Factory Reset VS Out of the box (Differences) - Captivate General

I was going to exchange my phone for a new one before my 30 days is up which is tomorrow, so I did a factory reset. They ended up not letting me because they knew about the GPS problem and said there is a fix coming. I also had my email disappear and wanted to just get a fresh device before I am stuck for 2 years.
So I wanted to see if anyone else who has done a factory reset has noticed the same or differences from before they reset it.
1. Data icon (3G,E) still shows while WiFi is connected. Before the data icon wouldn't show.
2. Facebook pictures sync works much better and actually sync's pictures. Also its doesn't take 20 clicks to select the contacts to DL.
3. Phone overall doesn't seem laggy as much and much more responsive.
4. When I open messages the first time it keeps asking if I want to set a limit, which I have to say no every time. Very annoying, not sure why it keeps asking,
Note: I haven't rooted this time (I was before) yet and I have less apps installed. I haven't installed the official FB app in case it was conflicting, but I doubt it.
I will add more if I notice anything else. Today is the 3rd day since the reset.

Curious to see what replies you receive. And you're saying AT&T wouldn't return it even though there is a "known-issue" with the phone?

Yea, thats BS. if the return policy is 30 days you should be able to return it. And who gives a **** if there is a fix on the way. It doesnt work right now, and you signed a 2-year agreement for a phone to have a working GPS unit which doesnt; breech of contract.

They wouldn't let me exchange it, I probably could of returned it, but not sure if I can deal with going back to the Fuze with WinMo. At least I turned the Fuze into a portable Garmin GPS with internet calling via WiFi.

(psst. just tell them it shuts down randomly for no apparent reason.)
I exchanged mine for this (real) reason. It was ridiculous. My Captivate continued to shut down at least 2-3 times a day. I even contacted Samsung about this issue and they said to just exchange it.
I did a Factory reset and hoped that it would fix the problem. Three hours after doing so, it shut down on me again. I have had it. I just exchanged it.
Sorry I can't really help you with the different between stock and a factory reset device since I didn't really take notice of it. Although, after the reset, I went to Settings - About Phone - System Tutorial and clicked Begin. Nothing happened. Yesterday, with my new device after the exchange, the Begin button took me to the Tutorial.

I had 3G connectivitiy problems before, and after doing the odin restore those problems are gone. It may have been poor network conditions for a couple days, but either way, my problem no longer exists.

Questions

So I got my XT720 a few days ago and am loving it. Two things though:
1) I've had to do a quick reset (take out battery) about 4-5 times in the same amount of days. What happens is sometimes the screen will go blank (or when I press the on button all that will happen is the 4 buttons at bottom of phone will light up). Screen/phone becomes unresponsive and only way to get back to normal is to take out battery. I'm pretty sure that every time this has happened has been right (or shortly) after me downloading something on my phone (i.e. putting on a new wallpaper, or a song). Anyone have this happen to them?
2) I don't want to root or put on Dexter's ROM just yet. The reason for this is because a) I just got my phone and I don't want to void the warranty until I know everything works with no issues b) I'd rather wait for the complete/fully polished version of the ROM - I'm in no hurry right now, this phone is a big big upgrade from my previous phone even without 2.2.
Anyways, the point is, I'm pretty sure my phone isn't running with the 720MHz update right now and is running at 550. I want to put on that update to make my phone faster while I wait to root. However, whenever I go to - about phone - check for system updates - and click on that, it always tells me "Server unavailable. Try again later.". Been trying for the past few days and no luck. How can I get the 720MHz update (without rooting - at this point)?
Thanks
If the screen doesn't come on when you turn on the phone, you may have a defective one. My first XT720 was a dud right out of the box. I had to take it back to the Cincinnati Bell store and get it exchanged. I've heard of other people having similar experiences with the phone not turning on. Take it back. If they give you any crap about it, just tell them that the Motorola tech from their forums told you to take it back. This adds a bit of validity to the problem and may make it an easier transaction.
Nah, it works fine for the most part. Turns on and off and runs just fine normally. But my issue is I've just had it basically freeze up 4-5 times in the past week (noticing a possible connection to me downloading things).
I would think your phone is running at 720mhz. I believe the European / Asian versions were originally 550mhz & had an ota udate to the 720 level. You could download Android System Info or Elixer to check it out though.
I would also agree with reverendkjr, it the phone is acting funky take it back & get a replacement.
The XT720 from Wind is 720mhz with stock firmware, the only 550mhz was Korean version AFAIK, maybe some Euro versions.
As for the screen, you may want to try doing a factory reset on your phone. If it persists after that take it back to Wind for a replacement, had my wife's XT720 replaced due to a microphone problem.

Oh? I figured it might be at 550 since going back to homescreen - it reloads pretty often (thought 720 wouldn't do that), though it does run snappy enough in all other areas.

Be a bit of a pain to factory reset at this point. The problem isn't terribly disruptive at this point. Doesn't happen often enough to really bother me and restarting is quick. If it does continue and become frustrating I may consider factory reset. I just was wondering if anyone else experienced this.
WIND would give me a replacement at any time (within the year) if I told them about this issue? (Kind of hard to prove since it happens at it's own whim. Don't want to seek a replacement just yet anyways - not unless it continues and is an annoyance)
Just put a call into support so they have a record of the problems, explain to them you cant reproduce the problem, but it is a brand new phone and should not be doing this regardless.
They will suggest the reset to see if the issue persists, but you can decline at this time and at least get the issue logged so you have a better chance of replacement in the future.
Keep in mind though, within 14 days they will replace with a new phone, beyond that you may get a used one.
I can't imagine just ignoring a problem with a new phone like that. Especially since you have the ability to have it replaced for free.
Heck, I took a phone back once because it had ONE dead pixel on the screen. When the girl looked at me and said "Really?" I said "Hell yes, I just bought this damn thing and I want it to be PERFECT!"
you need to setup the APN to connect to 3G to get your 720 upgrade from OTA (if purchased unlocked Euro or Asia models)
if it's a Wind XT720 it should already be on 720

Yeah, I suppose that's true. If it happens again I'll look into getting it replaced.
Thanks for the help guys.
my XT711 has done the "blank screen a few times also and I have to remove the battery to reset it. Very strange thing, but I have had the phone for only a few days so im gonna see what its gonna do first cause sending it back to china is a pain in th butt.

[Q] Mango Data Problems

Didn't seem to have this problem when I first put Mango on but now it seems to be happening everyday. What's basically happening is my data connection just seems to disappear. 3G shows fine and SMS's come through, but I can't get on the internet, Twitter or Facebook at all.
The only way of fixing it is to pull the battery for a few seconds and then boot it back up. Flight mode doesn't fix it, nor does trying to change the carrier.
Anyone else had the same issue? Can see myself going back to NoDo unfortunately
Same issues here. Everytime the phone goes to 3G (or even G) it seems to loose data connection. Means no browsing, no bing maps, no syncing whatsoever...the same thing happened to me with NoDo, so I'm going to stay with Mango beta. Switching to flight mode and back usually fixes the conncetion though.
Reverted back to NoDo and data seems to be fine again (fingers crossed). It started to get worse, to the point where I'd only be able to get data for a few hours before needing to pull the battery.

I had this on mine. Worked out that you have to select your phone provider's network explicitly in 'Settings' - Cellular' or 'Mobile Network' (if in Europe). If you use 'Automatic', it looses the data connection quite a lot...
Hope this helps!!!!
Just updated to Mango a week ago - Official via Zune.
Hadn't noticed it till today but I went on a long trip today and saw that after 20 mins or so my emails had stopped syncing. Only thing to get the connection back was a soft reset.
Seems after an hour or so it drops the data connection, and even though it is displaying a G/E/3G/H the connection isn't actually active.
This is a major issue... I can't be resetting my phone every hour!
I wonder if it is an issue with the roaming switch between Orange and T-Mobile because from what i've read it only really seems to be happening to people on Orange or T-mobile with the Omnia 7.
Another reason this is going to be my first and last Samsung device! Roll on Nokia.
Upgraded to official Mango and still getting the same problem, needing to pull the battery and boot it back up to get data running again.
Will try geddeeee's suggestion.

I tried this but it didn't seem to help. I'd be curious to see if it fixed the problem for you though.
I now know of at least 4 people on Orange with the Omnia 7 now suffering this problem.
Nope, doesn't work. This is ridiculous and kinda makes the phone useless as a smartphone if it keeps losing its data connection every hour. Not very happy at all.

Likewise. It renders the phone more or less useless. May as well have a dumb phone.
I hard reset mine 2 days ago and haven't installed or changed anything on it yet to see if it happens. I haven't been to an area where i'd lose reception yet though so i'll see if it helps.
As an aside some other problems i was having with mango have been solved with a hard reset. Improved battery life, voice to text is putting punctuation in properly now (before it would put spaces like "don ' t"). My lock screen doesn't have lag displaying the time and calendar info any more. That's what i've noticed so far at least.
May be worth trying as it seems that the update didn't seem to install properly for me.

After updating to mango mine was taking an age to boot up. sometimes as much as 2 minutes and it happened several times where it actually just froze completely with a black screen and just the battery indicator displaying.
I havent had a reason to reboot it yet so not sure if thats changed.
I was suffering the disappearing keyboard as well but so far touch wood. that hasn't happened yet either.
Well, tonight I went off for a run through the forest where i knew i would lose reception.
Sure enough when i got back to my car my data connection had died "email last update 39 minutes ago" or whatever.
Needed a soft-reset to get working again. So hard-resetting the phone hasn't solved this. I'm getting stupid battery level problems too, had this for a while now. When the phone is on it will show around 30% battery, after a soft reset it comes up with battery critically low.
Getting fed up with this now. If i return the phone I'm pretty sure that the same problem will be present as it's software related. All it means is my phone is more or less useless now.
Well I thought the hard reset had done the trick. Had emails coming through right up until I went to bed and turned on flight mode. Just trying to access data now and it's not working again.
Nokia's phone announcement and release can't come soon enough.

I was genuinely gutted when i saw it wasn't working. It lasted two days and I thought it was fixed too. I don't know if it may have made it slightly better though...
I'm due an upgrade the start of next year. Like you say it can't come soon enough. I really love the OS, Mango is great but it seems Samsung have managed to ruin it again.
Nokia for me for sure.
I'm convinced this is an issue between the Software and the Orange network. Something either Samsung or Orange should have picked up during the testing phase so I can't see a replacement device being any better.
I can either sell it and get around £160 or so towards a new phone, or change supplier. I could go back to GiffGaff but O2 doesn't give 3G in my workplace and the other suppliers are too expensive for what I'm after.
The problem waiting for Nokia's phone is that I'm not going to have the money to buy a brand new Nokia outright and I don't want to get tied into a 18/24 month contract as I'm quite happy on my 30-day rolling contract.
Decisions...

Tough call. There is always the possibility that a "Samsung Update" will be pushed out in the near future that could solve this. Between Nov 2010 and now i've had 5 updates to this phone so it's at a rate of around 1 every 2 months. And one of those was a firmware update only. It could be that it is simply a radio software issue and a new rev. could resolve it.
For my part i have insurance with Orange so they have already agreed to take the phone back and replace it. I know from past experience if i have the same fault with the phone 3 or 4 times they offer a different hand set in exchange. So conceivably if i keep sending them back i could get a Mozart or Radar i would guess.
The problem with that would be that i'd have to keep re-setting up new phones at a rate of around once a week and that's a whole world of hassle
Just out of interest, did your Omnia 7 have any Samsung apps prior to upgrading to Mango?
I've forced my Omnia 7 to upgrade to Mango via the Zune trick so I'm not sure I'll get any Samsung updates as I'm using a stock Microsoft rom as opposed to a Samsung version. Samsung haven't even released their version of Mango yet, have they?

When i hard reset none of them were pre-installed though.

It kinda feels like it is actually running better, to be honest. Internet (when it works) seems to draw the pages quicker as well as loading quicker, it feels smoother between transitions of apps so I think the hard reset has helped to some degree.
I've also got a "Help+How-to" app on there which I didn't have before the hard reset.
It'd be nice to have constant data access though I'm not holding out much hope for any updates to the OS from Samsung or Orange to fix anything up either.

[Q] Bad ESN Mesmerize, few questions

So I got one for $34, delivered today. Looks perfect other than a couple scuffs on the bottom corners. The seller said it was working fine (despite listing saying it was for parts/not working). I don't have any usable cell service where I live without getting a booster and antenna of some sort, so I don't care about activating it. I plan on using it basically as an internet tablet to check email, etc.
I do not have an sd card, charger, or data cable yet, they should come tomorrow. Since the battery is close to dead, I can't find out much. It turns on fine, gets to the home screen and has that "too many pattern attempts" screen (screen looks perfect, not a single scratch by the way) with the google login. I know not to try a full hard reset with the battery being about dead, but I have tried to bring up the menu option so I know how to get there when I do get it charged. I have tried every key combination method I can find with no luck, keys ~seem to all be working from what I can tell, read in the comments that a few people had no luck. One time I got that screen with the android and shovel, waiting for download. I was wondering if that is from the factory, or if that means it's been rooted?
Basically, all I really want to do is restore it to stock for right now. Maybe something better down the line, I'd just like to use it for now since I've never even really seen a smartphone before, because nobody has one with the poor cell service here. I have the EE19 build downloaded, and I see the restoring to stock thread. I want to do it the right way. So, if it has lagfix installed, I see I need to disable that. Any other things I should know about? I was just wondering if it sounds rooted, if I need to do something else if it is. I don't have a lot of time on my hands to do research, although I did a little already, and I have a very limited internet connection so I can't download a lot of things, I wasn't expecting to need to do this when I communicated with the seller.
Thanks for any advice or tips.
Edit: I was also wondering the best way to go about checking the ESN, or if I should try. Like I said, I don't care to activate it on US Cellular, but if I'd resell it or something. I know I could use PagePlus, but the Verizon tower is 30 miles away, so not much chance of that working well either. I don't think it should be stolen or anything, but was thinking if the account ever got settled or anything....
Well I got it, posting from it now. Only problem is unsuccessful download errors in app market, after download is almost complete. On wifi. I tried every solution I found for that with no success. Other than that, no problems.
Tried every fix for the market, deleting cache, changing permissions on vendor.apk, etc. Seeing it was a common problem with few solutions that work, I flashed CM7. That worked great, apps installed fine, but of course wireless cut out constantly, not usable for long. Saw that was common, tried everything with no luck. Went back to stock, then airplane mode, now market works fine. It fails whenever not in airplane mode. So I'm sticking with this for now.
Can't activate anyway, but best I saw was -104db, but mostly no service. My LG tracfone does a little better with reception.

Phone ceased working, causes Pixel to Reboot

As of Saturday, my Pixel refuses to make or take phone calls. It seems to work flawlessly in all other regards.
If I get a phone call it takes a long time to acknowledge that I've selected to answer the call. I can then neither hear the other person, nor can they hear me (no line noise, complete silence). If I choose to hang up, the Phone app ceases to work, and within a few minutes the whole phone reboots. Making call doesn't even get that far, as as soon as I initiate the call the phone app ceases, and again, within a few minutes the phone reboots.
I chatted with Google Pixel Help twice yesterday. They checked a bunch of things with me, then suggested a factory reset when those didn't work. Yesterday, the issue only seemed to occur after the phone had sat idle from a reboot for a while. So initially after the factory reset things were working. When I got home, however, the problem persisted, and was now occurring every single time the Phone app was used. It's now 100% reproducible:
https://youtu.be/5YSJpLVBR1A
https://youtu.be/sENelMnE4eI
I've tried using 3rd party dialers, but they all seem to throw over to the stock phone app as soon as the call is made. I have no idea what happened.
Google hasn't been helpful, as their support person said I'm out of warranty (purchased in late-Oct. 2016), and thus have to deal with Telus. I have I feeling I know how that's going to go (ie: not well).
Anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
Happend to me too.
I just got an email back from the Google Store Support manager. She just reiterated that the phone is out of warranty and suggested that I visit UBreakIFix to see about getting it repaired.
Overall, I'm quite unimpressed with Google's support on this. If I have to replace the phone, I'm seriously going to consider something other than Google.

Well I mean if the phone is out of warranty they are following the same guidelines literally any other manufacturer would. Their response is kind of a non-problem and your reaction is kinda poor. Anyways for now try rolling back to the factory image before current and then updating back to current, might do something.
Edit: preferably keeping the -w intact but you can try dirty flashing it first

Question Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus_Please help with my phone issues

Since the day after I traded in my Galaxy A50 to upgrade to my brand new out of the box Galaxy S21 Plus, I've been dealing with multiple issues beginning with inability to connect to Wi-Fi public Hotspot which I use for everything in my place for past nine years and no check issues even if I have several devices connected. the s21+ wouldn't even see the xfinitywifi broadcast like my other devices do, then it would see it and attempt connection only to get authentication errors. everyone I've ever talked to about wifi issues are robots that all say reboot your modem. I DON'T HAVE A MODEM because I use public Hotspot. sorry for yelling, my blood pressure rises thinking about this. anyway tech says factory data reset (I knew better), but I did it anyway, then it gets worse, lost contacts, important apps from my employer, important vm's, because my ringer refused to operate even, volume was erratically adjusting itself hi low hi low anytime I attempt blue tooth connection, then my messaging app would race my pandora app upon blue tooth connecting as well I would win that by fighting both apps but still my messaging app would stay on simultaneously with pandora. my s21+ I got brand new unopened $1k on payment plan. Verizon said too late for warranty is only good for 14 days after purchase. keep telling these people my issues began on day one and on day three I finally had time to call support the first time. the store I bought it from (go wireless), tried very hard to help fix it but they only knew what settings to check but they were all correctly set. magically they were able to get my ringer to work and called me a couple times while I was there to test. after I get home, my ringer magically would not work once again. since Verizon was trying to rip me off by telling me they can only replace the s21+ under their 14 day warranty with a certified pre-owned s21+ but at that time, it was beyond the 14 day warranty period. I so I got high blood pressure and said NOPE I will be receiving a brand new phone because that's what I am paying for, I did not purchase a pre-owned anything, so let me talk to whoever is in charge of making that happen. team leader put me on hold until his management went home for the day, he checked couple times to see if I was still holding (better believe I was), last time he asked I told him I'm calling Samsung direct then he tried arguing with me as I hung up. Samsung warranty is good for up to one year as is typical for anything aside from landscaping. well they want me to send my phone away with me paying postage and having no other phone, but they will fix it when it arrives in Texas?? why can I not just get a replacement from the store I purchased it from?? Samsung answer because it's most likely a software issue, if it is then it has to go to Google because they are the one's who developed the software. WTF can I do?? anybody have any clue how to fix this?? I'm thinking a 20lb. sledge, torch maybe, brick and the river?? but then I'm out $1k for a phone that never worked right out of the box.
It does sound like software but doing a reset didn't fix it which is odd?
My suggestion would be to download the correct firmware from sammobile and flash it to your phone with Odin.
At the very least you will be ruling out software if there is still issues.

I agree. Try reinstall the OS back onto your device from scratch and see if that works. Or if it is still within the 14 day warranty, take it back to the store for a replacement unit.

you do have a modem in your phone. and its likely the culprit. do yourself the favor and get samfirm or frija, theyre firmware downloaders, and enter the info the tool needs to D/L your firmware and flash it on the phone with Odin just as stated above. There are 5 files that come inside the zip of firmware you end up with once frija has finished. the 2 files to pay the most attention to are CSC and HOME_CSC. CSC will factory reset it, and HOME_CSC will not, otherwise theyre the same thing
