Official Rooting/Recovery thread for the Droid 2 - Droid 2 Android Development

This is the Droid 2 Rooting/Recovery thread,
Please post all things in regards to rooting and getting recovery on the Moto Droid 2. Maybe we can even get a bounty going for whoever is willing to work on it.
Edit: WHooo! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764950

got my hopes up with the title

Looks like the creator of exploid.c is working on the droid 2 now
I've already posted what he requested at http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2010/08/droid2.html
If anyone else is curious in the output, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5816696/droid2_adb_output.txt

so i am guessing the superuser 2.3.3 app on the market will not install on the droid 2

That be a no.
But still it's cool to know we got some big dogs working on this.
I don't even have this phone but my brother does and it seriously needs a custom rom.

bad news, birdman's twitter said that without a droid 2 in hand, he can't work on root.

PLEASE tweet to _mrbirdman_ That would be amazing!

Yeah if you or someone could at least loan a Droid 2 to him for a bit, I'm sure we would get some results much faster than waiting for enough donations to buy one outright.

i can and will go back to my d1 to lend this guy my phone....rooting is becoming a make to brake deal with me....and now i hear we cant flash roms...how annoying...anyway how long do you all think if i sent my phone to this guy for a bit to use it to try and root it would it be before i got it back? would i get it back? and what if it just bricks or something then what.... like i said id be down to help everyone out just need to feel ok with this and my new d2

anyones guess on how long to get it rooted. i doubt it would get bricked and anyways once the sbf for droid 2 is out it could just be restored.

Loaning a device may not be necessary anymore..
http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2010/08/droid2.html
Who wants to test? It seems like we'd follow the same basic steps as the Droid X root method, but with some modifications for the new files and possibly a different directory.

I'll try it out in just an hour and post results. If anyone cares to try before me, go ahead.

I've been trying, but received permission denied at rootshell.
/sqlite_stmt_journals doesn't exist, so I had to use /data/local/tmp. I tried hotplugging with WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane, et al with no luck.
Code:
H:\Droid2Root>adb push exploid2-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/exploid2-arm5.bin
199 KB/s (0 bytes in 9552.000s)
H:\Droid2Root>adb shell
$ cd data/local/tmp
cd data/local/tmp
$ chmod 0755 exploid2-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 exploid2-arm5.bin
$ ./exploid2-arm5.bin
./exploid2-arm5.bin
Android local root exploid (C) The Android Exploid Crew
[+] Using basedir=/data/local/tmp, path=/data/local/tmp/exploid2-arm5.bin
[+] opening NETLINK_KOBJECT_UEVENT socket
[+] sending add message ...
Try to invoke hotplug now, clicking at the wireless
settings, plugin USB key etc.
You succeeded if you find /system/bin/rootshell.
GUI might hang/restart meanwhile so be patient.
$ rootshell

Successful..

I got it to work! You have to execute the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin in the same manner you did exploid2-arm5.bin first.
EDIT: I got the # rootshell but now SU doesn't want to work . . .

So it's rooted, but we still need a recovery / flash solution so we can get this ridiculous Blur off the system.

What recovery is this going to use?
Lets you choose
After I just finished a few hours ago reading every post in the other thread and following all those steps!
Way to go, jiqqaman! This will help out quite a few folks on here.
Awesome. I rooted my phone earlier (at least I think I did) and I can't get any rom to install. I think it has to do with the amon-ra recovery so I'm glad this will let me choose.
Does it matter that my evo may already be rooted?
Damn your quick.
Wow Amazing if this works I like very much. Great work put up a more prominent donation button
Such a tease!
so this will root a phone that did the 6/29 OTA? just by following these steps?
Where do I get this util?

Jiggaman, you are DA MAN! BTW, check your PM. =)
also jigga, i noticed the first step is a factory reset. is there any way to back up any of my apps and/or data before doing this considering i dont have root privileges at the moment.
Will this do full NAND unlock?
Sorry if that is a noob question.

wow this looks easy.. quick question.. do i have to update to 1.47 first? or does this do it autmomatically?
im running stock and just ran unrevoked for the wireless tether..
i know these are noob questions but people are reporting great battery life on the new update and i wanted to update but dont wanna lose my tether..

I dunno anything bout unrevoked , but this doesnt give you the latest radio/wimax that the 1.47.651.1 OTA has. Theres a guide that shows you how to add the latest radio/wimax somewhere on the forum.
I'm using this as my very first post here.
On my old evo I used simple root and it was amazing! I had to return the old evo and get a new one, and as luck would have it it came with the new update.
I can't wait for this new simple root to be uploaded, I keep checking this thread every 5 minutes.
Anyway, one this program is up, running and working I assure you I will be clicking the donate button.
Thank you for the work and effort you are putting into this.

well unrevoked basically let you do anything root would except remove bloatware and flash roms
cuz what i was planning to do was install the update directly from my phone and then root with this method .. if i do that will my phone have the latest radio wimax added on to it already?

How To: GTalk Video Chat on CM7

Hi Folks,
As some of you may know the AT&T Atrix 4G just got a Gingerbread build yesterday, that build was 2.3.4. Some of you may also know that the Atrix is powered by the same Tegra 2 chipset that drives the G2x.
Well as it turns out, it's very easy to get GTalk w/ Video support working on the G2x using CM7 and that update (Don't thank f-in LG, thank Motorola!!!)... Here are the steps (on OSX, adapt as needed):
Proceed to Step 2 of http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Atrix Upgrade/Atrix-Gingerbread-Update and Download the 161MB zip file
unzip -j ~/Downloads/Blur_Version.4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US.zip *alk*
Code:
Archive: /Users/.../Downloads/Blur_Version.4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US.zip
signed by Moto-SignApk
inflating: Talk2.apk
inflating: libtalk_jni.so
Follow the steps from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056793
Code:
#mount the /system partition as writeable
adb remount
#backup the old Talk app
adb shell mv /system/app/Talk.apk /system/app/Talk.apk1
#uninstall the old gtalk, I think it clears the related cached bytecode too.
adb uninstall com.google.android.talk
#copy the two new files
adb push libtalk_jni.so /system/lib/
adb push Talk2.apk /system/app
Now for the bugs:
- G2x FFC thumbnail is upside down
- Confirmed: Phone can see video from other side, but other side can not see video from the phone. This has been confirmed G2x -> Nexus S and G2x -> OSX Chrome w/ GTalk plug-in.
Update 2011-07-27: bongostl repacked it into a flashable install (gapps-gb-20110613withtalk-signed.zip) available @ http://www.multiupload.com/WF29XUSINW
Update 2011-08-11: Word is one needs CM nightly #98 or higher if your thumbnail picture is upside down
Cheers,
-G
(irc: jumpkick)
Great work!

awesome. you should definitely put this on CM7!!
The first link is taking me to a motorola store of some kind.
nevermind, i found the page but it wont let me download. I see the grey download link but it says I have to check a box first and I cant find the box!!
Never mind again, there was no box but i clicked all around the sentence and finally the link opened up. Thanks for the post.
For some reason It looks like this post was moved also to another part. I found it in development but it is marked as moved.

yeah did not realize that ... my bad ... one more thing i wanted to ask ... what else can the atrix 2.3.4 update give us for the G2x which we are missing right now ?
also .. is anybody able to make a flashable zip out of this ?

No.He is referring to the atrix update.
You need a rom like cm7 on 2.3.4+

This might be a dumb question, and I'm sure someone will let me know if it is. I flashed this GAPPS and everything is fine. When I go to open Talk, I can't find where I would find the preview so I can see if the FFC is working. It installed Talk 1.3, is that the correct version? I'm running Trigger 13 w/ new baseband.

Android Market 3.2

I know this should be in the themes/apps section, but this update makes the market smoother and kills the loading bug.
*See the attached items below*
To install ...
Copy to the the /system/app/ directory, and delete your current Vending.apk, then change the permissions to rwxr-xr-x.
Or ...
If you have adb installed, copy the vending.apk to the same directory and ...
adb shell
adb rm /system/app/Vending.apk
*ctrl + c*
adb push Vending.apk /system/app/
adb shell
adb cd /system/app/
adb chmod 644 Vending.apk

Unfortunately no, it isn't an official release. But its definitely legit.
It makes sense, but downloading executing and confirm with yes to replace is a bit easier

Got to get up in 3 and a half hours for class haha. Thanks though! Enjoy the new market, its so smooth ;-).
If anyone has any problems, I'll be back to help in about 5 hours haha.
It looks like a reboot it's needed after replacement (also wiped dalvik cache within recovery don't know if it's really needed), otherwise there are many fc from the market and the search button doesn't work.
But after it, it works smooth, like you said

What are the differences between the Verizon and us cellular versions of the x and could this possibly be used for root of XT1055? I know I'm unlockable, but can't kill my warranty just yet.

[TOOL][BRICK]One-Click AutoBrick

For years, people have relied on complicated manual methods to brick their devices - including, but not limited to:
Generally not knowing what they are doing
Flashing stuff designed for other devices, especially bootloaders
Following guides written for other devices and writing stuff to random partitions like /dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Rebooting to recovery with a non-working recovery
Wiping data from the bootloader or the Settings menu with a non-working recovery
Messing around with nvflash
This tool simplifies the process tremendously - just install and run the app, type "I AGREE" and click the inviting auto-brick button. Done! Your tablet is now an expensive paperweight. Bricking your device has never been easier!
For advanced users, there are even more options to break your device, including powerful exclusive wipe commands that transcend the wiping capabilities of the common recoveries. There is even UltraWipe (TM) which clears every bit from your eMMC - your device has never been this clean!

Damn i was trying to brick this device since i got it in 2012 and now good brick tool it's finally here....thx _that. :good::laugh:
Yes! Finally a method to get my final setup once and for all in seconds! And I was so damn stupid forcing power off during bootloader flash...
So it's a definitive hard brick? Even nvflash with my blobs won't help? I want to be sure my nightmares will be gone with all my problems. They won't go away if there's still a chance to get tf700 working again
When I will get bored with using my tablet as a pad for my coffee mug there will be only one question to answer - will it blend?
I still prefer to do it the hard way, but great work none the less. :highfive:
I would have posted in the support thread, but there isn't one. :silly:
Why we have to go through all of these troubles...:crying: Just give it a good bubble bath with power on and that is it....:silly::victory:

I wouldn't even know how to brick it so hard that even nvflash doesn't work. According to the AndroidRoot guys, you can wipe your bootloader and still recover with nvflash. I don't want to try if it can recover from UltraWipe.

Thanks for the warning, but if you posted a serious question in THIS thread, you outed yourself anyway [emoji12]
Seriously - either find a thread that is similar to your problem or start a new thread in the Q&A section. And we will need a lot more information to be able to help:
What rom/recovery/bootloader are you on?
What happened to "brick" your tablet?
What have you tried to do etc etc
Again: do not answer here! Provide as much and as detailed information as possible in an approbriate thread in the approbriate part of the forum.
We'll find you and help if we can....
WTF
WTF I can't believe it. I just bricked my device.
I'm suing the **** outta yew
I really need a "check for brick" app. I keep trying UltraWipe and it's just not working. What am I doing wrong?
