[Q] Samsung Update stopped by ClockworkMod - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello Everyone,
I'm fairly new to rooting phones and ROMs so if this question dosn't make sense please destroy my inner child I have a rooted sgs3 using odin and factory verizon build but the problem I am having is with ClockwordMod I think. The samsung update restarts the phone but ClockworkMod starts up right away and won't let the update go through. Is there a setting I need to change to allow all updates to bypass ClockworkMod or is there another way for me to get the update?
Any help is much appreciated.
Justin

Sounds to me like cwm just saved you from an auto ota update.
I use twrp so i dont know the answer to your question but if you're rooted, why would you want an ota?

Hello and thank you for the reply. I'm not sure that I need/want it though it continues to ask me to update so it's either keep saying defer or just let it update.

Of you download and flash one of the latest and greatest roms, you wont get asked to update. There is a way you can stop the ota but i dont remember off the top of my head. Im sure google knows. I would just flash a newer rom that includes the update.

What would you say is the latest and greatest ROM and can I use odin to flash it? Also, if I flash a new ROM I lose everything that is on my phone right??

It is going to keep rebooting into CWM if you don't tell it to until you tell it to stop rebooting to recovery, which is an option in the menu system after flashing. If the OTA update installation is being intercepted by CWM's presence on your phone, then I'm not sure if there is a way around it other than flashing a ROM. Someone with more experience will have to chime in.
With that said, should you choose to install a new ROM, there are a plethora of ROM options on XDA, at least some of which have OTA updates disabled. See the following link for a guide (I'm assuming you are on Verizon):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32079760#post32079760
You can flash the stock, rooted ROM back on with ODIN, and then download EZ-Recovery (which has CWM) and load a custom ROM that way.

I use aokp but jellywiz is a nice stock like rom. Just download a rom and flash in cwm.

If you want the update you should flash back to stock and restore the stock recovery. You can reroot and unlock the boot loader after you update.

Im having same issue. Verizion trying to force my phone to have less features. I was able to ignore it 2 weeks ago but now it keeps trying to force the update and I can keep delaying it. Any good tools you all know of to just block ota updates all together? Pretty happy with stock rom as is no need to fix it minus the copy and paste bug.

You can use Titanium Backup to freeze SDM 1.0 and the update will quit downloading. I'm not sure if freezing apps is supported in the free version but the paid version is well worth it of you plan on switching ROMs.

You could also flash Scotts stock rooted Rom with the latest update, then your phone status will say up to date. I flashed the zip right on my phone through cwm but I'm sure you can use Odin too

I was in the exact same situation as you. The phone will not update with Clockwork Recovery installed. I simply flashed back to the stock ROM via ODIN (stock.vzw_root66 which a quick search should locate), accepted the OTA update, and then used the beginner's guide in the Android Development forum to get back root.

I use Titanium Backup to freeze SDM 1.0. Like JBO1018 wrote, the PRO version is well worth the price, if only to freeze bloatware. Everything else it offers is gravy.

[Q] Has anyone still not gotten the OTA?

Am I the only one who has still not gotten the OTA? I called a service rep and he said the rollout doesn't end until August 31, so they can't do anything until it officially ends. Has anyone had any luck getting them to push to update out to them?
This is a cluster @?!#. TMobile nor LG has any clue as to what's going on. Before I updated I talked a Rep. They said use LG updater...I believe they pulled the ota due to it bricking devices. Look in the dev section. There is some posts that cover some of this. Imo the only thing good out of the update was the baseband.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
According to T-Mobile support website the OTA is completed as of August 10 and you have to use the LG updater. I used it with no issues.
https://t-mobile.jive-mobile.com:443/#jive-document?content=/api/core/v1/documents/2362
Thanks. I've been weary of using the lg updater because of all the phone-bricking horror stories, but I guess I'll have to give it a shot.
Thank you Ph. I was fishing for that link to post.
I did the updater on 3 phones no issues. If your rooted you will lose it. Don't remember about cwm. But nvflash will work. Look for xboarders stock total and flash it if you need root. Folow the instructions...any questions please ask.

Yea just make sure to follow the instructions on LG's site for updating. Especially make sure you download and install the drivers they have posted. And while the updater is running don't get impatient and unplug anything. Just let it do it's thing until its done.

Yea the update overwrites cwm recovery and you lose root. After the update just reflash cwm and then flash your rom of choice.

I talked to a Tmo rep on August 12th, as soon as I found out they ended the roll out. The rep told me to use the LG updater also (which I did without a hitch), but he told me that if I wanted it OTA he would put my IMEI on a list which consisted of phones that will eventually get the roll out. He told me it was up to Google to send them out from here on out and that it could take months for them to send it out. I don't know if he was talking out of his ass, or just pushing me towards the LG updater, I'm just sayin'..
Google has no part in our update process.
Asus Transformer 3.2 pwnd

I am starting to think that tmo is getting a "short timer" attitude. The hold time is getting longer, reps seem to not really care any more. And all of the post that have filled this forum about call made to customer service. The hole pointing fingers at LG and Google about who is responsible for up dates. I use to love tmo but I really believe it is turnning into at&t.
Any how coocoo how did your update turn out? Any one else have questions?
I also used the LG updater with no problem. Like Ph said, be patient and don't unplug anything until it's done doing its thing.

I still havent updated because im very happy with how my froyo rom is set up. I would like the new baseband though. If i use the lg updater and then re-root and restore my rom will the baseband stick? I know that doing a nandroid also backs up the baseband or it did with the G1 atleast. Also is the new baseband worth it?

Flashing and backing up and restoring roms won't touch your baseband so nothing to worry about there. As for updating and "re-rooting" the update will restore stock recovery so after updating you need to reflash clockworkmod recovery using the nvflash tool. Then you either restore one of your backups or flash a rom, even flash back to froyo. The baseband will stay updated. If you want stock 2.3.3 but rooted then there is a rooted version in the dev section. The stock 2.3.3 update can't be rooted with superoneclick.
Yea man its simple u could do what Ph said, if u like ur froyo rom that much just back it up, then flash stock recovery back on, I didn't unroot the update will overrite that, then update, so like I said make a nandroid, then flash stock recovery with tgagunmans one click flasher (super easy) don't worry about unrooting its how I did it basically u really just need the stock recovery image people weren't doing that and getting bricks, now Ph said he did it without touching recovery but just to be safe flash back to stock, so after that just update then after the update restore ur froyo backup and bamm!!! U will have new baseband and root again just like that whole process takes 15 minutes, the baseband stays on ur phone it cannot be erased nor flashed unless using lg update so once u have it ur golden

The ota update being stopped is a lie. My friend bought his 4 days ago from radio shack. It was on 2.2 over night he got the 2.3 ota.

Did a factory data reset with cwm then restored stock recovery. Updated with lg updater, flashed cwm recovery restored my nandroid of my froyo rom and booted up. Now i have my same rom with the new baseband. Thanks guys. The last phone i had rooted was a G1 and flashing nandroids could also restore the radio so i figured the same would happen with the G2x.

Problems with 1.78 update

Had a problem this morning while trying to update the phone. Just will go through the procedure I went through.
Went to settings and then to about and then just went to update. Downloaded no problem then was prompted to update so selected yes. Phone rebooted and went into recovery. Now first question is does it matter if I have phone unlocked and rooted and have clockwork mod instead of stock recovery. Because I kept getting errors while trying to install the zip this morning.
Do I have to install stock recovery and then install the zip.
Also will this break the root or will it be fine.
I have searched for this problem and could not find it. But I could of missed it. If someone could point me in the right direction would be greatfull

Dude,
NO, you cannot update or install an RUU if you have in any way changed your system partition (e.g. root) and especially if you have installed a custom recovery.
I'm very surprised that your phone has found the update at all! It normally doesn't do it if it's moded in any way.
To get back to stock you'll have to flash a recovery image of your ROM in stock state using the custom recovery, then use fastboot to flash a stock recovery and finally you have to relock the bootloader!
In any case, have a look at these posts:

Yeah, I can confirm that I have seen a significant improvement in signal levels and quality of reception since I've updated to the new baseband!
Some people say they haven't seen a difference but it has definitely made a difference for me.

[Q] Applying VZW system update on rooted, unlocked SG3

I have a rooted, unlocked SG3 running stock ROM and as of a couple weeks ago, continue to get prompted to install the OTA update (VRAGL7 I believe). Unsurprisingly the install fails when I try to apply it.
My question is, do I have to restore in order to apply this update? And if so, is it possible to instead defer the update indefinitely (since I dont want to restore and there doesnt appear to be anything useful in this update according to their site).
Im also sure someone else must have asked this before, but after browsing the last few pages and searching, I couldnt find anything. Feel free to direct me to a previous response if I missed it.
Thanks in advance!
This has been covered numerous times, but, here you go. If you want to take the update, lock your bootloader, Odin back to stock, take the OTA update, reroot, unlock, etc.
If you don't want to do that, freeze SDM 1.0 with Titanium and the message will stop. One thing though, you will not be able to update OTA until you restore SDM. Which, you shouldn't be updating a rooted phone to begin with unless you want a world of problems.
Good luck!

So to be clear, absolutely no way to apply the update without going back to stock first, correct?
Sorry for posting up whats probably been asked 100 times, but really couldnt track it down with a search and browse of the last few pages.
Thanks again.

I did not have to do all that...
I used Mobile Odin Pro to Pre-Inject Root into the OTA Update before flashing it, then I flashed the latest modem immediately after flashing the OTA update.
I didn't lose Root or Unlocked Bootloader status..
Best part of it was... I didn't need my PC to do any of it...
The following thread is the one you should read in detail..

Make sure that you read it and pay attention very carefully. I tried to do the same exact thing and had problems. Had to Odin back to stock. I think my problem was that I was running a custom kernel. Anyway I got the unauthorized software message and could only get into stock recovery and download mode.
Guess I will read the thread myself and see where I screwed up at.

[Q] If I use Mobile Odin to flash stock with EverRoot

Will I then be able to update the device using Kies/OTA? The logic behind the question is that I know the updates need the stock recovery, thus flashing stock with Mobile Odin will give that to my device.
If so, what are the risks in doing the updates with the root? Can it brick? Will it simply fail? What happens when Jelly Bean goes to roll out, will that pose a different set of risks for the device because parts of the core OS have changed?
Just trying to learn more, and figure out what my options are for my device.
PS my device is the P3113.
Just do whatever you want to do right now. When the officially released version of JB is available via Kies or over the air you can flash a stock rom and proceed to update that then. Secondly, I am sure someone will release a version of the stock officially released JB rom with some nice things added and root included once Samsung releases official JB.
You can always flash stock rom and use triangle awat to go back to the day that you purchased your tab with download screen (ODIN/Hiemdall) reset to normal.

I was trying to avoid having to flash over and over again, which is why I thought using Mobile Odin to flash stock, with root, would then give me the ability to OTA/Kies an update.
I guess I was wrong?
I mean if I have to do things the way you described above then I will lol but I was hoping for a simpler way to get the updates, and keep my root. I like the stock, just need to have my root, and don't want to deal with flashing every few months when they release an update/patch/fix/tweak.
I have flashed my devices over 100 times and with nightlies of cm10 for example, i may flash them daily, do not worry

I am not really sure what to say to be honest, I always thought that there was a risk in doing these mods, and therefore, the more you do it, the greater the risk becomes.
It's also a convience factor for me, if I can just get the OTAs (while keeping my root) that would make me happy, but I also know there will be a UI patch coming out for it (or I assume there will be) and I will need that, and etc.
I was just trying to KISS (for anyone who doesn't know, Keep It Simple Stupid) since I like ease of use and simple .
So my plan is not possible and that sucks Oh well, live and learn! Thanks!
Flashed to stock with mobile odin now no wifi
i used the method on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856532 and i used everroot and now my tab keeps saying my wifi is too weak to connect when it shows full bars on the scan screen, idk if this is my individual problem or a problem with this method but i havent found a solution yet

[Q] Cannot get Verizon update to work

Over the past month or so I have tried several times to update my S3 with the Jelly Bean update from Verizon. Each time I try it I get a message that the software failed to install.
O I need to unroot the phone and lock the bootloader in order to update? Anyone else had this problem? Right now I am on Android version 4.0.4 and I think the update is 4.1.2.
I believe for the official update you have to be unrooted and have a locked bootloader unless you do it from kies where it can revert it complete to stock and unroot it.

You are 100% correct. Update will fail due to custom recovery. OP, why not download one of the many JB ROMS from the development section and flash it? Not only will it update your phone, it will be much better than stock as well as easier to install.

I have not yet ventured into flashing other ROMS but am certainly willing to give it a try. I know there are many available but can you suggest one or two that i can try.
Really tough to suggest a ROM, there are a lot of different options depending on what you are looking for. Clean ROM is pretty much stock that has been optimized, I would probably start there since you have only done stock. You can then make a nandroid and flash other ROMS and see which one you like the best.
Just remember, read all of the stickies so that you have everything backed up in case something goes wrong. It takes less time to read and learn it before you have a problem and then don't have what you need to fix it nor the know-how.
Okay, so I download a ROM zip file. I copy it to me microSD card. I have TWRP on my phone. I assume I just go into recovery mode, wipe the cache and Dalvik cache and then just install the zip via TWRP. Is that all I need to do?
Never mind. I just flashed the Jelly_Beans10 ROM and it works fine.
