It would be nice to see this roll out with Froyo for all carriers. Too bad Froyo wont come sooner but we will get it soon enough.
Definately sounds like it will be implemented in the 2.2 update. Hopefully the earlier part of September opposed to the later.
Don't worry, if by OTA through AT&T, I am sure we won't see anything until Halloween...
They may surprise me, but I kind of hope the update gets done through some sort of direct download. Rolled up with Froyo I'll bet AT&T will be sure to man-handle it though...

They had a similar tweet from @samsungservice earlier today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it comes sooner rather than later.

Translation: "Please don't take your phones back! We'll fix it, honest!"
The problems must have been more major than I would have expected from their end. Even with plodding development and carrier meandering, there should have been months of advance notice of the GPS issues due to the foreign Galaxy S release, and I'd imagine AT&T would be all-too satisfied to roll it out quickly given the complaints about it.

I'd be willing to hold off on 2.2 if they would fix the gps, the app lag, and the craptastic battery life.
I'm willing to bet that at&t are the ones holding this up, adding their "software."

Have to agree, AT&T probably needs to add it's crapware before releasing this.

Didn't they already announce that it wouldn't be available till September for the international GalaxayS?
Are you kidding me?
Captivate has been out 3 weeks... and you think it should have Froyo already?
I can wait. Let Samsung get it right first.
Froyo will be out in sept for I9000. We then have to wait for At&t to update and release it. If a froyo kernel is leaked for the captivate we can use the I9000 froyo rom.

That is what I was thinking. A lot of people think it takes a couple of minutes to crank out the new update to froyo for the Galaxy S phones. It takes time and a lot of coding and debugging to ensure maximum compatibility and stability with the new Froyo update. I prefer to wait and make sure the kinks get worked out.
At least we know they are working on updating to froyo since we have seen various I9000 froyo leaks, so now the best thing to do is wait and make due with what we have.
I have to agree with the concesus here, this phone is already blazing fast and its going to take time to port froyo to operator specific phones. Motorola just needs to deal with verizon whereas Samsung is dealing with 8 carriers ALL with different hardware... Not something that is easy.
Best thing you can do turn off live wallpaper and install LauncherPro and call it a day. Increase battery life and speed... Done and Done!

Make that 110 carriers. However, the core functionality of all these phones are almost the same. I'd say (just a guesstimate) around 95% of the hardware are similar. The software side maybe more different as pre-loaded software have to be considered.
OMG, Why don't we just go find the old threads for the blackjack and blackjack II WiMo upgrades. Do a little find and replace, paste the results here and stop wasting our time having this conversation again.
It will be realeased when it is released. Samsung is notorious for slow updates so we have to deal with it. After all we are all here on XDA which means almost every last one of use will flash a Froyo ROM long before the official update is released.
I was at the mall yesterday went to ATTto ask if they new when update is coming out. He said GPS will be end of Aug and Froyo is coming Mid-Sept.

And if you call ATT I bet they will give you some type of date. I will then gaurantee you that date will come and go with no update. This is par for the course when waiting for samsung OS updates on the ATT network. I think it was the blackjack I was waiting on. There were several dates, all confirmed by an ATT Rep. It took well over 6 months from the first date before we saw the update. So don't hold your breath.
Just got off the phone with samsung. Tech support said gps fix for sure by end of sept. And froyo as soon as a few days to no more than few months. Also the update will come straight from them no att involved. Sept. 21
Fro-noes!!
Froyo update. As soon as a few days to no later then a few months. Thats like me saying, Yeah........Ill get back to you Mr. President. Within a few days, but no later then 4 years when your run is over with. Garenteed!
Every time someone calls Samsung or walks into an AT&T store and asks about fixes and updates, we get a slightly different answer. A dozen calls will yield a dozen different answers. The reality is that none of the people you can get to through the normal channels will know diddly squat about the actual release schedules. If we're lucky, the better than average rep/support tech will hear something about it a few days before it happens at best.
To get the real schedule, we need inside information. We need a Deep Throat! Someone on the test team at AT&T and someone on the dev/QA team at Samsung.

What if the dev/QA team at Samsung/ATT doesn't even have a schedule yet? This may sounds crazy but it is possible.
Remember that Galaxy S UK announced their Froyo update schedule 3 months ago. US division, on the other hand, still hasn't announced anything. Is it reasonable to assume the wait for Froyo update will be at least another 3 months?

I have been checking the Samsung site nearly daily for a week or so because their tech support also told me it would be available on their support site. However the last few days my bookmarked page is 404 and drilling down through the web site comes up dry also on downloadable Captivates stuff.

In all likelihood, it is part of their deal with AT&T to supply certain updates within certain time frames -- standard practice. It will also need to be factored into Sammy's development schedule as it sounds like their devs are going to be quite busy with different Galaxy S updates. There's probably only a couple dozen people who actually know first-hand what those dates are.
Few months...sounds like next year to me. Hopefully not, I really want Froyo on it.
whats the huge advantage of having 2.2? really whats so big about it

OMG I'm currently downloading something from the update menu in the phone.
Update: OMG It just finished the download and is 50% through the update.
Update: OMG it went to 100% and said "update is failed." Is this because I'm rooted?
Update: Unrooted to try again and it don't let me re-update. The "check once/24hrs" deal is bull**** yO` Screw you ATT
From Engadget:
Sammy just hit us up with a brief statement that should make Captivate owners jump clean out of their seats and do a spit take if they're enjoying a cup of joe:
"An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks.
The update for the Captivate will also improve additional device functions, such as media scanning time, add the full version of Quickoffice and address Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support."
Awesome, right? Of course, the proof is in the pudding -- we'll need to wait and see how "fixed" the GPS really is after this gets installed, but it's a start. Notably, this doesn't seem to include Froyo, so we don't know whether these guys are going to be going the British or Spanish routes in getting that deployed.

According to the comments this "fix" is just the JH7 Rom that apparently doesn't fix anything.
If that is true then I think we can forget about a real gps fix for the galaxy S.

GPS + other improvements for Samsung ATT Captivate are HERE! Today - next few weeks OTA notification will be sent to customers! #GalaxyS
Saw this on Engaget today Samsung has finally announced the official Froyo rollout.
It will start in the UK in early Nov and all carriers updated by the end of Nov was the official press release from Sammy.
Cross your fingers..... Maybe the release of the code will speed up some Captivate dev.
We can only hope
September, then October, now November...Let me guess...December is next?
Looking back over it, the press release reads like it's only going to cover the UK. WTF?
It also says that their pulling the rollouts they did in the Nordic countries because things were jacked up. Curious. Samsung sucks.

Because it is only a press release from Samsung UK division. They can't speak for other regions.
Samsung US said nothing and that probably means Nov. 2012 for us.
Beat me to the punch. You can read more here on Endgadget.
And the You Mobile Link as to why it was pulled in Scandanavian land too.
Pretty much I'm ok with a later November release if Samsung actually fixes the lag/bugs reported in that article.

If you read the article a little more closely - Endgadget states that it will roll in the beginning of November for the UK - then start rolling out at the end of November to the rest of the world (a.k.a. us).
So - my assumption was correct we should see it around Christmas!
Lol I might as well load a custom rom now or wait til someone creates a custom rom based off 2.2 for the I9000. that might take awhile for the epic though, probably quicker than a official ota release from samsung.
Going on 2months with my epic now, wishing HTC or Moto would have given me a sprint andriod device with a keyboard. Typing this would have been annoying without one.

If you read the official press release, there is no mention of anything outside of UK. As usual, Engadget injected its own opinion based on mis-reading of the press release.
The press release only mentioned all carriers, inside UK, will get the release by the end of Nov.

Yes it will. But it doesn't mean we will see it here in US by the end of Nov. 2010.
Regarding Froyo on US carriers: Samsung USA is saying:
@SamsungMobileUS Re: Froyo release in November statement came from SamsungUK. Froyo for US SGS will be avail this year http://ow.ly/2Xce8
So if it's not November, that only leaves December...
As it stands my personal opinion is that US carriers would start rolling it out at the beginning of the new year.

That's how I feel. I had an iphone for 2.5 years and absolutely loved it. It worked flawlessly. I had it jailbroken so I could customize the crap out of it with winterboard and run all the unapproved apps in cydia. But, me being me, I was a little bored and just wanted something differentso I sprang for a Captivate. Its a decent enough phone, but I'll never get another samjunk phone again, they are just crap with software updates. I'm not even sure I'll ever get another android phone. It's not nearly as open as everyone wants to believe. Here it's been several months and there's no custom roms out for it yet. I wouldnt especially call cognition too custom, its a stock samsung rom that's had some tweaks done to it. I'm stuck with this phone for 21 more months until my contract is up, I hate to have to spend $500-600 for another phone off contract. I'm really hoping samsung gets their act together because 21 months is a long ways to go. And it appears that handset makers are doing their best to really lock the phones down. The motos now have e-fuse, the new G2 is even worse. You can only temporarily root it, when you reboot it, it loads the OS back from a hidden partition so its like it was new. The only truly open phone is the N1.
I probably am in the minority here..but oh well..won't be the first time.
I would rather have something work than not. Since my Captivate works great..I can patiently wait till FroYo is released here especially if they are going to make sure it is done right this time. December isn't that far off,and I am sure it will be December possibly January before it is rolled out in the US for the Captivate..
I think many need to chill out and take the wait & see attitude. Let the other carriers get it first, that way most of the bugs will be worked out or at least known so we can see what is already wrong if anything before we install it.
Hell..the trend is never going to change for the manufactures to defeat what the developers cook up.If they can lock the phones down and force us to all have Iphones..then that is what they are going to do. I blame Steve Jobs at Apple for this and his strangle hold on AT&T..and I honestly think it is going to get worse...So..I see the other US carriers getting it before AT&T and releasing it.
I've learned from the school of Hard Knocks never to rush out and get the latest & greatest new thing anymore when it first hits the shelves..since almost every manufacturer is using it's customer based as BETA testers..
I know with every release elsewhere..it just gives the developers time and more code to use to build really good stable roms..not just patches and have them work greater than they already do.The Cappy has only been out for 3-4 months..give them all time..to get it right..

I keep going both ways on this. Yes Engadget read more into it. The press release is vague though:
The Android 2.2 software is being fully tested with UK operators and the upgrade will be available in the UK from early November. We expect all operator versions of the software to be fully tested and downloadable by the end of November.

The way i read it is, that it is being tested in the UK Now, and will be available early November - all UK operators should be done by the end of November. It seems very UK centric.
I think we need to wait for separate carrier announcements in the US - the phones are different enough that each carrier will have their own schedule.
EDIT Samsung Twitter site confirmed this statement is UK only. They reference July quote that all US Samsung Galaxy S phones will get Froyo "This year".

So your choices are go back to iPhone, spend the dough for an AT&T N1, or keep your Samsung and ***** for another 21 mos.?
Who knows though? Maybe Samsung will release the 2.2 OTA and get it right?
Whether they release the upgrade in a month, two months, or three months - in the big scheme of things what's the difference? We've lived our lives for this long without Froyo, so big deal if it's delayed beyond whatever expectations have been created.
Furthermore, people who believe that Froyo will be bug-free and will be a remedy for all ills afflicting the Captivate are kidding themselves. Perfection (or even that which is close to perfection) is ever-elusive.
I don't know what people ***** so bad about this. There is a leaked froyo rom, PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE. Also why do you want them to rush some buggy crap? Let them do there thing. You have a Froyo rom, so just wait till they iron out all the kinks and let them give us a solid Froyo rom.
I have been dealing with this in the best possible way being patient and having hope that this update would fix all problems. but was i wrong. i feel like LG just released this update just because so many were nagging about it. i feel like LG is worse in their updates compared to samsung! and i thought they couldnt get worse. all i have to say to LG is HIRE OUR DEVS or GET YOUS TOGETHER!!!
NEVER BUYING ANOTHER LG Product again! (and i have had probems with their TVs... i should have known making the same mistake twice!)
feel free to vent!
LG did not release this update. There was no announcement or comment of any kind, someone just found it this morning. Official updates are OTA from the carrier.

We know that this version is the one that is being tested by internal users. My guess is that they decided that they would get more and better testing if they quietly made that test build available to the enthusiast public. It's clearly not finished yet -- unchanged kernel, vanilla camera, GPS driver still screwed up -- so it couldn't be offered OTA to the mass consumer, but it will be picked up very quickly by most enthusiasts and tested much more thoroughly than it would be their internal cadre of guinea pigs. A quiet release like this also has the advantage of taking the wind out of the sails of those who were alleging that LG had no intention of ever updating the software. Seems like a win-win situation all around.
from the peopel i know that got OTA as an employee... they havent noticed a difference. but its all a waiting game now.
Still got a SOD and reboots which still leads me to think it is a hardware issue not software. Hopefully tmoble releases the official GB update soon and maybe it will be better.

Did LG not release it or did T-Mobile just not sign off on it? I think that LG rushed this out in response to all of the complaints. Either that or it was an accident. Who the hell knows. It's definitely still unfinished though. Better, but not perfect.
What I meant by "GPS driver still screwed up" is that it's clear that the data the driver is putting out is not what programs expect; GPS Test, for example, says that the S/N ratio of the satellites is supposed to be less than 100, and the values it's reporting are often over 200. It and GPS Status often show satellite positions that are below the horizon. It claims to be using AGPS data, but there's no way it can be doing so if it takes 1-2 minutes or more to get a fix; with the AGPS data it should be getting a "hot fix," i.e., 15 seconds or less, like you do when you use the GPS within a few minutes after its last fix. It obviously works "well enough" for Google Maps, etc., to use it, but it's clearly not "right."
