[Q] Able to tell if lagfix is still applied? - Captivate General

Hey all, I'm a lurking noob here. First android phone, but lots of previous linux experience. I rooted my phone, loved it, installed the 1-click ext2 lagfix, loved it more. Then, got itchy, formatted the phone to JH2, and re-rooted using unleash the beast. Still love it!
However, I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell if that ext2 partition is still there? I think that reflashing a stock rom through odin would remove it, but I'm not sure.

I'm bumping this in case there's someone who can answer my question on this evening. The lag fix itself is clearly not working, since my quadrant scores are normal (~900), but I don't know how to check to see if the ext partition is still there.

use the following apps: dolphin HD browser, twitter, facebook, k-9 email, touchdown, feedr
if any of these are laggy, there is no speed fix applied. Dolphin is near unusable without a speed fix.

An Ext2 lag fix like the one posted on teamwhiskey's website will be fastest. However EXT2 doesn't have journaling which opens your files to be corrupt. That's why it's faster because it doesn't have to journal. Check the Vibrant forums. Voodoo is the safest. The speed difference between ext2 and ext4 isn't too major.
i would grab the latest cognitive rom and flash that, i have the 2.2beta9.1.1 running on my captivate and it has very few hangups and lag is next to zilch. only time i notice anything lagging or hanging up is when i have 8 browser windows open, market, contacts, adult movies hd, dishpointer pro, slacker, and a few other apps running simultaneously then it takes a few secs to change to home screen and stuff like that but that's why they created app killer but yea the voodoo lagfix is prob. best as far as performance/safety balance, just remember you have to disable voodoo fix if you ever need to install the original rom as it doesn't support ext filesystem

[Q] Question about changing ROMs on g tablet

I am currently running tnt lite 4.2.3. I updated to that directly from stock. The performance I'm getting is less than many people on here say they are getting (i'm getting a quad score of 1730). Everything is working (marketplace, maps, etc) and i'm relatively pleased, but it still seems quite slow. I should also mentiong angry birds won't install for some reason. I'm not sure if i did something wrong or skipped something (i never did anything with partitioning my memory). I was thinking about starting all over again, but i noticed there are several "starting points" for tnt. Can someone recommend which version I should revert to and direct me to the best way to do it please? Thanks in advance.
Hmm weird, Ive been getting nothing less than 2050 on all scores for every rom Ive used and I think the going rate for the tntlite is 2400! You might want to try to reflash it maybe
nmac99,
Since your tablet is working fine (though I agree it sound a little slow), you have lots of options. TNT Lite 4.2.3 is the older 1.0.1-1.1 generation of software, so you can
change simply by re-flashing using stock recovery.
I have a suggestion. I just completely wiped and rebuilt my 3991 version machine and
I install roebeet's 4.3.0 and then 4.3.1. It worked smoothly and really looks nice since
it has some of the latest stuff in it.
Since you are at 4.2.3, all you would have to do is download 4.3.0 and 4.3.1 and
install them. Load recover folder and update.zip into /sdcard. Shut down. Reboot
into recovery by holding power and volume + down until you get the black recovery
message.
Go to roebeet's thread in Developers and read up and see what you think.
If you decide you're not interest in that, then I would recommend recoverying the same way to Version 3588. It is solid and you could go any direction from there. And
again, all you would have to do is flash it with stock recovery process. You might
need to reset the factory data (Settings menu, Security Option on G-Tablet). If so,
you would have to put your date, time, other settings, passwords, etc. back in.
Hope this helps!
Rev
P. S. -- I think 2100-2200 is realistic for Quadrant. Less you're behind and more you're ahead!
EDIT: Just found the Tnt Lite 4.3.2 is out. Happy modding!
I'm actually adding a new recommended pre-req to my TNT Lite and gADAM posts, today -- basically, I'm going to request that users try to start with 3588 stock as a baseline.
The reason why is because I think users who are modding back and forth all the time have started moving too far off the beaten track. When I test a new mod, I almost always do it with either 2967 (from my nvflash) or 3588 stock. And a do a data wipe. That way, it minimizes all the weird issues that might crop up if I was many steps away from stock.
Thanks for the quick replies. This board is awesome.
ive installed tnt 4.3 with no problems except i cant get the market to work. I tried the same fix i did on 4.2.3 and it doesn't work. i can initially get it open, but then it force closes after about 5 seconds and i get the process com.android.vending error. is there something else i should try with 4.3? or is it best just to reflash? by the way, i really like the look of 4.3 compared to 4.2.3. i haven't been able to run the quad score either, but it feels faster.

It is a tad faster, as the system.img is based off their 3991 UAT - allegedly their next released stock firmware will look and feel very similiar.
I have not had an issue with the Market and 4.3.x, but again I always wipe my data when I test my mods.
Suggestion: if you didn't wipe data and want to avoid doing that, make sure that the Market app is REMOVED from your downloaded applications. It's possible that the app there is the same (or older) than the one in 4.3.2. Just taking a complete guess, here.
It worked with the data wipe. thanks for all your help.

[Q] Any way to make things more simpler??

So I got the Nexus S, i9023, after spending a good amount of time trying to figure how to do the Root, CWR, ROM, I still can't get things to work properly.
My main issues with the Nexus are the camera while recording cause it sucks!, the media playback controls on the lock screen and the speed of the unit in general, I mean N4G.com feels as if the phone was using a browser from the middle ages!!!!
I've been going around the forums but is kinda hard to read along threads of 100 pages of posts, not a guide with straight answers, just for the steps I have managed to accomplish I had to use Youtube, Google and another 4 pages + these forums to make sense of what's first and then go on "trial & error" cause some of the steps have updates on different pages that others don't even mention.
So, I was able to Root, CWR and then install CM7, then I reverted to stock cause the Market is gone.....lovely....but is even better afterwards.....
So the phone works on the stock Android again, but now I can't make the phone to boot on recovery again so I can use the CWM options, I can't make RM to install or run anything, the phone will simply does nothing...and if I try on flashing the Clockworkmod recov then I get a "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"........and I have SU installed.........
Btw, how do I install a kernel??? or flash the camera (if that's possible)....
Thx to any kind soul who could share it's own experience....
I recommend you do more reading and research before you flash anything. Cm7 does not come with market for legal reasons, you have to flash it separately. To flash a kernel you just download and flash it in recovery.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
In your current situation you need to use fastboot to reflash recovery and use recovery to reflash superuser.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
there is a one click root option which i keep on my desktop. way more than one click but i it does everything pretty much for u. try doing that.
Ns4g.com is bad because they have terribly coded flash content.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Hello all, thx for the replies, N4G can't be that bad since the issue repeats itself at other pages like cnn, espn or even worst if u try eltiempo.com (newspaper from Colombia), the last one lags horrible on pc using FF and doesn't even load as full page on the Nexus or my N8, that page is so badly designed that even the mobile version sucks (problem is the news back home are kinda best shown there....).
In any case, as I said before, "Trial & Error", I already have installed CM7, Liquid SR, Miui and Oxygen, loved Oxygen, kept Miui, Liquid is a nice idea but needs work and CM7 is a bit rough.
So far I've learned how to restore from an image of a previous ROM (kept my original backed up in case!!!), also how to reinstall SU in case I have to go back to stock, how to install a new kernel (thx to Google and not the Search in the forums!!!), I did also overclocked my NS to 1.2G and seems pretty stable.
Things I still don't like and will look in the future to solve are the issues with the camera, Miui fixes part of the issues with lag while recording, I got a snag during a test recording made today, also the controls are not that amazing for the camera, no Zoom???, and the Gallery is not a plain gallery but mainly a file browser which makes it confusing if u forget what folder ur supposed to check...
Also the issue with the battery not hitting 100%...kinda silly....
In all it's been good but the time spent is a pain, mainly cause there is no explanation about how to apply the files, what order, etc, is nice to find things here in XDA but is rather annoying to have to use Google to find things around...
Thx again for the replies!!!

CyanogenMod 7.1.0 Milestone XT720 RC1 bug report

hi all
i followed the disskusion in Milestone XT720 Android Development CyanogenMod 7.1.0 Milestone XT720 RC1
tried 2 reply but i never posted something so iam not allowed to post in def forum
i think iam not the only one with this problem
tried to make my 10 post in offtopic to join the diskussion but faster deleted than posted
so here i go
at first i wanna thank all the devs for the good work
to see cm7 build from source on my xt720 makes me smile
although thanks to all other guys made roms 4 xt720 loved most of the tested but CyanogenMod is my favorite
my last rom was Mioze7Aes cm6.3
so again thanks to all and back to the now
things i missed/bugs found:
still no crystalltalk
missing the standard gallery 4 hdmi /the realhdmi app i used on cm6 although not working
fixed in the builds i got from
https://github.com/peshovec/playground/downloads
when i push hardwaremenubutton/manage applications/running it shows me 0-15mb free ram most time i locked 0-5mb
when i look in other tools like android assistant it says 25-60
is it a bug or is it only cause i have no plan about the ram use
btw what about swap saw the qestion in orginal thread too can we do it the same way like on Mioze7Aes cm6.3
other people with same problems ? some are altough talked about in the orginal thread

hi jensblau...
i'm having the same difficulty with the 10 post issue.
i would also like to post to that forum topic
---------- Post added at 08:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:06 AM ----------
i apologise for the short messages i may post but maybe we can get our 10 post minimum requirement on your thread. or possibly this thread will catch a developers eye and acknowledge our posts.
i have tried many versoins of the roms. however due to functionality and asthetics, i always find myself flashing back to dexters froyo.
i have not been a fan of AWD launcher as the primary launcher of any of the threads until i flashed this CM7 rom. the transitions are smooth and it looks great.
here is a list of things i have found on my side regarding the rom, i have only used the latest build [30.10.2011]:
Camera issues:
hd recording: initially when i went to recording, it partially worked but the screen looked like a tv with an interlacing issue. now the screen is just blank. i'm not stressing too uch about this as the hd recording was never really reliable on any rom, including the stock 2.1.
Widescreen photos: this one bugged me the most so far. there is no longer the option of taking photos in the native aspect ratio of the screen, which makes the phone seem less impressive in the gallery as pictures do not fill up the screen.
Applications:
i have not tested the GPS as extensively as you [30mins] but so far no issues. i cannot seem to successfully launch any gaming applications, whether graphics demanding or not. games just seem to hang on the loading screenshot and shortly after force close. i am not sure if the games cannot load due to an accelerometer issue?
is anyone else having gaming issues?
Memory::
RAM: seems inconsistent, whether 50mb+ is available, or 15mb, i cannot seem to run apps smoothly.
Links2SD: cannot link applications with links2sd, i have triedformatting the partition to all supported formats on the setup screen of the application but still no luck.
other than these issues thus far, i think this looks like a very promising rom
My problem is I can't charge when phone turned off, stuck at M logo @@
gps/navi
my navigation problem was the loadingcable from usbradio in the car it seems
without cable no reboot no force close dont know if the radio is the problem or the phone
@shalzn that was my hope to someone of the other thread recognizing this
@jjackichan works 4 me had that problem with an erlier build
update-cm-7.1.0-MilestoneXT720-beta-26102011-signed.zip was it i think are you running update-cm-7.1.0-MilestoneXT720-beta-30102011-signed.zip
bzw i reflashed 2.1 betwen what i didnt before since cm6.3
swap
this is the thread i found and used on cm6.3 4 swap maybe i ll give it a try at we
i used the file from post 5 i think

is there a way to switch ext betwen 2/3/4 without formating it
If you nandroid backup then restore sddata it will restore as ext2. In Mioze7Ae's recovery mod for the xt720 there is an option to convert ext2 to ext 3/4.

Converting along this path ext2 -> ext3 -> ext4 is pretty easy. Going backwards isn't very easy. If you just want to gitrdun, use ORXT720 to make and restore a nandroid of "SD Data". This will automatically backup, format your /sd-ext as ext2 and then restore it's contents. Then you can use "SD Card Utilities" to change it to ext3 or ext4 if you wish.
thx 4 the fast help
nice this tock not long time you found our nerdthread big THX 4 your help

I think it does. I just booted boot2.img from CustomCore3.rar and it came up with swap enabled. But, swap seems to make things lag quite a bit from what I can tell. It shows 60MB free after boot. I think we have too much memory pressure with our current minfree settings so too much stuff is being forced onto swap and we're thrashing. So, it will probably need tuning using something like AKMO or maybe my swap is just too big.
Caveat: I didn't use the other parts of CustomCore3.rar (because I'm on linux). Also, the build I'm running is very close to the one fjfalcon built and released, but it's not the exact same one (nothing about the swap support should be different, though).
You'll find that our forums are a bit more friendly than some of the others out there. Just keep posting until you reach the min to get into the dev thread and then you can ask directly.
AKMO-autokiller memory optimizer is going to be your friend for awhile until you get your personal memory issues worked out. It is free in market and set it to optimum setting to start out. Then once you get the hang of it, you can tweak at will.
thats the plan
love this forum it allways helped me with my problems
next qestion is how to use akmo strikt or optimum bzw one of the others
wich do you use
and what heapsize should i have tested 32 and 40 i think
but will edit this afternoon after checking this no time have to go to work now
edit:much better after installing akmo
Go with 32 heap size for now and use the optimum setting in AKMO for a bit to get the feel of it. Then we can work on tweaking that. When I was on Kahls V4 my heap was 48 and my custom AKMO were 16,16, 74, 82, 90, 98 and usually had high 50's to mid 70's free ram always with no swap boot. That was on that ROM, not CM7 though.
@ woodrube...
hi there, i am fairly novice compared the skills of the others. i think the reason though is that many of the bugs reported concerning baseband, market. disappearing messages have not happened to me.
in connection with your post above, could these settings be keeping me from running graphics intensive games? they all hang at the startup screen and force close. nfs shift ran superbly on my stock 2.1, and dexters froyo. but now it seems nothing will run unless i rsd my stock rom. i tried brian lee's 2.2 v1.7, which runs the smoothest out of the lot, but still no 3d games.
i would like to be able to run at least something decent to show off on CM7...
You just need a lot of free ram when you run those games. The AKMO tweaks will help with that. I suggest getting Titanium Backup Pro (root) version from market. It is well worth the money. Go into settings, apps, running services and you can see what is running and how much ram it is taking. You can use TB to freeze renegade system apps that eat ram. This will free up available ram to run heavy games. Another app is Chainfire3D with 3plugins. It is used for Tegra gaming and graphics. I can upload the plug ins later on this evening bc they are a pain to find on the net. These should help.
Edit: Chainfire3d app is in the market (root) but I uploaded plugins here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19090240#post19090240

tried these apps. but no luck. as well as V6 supercharge, tried a few of the modes.
the titanium backup pro does not function as you described to view running apps, unless i'm missing something.
i have 61mb free an not able to run anything.
going to rsdlite back to 2.1 to test the games to see if its not something that changed entirely on the phone.
will give feedback and maybe you can assist from there. have you managed to run anything graphics intensive on your handset just?

CM7 required flashing ti a 2.1 rom before installation.
NFS will not run on this 2.1, i dont recall if i have ever gamed on this sbf. do you think the problem could start with this rom being the start point of all flashing?

Titanium will not find the rogue running services, it can freeze them. Say you do not use Maps for example. Go into Settings>Applications>Running Services and see if it is running. If so, then you can go into TBPro, find the Maps app and "freeze" it, thus preventing that app from running and eating up valuable RAM in the background. FYI without running Swap boot, 61mb is reasonable. I do not run graphic intense games, so not sure if the problem is the 3D graphics, available RAM or something else.
Looks like the SBF that you are running is the Brightpoint one. Maybe try the Cincinnati Bell Wireless one. It is in the SBF thread and has proven to be one of the most stable SBF foundations. I would suggest you try the CBW SBF if you want to test on 2.1 or maybe try one of the other ROMs and test on them to see if it works on those. Don't forget that CM7 is still a work in progress. Build up your posts so you can post in that forum. Others in there might be having the same issue. There are a few gamers over there.

He is just having 9 kinds of hell getting that game running. Bet Libertymonger could help him since he runs games like those. If he is having this much trouble getting the game running, I dare not say anything about running swap.
thanks for the help guys.
i'm beginning to think maybe there is a problem with my older apk's and data files.
all the games that used to run on my stock rom and dexters froyo are not running anymore on any roms.
however i have gotten NOVA, and Samurai II [tegra 2] to run smoothly and from the experience they seem to be more involved games. so in theory the phone and roms should not have any difficulty with the older ones. so i'm gonna give it up as installation issue. plus i dont really like nfs, it was more of a show piece in the losing battle against blackberry amongst friends...
i have tested the above mentioned on bravo 2.2 v1.7, and cm7. runs a bit smoother on the bravo for now. but it will keep me happy until the kinks are out of cm7.
would you recommend me running swap boot? will it increase performance? or should i not tamper too much now that its running?
BTW, free RAM has dropped like crazy. +-25mb. nothing major running. keyboard t9 mod : 8mb, google framework: 9mb, whatsapp: 10mb. the remainder add up to under 2mb
does this sound right with those figures?

Hi,
I do run swap boot on CM6.3 and have seen almost all games working better except a few (9mm which was quite laggy even after a swap). But I think problem with swap is that It freezes my XT720 once in a while.
BTW, I plan to switch to the Bravo V1.7 for the time being as I want to try HDMI out which I never used even in the stock due to its limitation of gallery view. Does the Bravo HDMI out work on any games?
Thanks to all the Devs for keeping my XT alive.
Cheers

[Q] Lollipop super slow at times?

Hello all,
I have installed lollipop when it came out, I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. Then I reinstalled a bunch of apps I use (games, apps, utilities) - all from scratch to make sure that old setting and such do not interfere.
All seems to be fine (smooth, fast) - only some apps do not seem to work - however, in some cases (when for example opening Chrome) I see huge slowdowns...
Anyone else experienced this? How do I find out what is causing it? How do I fix it?
Thank you for any suggestions
Un-install Facebook. I was about to revert to Kit Kat, but I figured I would wipe and re-install. I noticed slowdown when I installed Facebook, so I nuked it and my tablet is butter smooth now.
The Facebook app destroyed lollipop performance on my Nexus 7 too. This is not a Shield issue, it's a Facebook/lollipop issue.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet using XDA Free mobile app
Wow. I had facebook installed but not even logged into, and i saw dramatic reduction in stutters and pauses when i uninstalled it.. how facebook, how?!
Thank you all. I do not use facebook. Any other possible reasons?
Applications I have installed are foldermount, adaway, titanium backup .... Could those cause this?
I also don't have Facebook installed and get some hang ups, especially when a system animation is about to occur (opening an app, going home, etc).
I'm rooted as well, with foldermount, adaway, ultimate backup (jrummys titanium), and a slew of other games and stuff. I didn't really think it would be an app issue. But maybe. I'll get rid of a few apps I have on my phone and see if I notice a difference.

Thank you. I tried that - and it makes no difference. And the problem is not just with Chrome, as I experience (more or less random) slowdowns elsewhere too. I am a bit disappointed with this whole new Lollipop experience. On one hand it is (much) smoother than Kitkat was, on the other hand I get slowdowns, incompatibilities etc. which I never experienced with Kitkat
Well I have LTE version, i am rooted with philz recovery locked bootloader and orginal kernel, i use Seeder (find it on playstore) and weekly clear cache and dalvic/art cache, have no lags and slowdowns on lollipop, if there are, they are so rare that i dont notice any more.
Did you factory rest after the update? Cause i read somewhere that already installed apps have issues with lollipop so fresh install is recommended, i also have no issues with facebook either...
And also did you try changing processor mode to max performance in Shield power control under battery menu from optimized.
I must also mention the battery times have improved alot compared to kitkat...

Thank you - I will try your suggestion (I did a factory reset).
For now I have another (larger) problem to solve - apps moved to the SD card disappear...

Try this thread:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/major-issue-apps-sd-card-dissappear-t2950126
edit: oh i see you already did...
Try going into Google play disable notification and select do not auto update apps
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Sdcard can make your shield slow. My Samsung 64go uhs-1 makes my shield slow if inserted with exfat , but no problem with NTFS and a 64kb cluster size.

Thanks, I'll have to try with a re-format.
Tablet is stock, not rooted and boorloader locked. I sideloaded the lollipop OTA on my LTE version and i experience the same issue.
It flies most of the time but sometime, especially when downloading or updating apps from Play store or opening random apps like Skype or even hangouts the tablet will come to a crawl.
I think this is a lollipop issue which nvidia need to address with an update.
I have to say on 4.x the tablet was unbearably slow at times and it didnt seem to be related to any specific app. After installing lollipop fresh and clean everything is really smooth, except Chrome. When i open Chrome and start navigating i see things slow down to being unresponsive for 30-60 seconds at a time and immediately working if i close Chrome. I also have a Nexus 5 with Lollipop and no such issues there. I did install facebook so ill try removing that. Ill give the optimization thread a peak too and see if that works.
Im impressed overall with the Shield tablet, but its a blemish that general web browsing is faster on CM11 on my Kindle Fire HD (original). Maybe Nvidia will come out with a fix, or someone here will pin point the exact cause.

For me, web browsing in general has been a pain, many browsers don't seem to work well on our hardware. They all feel somewhat sluggish. And flash has been very picky for me... I think it is finally dying, haha.
Get rid of Facebook if you have it and try this for chrome

Lastpass?
Do you happen to use LastPass? I found that, upon a fresh install, everything worked great until I installed LastPass. The way that they set up autofill in lollipop seems to hang up the whole system. When I disabled "Enable fill service" in the settings, the tablet was blazing fast again.
After playing with it, I found that I still got decent performance while still being able to leverage the best part of the app by enabling the fill service and disabling the helper and scanning for password fields.
A little app called cache cleaner can do wonders? and a simple reboot also helps a lot.
Btw. im using Yandex Browser for now untill BoatHD gets the lollipop update and it works really well on the Shield with 5.0
