[Q] Question about changing ROMs on g tablet - G Tablet General

I am currently running tnt lite 4.2.3. I updated to that directly from stock. The performance I'm getting is less than many people on here say they are getting (i'm getting a quad score of 1730). Everything is working (marketplace, maps, etc) and i'm relatively pleased, but it still seems quite slow. I should also mentiong angry birds won't install for some reason. I'm not sure if i did something wrong or skipped something (i never did anything with partitioning my memory). I was thinking about starting all over again, but i noticed there are several "starting points" for tnt. Can someone recommend which version I should revert to and direct me to the best way to do it please? Thanks in advance.

Hmm weird, Ive been getting nothing less than 2050 on all scores for every rom Ive used and I think the going rate for the tntlite is 2400! You might want to try to reflash it maybe

nmac99,
Since your tablet is working fine (though I agree it sound a little slow), you have lots of options. TNT Lite 4.2.3 is the older 1.0.1-1.1 generation of software, so you can
change simply by re-flashing using stock recovery.
I have a suggestion. I just completely wiped and rebuilt my 3991 version machine and
I install roebeet's 4.3.0 and then 4.3.1. It worked smoothly and really looks nice since
it has some of the latest stuff in it.
Since you are at 4.2.3, all you would have to do is download 4.3.0 and 4.3.1 and
install them. Load recover folder and update.zip into /sdcard. Shut down. Reboot
into recovery by holding power and volume + down until you get the black recovery
message.
Go to roebeet's thread in Developers and read up and see what you think.
If you decide you're not interest in that, then I would recommend recoverying the same way to Version 3588. It is solid and you could go any direction from there. And
again, all you would have to do is flash it with stock recovery process. You might
need to reset the factory data (Settings menu, Security Option on G-Tablet). If so,
you would have to put your date, time, other settings, passwords, etc. back in.
Hope this helps!
Rev
P. S. -- I think 2100-2200 is realistic for Quadrant. Less you're behind and more you're ahead!
EDIT: Just found the Tnt Lite 4.3.2 is out. Happy modding!

I'm actually adding a new recommended pre-req to my TNT Lite and gADAM posts, today -- basically, I'm going to request that users try to start with 3588 stock as a baseline.
The reason why is because I think users who are modding back and forth all the time have started moving too far off the beaten track. When I test a new mod, I almost always do it with either 2967 (from my nvflash) or 3588 stock. And a do a data wipe. That way, it minimizes all the weird issues that might crop up if I was many steps away from stock.

Thanks for the quick replies. This board is awesome.

ive installed tnt 4.3 with no problems except i cant get the market to work. I tried the same fix i did on 4.2.3 and it doesn't work. i can initially get it open, but then it force closes after about 5 seconds and i get the process com.android.vending error. is there something else i should try with 4.3? or is it best just to reflash? by the way, i really like the look of 4.3 compared to 4.2.3. i haven't been able to run the quad score either, but it feels faster.

It is a tad faster, as the system.img is based off their 3991 UAT - allegedly their next released stock firmware will look and feel very similiar.
I have not had an issue with the Market and 4.3.x, but again I always wipe my data when I test my mods.
Suggestion: if you didn't wipe data and want to avoid doing that, make sure that the Market app is REMOVED from your downloaded applications. It's possible that the app there is the same (or older) than the one in 4.3.2. Just taking a complete guess, here.

It worked with the data wipe. thanks for all your help.

[Q] Update not loading

Guys,
I just became the, now rather dubious, owner of a gTablet that a colleague brought for me from the States. So far I am not that impressed. Several apps that supposed to be on there, aren't (no Kindle app out of the box, and no gMarket, despite what the manual says).
SO, I try the announced update procedure: fails.
First time fails at 8%. Second time fails at 13%, third time fails at 28%, fourth time fails at 4%. Is this a joke of some sort? Also the download is rather slow, as in, they use smoke signals to get the message across!
Does anyone have the update as a file that I can run as an apk perhaps?
I also have to point out that the GUI rather sucks. The settings menu misses about 50% of the Android 2.2 options (I have a HTC desire. Waaaay more settings options...)
After my complaints, lets get to figuring this out.
1) Can someone point me to the update pack if it is available for download via my Mac and can be installed using that ES explorer program it has installed?
2) Does the update provide Google Market or the original weblink? Does it use a different gui or still the same simpleton gui?
3) if not, is there a simple ROM flash I can do that gives me a different GUI and google Market?
I have flashed my HTC Hero before, which was not a big deal. However, I want things done simple, so if there is a good ROM with a nice GUI and simple instructions for a noob (I got two left hands when it comes to this sort of stuff), and Google Market, I would gladly see a link.
Any support will be very welcome!

Forget about the stock update and read about TNT lite or the vegan beta Rom if you feel experimental. You can get market flash and pretty much all the Google goodies.

A good start would be the following guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Understand that there are newer versions of the rom referenced, also there's VEGAn, a rom based on the Vega.
The Gtab stock needs a lot of help but it is a very good product with a little TLC and some grunt work:
Different devices/users different opinions. I am more than satisfied with the performance and feel of my Gtab without flashing a different ROM and what I did was follow these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
I used root explorer instead of AndRootFile
Then I changed my launcher to ADW.Launcher
Side load flash (Instructions/.apk on XDA-developers)
Do the market fix to get all market (Instructions/.apk on XDA-developers)
add titanium backup
add ROMManager
Note: When I applied the latest update from Viewsonic (fixed the video driver, now AngryBirds, etc working) I had to re-root the device but everything else works fine.
Even fixed the issue with Gtab not seeing Ad-hoc network from phone (Instructions can be found on internet). Now my Gtab rocks, connects to my home Wifi or if not available connects to my Phone Wifi.
I can still launch the default tapNtap if I want to and Viewsonic upgrades apply fine. I had an issue with update also....Support had me set the sleep to "off" and then it worked fine, however the update image was posted on XDA-developer:
Bobtran,
Interesting perspective. Could you run Quadrant and show us what that score is?
I have had TnT up to 2.2 then swithed to VEGAn beta3 now. Q =2411
Most everything runs very very fast...
All, Thanks for the suggestions and the useful links . I might be flashing mine this weekend.
As for which ROM to use, what are the pros and cons for one over another? E.g. if I were to take the TnT ROM (I think it's at 2.4.1 now?), how does that fare against, say, the Vegan Beta4 (I think the latest is beta4 from what I read on some posts)
Bobtran, did you have a link for the update image? seemed like you were going to post it, but got cut short...
Guys,
I am trying to install Clockwork Mod v08 as per one of the links. First issue is that the tablet won't mount the SDcard to my desktop. SHouldn't be a big issue as I can coy/paste the required files from the internal storage to the SDcard via ESexplorer (standard installed on the gTablet).
However, how do I know it installed correctly? I don't see a new app and the boot install goes very fast. There is an opened box with an arrow pointing down and a load bar that seems to have green hashed filling, as if it's preparing to install. Then suddenly the splash screen pops up. The box with arrow and progress bar are there for a second or so, maybe 2. Seems rather quick. Is this correct?
EDIT: I wanted to say the boot screen didn't come up when starting up with vol+ and pwr, but just noticed, it does... so should be ok
well, seems I have been successful in flashing the new ROM (TnT 2.4.0) using CWM-v08.
Question though, the instructions in the TnT installation guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245) seem to say that the market fix only is a partial fix (note that the comment applies to TnT2.2).
Now that I installed the TnT2.4.0 ROM, I was wondering if the market fix is also only partial for TnT2.4. If yes, can I run the patch at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
and if yes, would that give me full Market access? If not, what's involved in getting full Market access?
As a side question that may not belong here but wouldn't be answered in the appropriate forum section: I have an XT701 phone that needs a Market Fix. Would the fix at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
also provide my phone with the Market? Just a side question, if no answer, that's fine...

Unfortunately I flashed to TnT lite yesterday so can't do that anymore without starting from scratch. Just testing the waters so to speak.

[Q] CynogenMod 7 issues on the GTablet

I apologize if this is the wrong area for these questions. I'm having a few issues with my installation of CM7. I've tried looking in several places, but nothing seems to address my problems.
First thing I noticed upon installation was that I was never asked to set up my touchscreen or input my google information. I tried doing this manually by adding an exchange account, but that would not work. I next tried looking for my apps to see if they installed automatically this time around or not and none of my previous apps show, nor does market exist anywhere. Without any instance of market to be found I can't use any of the market fixes. However, without an inputted google id I don't think that would have mattered.
Can anyone guide me to where I can find help for these issues or post any possible solutions?

Google apps - Flash right after you flash CM7. You might have to bypass the setup, but should be able to open the market and input google login. It won't auto download, but you'll have some market access.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919958
Read the dev thread for other issue and such, don't have the time to dig through and help further.

As the previous poster said, install Gapps. That will give you the setup screen the first time you reboot the GTab. As a word of warning, I wasn't able to bypass the first screen (touch the droid) on the main version posted in the development thread (the Beta05), even with the click around the screen. I was able to get past it right away on the "offical" build in post 18 of that thread, however (Beta01).
Let us know if that doesn't fix your problem.
Thanx alot guys. I was finally able to get market going by installing gaps and using the CyanogenMod 7 bet01. I ran into the seup screen issue with the Beta05 just like you warned. I didn't do the full market fix as everything I wanted was readily available. I'm not even sure if the full market is absent or not.
I am noticing that after you mount the USB connection you can't unmount. Also, my internal storage isn't recognized. I think there were fixes for some of this in Beta5. Is there a way to update to Beta 5 without having my previous problems or some other fix for the USB and storeage issues to anyone's knowledge?
flash to vegan5 and you will be way happier.
I tried CM7 and it had so many issues.
Once you flash vegan5 you will actually enjoy your tab
You can try flashing beta5 over beta1 and clear cache/dalvik. I'm not sure if that will work, but would be my best suggestion.
On the other hand, I actually agree with the previous poster saying that vegan is probably the better option at the moment. It seems much more stable and feature complete, even if it is froyo instead of gingerbread.
Either way, make a nandroid backup so you can go back if things go sideways.
I didn't get to post this before the responses. I did actually go ahead and flash over Beta01 with Beta05. I just didn't wipe the data or cache. Everything came back just fine. This fixed the storage and usb issues in Beta01. However, you have the previous audio issue from older builds where you have to plug in headphones and unplug them to get the audio back. I've tried VEGAn 5.1 and it works awesomely. I'm merely choosing aesthetics above overall functionality.
My tab has been delegated to fancy entertainment device (comics, casual browsing, games and video). It does all I need for now. I figure since VEGAn and CM7 are joining forces, why not do the switch early and test it out. I love where they're going with this ROM. I can't wait to get my grubby paws on a finished product.
Again, thanks big time for all the assistance. I generally skulk and read through the threads, but I love this place and all that everyone provides for the lesser technophiles like myself.
I thought maybe I could post my own problems to this thread?
So I'm on cynogen 6.1.1 on htc evo 2.2.1 kernal [email protected] #1
Anyway... I've tried 3 times to install the update to 6.1.2 today and each time it's gotten stuck around 58%. Any links to places I'm sure are there and I just couldn't find?
Also, for some reason, for the first time since I got my evo, I'm getting TONS of errors when attempting to send sms. theres a pink like traingle with a ! in the middle. Any suggestions?
How do I fix the bug with the camera?
You can email me if you like, at [email protected].
I am sort of inbetween a newb and whatever the next level would be, lol. This past week I was able to root, and install a custom mod, AND install an update to that customed mod (which is the one i'm on now) all w/o ever posting any questions to any forums. Hopefully that'll get me some brownie points?
Please PLEASE please!! I will even paypal $10 once I get this resolved.
On bended knee I beg (im not really this dramatic in real life )

This usually means the installation was corrupted in some manner.
And it's usually because of a corrupt zip one would flash with.
You can reflash cm7 with another fresh downloaded file if you still have access to recovery mode.
Which I think you should be able becase the boot up process makes it up to the "Android" Bootscreen before it starts bootlooping.
From Advanced Recovery mode you can mount the USB option for the SDCard then transfer the fresh DL to your SCDard that way.
Also make sure you are using bekit's version .8 of CWM while in recovery mode.
Grab CWM v.8 from here
Other versions of CWM don't work well with the GTAB.

[Q] What are the risks of using a custom ROM?

But what are the risks?
Is there a recovery path to restore the stock rom if things don't work?

I believe this is it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000
The risks are:
1. You will not return it back to the store
2. You will not sell it
3. You will not toss it out the window
4. You will not get as much sleep, because you will be too busy modding it
5. You will have to apologize to your better half for less time spent with them
6. You will enjoy it more
etc... You get the drift....
I've decided to just go with the latest factory update (3588) and the generic enhancement pack. After loading Launcher Pro and assigning it as my home (and fixing the market and loading a bunch more apps), the tablet is fast, stable, and I'd never know that TapNTap was even on the thing. Now when Viewsonic sends an OTA Honeycomb update (Ha!) I will be able to download it.

When I had the enhancement pack installed I couldn't get OTA updates.
After the latest update I switched from the enhancement pack to the tnt lite rom.
Since the rom had the update and more already.

If you go through any number of threads, you'll see probably the most troublesome issues are looping reboots, magic number errors and semi-bricking, I say semi because people have reported that the Gtablet is unbrickable with some work.
Personally, I also wanted to stay official but I recently moved to TnT lite 4.2.x out of wanting the updated market and not wanting to deal with multiple flashes and I've been very, very happy. So far the supplemental updates have been flawless.
There's a recovery path and I guess it generally works, but oy veh - it's a chore when you have the Tablet set up perfectly and then have it go down for any reason. With any 're-do' or switch from one ROM to another, you have to wipe your programs and settings. Some people do it without wiping, but in general that's a bad idea. So really, along with the few very pesky risks, the only other issue with venturing into ROMs is having to wipe and setup again if one gives unresolvable issues. If the typical path doesn't work, that's when you'll have to venture into APX mode and NVflash territory - that's where I dread and the reason I didn't want to get into alternative ROMs myself.
It takes a bit to put your trust into a ROM (and more so, it's author/s). So far, I have no issues at all with TnT Lite 4.2. I just went to 4.2.4. I don't ever update right away....just like I do with official updates, I let a day or 2 pass so any issues can come into the light.
At this point, I'm going to be waiting for a Honeycomb ROM, whether official or otherwise. TnT Lite 4.2.4 is perfecto so far for what I want my tablet to be/do currently, so I highly recommend it.
I'd start with TnT lite first (since I can say I have never had a problem with installing it or with it installed), if you don't like it then try the others, that is of course only if you get that undeniable urge to move forward (and you likely will).
Good Luck!
I would have to say, after flashing my gtablet at least 30 times - to try out new roms as well as make some tutorial videos, that there are so many advantages to doing so. Even nvflash and apx drivers to restore to stock is not that difficult if you are willing to take the time to get the neccessary files and read through the instructions a few times. Although I have gotten a few reboot loops (mostly through things I did wrong in my attempt to try new things and not following instructions), there is nothing that I haven't been able to recover from. The gtablet hardware is pretty darned good, and the custom roms that people here have posted are great and sooooo much better than running stock that it is night and day. I highly advise anyone who is wanting to have the best experience out of their gtablet to take the time to read up and then take the plunge - if you really mess up, there is plenty of help here on xda.

[Q] Display Settings Force Close

Hey all. I'm pretty new to the community. I got my Gtab a little bit after Christmas and have been working my way through getting it just the way I like it.
I've gone through the process of flashing it with TnT Lite 2.4.0, fixing the market, etc. One thing that continues to happen is when I try to go into the display settings, it force closes. I did some reading around and some suggested it may have to do with a font. I don't have any special fonts installed to my knowledge and can't figure out how to uninstall fonts.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
re flash
I have had weird things like this happen. I finally backed up my rom then re flashed the basic rom. If its not an issue on the base rom than it is something you downloaded or flashed. Try it out, it showed me I had an incompatible app that was messing with my rom.
Also, its worth trying out VEGAn beta 5.1.1 if you haven't yet. VERY STABLE, in my honest opinion.

Market loads but will not download

Like many around here I picked up a Woot GTab and suffered the soft brick problem where one could not get past the Viewsonic screen on both Cyanogen7 and VEGAn-TAB, I finally was able to use NVFlash to go back to stock and then flash Cyanogen 7 this evening without any issues.
Now, I have (had actually) a working Cyanogen 7 install but the market (even after performing all market fix steps) will not function. I can load up the market normally, I can search and select apps to download, but once I select them for download, the download will hang and nothing will come down.
Out of frustration I flashed the ROM again over to VEGAn-TAB and while the device works fine otherwise, I experienced the same exact problem with the market. So right now I have VEGAn-TAB installed, it works fine, I can browse everything in the app market, but nothing will download. I'm fairly new to rooting (though I did it on the Nook Color with the SDK), but I've exhausted my search-fu on these forums and I'm going to break down and ask for advice. Anybody have suggestions of what to try next?
With the market fix, in the first time sometimes it takes a few minutes. Just let it sit there while you go do something else. After the first time (which could take up to 10 minutes or so), all downloads after should be instantaneous. If you still have a problem, come back and we'll try something else.
PS - You currently do not have full market access. If you want to have full market access, you need to change in build.prop the line ro.something.device=whatever to ro.something.device=olympus. This will give you full access to everything.
Edit.
BTW, please tell us how you are applying the market fix. You need to do specific things in specific order. If you deviate from it, you will not get the right result.
Try to install cm7 or gingervegan and don't do the market fix. Do not restore any system data with Titanium if you are.
Thanks for the responses guys.
I'm at work but I do have my device with me, so I can futz a bit, but not spend a lot of time working on it. I did originally try CM7 and VEGAn-TAB without the market fix, so that's been tried (no system restore either since it's a clean system and there's nothing to restore).
I followed the instructions found here for the market fix. I don't know if this is the "proper order" or not, but it was the link I found. I have also let the system sit for three hours and it continued to sit at the "Download starting" status. This has occurred on both CM and VEGAn-TAB. Is this even the standard market problem? I can see everything in the market, it's just I can't download what I can see.
One thing of note is that I did not change the build.prop the line ro.something.device=whatever to ro.something.device=olympus. I guess I'll go look that up, but as I've never actually changed the code, that's going to take some research. I'm curious though, if this isn't the standard market problem, will this fix it?
cm7 does not require the market fix. If you can get to the market and not download then something is borked on your tab. If you cant find the market then you need to install gapps.
Wait.....did you repartition your tab to anything other than 2048 and 0? If you did then that could be your problem
Here's the order of what I tried.
I installed Clockwork Recovery .8 without any problems.
I tried to flash CM7 and couldn't get past the Viewsonic boot screen.
I tried the same with VEGAn-TAB with the same result.
I read a few threads and discovered I needed to use NVFlash to restore back to stock in order to get a GB Mod to work, which I did.
I then flashed CM7 and DID get past the boot screen and everything loaded up with no issues. At that point I had a 2048 and 0 partition.
I tried to access the Market with no problem, but I couldn't install software so I wiped and installed VEGAn-TAB. This install was also on a 2048 and 0 partition.
The VEGAn-TAB install had the identical problem that the CM7 install had, I could see everything in the market, but couldn't install, so I wiped again back to a 2048 and 0 partition again and reinstalled CM7.
On the second install of CM7 I tried to do the market fix, but without the modification to the build.prop. This didn't do anything.
I repartitioned again to 4096 and 256 (off of the suggestion on another thread I found) and did the market fix (off the instructions I found here) which did involve modifying the build.prop file. Marketplace still functions exactly as it did before.
I can find the market. I can open the market. I can search the market and find all sorts of apps (all of them by the looks of it). I can select apps for download. Once I do so the app will stick at a status of "starting download..." and it will not install, even after letting it sit for three hours (I was in a meeting, it wasn't that big of a deal). On a side note, I can load apps over Windows and then opening the .apk file manually without a problem.
I read somewhere trying another different Google ID, which is about where I am right now, either that or throwing my hands up in frustration.
Its not this hard. If you install cm7 and then gapps it should just work. It doesnt need a market fix or a build.prop change.
You will definitely have problems if you are partitioned at 4096 and 256. 2048 is the only setting that works and android doesnt use swap so 256 is a waste.
Just a stupid question? You are install gapps on your tablet and not trying to install apps through the web market?
Try logging into your Gmail account on your tab before messing with the market
Market fix not the same as you need
There are a lot of suggestions here that do not address your problem: You can open the market, search and find apps, but they will not download....
This has nothing to do with any market fix (where you cannot see or search for specific apps like "Launcher Pro" or "Dolphin HD Browser"...
What I think is happening is the market app is trying to use your Cell Phone for downloading, not your WiFi. (I know that you can connect and see the market over Wifi....) I had the same problem myself after flashing VEGAn Gingerbread + pershoot's latest. Gtab has no cell phone.....
Funny thing is the Amazon market works fine.
My problem seemed to fix itself after a day or so, (after flashing pershoots Froyo overclocking kernal) there is no setting I can find to force the market to use wifi downloading. I cannot say what I did or didn't do.
I'm planning on waiting a day or so, to see if the problem clears up by itself again. If anyone knows a better fix, please post!
Thanks
Im afraid any suggestion that we make at this point won't address any of his problems.
But he could try this

or
Make sure time and date on your tab are correct
Thanks

My date and time were OK, I was able to connect and download from another wifi service outside of work. I usually have no problem d'loading apps while on the visitor VPN, but possibly market needs to connect once and then it's fine.
Thanks for your help.
I had the same problem with seemingly every rom I was using. The apps would show up in the market but would stall out while downloading. I tried all the fixes. Tried loading Google talk/voice but still no luck.
I ended up going back to stock with MVflash and starting over.
I'm currently using this rom: http://www.udrom.com/forum/index.php?/files/file/213-gtablet-330/
and really like it. The market shows pretty much everything and I didn't have to do a market fix. The only issue I'm having is that a couple of my apps don't fill the screen completely like mobile banking but I can live with that for now.
Vegan RC1
With the latest Vegan (Gingerbread RC1) it runs flawlessly for me.
