flashed bkac to the stock recovery via ez recovery.
i ran the OTA update, downloaded fine, but when it installs, it fails half way during the install? anyone know what i'm doing wrong?
i'm rooted via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 , and i have google wallet installed.
do i need to unroot and uninstall wallet inorder for this update to install?

The update will not install with Google Wallet installed. If you have a nandroid without it, you can revert back to that and update with no worries.

I flashed back to stock via Odin. From what I understand the phone has to be completely stock to except and complete ota, so that means wallet is a no go.
Like I said flashed back to stock, took the update went through fine rerooted using noxious ninja and unlocked via ez:thumbup: unlock 1.2

I generally don't root my phones but I needed to increase the size of my SD cache so I rooted it.
I have read the threads on what to do if you have rooted and installed a new rom but I only did a portion of this process.
To root the phone, I followed the guide on this forum and completed the following:
Enabled USB Debugging and Unknown Sources (Phone)
Double-clicked "RootDebugfs" on PC with phone connected to computer using OEM USB cable. It ran to completion.
Installed - ez_unlock.apk and rom_manager.apk
At this point SuperUser was supposed to install but it didn't. I downloaded and installed Superuser, updated the Superuser binaries, and I was rooted. I confirmed this with Root Checker.
I never unlocked the phone with Ez-Unlocker
I never used Rom-Manager either.
I did install SD Speed Increase and increased the SD cache size from 128kb to 1024 kb.
Now there is a Verizon update that I should probably get. In the near future I will need to update to Jelly Bean.
What do I need to do to install these Verizon updates?
If you're rooted, stock recovery and not unlocked you can take any OTA but it will break root. But as far as I've seen you can root again.
If you're unlocked with custom recovery you need to flash back to full locked stock and stock recovery to accept OTA.

You could also just wait until someone creates a flashable zip and flash through CWM or TWRP.
Thank you for the replies.
I did not change anything regarding recovery. I only did whats indicated in my initial post.
If I do the OTA update will I just root again using the same process I did initially?
If so, is that just "double-click "RootDebugfs" on PC with phone connected to computer using OEM USB cable and run it to completion."?
I appreciate the support provided and appreciate all responses.

Just be aware that it's not unheard of for the root exploit to get blocked in the new OTA. It doesn't sound like that has happened here, but just FYI. That's part of why the common mantra is to just wait for someone to post a rooted version of the stock rom... or go with a custom rom (shout out to CleanRom here).

Thanks a lot for the information. I'm sure I can handle that. I'm considering not doing the update and then either waiting for the Verizon update to Jelly Bean or find a Jelly Bean ROM and take that route.
Thanks again.
