I recently had an AT&T Tilt die on me. Fortunately, I had warranty on it, so AT&T sent me a refurbished Pure. Its awesome and all, but now I am eligible for an upgrade on one of my lines. So, I'm planning on getting the Captivate from Amazon for $99, and sell the month old refurbished Pure on ebay or something.
What do you guys think? Good idea to swap a Pure for a Captivate? And would I be able to get around $100-200 for the refurbished Pure on ebay?
What about features? I know the Captivate has Android. Is it as customizable as WinMo? Anything I should keep in mind before I take the plunge?

I used to have a winmo phone a couple years ago, and I loved how customizable it was, but then I got the iphone because it was skinnier perfermed a lot nicer and had a lot more features.
now im going to be getting a captivate because it performs better than an iphone and just as much customization (or more) then winmo.
I had an original tilt (tynt2) up until the aria came out. I had been running an android rom on it for a few months and decided to switch. 30 days after getting my aria I returned it to Best Buy and got the captivate on release day.
I am loving the switch. My android fulfills the work, personal, and entertainment needs my winmo just couldn't get.
I will be checking out phone7 when it releases but I am not sure if I will be switching away from android. I suggest you go for it. Experience something new!
Selling rooted captivate or will trade for att banded nexus one, I don't care if its a step down. I miss trackballs, and fastboot.

If you on at&t the captivate its the best option. The only drawback I find over the iPhone its the appstore. The 3rd party apps on the iPhone are just way more Polish.

That's why i kept my AT&T branded Nexus One. I mean I love my Captivate, but it just isn't there yet like the Nexus One and plus the dev community behind the Nexus is second to none. It will get there, but for the time being the SIM card with my unlimited data plan and main number is in my Nexus One again, but i wont be getting rid of my Captivate either. I wish i could take the two phones and frankenstein me a nexus two. Nexus One body style with the 4" super AMOLED and MaxTouch sensor, 1 ghz hummingbird and PowerVR, and best of all Vanilla Android with Froyo. I guy can wish can't he. Until then i am happy with both just not ready to retire my loyal Nexus One, but i feel that when i do it will be for the Captivate. We just need the end of September to hurry and get here bringing us Froyo and we need Samsung to hurry with a GPS fix while the developer community grows.
I bought the captivate on release day. I have to say it's a great phone but it wasn't for me. There are a few issues with the phone that should be fixed by Samsung soon (major is just gps) but other than that its a good phone, it's more technical thats for sure. I had to return it for an iphone 4 instead, music is a big role that is a factor for me when i purchase a phone and although the stock player was ok it was nothing compared to iphone. Thats one thing no one can beat apple in...media. There is also a little bit of lag (launcher pro takes care most of it). If you buy it I would suggest you root it and make sure to back up the At&t apps...i forgot to do that lol, good thing best buy doesn't check
The only problems i have are some software issues that i assume samsung will fix - things that their skinning affected - like not being able to dial a number in a calendar invite. Not a show stopper, but an inconvenience.
As for customization - it is more customizable then WinMo mostly. WinMo was more wide open you copied files and futzed with the registry, nothing would stop you. Android, you have to root first - so an extra step. But compared to the iPhone much easier to customize. Rooting after an update is much easier then jailbreaking.
As far as other comparisons - I like the captivate better then my iPhone 3G, and passed on the iPhone 4. I think the media player in the captivate is superiour to the iphone - the interface is nicer, and easier and sound is just as good if not better then the iphone. More video and music formats are supported too, and even though the screen may not have the pixels of the iPhone 4 it is bigger and better looking. Blacks are black and that is what i wanted.
Android is not perfect, but it is catching up to the iPhone fast. iPhone has at least a year jump on Android, but I think the feature list will put Android on top soon.
I haved had phones of every OS, and Android is my favorite so far - the extent of the widgets is amazing.
I switched over from a BlackBerry Bold 9000, phone is night and day difference. The call quality is better, web browsing, youtube and the screen is awesome. The only downside I find with the Captivate is the lack of push e-mail scheme except with gmail but the plus side is no more truncation and actually get to see all of the html e-mails like looking at them through thunderbird. I will add that I love Android over Palm, BB and Windows Mobile, I have not owned the iPhone but I dont think I can because I prefer the 4 inch samoled screen.

You probably know already since you've been doing research, but the compass and GPS on the Captivate are totally busted at the moment. Otherwise, it's a fantastic handset, and as customizable as you could want.
I got the Captivate on release day, and previously used a Tilt.
The Tilt was running the stock WinMo ROM for most of it's life, but I got bored and flashed Polymod's 2.1 ROM to it at some point.
That's what made me get the Captivate.
The Captivate beats the Tilt and Pure in nearly every way possible. I don't think you'll regret the upgrade at all.
My only complaint is that the battery isn't the best on the Captivate, but it's not a big deal unless you go multiple days without access to a charger.
I say go for it.

My compass is completely busted, but my GPS is fine if I'm outside. It just takes a while to get a lock. Others have reported GPS being way off.

I've never had an issue with the compass unless it gets too close to a magnet. a few figure eights in the air resets it.
The GPS is a software issue, and will eventually be officially fixed. It also seems to be a hit and miss for some people that could be due to bad phone batches, times of day, location, or a million other variables. There are a few GPS fixes currently floating around that should improve any GPS issues at least marginally. they do not fix the underlying issues, but do help mitigate them.
Just curious what your opinions are on these two phones.
I have the iPhone 4, and I have till October 9th to return it after my 30 days is up. With the new G2 coming out, I preordered it and I'm stuck with a hard decision of what phone to keep.

Really? Although I'm not an Apple fanboy, I do enjoy the iPhone 4. I just am having trouble choosing which one to stick with. The G2 will be outmatched in a couple of months which is one reason why I'm having second thoughts.
If you like playing games stick with iphone...if not get a G2...
I'm going from an iPhone 4 to a G2. Not many great reasons though, mostly for the HSPA+ network speeds. I love tinkering with phones though, and I've hit the wall with jailbreaking for the most part. Looking forward to seeing what xda does with the G2
Why not wait for the desire HD? great specs although im not to enthusiastic about the desire design.
I dont like apple due to its lack of physical features (memory card, full bluetooth connectivity etc) so I wouldnt recommend it personally.
As an iPhone 4 owner (hell, I currently own 2 iPhone 4s), it's probably the single best smartphone I've ever owned.
As always, iOS is silky smooth fast and beautiful, the new hardware design is fantastic, and my biggest compliment to it is the battery life. Bar none, the iPhone 4 has lasted longer than any other smartphones I've owned in the past, save for one (the Nokia E71, which I would hesitate to call a smartphone).
I owned a Samsung Captivate previously and looking at the specs sheet of both, it seems like the Samsung Captivate beats out the G2 to me, so I'm going to go ahead and recommend keeping the iPhone 4.
ease of use iphone for me, simple easy to jailbreak and mess with the 4 looks very nice but if you like a tinker id move on for a year then go back when the new 5 is out, new things are cool
3gs and iphone 4 aren't a world apart except for decent screen and rear facing camera which phones have had for ages anyway

I got an iPod touch if I want any iOS heh. And if I want 3g I use mobile AP on the go and tether my phone to it haha. Haven't done that yet.
Basically ask yourself. Do you want a limited idiot proof device? Or do you want something that you have control over and can do whatever you want?

Hi not trying to troll here, but I have a question. why dosent it bother you that the iphone takes common technology like bluetooth, restricts it and then advertises it like it is a fully functioning device?

I switched from iPhone to android (captivate). It wasn't pretty but I'm glad to have done it.
But freedom comes with a price. I had to tweak my phone to even get it to work as intended (thanks XDA!). Battery Life is nowhere near my 2 year old iPhone 3g was.
So just need to ask yourself do you really want to tweak on a phone - or just use it. iPhone is a great working smart phone out of the box - while most Android phones will require you to do some customizations to get it the way you want it.
I have been able to upgrade through at&t but I do not know what phone to get either the galaxy s ii or the iphone 4s. I know there is not a jailbreak out yet for the iphone but it will be soon. I have yet to mess with the gs2 but have done a lot of research on both. My brother has the 4s, nice phone great performance. I am a cnc programmer ( machinist) so cad software is nice on a device in my pocket. All the research I have done and videos always leads to some type of fan-boy ranting. I like the larger screen the gs2 has but I also like the i message feature considering I do not have unlimited text but do have unlimited data. I like gaming and such also. If someone here can give me some advise on the ups and downs of both phones please?
Do you have any experience with iOS or Android? I upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an S2, and for me the S2 is a much better phone, and Android is a much better (and to me more intuitive) OS. But I love to customize, love the flexibility, and need various features that iOS doesn't have. I don't know what your needs are, but I'm not going back to an iPhone.
I’m in the exact same boat as you and I was torn between these two phones as well. Technically, I’m torn between the Epic 4G Touch and the i4S on Sprint, but the hardware is very similar. Ultimately, I’ve decided to go with the GS2.
Between the two, the performance right now is basically identical, though benchmarks put the GS2 ahead. Webpage, app, and other load speeds are nearly identical, though I’ve played with an i4S and I will say it is sometimes freakishly fast. Both have voice search/assistant-type features (Apple’s Siri is probably ahead). And camera quality is the same. This PC World comparison shows GS2 slightly ahead of i4S and even beating a standard point-and-shoot in some applications.
The decision for me came down to customization and “future-proofiness” of the phones. Apple has great support for their phones and releases updates like clockwork. Samsung is terrible at releasing official updates (we JUST got official Gingerbread on the OG Epic 4Gs). However, here at XDA there are tons of DIY Devs that release tweaks, updates, mods, and ROMs for Android that help keep you ahead of the curve. In addition, the hardware on the i4s (3.5” display [small], 512mb RAM [low]) may leave you wanting in a year, while the GS2 should keep you through to your next upgrade (faster processor, larger screen, 1gb RAM, expandable memory, etc). Beyond that, ICS just got released and has been confirmed for the GS2 sometime next year. Apple is starting to show discrepancies between their phones with only the i4S getting Siri. What will they cut you out of when the next iteration of the iPhone comes out?
As for your concerns on CAD software and gaming, I think that’s going to be a wash too. Both have AutoCAD WS for example, as well as other CAD programs (quick Googling turns up a lot), so it may just come down to which specific program has everything you want.
Gaming is a point of contention and it may come down to preference. iOS has more developer support than Android (personally, I too prefer Objective C [iOS] over Java[Android]), so there seems to be more and potentially better games on the iPhone, especially casual ones, but there are more free games on Android. Most games are ported to both platforms nowadays so it may not matter soon. Back to my future-proofiness point, with more RAM and a higher clock speed, the GS2 should be able to handle more graphically complex games than the i4S so newer games may work better on the GS2 in the future.
Sorry for the long post, but I went back and forth over this forever so I know what you’re going through. The real decision comes down to which has more of what you like. If you like DIY customization, potential future-proofiness, and the CAD software on Android, go GS2. If you like the constant support and huge app library of iOS, then get an i4S. Most other things will be too close to make a difference.

Thank you for your input. This is a hard choice. my brother seems to think that I would be much better off with the 4s but I believe he is more on apples side because he has had every iphone made. He did say that the apps are just a better quality for the iphone. I can not comment on that yet because I have yet to use both devices for any amount of time. I do plan on gaming, and the 4s has a .200 smaller screen than my current phone does but it has i message which will be handy on saving texts. I know that the gs2 is fast and really fast with some of these custom roms I guess it comes down to apps and screen size.
Android all the way!!! Sure the iPhone is sexy, sleek, slender, and all sorts of other terms involving alliteration, but the main deciding factor for me would be customization...... Are you an avid flasher of custom ROM's? If so this is a no-brainer. My vote is ANDROID, but those 4S's sure are easy on the eyes and they do feel sturdy.....That is all relative when compared to the awesomeness that is the open source market. XDA Developers all the way! I love the freedom of Android and the massive array of great dev's out there who make our phones that much better and provide us with all the goodies that we desire.
I have never owned a apple device nor a android device. I have a windows mobile device in which i have flashed about 200 roms onto it. I do like tweaking and making it faster with better battery life. I have been sorta stuck in the past with no good games and apps for windows mobile. I have had so many points where my brother shows me a new game and they done make it for windows mobile. I like games like that new modern combat and such. I guess I will have to mess with both units more before making a sure choice.

Think the screen will be a "big" factor... I debated too; the screen was one of the things that won me over. Plus, using CADanything on the little 4S will get old quick.
Galaxy s 2 for gods sake!!
I have made a decision on what to get. I am going to go with the Samsung galaxy s2. The screen size is winning me over. I do not think I will root it right away. Or should I? Just get the thing running at top notch. My bro is already saying we will have to do a comparison after apple starts making games and apps that their 4s will utilize. We will see . I have never rooted a android device before but many wm roms have been flashed. I will have to read up on it.

I am not a fanboy of any OS/Brand. I have used most Symbian Smartphones, never use to like iPhone because they could not do multitasking back then. Nokia passed away i jumped to Android, used as many as 20 android phones if not more, few older HTC, Galaxy S line, recently note 3 and galaxy s5.
Always thought Android is more capable OS and iOS is dumb OS until when i used iPhone 5 for the first time. Being Android user i didn't like limitations of iOS but after that simplicity, no lags, good UI, greatest keyboard made me confused. So i liked iOS a lot, but only problem was 4" screen, due to which i swapped phones number of times between galaxy and iPhone 5s few times.
Then iPhone 6 came with 4.7" and there was no looking back.
Now?
Galaxy s6 looks good and i am confused if i should try a change again, i need help from current users on following aspects.
Built quality of both phones are same, both are slim, i have to put soft silicon cover on it, so hardware does not matter to me.
Kindly tell me:
1- Does extra real estate of GS 6 matters in real world use? (iPhone is smaller bolder fonts, i feel it may carry more text in a given screen though)
2- Does extra pixel density have any advantage over iPhone already very very good screen. ( One battery disadvantage i know)
3- Exynos and 3GB ram is fine, but is Android/Touchwiz comparable to smoothness of iPhone 6 (Kindly only those who used iPhone tell me this)
4- When i was using galaxy s5, i was trying to imitate iPhones messaging App, Keyboard and other things on Galaxy, just looked neater to me and it use to have more text in it. Android apps use to look little messy to me, can be personal choice, but tell me if such common apps are less of a mess now?
5- Even i use to hate WhatsApp for android, i had to use Mods, thankfully they sort of changed it.
I know my post can be little bit crazy, but any input can be useful.

For me at least YOU MUST change the iphone 6 with a s6
You feel the screen of the s6 way WAY way better than iphone
Due to new touchwiz and 3gb ram, the firmware does not have any lag at least for me. S6 doesn't know the word LAG
The whole firmware is way better more CONCENTRATED
I don't use Whatsapp so I can't tell you anything about it.

If you have changed phones as often as you say you have, I don't think it matters what phone you get as you will just jump to another phone soon anyways.
I would stick with an iphone. If you have a crazy love of iphone messaging apps and god forbid the awful Apple keyboard which is the worst and least intuitive i've ever used, you'll never get used to Android.

I don't have crazy love for iPhone messaging App, though i prefer it over any Android messaging App, even though it has flaws like i can't change bubble color. For keyboard, i know there are two kind of people, one who like iOS keyboard, one who hate it, its personal preference i guess too, wish i could take that keyboard to Android, like i use it without even word prediction feature, for me it auto corrects very well. i Should stick, may be.

Material design is good, but touchwiz dont have stock material design that's my biggest hurdle, and hurdle of many. Skin seems to be not much different in real world. WhatsApp is better now after material design update, before that it was like software of 1990.

I don't know why people complain about having touchwiz skin.. Without it there would be no fingerprint scanner software, dual window, gestures and etc. As for your question you might want to stick to iOS, if you are perfectly fine with how it operates. I'm a fan of both Android and iOS, and used both for many years. A part of me regrets not getting the iPhone because I know any software issues would get patched within weeks not months. Accessory support, and software support, you'll be getting software updates till your phone can't handle it, and finally battery life of standby which is still unrivaled IMO. But I part of me would've also regretted getting an iPhone since that phone has so many limitations like as simple as sharing files, its limited. Files you've downloaded would be tied to that app. Can't even delete pictures on the go when it came from your PC/Mac. Also the lack of features you get compared with Android. All in all in the end it comes down to user preferences.

Hey there how are you? Well touchwiz? It's cartoonish. Colours hurt eyes. It has big uneven style icons. Non symmetrical objects. Different apps are different. Even messaging app has such huge bubbles like doremo cartoons. You can say we can change them. But how much change. How much refinement. Refining rooting modifying everything our self? Then what Samsung and company is doing? Finger prints? Samsung can implement them without touchwiz by small driver app. Dual window can also be implemented without touchwiz even though I yet to use it once on my last Galaxy phones.
You talk about file sharing? In my daily life I don't find occasions when I have to share file. So just for file sharing. I can't give up other ease and smoothness.
So just file sharing can't convince me to switch over. Kindly tell if touchwiz is as smooth and lag free as iOS. Then sharing a file or song easily must be good too.
About lack of features? There must be few features which iOS may have over android. Like that of unified settings, back ground data activity can be controlled and few others too.
So if Galaxy this time around is smooth enough. I must give a try too. Not because of file sharing snd some

Android OS still got lots more function and mods but the problem is that mostly likely you will need root to enjoy it so no more warranty. One of the app I love is tasker but many features need root to enable. The camera on S6 is far better than Iphone6 though IP6 is already very great.
iOS the OS isn't great but the app store is, they still owned the most high quality apps there.
So it really depends either you need a OS more, or you need more apps. The best is to get both Android and iOS if you have money. Personally, I'm only a light user so I don't need many apps but I need tasker and camera more so Android is the only choice to me.
There's your answer. You obviously like iOS more so just stay. No one is convincing you to switch. We simply gave our opinions on why we chose a certain phone. I came from an iphone before this, I was Android before the iphone. Every 1 to 2 years I switch between Android and iOS.You say Samsung could implement an app or drivers for features, but look at it this way, every corner of the galaxy s6 has its own features, from notification bar to your dialer app. Might as well make it a skin and hide it within the system otherwise you'll be seeing more than 100 apps trying to run these features.
Unified System Settings( all in one place) vs Unified Storage( any app has access and able to use whatever you downloaded or put to you memory) I chose the latter, I mean how often do I find myself in system settings daily? The theme engine does change a lot of the look unfortunately not much themes at the moment... If you want to actually see some of the features the galaxy s6 offers here's a video...since you already know what iOS has. BTW, I'm not trying to make you switch its really up to if you care for what Android offers. I'll be back in iOS for the iPhone 7.

wow....Well I guess this really is a matter of opinion cause I think the IOS keyboard is unbeatable, so accurate.

Well. You must be right about camera. But you may have noticed. I never mentioned camera in my post. as I don't use camera much. iOS well I can't say if it's great if not. But my main concern was even apps like espn cric info and Twitter and even Facebook are far more smooth on iOS than on android. That's what I feel. You people can feel otherwise.
Plus I want to know about features which iPhone lacks and which matters. Features like dual windows is not useful for me. File sharing is one useful feature but since I don't find much occasions so I can live without it. But it is useful feature nevertheless. What are features are like this?

Did I make the right decision? For me it's a yes.
Really depends on your use case. The iPhone is a great phone. It just works without any hiccup. The S6 feels like a pocket computer, it does everything the iPhone does and more but it's less elegant and sometimes doesn't do it as well.
One of the reason I switched to the S6 is that I can't stand having to encode videos before I put them on the phone. I watch lots of videos so on android I just drag and drop, takes less than 5 minutes. However, on the iPhone it takes several hours to encode and I still have to use iTunes to transfer.
Also the camera. It's better than the one on the iPhone.
So...
1. If real estate is all you care about, yes. But I care about one handed usability as well and the smaller iPhone screen is the one I prefer.
2. Yes. The S6 screen is sharper. Not significantly sharper, but noticeably sharper. Colour accuracy is much better on the iPhone tho, not a fan of the S6's saturated display. The Amoled screen is much better at power saving compared to LCD since black pixels switch off. I use acdisplay on my S6 which is like a Moto Display rip off, this would suck lots of juice on an LCD but not amoled. Also, since the black pixels are literally off, contrast is simply stunning. Especially in the dark.
3. Short answer, almost. For my case I would say it is just as fast as my iPhone. But, if you're a lazy user and don't bother to remove the crap in your phone, the iPhone will be a smoother device in the long run. If you take care of your device I would say an android phone ages better. (My G2 is a testament to that)
5. Whatsapp for android received an overhaul and the ui imo is much better.

Controversial as it maybe but if you like ios and apple hardware I'd not switch to the s6 - yes the screen is great, the build is nice and the camera is excellent. But nothing is worth switching platform for in my opinion.
I came from a nexus device and miss that too, I like my s6 I don't love it - and that's purely down to the software experience.

You are not making me switch, we are talking here to share our point of view only, thanks for the video, i will see it, we all know every phone and OS has give and take, its only what you want to give up and what you want to take, and hopefully soon we can have best of both worlds. Themes are essential in Android and i don't being open and costamizable OS why themes were only for root and mod people, So now S6 have it, its good. You may agree with me Android demands lots of mods and stuff, and the first reason i switched to iPhone and refuse to even try jailbreak because i was feeling little tired of it. At the end it comes down to what a person feel better with.
Thought I would share my experience with Iphone X.
I started with an Iphone 3G. Moved to Android and never looked back... until now.
As far as I can tell IOS is basically stock Android. It has no bloatware, no weird overlays. IMO android and IOS are near indistinguishable at this point.
Some concerns I had with IOS was it's inflexibility. Couldn't change the bottom row of shortcuts from the default ones. Couldn't change the keyboard etc. All of that is gone. It's fully customisable.
One of my main complaints with Iphone was needing to use Itunes, a piece of software I would regard as having perhaps the worst user interface experience I've ever experienced. I haven't had to install it on my PC to use the Iphone X at all. I use spotify, Netflix so get all my media online essentially.
The Iphone X has a processor about twice as powerful as the best current Android chip the 835. It also polls it's touch interface at 120hz instead of 60hz which you have to use to actually understand the difference it makes. I went into a Telstra store and tested the Iphone and the Note 8 and it was immediately apparent the Iphone was a far smoother experience. Knowing the CPU was more powerful I immediately attributed it to that, I went home and looked it up. I now believe it to be a combination of faster processor and the better touch response.
I went with the Iphone X for a number of reasons. It's horse power, it's screen responsiveness and lesser blue shift at angles, it's cut down stock android like interface. It's guaranteed updates for probably 4 years or more (5s is still updated which is from 2013). Also due to the closed nature of IOS apps are better optimised.
I was sworn against apple products and probably generally still am. I just decided to put my bias aside and judge what is actually the best product available right now. My conclusion was the Iphone X and I stand by that decision after using it for a week, by far the best phone I have used so far (Also the most expensive )
