Updating to Super User 2.3 question - Captivate General

Won't replacing your update.zip get rid of the 'clockworkMod' recovery? What should be done if you already have clockworkmod installed?

Yes, but there is a copy of the file inside clockworkmod folder, that you can copy over afterwards, and rename. Or you can have ROM manager and let it download clockwork again, by clicking flash recovery.

[Q] Cannot Get ClockWorkMod Recovery to Stick

I've flashed CWM Recovery three times, and I cannot for the life of me get it to stick. My phone constantly resorts to the stock recovery, so, I'm rooted and have SuperUser working fine, but no custom recovery. I'm on a Mac by the way.
Just delete or rename /etc/install-recovery.sh

It's located in your phone. You can access it by running adb shell command. Or use Root Explorer.

[Q] Can someone please offer me some advice. CWM isn't working

Hi all,
I know that there are a lot of guides on xda and I've been reading them, searching and googling like crazy to try to find the answer.
Yes I'm a noob and I'm still trying to Root my phone.
I have managed to S-OFF with revolutionary.
I want to flash ARHD 4.1.13 (android 2.3.5 & htc sense3.5) onto my HTC Sensation Z710e.
I've been reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
And I'm at the stage where I'm trying to install recovery v5.0.0.8 CWM onto my phone for recovery.
I have downloaded recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.img from the threads here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277975
I've heard that the file should be named 'PG58IMG.zip'
I've named the file recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.img as 'PG58IMG.zip', then I've started up HBOOT but I keep getting messages stating cannot find PG58IMG. Then I just get the standard HBOOT screen of Fastboot, Reboot, Recovery etc... No messages about 'Updating' etc which you'd expect from CWM.
How can I move forward from here?
Thank you,
T-L-H
That's where you're going wrong. If you've got the recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.img you flash it as it is using the fastboot flash command
fastboot flash bootloader recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.img

I'm sorry I don't quite get what you're saying.
Edit---
I've just come across this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17173579&postcount=86
I'll try using that.
Sounds like you dl it,but it needs to be on the root of your sdcard. Move it to the root, then check md5sum,load up and it should recognize it.

You can't just rename the recovery file PG58IMG.zip - it doesn't work like that
If you have the *.img file you have to flash it via fastboot. That or find someone that's packaged the recovery into a PG58IMG.zip file
I've managed to flash the ROM onto my phone ^^
I've used ARHD 4.1.13 (android 2.3.5 & htc sense3.5)
Just to double check, that doesn't have Beats (thats fine I don't have any Beats headphones anyway).
Will it change the CPU to 1.5Ghz? In hardware settings for the phone it still shows 1.2Ghz.
Think that one doesn't but not sure...why not go for HD 6.x?

It was my first time Rooting and flashing ROMs onto phones, the whole firmware thing confused me until I'd thought about it...
I know that what I've got on now is stable.
I'll fiddle with it in a week or so.
you should rename it to "recovery.img", and put it into the old PG58IMG.zip (cwm 5.0.0.8) and overwrite the old recovery.img.
then put the new PG58IMG.zip in your sdcard root folder and get into hboot then update it.

Yeah, I'm downloading the Download free 4EXT Recovery Updater from here: http://www.4ext.net/
It's an APK file so how do I run it in the phone as I'm guessing it's an App.

just copy the apk file to your sdcard, and then open file explorer,e.g. es file explorer. then install the apk file, and then open the "4ext recovery" in your app drawer, and choose "online install|upgrade", then choose "touch", then choose the latest version, now it is 1.0.0.3 RC3.

I've put the apk file on root of my SD card, I opened ES File Explorer, installed the App, I ran it, updated it online to RC3.
Shut down the phone, HBOOTED it and then chose recovery and then back up in EXT4. It's doing it's thing now, I take it that this is correct?

[Q] Lost root after installing 9ZGgDXDi.zip

Lost root after installing 9ZGgDXDi.zip.
This of course installed JB 4.1.1 but then when I go to recovery after entering fast boot menu I see a supine green robot with a red triangle with an exclamation point spilling out of its guts. (truly a horrible sight)
It also installed recovery-from-boot.p in System folder.
I know the solution is to rename recovery-from-boot.p file to recovery-from-boot.p.bak or renaming to something else or deleting, however since I lost root I don't see how I can rename or delete this file.
When I use root explorer I cannot mount r/w so cannot rename the file
Using ES File Explorer I rename the file but get the message that rename failed.
Connecting the phone via usb and turning on usb storage I can only access files from sd card and so cannot get to system folder in the parent directory.
Please can someone help destroy or rename the .p file.
If I'm reading it right, you lost your root and recovery after installing the OTA, right? You can still flash a custom recovery and install SU from said recovery after flashing CWM. You would then have the ability to rename the script which replaces the custom recovery with the stock. The file, if IIRC, is called recovery.sh or something along those lines.
Refer to this guide and re-root. Probably the easiest way to solve it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789216

you are reading me right.
However I cannot flash anything thanks to recovery-from-boot.p file.
Whenever I try to flash anything I get message that "installation aborted"

Tried that site, but the links to software are broken
edited to add:
oops, yes the links to software work, just didn't see the correct download for all the advertizements.
Thanks for your help but I have solved my problem by adb flash of cwr

I think its after fastboot screen - that is when I go to apply zip from sd card
However I have since solved the problem by using adb to install cwr again so I am now back to root
thanks to both of you for trying to help

Two things, you must:
1. Have modded recovery binary
and
2. Make sure you are using the correct CWM 3.0.2.8
EDIT:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mex4qna8rr3urck Modded Recovery
http://www.mediafire.com/?jvtpra5ashdmctn CWM
Make sure you change CWMx.x.x.x to update.zip and the modded recovery must be placed in /system/bin
Backup current recovery file and make sure you overwrite with this, using a file explorer that allows you to get to root access.

One thing to remember about this is that you MUST mount the internal storage as read/write. Ghost Commander (free on Google Play) lets you do this. You have to enable root explorer in its menus, and then go to where your stock recovery is and mount the volume as read/write. Then, paste the modified recovery in the directory and overwrite the stock one. Now, you should be able to get into CWM.
First things first: did you successfully root your phone?

Had to factory a SK4g, and I don't know how to redo recovery...

Many links are bad to recoveries/ROMs/ and even the one-click links are dead. I had a back up on my home rig, so I got it rooted, but cannot seem to find/get/fix recovery.
I have 2 and tried to copy the recovery from /system/bin/recovery from the good one to the sd card, put it in the SK4g with factory recovery in the same place... to no avail.
I would even be happy to try out the MIUi recovery or whatever it is called...
Please advise. This SHOULD be in general, but nobody there seems to have old-school files/knowledge but devs.

If you mean the modded recovery files for the Orange CWM, they can be located here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2200896 <-- check the bottom of the first post for the recovery and update zips. Inside of the recovery zip is the "recovery" binary that you push into /system/bin.

I downloaded the recovery.ZIP, extracted the "recovery" and copied it to the sd of the phone, ran root browser. It said that root browser by Jrummy App Inc was granted Superuser when pasting the file "recovery" to the /system/bin/ dir.
Still factory recovery.
I seem to recall something where I had to run an update.zip to get non-stock recovery to work from a factory-stock-rom, or something.
PLEASE advise.
I guessed at the mounts from recollection, and it seems to be working.
Alright, I had to use update.zip and install the update.zip which sent me to the orange recovery. Installing custom ROM now. Thank you!!!
