It's a Nexus, you can always root.

So I can root with the current root method with no problems?

Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.

Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)

ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.

Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here

I've seen many different rooting methods for the nexus s but unfortunately they don't allow rooting without unlocking the bootloader like the samsung vibrant allows is there anyway I can root my phone without unlocking the bootloader?
why I don't want to unloack the boot loader because I'm fine with the stock ROM on my nexus s. I was really into installing ROMs and things with my Vibrant but the Nexus S feels really complete so I feel like I don't need to unlock my boot loader
Also for the first time I have decent signal in my house after switiching from my blackberry to android so I don't wanna change my baseband and my battery life is good too so I don't want to mess with the kernel

You know you can re-lock the bootloader with a fastboot command, right? And the little open lock goes away.

i just have one question i can relock right but if i do unlock the bootloader will it change my kernel or baseband settings? i really couldn't care about the warranty and such

Yes you can use Odin with Nexus S, but consider it the last resort because normally you can do everything via adb and fastboot -- that's the advantage of having a Google phone.
For OTA updates, I'm pretty sure it will not work because OTA update requires stock recovery but rooting requires you to flash a custom recovery.

[HOW TO] Root Atrix 2 running on Android GB(2.3.6) / ICS(4.0.4).

This is a method to root Atrix 2 running on Android GB(2.3.6) / ICS(4.0.4).​
EDIT: Last updated on 26th July 2012
WHAT WORKS: Everything including the setting inside superuser which was not working in superuser 3.1
If you use this MOD, then please click on thanks button below.
I have updated this method to latest version of superuser 3.1.3 and su binary 3.1.1 for better compatibility with various Apps.
By following the below instructions you will be rooted in no time. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Features added in superuser 3.1.3:
1.Temp unroot
2. Ota survival
3. Outdated binary Notification
Method:
1. Enable "USB debugging" in your phone settings
2. Download the attachment Named "Motofail Root (superuser 3.1.3, su binary 3.1.1).zip" to root Android GB(2.3.6)
or Attachment named "ICS_root(superuser 3.1.3 and su binary 3.1.1) .zip" to root Android ICS (4.0.4).
3. Uninstall your old Motorola drivers from PC and install these new drivers.
4. Connect your phone with original USB cable that came with your phone.
5. To root Android GB(2.3.6) click on "Click-To-Root.bat" in the attachment folder or
To root Android ICS(4.0.4) click on "Root.bat" in the attachment folder
6.Your phone will reboot 2-3 times don't remove the USB cable during this process
NOTE: If you are unable to Root even after following the above MOD then perform a Factory restore after OTA update and retry.

I haven't been having problems, but I always have been using the older motofail exploit then updating the binary from within the app.

I had the issue the other day, on stock 2.3.6, I also saw that alterdlikeness had a similar issue as well. It was updating past the 3.03 on both su and Superuser.
I had issues on my A2 with 3.1 only, and it would just FC and not work. I had to remove and basically re-root, and leave it at 3.0.1.

hmm. good to know in case it ever happens to me. I guess I will know I am not alone.

I don't know about other variants but it is working on ATT ROM and I have also assisted the same method to one user in India on androidcentral who was on MEART ROM and it even worked for him.

You missed the point I was trying to make to those wanting to update thier binaries for su and superuser.... not new root exploits.
I just want everyone to know there are issues with 3.1... however today an update to 3.1.2 today has been proven to work for those having the issues that both alteredlikness and I have seen with FCs.

On Stock 2.3.6 rooted. The new updates to the Superuser app allow you to update the binary and use the settings now.

This method works as stated today I was trying to update my su binary but update was not getting successful so I unrooted and rooted back using this method now everything is updated and running smoothly.

About to root my girlfriends phone to eventually install Lithium.
Coming from a AT&T Galaxy S2 so things are a bit different here.

After that what steps do I need to take to get CWM installed so I can backup and install a new ROM?

I think they are the same, except this one has a more updated version of superuser - I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I personally have always used the one in Jimmy's thread and just update the superuser app and binary (and, thanks for reminding me about that post - I never thanked him until today - and due credit to p3droid & JRW 28 of course).
As for CWM recovery, just install the A2 Bootstrap app after being rooted. Use the bootstrap app - top button, OK, bottom button to boot into recovery.

Boom, was one setup ahead of you and just finished all that. Currently backing up in CWM and waiting for a painfully slow download of Lithium and we should be jammin. Can't believe how easy it all was actually.
So I assume since this CWM is loaded from an app there's no way to boot into recovery should a bootloop or rom failure happen? Is that something people worry about?

The cwm on boot feature may already be included in Lithium (edit: yes, it it included - just checked)... if not, you can set that up rather painlessly. And, yes, some of us do worry about that very much so..

Are you on the ICS leak already? Are you on AT&T? If you are on the ICS leak and on AT&T there is a way to root it in the leak thread in the General section. I put the files back up today.
If not, I really am not sure, one of the guys on the other leaks might be able to help there.

[Q] Help returning to stock recovery

Hi Guys,
I know this may be frustrating for some of you, but as a complete beginner in using Android, I was wondering whether someone could help me out here. I have tried searching various forums, but my knowledge of androids is limited. I used the tutorial from Rootwiki to successfully unlock my bootloader, install TWRP recovery and root my phone
Does this mean I am not using a stock rom?
Now I sort of regret deciding to do this and would like to return to stock so that I can get any OTA updates without further tampering with my phone. Unfortunately while following the above tutorial, I only made a backup after TWRP was installed and not before, so I need help in going back please.
I can see that there are a few people in my position, so I'm sure others will benefit from this as well.
My software details are:
Android version - 4.2.2.
Software number - 1.33.206.1
HTC SDK API level - 5.41
Network - o2 uk
Can I use any stock recovery file or does it have to be specific to the above?
Can you please provide a step by step guide with a list of files that I will need to download?
or can I simply just factory reset my phone, and everything goes back to normal? I don't mind having to re install apps etc?

i have a HTC One mini 4.3 and i am in the exact same situation. i like to get stock recovery but those ive tried hasent been working.

If you didint flash a rom after you installed your recovery, the back up you made is then of stock os
Maybe if you take the ota, it will cancel out ur root and five you stock recovery back, i havent browsed these forums.. Try searching for a RUU and stock recovery, the phone is fairly new, so can take time for someone to put something together

Ok guys, I got the notification for the OTA update today, I have downloaded it but haven't installed it. From a different thread, I found a link for a stock recovery which is about 9.5mb from androidfile host (/?fid=23252070760975668)
can I just flash this recovery and proceed with the update? or will there be compatibility issues with the version I have above?

not yet, but MirageBlader has been quite helpful and has said the following in a private message to me, which I have yet to try:
"Very easy mate, open your ota and flash the stock recovery from the ota. You can only install it with stock Rom, stock boot and stock recovery. Your bootloader musst be locked and your phone unrooted. s-off is not needed if you already got the ota"

I'd be very interested to know the results of your attempt to go back to "stock".
Can I ask if you are doing this just to get the 4.3 update? Also, do you plan to root and customise your ROM after the update, or leave it stock?

If your phone isn't rooted, what exactly is the issue? Do you have a custom recovery installed, and is your bootloader unlocked? If you are looking to upgrade, did you get the OTA download on your phone?

Hi nelvinchi I am trying to get back to android ver 4.2, I have a stock mini it's not been rooted or mod'd in any way. Just had the 4.3 ota that was update automatically just woke up and my phone had updated looking at settings it was set to auto update and install when on charge Grr dam phone so many probs with this ota

Yep, just doing it for the update, I only rooted my phone in the first place to get rid of bloatware, which i realised is a lot more complicated than just rooting, and all the other benefits of rooting don't really appeal to me, or are too much hassle for a beginner such as myself.
Just need to figure out how to unroot and relock my bootloader before I can go ahead with this :s

If you have SuperSU installed on your phone, the app has a settings option called "Full unroot" - this will get rid of root. Relocking your bootloader - there are various methods, you could try HTCDEV site (probably how you unlocked originally), or the revone option which will lock the bootloader and remove the "tampered" label. Try a search, but if you are unsure, jusk ask!

Got everything sorted with the great help of Nelvin. I had previously gone to the twrp support IRC and after answering a few questions, they just stopped talking... Glad there are people out there still willing to help! He spent a good hour or so with me making sure everything was working.

If you are rooted then you more than likely have supersu already installed. Check your app drawer.I rooted using HTC DEV and supersu was flashed to the phone with twrp as part of the process

Can I make a suggestion? Given where you are with your phone currently, It would be much simpler, and virtually risk free, to flash tr1gg3r's Stock Sense 5.5 4.3 rooted deodexed rom from the One Mini Android Development forum.
You will get the 4.3 update, and have a fast and very stable ROM. All future updates will be incorporated into a newer ROM version.
Returning to "stock" carries FAR more risk - and you'll never have true stock because it isn't possible. Soon as the bootloader is unlocked, your phone is tampered, and no tool or utility can change that (other than cosmetically!)
It's your choice obviously, but if I was you, I'd stay rooted and enjoy the benefits it brings!
If you still want to try to go back to stock, I'll help..... But I've now helped three members get out of a soft brick after they attempted to go stock.......

Root lost after 4.4.4 OTA update?

Hi, i updated to 4.4.3 via ota update. After that i tried to open SuperSU and it says 'There is no SU binary instanned and superSU cannot install it.'
Did i lost root? Do i need to start from the beggining ?
I was trying to flash Franco Kernel and i realized that there is a problem after i tried to enter recovery mode. My device failed to enter recovery mode showing me a dead android with a red exclamation mark.

1) the dead android is stock android recovery
2) yes you lost root
solution: reflash a custom recovery in fastboot and then flash the supersu zip and you're done.
there are a ton of threads about this issue and how to solve it all over the place. please search next time.

I previously rooted my Nexus 5, 4.4.2 using adb and Fastboot, but my question is which image do I use for TWRP and 4.4.3? Is 4.4.3 still called hammerhead or something else? Those names are confusing to non experts and flashing the wrong img can brick the phone.
Which TWRP recovery image do I use?
Which Supersu do I use?
And where do I find them?

The device is hammerhead. The latest official twrp is fine and same with super su. Don't use tool kits that way you know what to do when something like this happens.
This will take you start to finish you were rooted so im assuming your bootloader is unlocked and you can start with flashing recovery image just be sure to read it all .

Of course you lost root, that's normal. For twrp go to goo.im. for super su Google chainfire supersu xda. Very simple, very easy

Got this puppy in the mail today and fastboot unlocked the BL before I even saw a start screen. Took 4.4.3 then fastboot flashed TWRP. Installed SuperSU in recovery.
Boom! Rooted, unlocked and updated.

If you (and you will) loose root after installing the zip for 4.4.4 go to http://download.chainfire.eu/446/SuperSU/ and download the zip. use recovery to install.

this is exactly tbe same as the very first android update ever in 2008.. if you update via ota or stock manually, YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. stock rom is not rooted by default. you can not expect to have root when updating stock! this is just silly people. the simplest search on google brings you years, yes years, of the same exact question being asked thousands of times over.. and yes, you will also lose your custom recovery.

this is exactly tbe same as the very first android update ever in 2008.. if you update via ota or stock manually, YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. stock rom is not rooted by default. you can not expect to have root when updating stock! this is just silly people. the simplest search on google brings you years, yes years, of the same exact question being asked thousands of times over.. and yes, you will also lose your custom recovery.

It's like people are completely baffled at this when it literally happens with every freaking update...

Just use wugs nexus tool I lost root and fixed it with the root option. No messing just a few clicks its idiot proof

Yes, but it also makes you look like an idiot when you post on here complaining something doesn't work because of use of a toolkit.
Rooting is just flashing a custom recovery then flashing SuperSU. If you need a toolkit to assist with something as simple as that then I suggest you revert back to stock factory images and stay away from anything regarding "root".

Yep, I'm surprised people still ask this question. If you know how to flash an OTA, you should know what happens after. On a side note, when I flashed the 4.4.3 OTA, I actually didn't lose the TWRP. I just used the OTA from the OTA thread. I just thought it strange.

Not true i have used it thousands of others have without a problem, i could say people have bricked their phone with fastboot NOTHING is 100% safe....

ok, i dont know what youre talking about but ill bite.. show me one person thats bricked their phone with fastboot.

I cant show you i can only tell you what ive read on these very forums for whatever reason ppl have reported on xda that their phones have bootlooped and bricked, it my have been user error on commands or glitches i dont know,and all i was saying about Nexus root toolkit is that i have used it many times without a problem as have other ppl but im sure that some ppl have come unstuck but for me its been fine....

I've never had a problem using root kits. I also know how to do it other ways. But some idiots like to do it root kit ways.
